The Boy and His Cedar Wand (Ominis Gaunt Oneshot)
Tumblr media
[My first fanfiction in a very long time! It's about how Ominis got his wand. Hope you enjoy it! SFW, 1200 words]
My writing masterlist
Gerbold Ollivander, the most renowned of all Wandmaker of his time, perfectly remembered each wand he ever sold, as well as each client who purchased them. Most were young witches and wizards, buying their first wands, ready for their first year of study in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To these young ones Ollivander served them kindly, gauging their personality, letting a brand-new wand to choose a new young master, ready for learning and for adventures.  Some of his clients were adults, usually coming after their first wands were damaged beyond repair, or lost. To them, Ollivander begrudgingly served them, slightly crossed, knowing that more than often these adults were not ones who treated his creations with care and respect.
Yet today, the client entering his shop was the most unusual one in his recent memory. It was a boy. A very young boy indeed, much younger than his usual young clients. Probably about six years old, probably younger. The boy’s eyes were cloudy and milky, and he tilted slightly his head nervously, while the tall and dark looking witch that must be his mother hold his wrist tightly, practically dragging him toward the shop. Ollivander raised his eyebrow calmly, expecting the witch to be purchasing a wand for herself. He could not be more surprised, yet he was not surprised at the same time, to see what happened next.
“He needs a wand of his own,” the witch said curtly, with an undisguised hint of disgust in her voice. She violently shoved the boy forward, making him stumble and nearly fell to the floor had Ollivander not caught him deftly in time. The boy was shaking slightly, as if wanting to cry but too afraid to do so in front of his mother. “Useless boy, unable to follow even the simplest task he’s told to do, unable to even cast a basic spell we expected our young ones to in our family! And now his aunt is telling us that Ominis needs his own wand, and that things will be better afterward. It better be!” The witch spat angrily, her voice filled with disdain and disgust in equal measure. It made Ollivander wonder what the task was. Whatever it was, it did not sound like something pleasant.
Slowly, he took a long look at the boy who was shaking in front of him, noticing traces of dried tears and terrors in those cloudy eyes, wondering what had happened. He could sense something was terrorizing the boy deeply. Ollivander sighed quietly. Ominis tilted his ears toward Ollivander, afraid to make any noise, his unseeing eyes blinked rapidly. Quietly the boy stood immobile, unlike any other young client of Ollivander, Ominis did not look around excitedly, nor moving from his spot, as if he was afraid to. Either from stumbling or from his mother, Ollivander could not guess.
One more quick look at Ominis and Ollivander knew what he had to do.
Most young witches and young wizards coming to his store would be paired with a brand new wand, sometime ones completed barely a day before. But this boy, Ollivander reasoned, needed something more.
Quietly, under the scathing gaze of the witch and the nervous silence of the boy, he went to the back of the shop, and pulled a long, thin old wandbox. Unlike any other brand-new boxes containing a brand new wand in his shop, this box was quite dented at the corners. Its silver lines were faded and there were scratches on it.
Ollivander slowly kneeled beside Ominis so that they were on the same height. Even if the boy could not see, he wanted his voice to come from the same height as Ominis.
“Here, try this,” Ollivander told Ominis as he gently placed the old wand on the boy’s hands.
Nervously, Ominis’ fingers ran through the wand, exploring all marks and scratches on it. Finally, he held its handle with both hands. And for the first time in his short life, he felt a feeling of warmth and benevolence, running through his fingers to the end of his hairs, his toes, enveloping him in a comforting feeling. For the first time ever, he felt safe. It is as if he suddenly found a friend who understood and cared for him. The feeling was new. From the tip of the wand, sparks flew.
Ollivander nodded quietly, quite proud of his strong intuition. He knew that this wand had come back to this shop waiting for this particular child. He knew what this pairing meant. This boy in front of him needed more than just a wand. Ominis needed this wand in particular.
“That’s not a new wand isn’t it?” The witch behind Ominis sneered. “Looked like an old second hand one.”
“You’re right, Madam,” Ollivander replied politely. “Cedar, ten inches, phoenix feathers. This wand was made by my grandfather and was sold to a witch over a century ago. The witch willed us this wand back after she passed away. I believe your son would benefit with such an experienced wand. Please consider it a gift. I will not sell a wand that had once been sold before,” he added quickly as the witch seemed displeased at the prospect of buying an old wand. It seemed paramount to Ollivander now that Ominis needed all the help he could get, poor boy. He could not even imagine what the boy had to live through with such parents. And quietly, he knew of the reputation of the family now standing in front of him.
“A… a gift…?” For the first time ever, the boy spoke. Ominis hold the wand with an unbelieving expression. Clearly, he had not received that many gifts in his life.
“You should know that a second hand wand always come enriched with the experience of the witches and wizards who wielded them before you. This particular wand belonged to a witch who created a particular spell, one that I am quite sure you will find useful. Just like you, she was blind. But it is not something that stopped her. She was best known as the creator of the Echolocus Spell.”
“E… Echolocus?” Ominis whispered, confused.
“It is also known as the Echolocation Spell. Echo means sound, or a reverberation of a sound. It is a spell that allows you to navigate your surroundings, detecting the terrain and objects around you by emanating magical wave. All around you. When the wave hits an object or any obstacle, it will reflect toward you and your wand will allow you to sense it. That way, you can detect everything around you. As this wand was one that was involved in the creation of this spell and knew it well, I expect it would help guide you in the days to come.”
Ominis said nothing, listening to Ollivander teaching him the spell, and how to use it even without uttering the incantation. He could hear a pulsion coming through his finger toward his wand, and for the first time ever in his life the world seemed less frightening. Whether it was from the warmth of the wand in is hands, or from the warmth of Ollivander’s voice, he could not tell. He felt save.
For the first time ever in a very long time, Ominis smiled.

