Tutti noi abbiamo le nostre piccole crociate personali da combattere. La mia è l'infinita battaglia in difesa di RPG Maker, accusato da molti di essere un motore pessimo usato solo da sviluppatori pigri.

I giochi realizzati con RPG Maker tendono ad avere tutti lo stesso aspetto: questo significa che sono solo gli sviluppatori senza talento ad usarlo?

Ho deciso di dimostrare alle persone che si sbagliano e, per farlo, ho usato la Scienza. Questo è il motivo per cui sono andata alla ricerca su Steam del tag RPG Maker e ho raccolto dei dati su tutti i 559 giochi usciti fino ad oggi con quel tag.

Guardate qui i risultati della mia assurda ricerca.

Le versioni del motore

Nel corso degli anni sono state pubblicate molte versioni di RPG Maker e anche quelle più vecchie sono ancora in uso.

Per capire qual è stata la versione esatta utilizzata per realizzare ciascun gioco avrei dovuto fissare con attenzione tantissimi alberi, quindi non posso assicurare che le mie stime siano corrette al 100%. Ci sono stati anche un paio di giochi che non sono stata in grado di identificare, perché sembravano troppo diversi dal tipo di gioco medio sviluppato con RPG Maker.

Detto questo, il tag di Steam di RPG Maker contiene più o meno:

13 giochi realizzati con RPG Maker 2003

67 giochi realizzati con RPG Maker XP

213 giochi realizzati con RPG Maker VX/VX Ace

145 giochi realizzati con RPG Maker MV

23 giochi sviluppati con altri motori

Il risultato non sorprende. RPG Maker VX è in circolazione da un po' e possiede il maggior numero di risorse personalizzabili e plug-in disponibili liberamente per gli sviluppatori. I progetti non possono essere trasferiti alle versioni più recenti, perciò gli sviluppatori di solito scelgono un motore e lo utilizzano per anni.

Dati provenienti dalle recensioni

Le recensioni su Steam non sono veramente indicative della qualità di un gioco, ma rappresentano comunque un buono strumento per valutare se un titolo è stato ben accolto dal pubblico.

Questi sono i punteggi di tutti i 559 giochi che ho analizzato:

190 giochi non raggiungono il numero minimo di 10 recensioni e quindi non hanno ottenuto un punteggio. I giochi “positivi” sono quelli con punteggio positivo, ma con meno di 50 recensioni.

In media, un gioco sviluppato con RPG Maker riceve 227 recensioni. La maggior parte dei giochi senza punteggio sono stati pubblicati dopo il lancio di Steam Direct.

I giochi realizzati con RPG Maker hanno un valore medio del 76% di recensioni positive, cosa che li fa posizionare saldamente nella categoria “perlopiù positive”.

Ecco: i giochi sviluppati con RPG Maker non sono formalmente così pessimi. La Scienza lo ha dimostrato. Ma perché hanno una così cattiva reputazione?

Ho qualche idea che potrebbe aiutarci a capirlo.

I giochi sviluppati con RPG Maker sono sempre stati qui

Per anni, RPG Maker non aveva un publisher occidentale. Le persone hanno piratato il motore, lo hanno tradotto e utilizzato per creare piccoli giochi RPG per poi postarli, giocarci e commentarli in piccole comunità molto affiatate.

Quando RPG Maker VX è apparso su Steam, Steam Direct stava venendo alla luce. Per la prima volta, gli utenti di RPG Maker hanno avuto la possibilità di pubblicare direttamente i propri lavori su Steam.

Questo è il motivo per cui la piattaforma è stata invasa da JRPG dall'aspetto semplice. Non si tratta chiaramente di lavori scadenti prodotti da sviluppatori malintenzionati: la maggior parte dei giochi con punteggi bassi sono evidentemente i primi lavori di sviluppatori inesperti. Dopo tutto, perché pubblicare il tuo primo gioco su un forum quando hai l'opportunità di metterlo su Steam come un vero sviluppatore?

I giochi creati con RPG Maker sono sempre esistiti: le persone li pubblicavano semplicemente altrove.

Sono molto facili da identificare

Gli RPG richiedono una quantità enorme di risorse: luoghi, personaggi, mostri e menu. La maggior parte degli sviluppatori che utilizzano RPG Maker sfrutta le risorse predefinite fornite dal motore, migliorandole qua e là con una personalizzazione occasionale di personaggi e illustrazioni.

Questa è la ragione per cui i giochi RPG tendono a sembrare tutti molto simili tra loro. Non è una questione di pigrizia: la maggior parte dei piccoli sviluppatori semplicemente non ha il tempo, le capacità e le risorse per riuscire a fare tutto da zero.

