Summary - Even though it takes place during the American civil war, The Beguiled isn’t a war movie. Colin Farrell is Corporal John McBurney, who is found wounded in the Virginia woods by schoolgirl Amy (Oona Laurence) and brought to the mansion of Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman) - a Seminary for Young Ladies. The presence of the injured soldier causes excitement among the ladies, and distraction from their French lessons, prayer, and music practice.

His leg injury prevents him from walking, and he is bedridden and locked inside his room. He is completely at the mercy of the ladies, who can turn him in as a deserter at any time, which would mean imprisonment or possibly death.

My review - I found the dark scenes really difficult to see what was going on. Sofia Coppola described it as a gothic feel to what would have been a romantic visual setting. These virtuous ladies are far from that. They act like a coven of witches. Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor Hell a fury like a woman scorned. The corporal is a narcissist, using his charm and taking advantage of the ladies for his own needs. The whole movie is unsettling and tense, like a fox in a chicken coop, ready to pounce.

Pete’s Dragon (2016)

This re-imagining of the 1977 Disney classic follows the adventures of an orphaned feral boy named Pete who befriends a dragon he calls Elliot.

The cast includes: Oakes Fegley as Pete, Oona Laurence as Pete’s new friend Natalie, Bryce Dallas Howard as forest ranger Grace Meacham, Wes Bentley as lumber mill owner Jack Magary, Karl Urban as lumberjack/hunter Gavin Magary, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Sheriff Gene Dentler and Robert Redford as Grace’s father Mr. Meacham.

Each actor gives a sincere performance. Robert Redford still maintains the charisma and idealism of a legendary performer. Oakes Fegley is especially irresistible as a young boy whose magical connection with a harmless mythological creature is basically the heart of the film.

Elliot, who was created by traditional hand-drawn animation in the original film, is created in CGI for this particular film to appear real and seamless. The main difference in Elliot’s design is he’s coated in fur, which looks both soft and warm to the touch as opposed to having scales. Unlike other dragons, Elliot is very emotional (to the point where he turns invisible when scared), but has the loyalty, playfulness and curiosity of a puppy. Despite Elliot’s massive size, his adorable charms make him the kind of animal you’d want to have as a pet. Not to mention the flawless interaction between a CG Elliot with live-action characters is literally quite touching.

The bond Pete and Elliot share is originated from the way they found themselves alone through different circumstances, protecting and keeping each other company. When Pete introduces Elliot to his human friends, who only heard stories of the creature told by Meacham, they all form a unique connection. However, Gavin makes ruthless attempts to capture Elliot to prove his existence to the whole town, prompting Pete to save his companion from possible harm.

The story takes place in a small fictional town. The surrounding wilderness is where Pete and Elliot reside. Pete is reintroduced to society after he is found by Grace, Jack and Natalie. The green fur on Elliot is a reflection of the delicate beauty of nature. It provides a good example to respect all living things in their habitat.

Another difference between both versions of the story is the music. The first version is an old-fashioned Disney musical without involvement from Walt Disney himself (who’s been gone since 1966) whereas this new version has a soundtrack of some contemporary songs from modern artists. The track list includes: “The Dragon Song” by Will Oldham (aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy), “Nobody Knows” by The Lumineers, “Something on Your Mind” by St. Vincent and “Something Wild” performed by Lindsey Sterling (featuring Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness).

Now, I honestly don’t intend to besmirch the original work of any Disney movie, but this film is simple and lighthearted fun compared to the slow, mundane 1977 original. On that note, the Walt Disney Studio struggled in some way following Walt Disney’s death. However, the company regained its success from 1989’s The Little Mermaid to the trend of live-action remakes.

Lastly, the movie shows two lost souls who help each other every step of the way, proving that even the most special friendships are everlasting. In closing, I recommend this sweet, adventurous film to all who enjoy tales of dragons.