Thinking about who Ollivander saw die that he can see and work with thestral hair as a wand core and the implications of it.
Is it a deliberate thing, do wandmakers apprentices work a shift at St. Mungo’s or something to ensure exposure to death? Is there a rite of passage revolving around gaining the ability to use the material?
Is there a way to ensure a correct amount of inventory is kept/tracked for those who can’t see thestrals?
Is a wandcrafters first thestral hair wand a major milestone, showing that they as a craftsman have been irrevocably changed? Like how art historians break artists’ work into groups chronologically based on events they’ve lived through?
Is it rare to find a wand maker who even uses the material?
Is it indicative that the craftsman lived through war that they use thestral cores?
So many thoughts about it.

Madness (D.M.) Part One
I have never understood why life can change so fast.
One second, I'm top of my class at Ilvermony School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I don't have many friends, but I cherish the ones I do. My friends sit next to me at a long, wooden table. There are doodles and initials etched into this wood, it feels like a step through time. The professor drawls on and on, and in the back of this dimly lit classroom, I struggle not to fall asleep.
The door swings open, I hear the footsteps of someone new. I ignore it, as my arms are folded on the table and my head is rested upon them. Im too tired to care who it is.
"Miss Montgomery?" A voice pierces through the atmosphere of quiet chatter and boredom. I sit up, and my face goes hot as everyone's looking at me. I finally realize it's the Headmistress's aid standing next to the professor. "Come with me, please." He speaks. My professor waves me along, and I have no choice but to follow.
"Have a seat" The Headmistress tells me, as her aid leaves me behind without one word, slamming the door shut. An older woman stands beside her. She's intimidating, for an old lady. Her silver hair is pulled up, and her emerald robes flourish the ground. She has this look in her eyes, and for once, I can't tell what it is. Reluctantly, I take a seat before them.
"It's nice to meet you, Ms. Montgomery, I'm Minerva-" She begins to speak, but I'm quick to finish her sentence.
"McGonagall. My mother told me about you. Call me Leah, please." I find it hard to meet her eyes as a pit opens up in my stomach, and a feeling of dread hangs over me. She nods and moves closer to me. Gently, she places a frail hand on my shoulder. "I thought it would be appropriate for me to deliver this news myself, given the circumstances."
My breath stops, and I feel as if my heart has frozen in place.
"Your father passed early this morning, dear. I'm so sorry."
My eyes focus on a single speck of dirt on the cobbled floor. I suddenly realize this castle is always so cold. I understand it's old and ancient, but why is it always so cold?
"I assume you've met your aunt, Winifred Ollivander?" Minerva asks. I manage a nod, my eyes still studying this single speck of dirt. Doesn't anyone sweep in here? Surely, it's not that hard to charm a broomstick and get the job done.
"You'll finish your term here, at Ilvermony, but you are to live with your aunt in London when the term finishes. You'll be attending a new school. I understand this is a lot to take in, so if you have any questions..."
"No, I would just like to go now" My voice trembles as I speak. I thought I might not be able to at all.
"Very well then...your aunt asked me to pass along this letter for you. I'm so sorry we have to meet under these circumstances, my dear." She clears her throat as I stand to leave. I reach for the letter she's brought for me. As I do, I catch a glimpse of her face, and I can finally decipher the look in her eyes. It's pity.
First my brilliant, exceedingly smart mother, and now my no-maj father. What a pity.
-
London is weird.
Everyone here speaks differently. Everything is different. Even the magical world is different than what I'm used to.
My aunt drags me along crowded streets, filled with young witches and wizards. I can't help but shoot strange glances at them when I hear them speak. Someone steps on my toes, and I yelp, jumping closer to my aunt. "Be careful, love! Diagon Alley is probably a lot more crowded than what you're used to!" She's got that right.
With her grip tightened around my wrist, she yanks me into a store, Flourish and Blotts. It's less crowded here than the streets. I finally feel like I can breathe. "I'll take care of your books, dear. Leave it up to aunt Winnie!" She hoots and walks away with my parchment list of books, asking a shopkeeper where to find each one. I look around, taking it all in.
In the far back, I notice a boy my age. His strikingly blonde hair parts down the middle. I can only assume his family has money by the way his suit is tailored perfectly to his shape. He's not big my any means, but he's got a presence about him. I take him in as he flips through the pages of a purple-covered book.
"Secrets of the Dark Arts?" I ask him about the title as I approach. He jumps, turning to look at me. He quickly puts it down, and brushes his hands off on his dark black suit. "Didn't your mother ever teach you manners? Who do you think you are, sneaking up on me like that?"
I hold out my hand, "Leah Montgomery, nice to meet you." He brushes past me, I stumble a bit and bump my shoulder on the shelf beside me. He certainly does leave an impression, doesn't he? The book he held laid open on a display table in front of me. I close it, and a small smile plays at my lips.
I trace my finger over the author's name, Vivian Ollivander, my mother. Those her knew her best described her as bloody brilliant. Maybe even a little bit mad. I described her as my other half, just as she did me.
She dedicated so much of her life to research and writing. Although, I've never understood her fascination with the Dark Arts. She wasn't a cruel woman, she was quite the opposite. I guess it's just another thing I'll never come to understand about her.
Aunt Winifred pops up behind me, arms full of books. She lets out a heavy sigh and I turn to face her. "Your mother and that brilliant head of hers." She tsks. "I never understood why she wasted so much time on these silly books."
I smiled, "She always said that no knowledge is worth hiding...and she knew everything. She was a walking encyclopedia of all things magical."
"That she was, my love... Why don't we stop at Ollivander's and say hi to your grandfather while we're out this way?" Aunt Winifred suggests, presumably to get my mind off of mom and her books.
"That would be nice." I nodded, setting the book down, and following after my aunt.