RPG Maker offre anche molti sistemi predefiniti. Ad esempio, il sistema di salvataggio, il sistema di combattimento e i menu. Strumenti che tornano utili, ma che sono molto difficili da modificare (e in alcune versioni la cosa risulta addirittura impossibile). Gli sviluppatori possono passare ore a personalizzare i propri lavori ma, alla fine, i piccoli dettagli, come il menu delle opzioni, faranno intuire ai giocatori che si tratta di un gioco sviluppato con RPG Maker.

... il tag ti sta mentendo

I tag di Steam sono aggiunti dai giocatori, che non sono sempre ben informati sui motori di gioco.

Ventitrè giochi contrassegnati con il tag RPG Maker non sono stati realizzati con questo motore. Nove di questi sono stati sviluppati con l'editor WOLF RPG, un'alternativa gratuita a RPG Maker utilizzata in Giappone. Gli altri sono stati prodotti con Game Maker o motori personalizzati.

Questi giochi, pur non essendo stati sviluppati con RPG Maker, hanno comunque tutte le caratteristiche di quei tipi di giochi: sono i classici JRPG in pixel-art che ricordano l'era SNES, pieni di combattimenti a turni e di grandi ritratti in stile anime.

D'altra parte, i giochi che vanno oltre le aspettative di ciò che un gioco sviluppato con RPG Maker dovrebbe essere, sfuggono al tag. Il coloratissimo collage game “Where They Cremate The Roadkill”, ad esempio, non è stato taggato sebbene sia stato realizzato con RPG Maker XP.

Questa è la ragione per cui i tag relativi ai motori non dovrebbero semplicemente esistere.

Altre considerazioni sparse:

RPG Maker 2003 non morirà

RPG Maker 2003 è uno dei motori più vecchi che vengono ancora utilizzati per sviluppare. Al giorno d'oggi, RPG Maker 2003 è come una retro-console: i suoi grossi limiti sono divertenti da aggirare e aiutano allo stesso tempo gli sviluppatori in solitaria a non abbandonare i propri progetti.

Non ha nessun senso che sia ancora in circolazione, eppure sono contenta che lo sia. […]

Mancano i giochi migliori.

Il numero di giochi sviluppati con RPG Maker presenti su Steam è impressionante, eppure mancano tutti quelli più iconici. Non c'è traccia di Space Funeral, né di Ao Oni o di OFF e Gingiva.

Sono troppo punk per essere su Steam. Ma a causa della loro assenza, il pubblico mainstream ha iniziato ad associare RPG Maker a semplici JRPG e non ha mai avuto modo di provare cosa si può fare quando si spinge il motore al limite. Quando su Steam è approdato il classico cult Yume Nikki perché il publisher ne ha pubblicato il sequel, sembrava che qualche orribile segreto fosse stato rivelato al mondo.

La facilità d'uso di RPG Maker attrae spesso giovani sviluppatori inesperti, ma lo rende anche un buon motore per gli sviluppatori che preferiscono concentrarsi sugli aspetti artistici, la narrazione e l'atmosfera. È un gran bello strumento per i giochi sperimentali, che ci ha regalato molti giochi divenuti classici, che hanno finito per influenzare i titoli più famosi. Dubito che avremmo avuto Undertalesenza OFF, ad esempio. Sicuramente non avremmo avuto LISA, nato prima come il fan-game Yume Nikki.

Su Steam, il tag RPG Maker ha raggiunto il punto in cui non rappresenta più un motore, ma piuttosto un genere con aspettative ben definite. Si è creata una falsa associazione tra il software, il tipo di giochi che produce e la loro qualità, ignorando una ricca cultura fatta di rotture creative, esperimenti artistici e fan-game.

Se volete provare giochi realizzati con RPG Maker decisamente più creativi, i siti Rpgmaker.net e Vgpersonsono i luoghi perfetti per iniziare. E se dopo continuerete a pensare che tutti i giochi sviluppati con RPG Maker sono pessimi, dovrete forse accettare che non fanno semplicemente per voi.

