Botswana
General Information Botswana is a country in Southern Africa. The region has been inhabited by Khoisan for about 19.000 years, with Bantu influence starting to appear around 2.000 years ago. For most of the past Millennium, various states and dynasties, especially of the Tswana people, have been ruling over different areas of the region. From 1885 to the independence of Botswana in 1966, the region formed the British Bechuanaland protectorate. Majority of the inhabitants are Tswana, with Kalanga, another Bantu group, being the largest minority. Smaller minorities include San and White Afrikaners. Most Batswana are Christians. The official language is English, the national language is Tswana.

Economy The economy of Botswana is currently one of the world's fastest growing economies, averaging about 5% per annum over the past decade. Growth in private sector employment averaged about 10% per annum during the first 30 years of the country's independence. After a period of stagnation at the turn of the 21st century, Botswana's economy registered strong levels of growth, with GDP growth exceeding 6-7% targets. Botswana has been praised by the African Development Bank for sustaining one of the world's longest economic booms. Economic growth since the late 1960s has been on par with some of Asia's largest economies. The government has consistently maintained budget surpluses and has extensive foreign-exchange reserves.

Okavango Delta The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a swampy inland delta formed where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough at an altitude of 930–1,000 m in the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. All the water reaching the delta is ultimately evaporated and transpired and does not flow into any sea or ocean. Each year, about 11 cubic kilometres of water spreads over the 6,000–15,000 km2  area. Some flood waters drain into Lake Ngami. The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that had mostly dried up by the early Holocene.

4 September 2022 || Family Day
This afternoon we went to buy groceries, shopped colored pencils, highlighter and clay, and got new strings for the ukulele. We also enjoyed eating strawberry-banana icecream inside the car. Then we headed to Geely to test drive our crush-car, Okavango 🥰
Hihihi so many wants..... we lift up to God the desires of hearts, but most importantly we pray that only His will be done in our lives. We praise God also for His provision!

Water Lions: Speculative Evolution
i recently came across this article from 2013 about an isolated species of Lions in the Okavango Delta that have grown pretty big thanks to their environment, which needs them to almost always tread through water to get from one place to another, and mostly feed on water buffalos. A result of these environmental factors causes them to bulk up a lot, and that got me thinking about developing a sort of mini speculative evolution project. What if we were to place some similar lions in a bigger environment of the similar nature with water buffalos?
The first adaptation that comes to mind is a change in fur. a more oily coat would allow the cats to shed water more easily. Apart from that, the fur itself would become a little curlier.
Now, assuming that this environment stays stagnant, one would assume that lions would become better swimmers, putting on even more muscle, which would also help against water buffalos, similar to Bengal Tigers in the Sundarbans.
It is safe to assume that Water Buffalos won’t be the only things that the cats feast on, as the delta is also abundant in fish, which the lions could tap into as an alternative food source. They could develop adaptations that help them see more clearly in the delta water, bigger lungs that would let them hold their breath longer, and stronger hearts that pump the oxygen rich blood through out their body with greater efficiency. They would also become more stockier, allowing them to be better  swimmers.
so i suppose what i am essentially imagining here are lions with darker coats (that help them blend into the water) who are great swimmers, can hold tier breath longer, are sturdier and stockier, (sort of like half dwarf lions). What I also think could happen is that the males lose their manes, allowing them to become better swimmers.
Of Course, the males will still be significantly larger, and would get larger still on the steady diet of water buffalos and fish. This wouldn’t necessarily mean they would become giants like ligers or something, but they could definitely approach tiger sizes, if not being off by a few kilos on average.

Kwando Splash Camp is situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta, within the Private Kwara Reserve. This new camp will offer a very relaxed, friendly and authentic atmosphere. The area has long been known as “Splash” due to the huge water crossings that had to be negotiated to access the camp area. The Kwara Reserve shares a 30km water boundary with the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Favoured by labyrinths of permanent water channels and secret islands this area offers the perfect delta experience, and is considered to be amongst the best in Botswana for game viewing and activities.

Begünstigt durch Labyrinthe von permanenten Wasserkanälen und geheimen Inseln bietet dieses Gebiet das perfekte Delta-Erlebnis und gilt als eines der besten in Botswana für Wildbeobachtungen und Aktivitäten.

The female lions of the Okavango Delta in Botswana epitomize all of the agility, stealth, and intuitive cooperation that define a lioness-led hunt. Male lions get much of the limelight, but the lionesses are the true heart of the pride-and they perform the bulk of the demanding work required to sustain it. The crimson "war paint" on this lioness is a visceral reminder of how closely her existence is tied to the cycle of life and death.