I went to Harry Potter world today! I went into Ollivander's and the clerk there helped me to find a wand--but really the wand chose me 😌 My wand is made of hornbeam wood with a dragon heartstring core, 13 in, and reasonably pliant. I love it!!! I got my robes today as well, and now I'm all ready for classes.

'I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr Potter. Every single wand. It just so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another feather — just one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand when its brother — why, its brother gave you that scar.'

Adventure
For the @harrypocter Winter Sun drabble fest!
Prompt: Angelina Johnson
Each stop Angelina and her mother made added to her bubbling excitement – buying her cauldron, getting fitted for her first set of Hogwarts robes, piling up books full of spells that she, Angelina, would soon be able to do. She burst over the threshold of each shop with a wide grin and giddy heart.
But as she stood in front of the last stop, the most important one, an uncharacteristic note of nervousness nestled its way in next to her excitement. Her mother’s firm yet warm grip on her shoulder gave her the spark of courage that she needed, and the pair entered Ollivander’s.
The shop contrasted the joyful hustle bustle of the streets outside with its dark walls and almost eerie silence. Dust swirled steadily in the slivers of sunlight that streamed in through the front windows.
“Go on, sweetheart.” Mum nudged her gently.
Angelina walked up to the empty desk with as much confidence as she could muster, stood on her tiptoes, and rang the bell. The sound echoed through the shop, bouncing off the endless shelves of wands. She wasn’t sure if it was simply in her head, but they almost felt…alive.
Seemingly out of nowhere, a tall, wispy man appeared, looking at her with an intensity that was both reassuring and intimidating at the same time.
“Ah, Miss Johnson. Are you ready to find your wand?”
Angelina thought back to when Anthony had come home from Diagon Alley with his wand. It had seemed an eternity to wait the last six years to join her brother, to say goodbye to him on the platform year after year and watch him come back with more and more mastery of his magic. How Angelina had yearned for this moment, for the beginning of an adventure all her own.
“Yes,” she said with a smile. “I’m ready.”

after some time (and one fanfic reread) i've finally decided my pandora and xenophilius headcanons:
pandora lovegood (ollivander):
father: garrik ollivander (the one who worked at the wand shop). the ollivanders were said to be crazy
the ollivanders were distant relatives to the ravenclaws (i'm sorry, i read a fanfic and i loved this hc).
mother: sybill trelawney's mother's sister. the trelawneys were known for being gifted in divination
she was sybill's cousin
xenophilius lovegood (malfoy):
father: abraxas malfoy. he lived w his family and believed in blood purity until he got to hogwarts. there, he was placed in ravenclaw and met pandora, who taught him how everyone deserved to use their magic freely. after hogwarts, he run off with pandora and when they married, they created the name "lovegood" (which is why it's hard to trace the lovegood name back in the years)
he was lucius' twin brother, making luna and draco cousins (i have hc for them too in the dh)
mother: idk who is lucius malfoy's mother, but that same one