My Love Story!! (Ore Monogatari!!) is an anime television series produced by Madhouse, based on the manga series by Kazune Kawahara. The series follows the muscular but kind-hearted Takeo Gōda, who forms a romance with the timid Rinko Yamato. Afterwards, Mariya gives Takeo a towel as a thank-you gift, causing Rinko to become concerned that she might be a rival for Takeo's affections. Shortly after protecting another pregnant woman from falling down some stairs, Yuriko feels a pain in her stomach and has to be hospitalized, leaving Takeo understandably worried. As Rinko and Makoto come in to give Takeo their support, Yuriko goes into labor, with Takeo helping to carry Yuriko when she offers her wheelchair to another pregnant woman. With help from the safe birth charm Rinko gave her, Yuriko gives birth to a large but healthy baby girl, Maki, who at 4200 grams (9 pounds 3 ounces) is only slightly smaller than Takeo was. Takeo assumes that the cookies he received earlier was in fact the chocolate in question and he regrets not having savoured it, only for Rinko to show up with her proper chocolate that she specially prepared just for him. Recognising her as the girl who gives him an anonymous Valentines each year, Makoto agrees to exchange details with Yukika in order to get to know her better before making a decision. The next day, however, Yukika becomes convinced that Makoto only accompanied her out of kindness and not because of love, feeling that she should just give up and break off her ties with everyone. Not wanting things to end just like that, Takeo and Rinko catch up to her, helping her understand her feelings. Afterwards, Makoto gives Yukika a gift in return for the chocolates she gave him every year, properly turning her down while still leaving her with happy memories.23'My Spring Break' Transcription: 'Uchi no Haruyasumi' (Japanese: うちの春休み)Tōru TakahashiSeiko TakagiSeptember 9, 2015During spring break, Rinko takes a part-time job at a cake shop, catching the attention of the shop's assistant, Kouki Ichinose. While getting used to the job, Rinko helps Kouki to sell some of his own cake ideas, which he starts to misinterpret as her having feelings for him. This leads to some jealousy from Takeo, as Kouki starts speaking with Rinko on a first name basis, something Takeo has not yet done himself. Upon finding out that Takeo is Rinko's boyfriend, Kouki tries to convince him to break up with her, believing himself to be the better man for her. Takeo becomes concerned that Kouki may have a point, especially after seeing him giving a lift to Rinko in his car. Kouki asks Rinko to help him in a patissiére contest.24'My Heart' Transcription: 'Ore no Kokoro' (Japanese: 俺のココロ)Hideki Hosokawa Kotono Watanabe Morio AsakaNatsuko TakahashiSeptember 23, 2015[2]Rinko offers to take Takeo out on her day off, only to have to cancel it at Kouki's request. As Takeo starts questioning if it is alright to be with Rinko, her friends assure him that Rinko chose him for who he is, strengthening his resolve to not lose to Kouki. Resolving to win the patissiére contest and confess his feeling towards Rinko, Kouki gets inspiration from Rinko's gushing about Takeo to create a unique sweet for the contest. On the day of the contest, Kouki ends up leaving his cake-making tools at the store, so Rinko asks Takeo to get them to him before the contest starts. Thanks to the support of both Rinko and Takeo, Kouki manages to win the gold medal and makes his confession to Rinko, who chooses to stay with Takeo and assures Kouki that he won through his own effort. Afterwards, Takeo starts calling Rinko by her first name, bringing their relationship a small step further.

Yokai Watch: First Person Pronouns List

I’ve been meaning to do a list like this for myself and thought others might be interested, too.

Basically in the Japanese language, there are multiple first person pronouns, so more than one word for “I/Me”. Which one is appropriate to use generally depends on the context and society’s standards and the like.

And well, here I want to list which first person pronouns the characters of Yokai Watch usually use to refer to themselves, and maybe explain a little about them.

Note: At first I’ll just have a few characters listed here, but I will try to slowly add more and more to this list. This franchise has countless characters after all. Feel free to message me if you’re interested in a certain character being added.

Main Characters:

Kēta (Nate): “Ore”, written in katakana as “オレ”; Informal and masculine.

Note: While from what I understand this one would normally be considered too informal when used in anything but a casual context, in fiction it’s become a pretty standard pronoun for male characters.

Fumika (Katie): “Watashi”, written in hiragana as “わたし“; Formal and gender-neutral.

Note: While “Watashi” is considered acceptable to use for people of any gender, it’s used more by women than men, being pretty much the “standard” pronoun for women and girls, in fiction. For men, it would often be considered too formal to use in casual situations.

Inaho: “Watashi”, written in katakana as “ワタシ”; Formal and gender-neutral.

Note: See the note on Katie’s part.

Whisper: “Watakushi”, written in kanji as “私“; Very formal and gender-neutral.

Note: Unless I’m completely mishearing it, in the anime, he often seems to use the more feminine variant “Atakushi” instead? If that is true, I don’t know if it’s ad-libbed by his voice actor, or if it’s a deliberate change in the anime, and I’ve never seen him use it in the games.

Jibanyan: “Orecchi”, written in katakana and hiragana as “オレっち“; Informal and masculine.

