no I don't think some people get it.
Barbara Gordon should not ever be Batgirl ever again. She is an adult woman, who has grown fr past the role. Who lost her ability to walk. Who lost a good chunk of her mobility, and had adjust to disability. If you've ever lost a bodily function you've had your entire life it drains on you both mentally, and physically. Having to fight with yourself to adjust to a new reality to learn to adapt to the world your now living in. It is a fucking battle, and the world is not made for you in the end.
She had to get used to slighting lopsided sidewalks are, two floor buildings without elevators, trying to wheel over carpet, not being able to do things she's always done, etc. And in the end she ended up becoming more powerful than ever before as Oracle. So the goddamn fucking audacity to take her back to Batgirl.

Okay here's the thing though. Actual play is not like other narrative forms, because the amount of chance involved in the game play means that the ending, in most scenarios, is not already written, and even when it is, as in EXU: Calamity, how you get there is not yet set in stone.
But notably, what is set in stone, the past, only goes back so far. In theory, character backstory is pre-written, but anyone who has played TTRPGs with an emphasis on story and character will recognize that backstory is a lot more fluid than we might imagine, and certainly more fluid than the history of a real person. As you really begin to play the character, you find the ways the backstory doesn't quite mesh, what needs to be cut or fleshed out, and you can make those edits over time so long as they haven't yet been brought out explicitly in game.
But the farther along you get, the more you have to make explicit, and the less leeway you have (at least without significant, usually clunky, retconning) to change that past to suit the future that you're developing.
At the same time, though, the backstory that does get set into stone over the course of the game is still in many ways virtual, in that it is often, if not exclusively, filtered through the point of view of the character's memory. Even in the flashback sequences of this chapter of Candela Obscura, the emphasis tends to be on how the characters remember it, and what they choose to remember—Sean doesn't know, will never truly know, if the children he killed were monsters or not; Nathaniel doesn't focus in his memory on the fact that he tried to save his brother, he only remembers having failed.
In this sense, there is generally an element of unreliability to backstory. Because it exists in memory (even for the players, who usually have not played out every one of those moments as if they were living it, only having remembered it), it is subject to the fallibility that memory always involves.
This kind of restricted timescale, the entire world contained concretely only within the context of game play, is a mechanical reality and limitation of TTRPGs in general, and much like the laws of physics, it's not really malleable. One could play out certain pieces of backstory, but cannot ever live the entirety of a character's experience, and even then, the larger context of that experience will always exist outside of the world until it is made concrete in the course of the game.
This is the brilliance of Marion's breaking of time. The manipulation takes advantage of the fact that this memory is only a memory, because even as played out between him and Jean in "Flesh and Blood," it is still filtered through how the Marion of the game remembers it, and not a concrete experience.
That ability of the Medium, to manipulate reality and change oneself in the process, as though it had always been this way, is a mechanical acknowledgement of the already slippery flow of time in game play. It is a beautiful mechanical form of retcon that doesn't feel like a cheat or a copout, and it's simultaneously a very clever way of managing the tension between these limitations of form and the common fantasy archetype of diviners and seers.
Using it to then literally rewrite the past, because the details of the past are still fluid until they are explicitly written, is nothing short of poetic.

Ram V's Detective Comics run is somehow out here acting like it's still the Rucka-Brubaker era of Bat comics and not 2023 and I want to know whose soul he sold to the devil to get DC to let him do that

