Re Ukraine/Unified Team in 1992, two points.

1. The best option I can come up with who was age eligible in 1992 and competing is Oksana Knizhnik. She would have been a pretty big hit on points compared to the Unified Team scores. And I can’t even come up with a 6th athlete. I don’t see a scenario where Ukraine wins a gold in 1992, especially since I suspect Gutsu wouldn’t have been massively overscored the same way without the Soviet politics and/or Unified team score-building behind her. I think bronze behind Romania and the US was a best case scenario for a hypothetical 1992 Ukraine.

2. Much like Betty Okino and Wendy Bruce, the proof that Grudneva deserved to be in Barcelona was the way she performed there. I may be a biased Grudneva stan, but I think her performance was outstanding and there is a good argument that she was underscored due to her early start orders. She had really strong compulsories and her optional bars was a real highlight of the lineup. I think if there really was a pro-Russia conspiracy in 1992, Grudneva would have been given better lineup spots.

And that's a completely fair reading. I do feel for Natalia Kalinina in particular because I do not think she's in the Kim Kelly bracket here. She had an excellent compulsory and optionals in Indianapolis.
