The Sackett Brand - from The Sackett Companion It was a wild and broken country known only to the Apache, miles and miles of forest and running streams bordering on the half-desert lying to the west and south, a country in which a man could both run and hide. What chance did one man have against forty? One man, already badly hurt and without weapons? Then the Sacketts began to come from wherever they heard the news. Some were near, some far, but a Sackett was in trouble so they asked no questions. They came running: Nolan, Orlando, Flagan, Galloway, Tyrel, Orrin, and Falcon. Even Parmalee, the Flatland Sackett. Riding for the Mogollon from wherever the news found them, and as has been said, even one Sackett was quite a few. ********~~~******** WILLIAM TELL SACKETT: Left the mountains of Tennessee to take part in the Civil War. Joined the Sixth Cavalry of the Union, served on detached service in other areas. Also in SACKETTS LAND, MOJAVE CROSSING, THE SACKETT BRAND, TREASURE MOUNTAIN, and LONELY ON THE MOUNTAIN, and briefly, as just another working cowboy, in DARK CANYON. He could barely read and write, having attended school for only a few months on several different occasions. He could ride, rope, shoot any kind of a gun, and was skilled with stock. He grew up hunting, trapping, and fighting. Six feet three inches, he was lean, but broad-shouldered. Essentially a lonely man, he was shy with strangers. Accustomed to hard work, he preferred to be let alone to work at whatever he was doing, from punching cows to mining. He liked women but was uncomfortable around them. At dances or parties he could usually be found somewhere in the background, simply enjoying the music and watching the others, and was content to have it so. Of the great love of his life he rarely spoke, and even his brothers knew nothing of her. He met her and lost her during his Civil War days. Discover the incredible history and background of the entire Sackett family collected in the "Facts Behind the Fiction" of THE SACKETT COMPANION by Louis L'Amour https://www.louislamour.com/novels/sackettbrand.htm https://www.louislamour.com/nonfiction/sackettcomp.htm #louislamour https://www.instagram.com/p/CoqYD6RPmt2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Michael Bolotin (born February 26, 1953), known professionally as Michael Bolton, is an American singer and songwriter. Bolton performed in the hard rock and heavy metal music genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, both on his early solo albums and those he recorded as the frontman of the band Blackjack. He became better known for his series of pop rock ballads, recorded after a stylistic change in the late 1980s.
Bolton has sold more than 75 million records, and recorded eight top 10 albums and two number-one singles on the Billboard charts, as well as winning six American Music Awards and two Grammy Awards. He has performed with artists including Lucia Aliberti, Patti LaBelle, José Carreras, Tony Cetinski, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Wynonna Judd, B.B. King, The Lonely Island, Luciano Pavarotti, Percy Sledge, and Zucchero.
Early Life
Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, George Bolotin, was a local official in the Democratic Party, and his mother, Helen, was a homemaker. He has a brother, Orrin, and a sister, Sandra. By age 7, Bolton was able to play the saxophone. He began writing songs at age 9. At age 14, he formed a group, the Nomads, that were signed to a singles contract by Epic Records when Bolton was 16. With his parents' permission, he dropped out of high school and left home at age 15 to travel cross country along U.S. Route 66 and pursue music full-time. He took odd jobs, including as Paula Abdul’s babysitter.
Hard rock and songwriting
Bolton began recording in 1975 at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This first album was self-titled using his original family name of Bolotin. Early in his musical career, he focused on hard rock, with his band Blackjack once opening for heavy metal artist Ozzy Osbourne on tour. It was rumored that in 1983 Bolton auditioned for, but was denied, the lead vocalist position with Osbourne's former band, Black Sabbath. Bolton later stated this was untrue, saying "That rumor about me auditioning for Black Sabbath was only a rumor, I don't know how on earth it started." In 2015, Bolton's 1980 song "Maybe It's the Power of Love" with Blackjack was sampled by rapper Kanye West for his song "Never Let Me Down".
After anglicizing his family name to Bolton, he gained his first major hit as a songwriter, co-writing "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" for Laura Branigan, previously best known for singing the pop hit "Gloria". Narrowly missing the Top 10 on the US pop chart, Branigan took the song to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1983. The two sought to work with each other again, and their next collaboration was when Bolton co-wrote "I Found Someone" for Branigan in 1985. Her version was only a minor hit, but two years later, Cher resurrected the song, and with it her own singing career. Bolton co-wrote several other songs for both singers. Bolton recorded his own rendition of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" in 1988, which reached number one on the Hot 100.