No Dick Grayson AU
Alfred convinces Tatsu Yamashiro(Katana) and Dinah Lance(Black Canary) to join Batman's crusade when it starts getting difficult for him to handle crime on his own. Katana brings Barbara Gordon into the fold as Oracle because Barbara is determined to help the vigilantes.
A few years later, Bruce joins the Justice League(Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and Green Lantern). Dinah moves to Star City, and Katana disappears. Barbara starts to join Batman on patrols.
About a year later, Batman brings Jason Todd home. Jason tries to join Batman as a vigilante, but Bruce, Alfred, and Barbara convince him to wait until he's an adult. Bruce agrees to train him until then.
Jason starts helping Barbara with coms, Alfred with making sure they have the medbay fully stocked, and Bruce and Lucius with Wayne Enterprise Charities. Jason, as the top student, graduates a year early(age 16/17 since his b-day's in march) and goes on a world tour for extra training. He gets sucked into training with the League of Assassins, but leaves rather quickly via Talia tossing him to the All-Caste since Bruce knows where he is. He returns to Gotham as the vigilante Flamebat as a nod to his All-Blades and the dark red and black costume he created. As the All-Blades don't harm any non-magical being, he normally uses them when he wants to be dramatic or particularly threatening.
Barbara does get shot by Joker before Jason goes on tour and loses the ability to walk.
Steph also appears (at 15) on the vigilante scene briefly, but is talked out of it by Barbara and disappears for a while. When she gets back she decides to go out as Spoiler. When the others are unable to convince her to wait until she's at least 17 to start being a vigilante, Cass (as she's about 1 year older) is declared to be her patrol partner. (this happens just before Jason leaves)
Cass shows up a bit after Steph does. She's found by Barbara and is convinced to wait until she's at least 17 to start vigilantism. Bruce adopts her pretty quickly and gives her the tools to figure out who she is without the violence of being an assassin or a vigilante.
About a year after Jason returns, Damian (age 10) appears in the Bat's lives. He continuously sneaks out of the manor to prove that he's worthy and ready to become a vigilante and follow in his father's footsteps.
When Bruce disappears, Jason takes on the responsibilities of being Batman and CEO of Wayne Enterprise. Cass and Alfred take on the role of being Damian's primary caretakers. Tim figures out that Bruce is still alive after getting "lost" in Wayne Manor during a gala, and leaves an anonymous tip about it for the Bats to find. (Tim doesn't know that they're the Bats, just that somehow Bruce ended up in the past.)
After Bruce comes back, things mostly go back to how they were before. Except, they catch wind of a group of child vigilantes. Beast Boy (age 13), Blue Beetle (14), Impulse (16), and Raven (13). When interrogated, the adult heroes find out that: Beast Boy had joined a group called the Doom Patrol and been with them since he was 11 but left because of conflicting morals, then run into Raven and Impulse; Blue Beetle had been doing superhero stuff for a few months before he ran into the other three; Raven had been picked up by Beast Boy while running from a cult that wanted to use her to summon a demon; and Impulse is the one who pulled the group together to help prevent a future event from happening. Not knowing exactly what to do with the group of child heroes, they put Kon (aka Superboy; 17) and Spoiler (18) in charge of the group that's now called Young Justice.
Around half a year later, Damian(11 almost 12) joins the group along with Jon (Superboy; 12).
They also find out somewhere along the way that Billy Batson was 10 years old when he started superhero-ing.

Does anyone have any magical sounding songs (or just songs that you think would suit the characters/world)?
I’m on a writing streak (just started two of the routes for chapter one!!!) and need to update my playlist for some more ~inspiration~.

Universe.
A monument to life
Tasting the atmosphere with renewed vigor
You encapsulate the entire idea of everything
It's imperfections and love and horror
Why are you so vast?
You are dark and empty and many things, surely
They long to be with you again
To be part of you again
But to think about it
I have to face that we are truly
One in the same
Atoms are only a million pieces of this puzzle
But I suppose
Then that would be a million that we share
In comparison to the trillions, quadrillions, hextillions
It's not a lot
But it's a lot to me
It provides some solice to know that
Even if you are everything
And I am nothing
We used to be many things together
Not everything, not everything
But out of the trillion, quadrillion, hextillion things
That are different about us
I'm glad that
At least
I got to share a million things
With you

i feel like Barbara Gordon does not have handle bars on her wheelchair. She has a drawer full of wheelchair gloves, and pushrim covers. Half the time she removes the arm rests from her wheelchair as they can bruise her interarms and get in the way. She keeps a box of bandaids in the bag handing off the back of her chair, incase her fingers get caught in the wheels.

