Onicha Ado N’idu; Naming rites and traditions of the Igbo of Nigeria
What is in our names? The Igbo are one of the three major tribes of Nigeria and comprise the largest group of people living in southern region of the country.Igbo culture is a magical amalgamation of steadfast customs, ancient practices, Nka (artistry), religious beliefs, birth, marriage and death rituals, language, music and dance forms, as well attire and cuisine. The culture of the Igbo modifies our thoughts, speech, actions and artefacts to the extent that we are easily distinguished from other ethnic groups.
In Igbo traditional society, a naming ceremony, Igu Afa, occurs on the 8th day after a child’s birth. Paternal grandparents officiate the ceremony and it begins with ancestral recognition and divination, followed by the name giving. Wine libations are then poured in deference to our ancestors and also to notify them of the child’s name. This is followed by the breaking of kola nuts and prayers and the ceremony, which traditionally lasts an entire day, ends with a family procession.
In Igbo land, there is great significance in a name – a name is more than just an appellation or a stamp of identity. Our names bear a message, a meaning, a story, an observation, a history, a life experience or a prayer. They embody a collective of my people’s rich heritage and provide a window into our value systems and life philosophies. We believe that God, man and destiny are intertwined. Chi is our personal God who resides within the individual and presides over our destiny, Eke is the principle of creation and destiny apportionment and Uwa is the world as we know it. This sacred trinity is woven into our names and moulds us into who we are.
Onicha Ado N’idu offers a viewing facet into our culture, our naming rites and how these appellations shape who we are. How a culture survives depends on its people’s capacity to learn and transmit it to succeeding generations. Through Nka, I hope to provide viewers with an understanding of who we are as a people and seek to learn more about my tribe and my country as a whole

By • Olalekan Fagbade I started stealing babies after my own children too were stolen, Woman confesses A23-year-old woman, Nzube Robert Chukwu, has revealed how she started stealing babies and selling them after her own two male children were stolen. The single mother was last week convicted by an Ebonyi State Magistrate’s Court for involvement in the child theft business in Abakaliki. She revealed that she got a share of N40,000.00 from each of the proceeds of any baby she stole. Nzube explained that her duty was to steal the babies while a bus driver identified as Ofunwa sold them. She revealed that the last N40,000 shares she got on the illicit sale of a baby was spent on the purchase of clothes and body cream. The convict fingered her suitor in the disappearance of her two children, a situation that paved the way for her to join the illegal child stealing business. She said: “I joined a child stealing business after losing my two children in 2021. As a single mother, I was looking forward to getting married. So, in 2021, a man saw me and started wooing me for marriage, not knowing that his interest was to steal my babies. “When my children disappeared, he stopped visiting and packed out of his known residence. Shortly after, a man popularly called Ofunwa, living at Chukwu Street, Abakaliki, met me when I was a sales girl at Margaret Umahi International Market Abakaliki and introduced me to the business of child stealing. “When I get the babies, I hand them over to Ofunwa for him to sell and after the transaction; he gives me N40,000 from the proceeds. I don’t know where he sold them and how much he made. The last N40,000 he gave me, I used it to buy clothes and body cream,” she narrated. Nzube, a native of Umuimam in Oshiri Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, explained that luck ran out on her when the last baby she stole from her friend started crying uncontrollably, a situation that drew the attention of neighbours before she was arrested. She said: “I was caught as the baby was crying uncontrollably at the Convent Road axis of Abakaliki on my way to my house. The girl I stole her baby from is my friend, Ifeoma, who lives at Onichaegu Street, Mgboagbaja towards Hill Top. “She is a single mother of four. She leaves her babies in my custody whenever she goes for a night job. I warned her to take better care of her children but she ignored my advice. The day I stole the baby, she was not around while the children were sleeping; their door was wide open. “I planned to take the baby to my house and take her to Ofunwa, a bus driver who plies Abakaliki-Enugu-Onicha, the next day. But the cry of the baby was too much as it attracted people’s attention and they started beating and questioning me; from there, I was taken to a police officer, CSP Onuebonyi.” After the completion of the investigation, the police arraigned Nzube at a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki. The charge sheet read: “That you Nzube Robert Chukwu, aged 23 and others now at large on the 29th day of August 2023 at Mgbo-Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in the jurisdiction of this honourable court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit child stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516A (a) of the criminal code cap 33 volume 1 laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009. “You unlawfully made away with a four-month-old baby girl without the consent of her parents and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 33 of Ebonyi State Child Rights Act and Related Offences law 2010.” Sequel to her guilty plea and recovery of the stolen baby, Chief Magistrate Lynda Ogodo, on October 16, 2023, sentenced Nzube to 36 calendar months imprisonment. Ogodo warned the convict to desist from evil acts and explained that the offence of child stealing attracts 10 years imprisonment but it was reduced to three years because Nzube saved the court’s time by pleading guilty upon arraignment.