Note: From what I understand, “Orecchi” is a variation of “Ore”, mostly used in Shizuoka?

USApyon: “Me”, written in katakana as “ミー“

Note: This is taken directly from the english word “me”, and in fiction it’s used by Westeners, most commonly Americans. Though of course this probably has very little basis in reality. I suppose it’s possible some people use it in irl cause they like how it sounds?

Supporting Characters  (Yokai) :

Komasan: “Ora”, written in katakana as “オラ“; Informal and masculine.

Note: “Ora” is a regional variant of “Ore”, and in fiction has become associated with “hick” characters from “the countryside”. Also note that while it is masculine, you will usually see female characters use it as well, their lack of gender roles in speech being another thing associated with “hick” characters.

Komajiro: “Ora”, written in katakana as “オラ“; Informal and masculine.

Koma Kācchan (Koma Mom): “Ora”, written in katakana as “オラ“; Informal and masculine.

Bosses (introduced in YKW1):

Mitsumata Nozuchi (Slimamander): “Ware”, written in katakana as “ワレ”; archaic and gender-neutral.

Note: “Ware” as a first person pronoun is archaic in the sense that it is no longer really used in spoken Japanese at all, only like old expressions and words from older times, from what I understand. In fiction its usually used to signify that a character is really old, i.e. from a time where the pronoun was commonly used. Alternatively characters may use it in incantations, or villain speeches, or other similar things where characters are being kinda dramatic? It can be seen as somewhat similar to when a character in English uses “thou” and “thee” and the like, but it’s not exactly the same.

Nobosetonman (Sproink): “Ode”, written in katakana as “オデ”; (unsure)

Note: Sproink’s first person pronoun is somewhat inconsistent. In YKW 1 and Busters he uses “Washi”, written in katakana as “ワシ”, which is a somewhat informal pronoun commonly used in fiction to indicate that a character is somewhat old, usually a senior citizen, or somewhat older that middle-aged at least. In YKW2 he uses “Ore” written in katakana as “オレ”, which is informal and masculine, and more age-neutral. In YKW3 he uses the aforementioned “Ode”, which I can’t find much information on and I rarely ever see it. If I had to guess I’d say it’s probably a regional variant of “Ore”, but I do not know for sure. If I had to guess based on other characters I have seen using it, I’d say in fiction at least its associated with “big simpleton” characters, but again, I’m just speculating, it could be completely different.

Tsuraretarō-maru (SV Snaggerjag): “Washi”, written in katakana as “ワシ”; indicates old age.

Note: In fiction, the pronoun “Washi” is mainly used to indicate that a character is old, usually a senior citizen, or somewhat older that middle-aged at least. Note that this doesn’t really reflect real life, as there are a lot of places in Japan where “Washi” is used by people regardless of age. It may also be used for characters from the past where the pronoun was more common.

Oboro Nyūdō (Massiface): “Washi”, written in katakana as “ワシ” ; indicates old age.

Borei Musha (Phantasmurai): “Ore”, written in katakana as “オレ”; Informal and masculine.

Yaburekabure-inchō (Dr. Maddiman): “Watashi”, written in kanji as “私”; formal and gender-neutral.

Note: From what I understand, in fiction it’s somewhat more common for men to use “Watashi compared to real life, in the sense that normally “Watashi” would feel too formal to use in informal situations. I could be wrong though. He also briefly uses “Ware”, written in kanji as “我” while being dramatic in YKW2.

Ikakamone-gichō (Chairman McKraken): “Watashi”, written in kanji as “私”; formal and gender-neutral.

Aobee Akabee (Duwheel): “Washi”, written in hiragana as “わし”; written in katakana as “ワシ” in Yokai Watch 1 ; indicates old age.

Tsuzurachun-dayū (Chirpster): “Washi”,written in katakana as “ワシ”, also  written in hiragana as “わし” once in Yokai Watch 1; indicates old age

Note: In Chirpster’s case, his overall speaking style seems to make it more clear that his usage of “Washi” comes from him literally being from an older time where the pronoun was more common. For all I know this could be the case with the others too, but yeah.

Aka Oni (Gargaros):  "Washi", written in katakana as “ワシ”; indicates old age

Note: In YKW1 Gargaros used “Ore” written in katakana as “オレ”, which is informal and masculine. As of YKW2 they’re shown to use “Washi”.

Ao Oni (Ogralus): “Washi”, written in katakana as “ワシ”;

Note: In YKW1 Ogralus used “Ore” written in katakana as “オレ”, which is informal and masculine. As of YKW2 they’re shown to use “Washi”.

Kuro Oni (Orcanos): “Washi”, written in katakana as “ワシ”; indicates old age