Tumblr media
Bolton achieved his greatest success as a pop singer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He performed songs written by or co-written with major hit songwriters of the era including Diane Warren and Desmond Child (as well as "Steel Bars" penned by Bolton and Bob Dylan). but also had several hits that were remakes of 1960s soul classics. One of his first major hits was his 1987 interpretation of the Otis Redding classic "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay". Redding's widow, Zelma Redding, said she was so moved by Bolton's performance "that it brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me so much of my husband that I know if he heard it, he would feel the same." Always interested in soul music and Motown classics, in 1989, Bolton released a cover version of "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles, with which he had another hit. In 1991, Bolton released the album Time, Love & Tenderness which featured his Grammy Award-winning cover version of "When a Man Loves a Woman", first recorded by Percy Sledge.
From 1987 to 1995, Bolton had four top ten albums and seven top ten songs in the U.S. He had even greater success on the adult contemporary chart with where her had a string of 14 consecutive top ten hits including eight number ones.
Bolton also had 12 top ten songs in Canada, but was less successful outside of North America with four top ten singles in the UK and a few others in various other European countries.
Bolton's work during the period has been criticized for being derivative, and in 1992, the Isley Brothers filed a lawsuit against Bolton, claiming his 1991 hit song "Love Is a Wonderful Thing" plagiarized their 1966 song of the same name. A fifteen-year legal battle resulted in a $4.2 million payment to the Isleys from Bolton, his co-writer and their publisher. A previous similar lawsuit regarding "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" had been settled in Bolton's favor.
Tumblr media
Bolton's last Top 40 single in the US was the 1997 hit "Go the Distance" (from the Disney animated movie Hercules), which peaked at No. 1 on the US adult contemporary chart. He hired conductor Larry Baird, the orchestral musical director, conductor, and arranger for The Moody Blues, Three Dog Night, and Al Jarreau, for his 2001 tour.
Later Work
Bolton's popularity declined in the late 1990s, but he continued to have adult contemporary hits through the mid-2000s. He released albums every year or two through the mid-2010s. His album Only a Woman Like You was released in 2001 with the title song co-written by Shania Twain. In 2006, Bolton and Nicollette Sheridan, his fiancée at the time, sang a duet, "The Second Time Around", for the album Bolton Swings Sinatra. For Over the Rainbow, an album which was recorded in five days, Bolton recorded the song "New York, New York", which was also on his Bolton Swings Sinatra album. This was for an episode of the TV series, Challenge Anneka. The proceeds from the album went to children's hospices across the UK. Bolton released his album One World One Love in the UK on September 21, 2009. The first single, "Just One Love", was released one week earlier. In June 2011, Bolton collaborated with Indian musician A. R. Rahman for a song recorded for Gems – The Duets Collection. In 2013, Bolton released the album Ain't No Mountain High Enough: A Tribute to Hitsville U.S.A., which featured duets with Kelly Rowland, Melanie Fiona and Orianthi.
Tumblr media
In addition to his recordings, Bolton has continued to perform publicly. In March 2007, he toured South Africa for the first time, where he was the headline act at Jacaranda 94.2 FM's two-day concert. He performed a duet entitled "Il Mio Amico" with the Italian singer Anna Tatangelo at the Sanremo Music Festival 2008. The song was originally sung by Tatangelo alone, but the duet version contained English lyrics as well.
In May 2011, Bolton was featured as a guest vocalist in The Lonely Island's song "Jack Sparrow" on their Turtleneck & Chain album. His performance with the comedic hip-hop trio focused on his (intentionally) off-topic chorus and miscommunication with the group, and the video featured him dressed in costumes as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Forrest Gump, Erin Brockovich, and Tony Montana from Scarface.
Bolton has also performed his music in other media. In August 2006, Bolton he one of Lucy Lawless's duet partners on the Fox Broadcasting Company network's program Celebrity Duets, which Simon Cowell's Syco Productions Company produced for the network. In late 2013 and early 2014, he appeared in Honda commercials in which he sings. In 2015, he sang on an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver concerning the IRS. In the same year, he performed in a Pizza Hut commercial singing Jingle Bells while a family opens up their pizza order. Bolton contributed "Upbeat Inspirational Song About Life" and its reprise to Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, which was released on July 27, 2018. He also voices the Tiger that sings the song in the film. In 2021, he guest-starred in season six of The Masked Singer where he sang Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Faith Evans as "Skunk". In 2023, he competed in season nine as "Wolf". After he was eliminated on "DC Superheroes Night", he took the time to promote his upcoming album and did an encore by performing "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You". Bolton competed in the American Song Contest, representing Connecticut and performing the song Beautiful World, with his first performance in the first week, on March 21, 2022. He made it to the finals, finishing in seventh place.