*Demands immediate, unconditional release of Okorie By John Danjuma The Labour Party (LP) has expressed concerns over the alleged abduction of former member of the House of Representatives and LP candidate for 2023 Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone, Hon Linus Abaa Okorie, by men of Ebubeagu Security Network. A statement by the National chairman of the Party Julius Abure demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Okorie Okorie was kidnapped on Sunday night while he was on his way to his house in Abakaliki by gunmen known to be men of Ebubeagu Security outfit allegedly sent by Onicha Local Government Chairman and master minded by the APC Government in Ebonyi State. Read also>>>Kwankwaso gives reasons for rejecting Arewa Joint Committee invitation "It is no longer news that some political actors in some South Eastern states particularly, Ebonyi and Enugu have vowed that Labour Party and its candidates will not be allowed to campaign freely in the zone. This is evident with incessant attacks on members and supporters of the Labour Party and that of our other candidates. "This night attack is viewed by the party as a furtherance of the determination of these political hirelings to frustrate the progressive incursion of the party across the nation and particularly in the South East. "The frequent attack and kidnapping of innocent Nigerians, particularly the political class could have a major consequences in the coming general election. This is quite unfortunate and it is not good for democracy. We see it as a threat to our democracy and it should not be allowed to progress or institutionalised. "I want to recall what happened to our party in Anambra State last year when our governorship candidate, Hon. Obiography Agbasimalo was kidnapped at the heart of campaign and as I speak, nothing has been heard about him. Sadly, this is happening again. "We therefore call on Inspector General of Police and other agencies responsible for the protection of life and property to rise to the occasion and ensure that Hon Linus Okorie is released. "As alleged, the Ebubeagu Vigilante security in Ebonyi State is under the strict overlordship of the state authority and is known to carry out orders of the state government, deploying brute force on the people and residents of the state. "We therefore demand that His Excellency, Governor Dave Umahi must rein in on this Vigilante or any other of the government agents to ensure that intimidation of perceived political opponents ceases, and that political rights of every Nigerian as enshrined in the constitution is respected. "Finally, we urge the government to give directive for Hon Linus Okorie's unconditional release from these criminal elements. Another statement by Labourty in Ebonyi State issued by the Party's spokes person Dr. Yunusa Tako inducated that okorie has been severely tortured to a near-death situation, made naked and pictures of him taken by his Ebubeagu abductors. It stated that information available confirms that their major objective is to torture him to death and dump his body at the Ebonyi river. "His phones are currently with the team commander of his Ebubeagu abductors. "A professional tracking done on Okorie lines reviewed "Ogoja Road, near Police Headquarters," as his current location. The second line showed "Ebun-Nwana, Edda. "We are believing that his abductors may have kept his half-dead body at old Government house where the previous actions of the indicted militia group, Ebubeagu usually take place. "It's also alleged that from tomorrow, and days ahead, all Okorie followers and supporters will be hunted down and made to face similar situation. "We call on the security agencies to swing into action and unravel this situation, get Okorie out alive from his Ebubeagu abductors and bring the perpetrators of this evil act to face the full wrath of the law".