Very happy that Meg actually got to act like a kid in Trials of Apollo. She dresses like a rainbow threw up on her, loves unicorns, cartwheels and says completely random things. It's such a small thing, but in the previous series Rick had a habit of adultifying characters her age. Remember Annabeth in TLT, Hazel and Sadie Kane are all around Meg's age (12-13) yet are made to act much older (Sadie literally got with a 16/5000 year old and became a mother figure to a bunch of even younger kids). You can say it's due to their past trauma, but Meg also goes through horrible situations and deals with a lot of trauma from her abusive past, yet is still allowed to act childish because she is a child. I just love that.

saw the first volume of Cursed Princess Club in the store last Sunday as I was walking by the manga section, and the name was so unusual that I looked it up online when I got home, and found out it was on webtoons to read for free, and just finished it, and holy shit
literally one of the best stories I've ever read
#I don't even know where to begin it's just insanely well-written but also so deeply emotional and wholesome and wonderful#also there's a lady with a were-spider curse tied to her menstrual cycle which gets discussed casually and like#I've never seen menstruation discussed by fictional characters in such a natural and no big deal way it was fucking awesome#but literally everything about every character was so very well-written and presented in such a good way#like I dunno curses as analogies for disabilities and how they don't lessen a person's worth#and how people are still people deserving of love and how difficult self-love and self-acceptance can be#but also how important it is but also how it still sucks to live w/ certain things#and how you can be both angry about something and accepting of it at the same time#but also about how superficial and socially/culturally constructed ideals of beauty and worthiness are and how they're totally fake#and potentially harmful and also how it's possible to work around and against and restructure those ideals#but also it's about princesses (and a couple princes) kicking ass and being cool and also just being human#also I gotta hand it to the author for having a lady who totally enjoys sleeping around and isn't shamed for it whatsoever#there's also a character who's basically aroace and despite two men falling in love with her like#as soon as they find out she's not interested in relationships they back off and respect that and still treat her as a friend#and I dunno that's just neat#like it's satirical fantasy that deconstructs so many different fairytale tropes but it's also so genuine and sincere#that it somehow circles back to embody the heart of a fairytale in all the best ways possible#anyhow it's absolutely worth a read#oracle of lore

i know nobody asked for this but i am sharing this incredibly self-indulgent thing i wrote in the middle of the night that uses all of my pronouns
Slowly, slowly, slowly, they raised their head up. His body followed with, and he leaned back onto his legs folded underneath. Xyr eyes stared into the empty dark of the room xe was in. He breathed in. She breathed out. She found comfort in the dark, he knew that he did not have to hide in the dark. Xe smiled, gradually bringing their arms up, then stretched them to the side. He sighed and closed her eyes. They shifted and swung their legs over the side of their bed, then stood, already knowing their surroundings like the back of her hand. Blinking, staring into nothing again, xe tilted xyr head back to look at the ceiling. He let out a silent giggle, absorbing the strange feeling. He had repeated this kind of thing over and over in her room, often to music, but now she did it silently. Xyr music was the fan in the other room, her footsteps against the carpet underneath, the neighbor’s wind chimes sounding outside xyr window. They danced to nothing except an imaginary rhythm created by his body. The impulses he drove to externalize, moving as if xe were possessed by a demon. They reveled in the feeling of freedom. Eventually, he laid down upon her bed again, letting xemself relax, a smile still on their face. He wished he could dance forever in the dark, but there was only so much time to allot for this. Xe resigned to sleep. They would always return to dance.
i feel anxious and embarassed still but.......... idk, i really did feel like sharing bc it gave me so much serotonin to write it ehehe