Film Career
Bolton has made several cameo appearances in feature films and television, usually appearing as himself, such as in Meet Wally Sparks (1997), Two and a Half Men (2012),and The Nanny (1998).
In September 2010, Bolton was a contestant on the 11th season of Dancing with the Stars. He and his dance partner Chelsie Hightower were the second couple to be eliminated, on September 28, 2010.
On May 15, 2018, American Dream: Detroit, a documentary produced by Bolton, premiered in the Redford Theatre. Bolton loves Detroit and wanted to highlight its economic comeback. The documentary features interviews with several business moguls, singers and other Detroit natives, including Christopher Ilitch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Francis Ford Coppola, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, and Alice Cooper.
Although he has been rumored to have appeared as an extra in Dune (1984) as a "spice-eyed" drummer, Bolton has stated in interviews that it is not him.
Tumblr media
Personal life
Bolton describes himself as a "rebel Jew". He was raised in a liberal family, describing his childhood home as decorated with both a Hanukkah menorah and a Christmas tree. His grandparents kept a kashrut household. He left Hebrew school at age 12 when his rabbi forbade him from returning unless he stopped joking around. Nevertheless, Bolton became bar mitzvah at age 13 and maintains some beliefs in Judaism.
Bolton has been a vegetarian since 1970.
In January 2013, Bolton published an autobiography, The Soul of It All: My Music, My Life.
Bolton lives in Westport, Connecticut.
Relationships and Family
Bolton was married to Maureen McGuire from 1975 to 1990. They have three daughters together, each born two years apart: Isa, Holly, and Taryn. He became a grandfather for the first time in October 2010, through his daughter Taryn. As of February 2019, he has six grandchildren.
Bolton was introduced to actress Nicollette Sheridan in 1992 by adult contemporary/jazz saxophonist Kenny G. Bolton and Sheridan dated until breaking up in 1995. They reunited again in 2005, becoming engaged in March 2006, However, it was confirmed in August 2008 that they had broken off their engagement.
Since 1975, Bolton has released 24 studio albums and 35 singles. Nine of his singles have peaked at No. 1 on either the Billboard Hot 100 or the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts in the US.

ORRIN EVANS/ERIC REVIS/JEFF ”TAIN” WATTS, JAZZ ST LOUIS, 20 MAY 2022 with a COUCH TOUR ADDENDUM: David Berkman/Sean Conly/Billy Mintz, Mezzrow’s, 19 May 2022
We had planned to see ORRIN EVANS with Kevin Eubanks when we signed up for the Jazz St Louis season as Evans is a favorite. I was not disappointed to trade the guitarist for such a stellar rhythm section and what a trade it was.
Eric Revis is a powerful bassist who, befitting his craft, centers the band while always prodding. He listens big and has an expressive inquisitive face. Particularly when he soloes he sings along with himself—and those are melodies worth singing. If Revis is a fixture of Branford Marsalis’s quartet (but he was also set to bring in Kris Davis for a late April 2022 New Music Circle gig), then I first became aware of Jeff ”Tain” Watts as Wynton Marsalis came on the scene. He too is a force. While perfectly capable of playing quietly, he isn’t ever shy. I noted him as “swings AND fidgets” for the opening blues (Monk, we were told, though I couldn’t place it) and “irrepressible” for Evans’s tribute to Ralph Peterson (which I heard him do at Mezzrow’s from the end of April) and he churled to open Geri Allen’s Feed the Fire.
But it was properly Evans’s gig and, elite as the rhythm section was, he had enough fire to lead it. He called it the tribute tour with a second more recognizable Monk (still can’t name it) to open. Both were dense and appropriately jagged, rhythmically and harmonically. The Peterson tribute Professor Forward was lush and appealing, but the Amazing Grace also for Geri Allen was just exquisite. He/they backed into the theme from a dreamy beginning and then some general gospel feeling to the achingly beautiful theme. Feed The Fire was, well, fiery.
The closer was cryptic at least in announcement as it was to be On Your Mark, Get Set, Go into “PBS.” Revis started aggressively and it all churned nicely until it resolved into my favorite Evans composition The Red Door with its catchy theme. But “PBS” was actually the final tribute, Fred Rogers’s It’s Such A Good Feeling including a very sweet but nicely wobbly vocal from Evans and a two part sing along for the rest of us. It probably is ultimately kitschy, but, in the moment, it was heartfelt and just nice. It doesn’t hurt that the tune itself is worthy of exploration, lush and bright. And if you’re going to explore it, then it should be sung.
So, just wonderful.
