YouTube videos about open-world games are like "I CAN'T BELIEVE the devs thought of this" about literally the first thing any playtester who enjoys causing problems on purpose would think to try.

I know this wouldn`t be to everyone taste, but i personally hope mh wilds use the open world format to expand upon the tracking and explorations elements of the series. Have the large monsters be more rare, requiring players to go on long journeys to find them, kind of like those parts of shadow of the collosus where you quietly travel the land in search of the next boss. To go with that, id like if the large monsters had very detailed interactions with small monsters and their environnements, both during and outside of the fight. Similarly, elder dragons should be affecting the weather and mess up the ecosystems, wherever they go.

Sonictober2023 Day 16! Theme: Guidance.
A guiding force may seem like a boon, but not every hand that feeds you is a healthy one. Sometimes they omit key details. Sometimes they impair your progress. And sometimes they even try to-- well, you know the rest...

Audio log I found outside of a locked facility: *huff* *huff* I- I barely got out. Those... Things... They got everyone else. I can hear banging on the door *metal thumping and muffled screams* but I can't open it for them. Lost. All lost. *sobbing*
Me, wandering around looking for side quests:

list of games everyone should play before they die imo
- bioshock
not only is this one of the most influential games. maybe ever, it’s also just one of the greatest examples of how to make a linear experience /feel/ self-directed, and the fact that that is THE PLOT OF THE GAME makes it all the better
- titanfall 2
i think this one goes without saying. is it as well written as some others on this list? probably not. but the story still goes pretty hard, and basically any failings are made up for by it having THE smoothest and movement and combat systems even half a decade later)
- subnautica
if you’ve played it, you get it. simply put, it is the best survival (survival horror?) game and may never be surpassed. it understands how to guide a player through an open world, how to tell multiple stories at once, and how to keep experiences fresh better than most games even outside it’s genre
- breath of the wild
the greatest open world experience ever. period. that’s it.
- mario odyssey
nintendo at its absolute peak. narrowly beat out galaxy just because of that little bit of polish it has from being newer, but i mean play both. odyssey is a beautiful experience that is simultaneously approachable yet non-coddling (like many mario titles) and just constantly finds ways to one up itself and just be straight up /fun/.
- ultrakill
where botw is the best of the best for open worlds and odyssey is top of the line 3D platforming, ultrakill may just be the best boomer shooter on the market. it’s combat is simple, yet synergizes with itself in such a way that the more you play, it feels like you unlock new skills without any kind of leveling to speak of. many people have said it’s a game that answers every question the player could have with “yes,” and yeah i agree.
EDIT HOW COULD I FORGET DISCO??? MY SWEET BABY???
- Disco elysium
what can i say that hasn’t been said already? unparalleled storytelling. the dark souls of communism. a game that gets you to reckon with yourself and—just maybe—touch grass. maybe not.

Fuck this game. Fuck it. First I get hit with all the memories of these genuinely great people I absolutely hated at the beginning them came to love as I'm riding with my girl Liliana as the sun sets, silent streams pooling from my eyes.
Temporary relief seeing John's alive, then miss Grimshaw is fucking shot, more crying.
We escape, LILIANA IS FUCKING SHOT. This time it's full blown wretched sobbing as I thank my horse I've journeyed with for over 300 hours and experienced all my ups and downs with.
I'm STILL bawling as I climb the mountain with John, then Arthur just has to say we ain't both gonna make it and passes on his hat. Still crying.
I then get launched into a fight scene and blindly shoot motherfuckers through my tears.
Micah, this son of a bitch, jumps me and now I'm grappling with him while snot is still running down my nose.
Beat the shit out of him, just learned how to breathe again, Dutch shows up and all I can think is "papa doesn't love me anymore".
AND THEN I FIND A COZY SPOT. I lean against the rocks and watch as the damned sun rises.
That was the most exhaustive hour of my fucking life. I'm never recovering from this.

People complain about escort missions being the worst things in games but the actual worst thing is "Find all X items scattered around the world. We're not going to tell you where they are and you won't notice them unless you're standing right on top of them." It's just a lazy way to increase playtime by making people have to scrape every corner of the game world.
The way to fix it (Aside from throwing it out altogether) is say there are X items to find, but spawn way more of them. If you have to find 100 mcguffins, create 500 spots where they are guaranteed to spawn. Then once the player finds enough, despawn the rest. Now we have a bunch of Schrodinger's mcguffins which are simultaneously everywhere and nowhere and their true locations were the ones you found them at first.
You can also make the mechanic worse by despawning all but one randomly chosen remaining mcguffin after finding X-1 of them.

Storage Areas Getting all of these set up in ways that made me happy took FOREVER, so I wanted to share the finished results here.  I may eventually add more windows, but I don’t really think they’re necessary.  :)  In order of appearance, you have Charlie’s rooms for: crafting supplies, gemstones, flowers, cooking supplies, gardening/gifting supplies. ~ Disney Dreamlight Valley © 2022; developed by Gameloft.