On my last night out of town, the Small’s Live Stream (in real time to boot) gave me DAVID BERKMAN whom I’d seen before but this time with Sean Conly and the deceptively subtle Billy Mintz. Berkman did an album that juxtaposed the music of John Coltrane and Pete Seeger. The latter played Woody Guthrie’s There’s Mean Things Happening In This Land—and so there are. Differently catchy from the Fred Rogers tune but equally interesting for jazz players. I did place the Monk tune, Pannonica, in the second slot. It was gently done. The next to last tune was an intricately done standard that I couldn’t place that benefited from Conly’s insistent bass.
Berkman’s Echo Friend opened so fluidly I thought it was a standard. Berkman danced intricately over the subtle bed the Conly and Mintz laid down. His midset Weird Knock was nicely off kilter in interesting ways that prompted Mintz to being busier than usual but still minimalist. They closed with Mintz’s light which was a pretty ballad. Alas the stream froze, so I missed the last several choruses. I would have gladly heard it, but I had enough to appreciate the gig.
I add this appendix as my next Small’s Live project is to bounce from Mezzrow’s to Small’s and back for the 7:30, 9, and 10:30 gigs from May 11 to replicate another night in the West Village. But Berkman et al deserve a souvenir too.

SMART BOMB
The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
May 3, 2022
ALTERNATE REALITY
Feeling crazy lately? If not, there's probably something wrong with you — unless you are living in a sensory-depravation chamber. Here are some things that may be cramping your brain: 1) Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Disney is trying to make kids into sexual deviants. 2) Fox foghorn Sean Hannity's tweets reveal he was a shadow chief of staff for Trump. 3) Bomb-thrower Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who accused Republican colleagues of having orgies, was photographed in women's lingerie. 4) Marjorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans say Democrats are pedophiles. The staff here at Smart Bomb contacted our futurist Calliope Luna for a heads-up on coming brain benders: 5) West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin and Arizona Sen. Kristen Cinema are actually the same person who often changes costumes. 6) Donald Trump Jr. will become vice president of Trump Media World and disappear. 7) Utah Sen. Mike Lee is called on a religious mission to Latvia, where he discovers beer and women. 8) Utah Congressman Burgess Owens is abducted by aliens who immediately return him — yecht. 9) St. Peter refuses admission to the late Sen. Orrin Hatch. 10) Sen. Mitt Romney's wife's prized Olympic dressage horses sold to packing plant. 11) Ann Romney refuses to eat at McDonalds.
UNDER THE BANNER OF…  VERY WEIRD STUFF
Oh boy, the Hulu mini-series “Under the Banner of Heaven” about the grizzly 1984 Utah murders of a woman and her 15-month-old baby by a pair of Mormon fundamentalists crackpots makes the real Mormon Church look... well, kinda weird. The bigwigs in the LDS Tower of Power are P.O.ed — to say the least. There they were minding their own business, building shopping malls and running the state legislature when that heretic Jon Krakauer dug the whole mess up in 2003 with his investigative book, “Under the Banner of Heaven.” Now comes the TV drama adaptation of the book — with a little artistic license just for kicks. The old boys may be praying that P.T. Barnum was right when he said, “There's no such thing as bad publicity.” The miniseries pulls viewers into some weird aspects of the church, noted for its now-banned practice of polygamy. Strange stuff bubbles up, some of which makes plural marriage look rather tame: the Mountain Meadows Massacre, blood atonement and green Jell-O with marshmallows. Audiences across the country will gobble up this true-crime thriller — a real bummer for Mormon missionaries who knock on neighborhood doors, asking, “What do you know about the Mormon Church and would you like to know more?”
GOODBYE LAKE POWELL — HELLO PARADISE
The Logic: St. George needs more water on account of all its new people and golf courses are thirsty. The Solution: Just build a 140-mile pipeline from Lake Powell and suck it's Colorado River water to the other side of the arid Southern Utah. It could cost $1 billion but what the heck. The Problem: The Great Basin is in a 30-year drought and things aren't looking good. St. George Water Officials: No worries, there's enough water for everyone and water skiers and fishers at Lake Powell shouldn't hog it up. Uncertainty: Climate scientists warn that global climate change makes computer models based on previous weather patterns less than accurate. St. George Water Officials: We've got to keep all of our 19 golf courses green and that's not easy in the 105-degree summers. News Flash: Lake Powell shrinks to 25 percent of its average volume. Result: The once half-billion tourist industry along the Utah-Arizona line is evaporating. Say goodbye to the pipeline. Serendipity: The marvels of Glen Canyon that have been covered by Lake Powell since the creation of Glen Canyon Dam in 1964 are coming into view again. Monkeywrench Gang: Ken Slight — Seldom Seen Smith in Ed Abbey's famed tome and an iconic environmentalist — has lived to see the return of Paradise.
Post script — That's going to do it for another beautiful spring week here in Zion where we keep track of Don Jr. so you don't have to. Fasten your chin straps, folks, because Donny is coming to West Valley City on June 17 with MAGA crackpot Madison Cawthorn as part of the right-wing Utah Liberty Festival. In his road show last week in Ohio stumping for Senate hopeful J.D. Vance, Donny joked to the MAGA crowd that Democrats are proud to be “groomers,” in reference to the GOP's new battlecry labeling libs as “pro-pedophilia.” Hey, all's fair in love and war and Republican politics. Donny's dad was happy to support the “Hillbilly Elegy” author but forgot his name calling him J.D. Mandel — Vance's opponent's last name. Oh well, it's just a small detail. A bigger deal is brewing in Fulton County, Ga. where District Attorney Fani Willis has begun submitting evidence to a special grand jury concerning Trump's (recorded) demand that Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “find 11,780 votes” to defeat Joe Biden, or else. No surprise — a torrent of death threats has been unleashed toward Raffensperger's family and the D.A. Yep, when you think about liberty, Trump is the first thing that comes to mind. So bring on the Utah Liberty Festival. What could possibly go wrong.
Well Wilson, the world is a bad place, a terrible place to live, but we don't want die. So you and the guys in the band must have something up your sleeve that will help gird our loins so we can enjoy Mother Earth and her beautiful spring:
As I walk through This wicked world Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity. I ask myself Is all hope lost? Is there only pain and hatred, and misery? And each time I feel like this inside There's one thing I wanna know What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? And as I walk on Through troubled times My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes So where are the strong And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony 'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

Recently there has been a influx of missing and murdered children and the saddest thing about these cases are that most of these tragic cases could most probably have been  avoided. I realise that covid is a major factor. It's common sense that anybody who lives with  abusive or unfit care givers, would be at serious risk of harm and neglect. And if vulnerable children fell though the cracks, did the same thing dangerous offenders and predators? How well where they monitored to check that they were sticking, to the conditions of their bail, parole or probation and not slipping back into  old offending patterns?
SUMMER WELLS 6 went missing 15/06/2021 No arrests made at this time

Louis L'Amour's Sackett Series of 17 Novels became a driving force in Louis' career. http://www.louislamour.com/sackett/ In 1959 Louis L'Amour wrote The Daybreakers, his first novel about his fictional Sackett family. It chronicled the story of two brothers moving west to escape the feuding and poverty of the Tennessee mountains. The Daybreakers spans a great deal of western history from the early cattle drives to the legal battles and racial tension over land distribution in early New Mexico Territory. It includes some of L'Amour's greatest characters; the hard bitten Tyrell Sackett and his all too affable older brother Orrin; Tom Sunday, the powerful man who starts as their mentor only to become consumed with hatred and jealousy; the scheming Jonathan Pritts and his lovely daughter Laura, soon to become Laura Sackett; Don Luis, the embattled owner of the Alvarado Land Grant and his feuding lieutenants Juan Torres and Chico Cruz. While continuing to write Sackett stories set in the old west, Louis L'Amour also went back to establish the family's roots in Elizabethan England. "Sackett's Land" and "To the Far Blue Mountains" have much of their action set in the British Isles. "The Warrior's Path" splits its local between the Spartan conditions of the early Pilgrim colonies and the tropical chaos of Port Royal, Jamaica, headquarters to the pirates plying the Spanish Main. "Jubal Sackett" travels west to what would become Colorado in the time of the Conquistadors. The jump in time to "Ride the River" unfortunately shows us how much this series suffered from Louis' death. This story is set in the 1830s and concerns young Echo Sackett and her troubles claiming an inheritance in Philadelphia and along her way home. Louis had originally intended to write another seven or eight Sackett stories. One was to have covered the Revolutionary War period, there was to have been a Mountain Man novel about Tell and Orrin's father, a story about Tell's experiences in the Civil War, and several others. THE SACKETT 17 - Available in Paperback, and as Audio Books on CD and MP3. http://www.louislamour.com/sackett/ https://www.instagram.com/p/Cis9VcwvUBu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Orrin, 4, and Orson, 3, went missing Dec. 21. The boys’ adoptive father, Trezell West, has said the children were playing outside as he gathered firewood. He said he briefly went back inside the house, and when he came out the boys were gone.
Police say 16 “mass area” searches have been conducted, investigators have searched three locations outside the state and more than 200 tips have been followed up. Data is continuing to be extracted from cellular and electronic devices, and seized items are being forensically examined.
All family members connected to the boys have been interviewed, according to police.
