Fukuro mono (嚢物) purses and bags, chart by Nadeshico Rin.
Kimono don’t have pocket in the Western sense, and the easiest way of carrying something is to tuck it into your tamoto (袂, dangling pocket-like part of a kimono sleeve). But people also used many types of pouchesand cases to carry their trinkets, here are some which were used by Edo period city-deller women:
Kakemamori (懸守) amulet case, made from a cylindrical pouch slipped on a cord. In Middle Age, those pouches were put around the neck by pilgrims, mostly women, to carry gofu (talisman). Temples and sanctuaries sold amulets to facilitate childbirth, and counteract menstruation impurity (月水を穢), which was (still is nowadays) a big taboo in Japanese society. Other amulets existed, for example to protect one’s safety, or to ward off disasters. Kakemamori went through style changes but their use remained late into Meiji era.
Sage tabako ire (提げ煙草入れ) hanging tobacco pouch, put on by tucking the netsuke (根付 decorative toggle) into the obi, and adjusted with ojime (緒締, decorative closing bead). They were paired with kiseru 煙管 pipes, put away in tsutsu 筒 cases. Those pouches were used by men and women alike.
Tamoto otoshi (袂落とし) pocket sleeve pouches, put on around the neck over the underlayer, and accessed through the kimono sleeves openings. Several types existed, like kamiire ( 紙入れ small handbag, wallet), or straps holding handy tenugui towels. Those convenient pouches were used by men and women alike.
Kagami ire (鏡入れ) make-up pouch, often decorated with a hana kusari (華鎖, dangling charm), and holding several portable items: hake (刷毛, make-up brush), beni fude  (紅筆, lipstick brush), beni ita (紅板, lipstick palette, the green hue is the mark of true safflower), oshiroi (白粉, face powder), tekagami (手鏡, handmirror), etc. Tbh, I found hard to distinguish modern kagamiire from hakoseko without being able to open them and check to content, especially as they can be a bit of both ^^;
Hakoseko (箱迫) women billfold-like clutch, slipped into the futokoro (bosom collar fold when a kimono is worn, just above a woman obi). Made from heavily decorated brocade, those were first used by women of the samurai class to carry kaishi (懐紙, tissue paper) and other small items like birabira kanzashi (びらびら簪, dangling hairpin) or nioi fukuro (匂い袋, perfume bag). Nowadays, those are mainly used for wedding or shichigosan attires.

Hello! I wanted to make a request, basically headcanons of kaigaku, tengen and obanai with a geisha reader,in case you dont know about geishas let me explain it to you
Geishas are a class of female Japanese performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts. Their distinct appearance is characterised by long, trailing kimono, traditional hairstyles and oshiroi make-up. Geisha entertain at parties known as ozashiki, often for the entertainment of wealthy clientele, as well as performing on stage and at festivals.
Usually are mistaken for oirans(prostitute) from the western people due to the similarities of their kimono and makeup.
I hope this helps and have a nice day!
Oh! Okay, I’ll try this! I’m not really sure it’ll be good, thank you! A Geisha sounds like a wonderful person!
Inadama Kaigaku
Tumblr media
Kaigaku is so stunned by you entertaining and making others laugh on stage, that he can barely keep himself composed. You’re just so beautiful and funny, what is there not to love?
Kaigaku feels a bit underneath you and jealous, since all your gigs are for wealthy clientele and you hit off so well with everybody you make conversation with. He doesn’t want to lose you, so he gets mad
Kaigaku is very defensive when anybody dare try to proclaim you’re a Oiran. Yes, the similarities are uncanny but you aren’t that low! And Kaigaku will scare away the people who do say that
Uzui Tengen
Tumblr media
Tengen is a classy man of music himself so he is very interested in you and has plenty of money and resources to back up his request. He loves Geishas himself and attends their shows, including yours
Tengen and his wives, help put on your beautiful makeup and clothing everyday. He will make you look so splendid, the men will drop to the floor at the sight of you. He always proclaims
Tengen is the one who helps you around. Your kimono is very long and people could step on it, that’s why he is there to make sure not a single inch of your beauty is tainted. He is protective like that
Iguro Obanai
Tumblr media
Obanai is very attracted to how talented and beautiful you and your image are. You radiate elegancy, and he simply loves it, he doesn’t have to buy to be around you? Does he?
Obanai will happily buy you brand new songwriting paper and instruments for you to use for your special events, and the way you smile. Your happiness will always be his happiness
Obanai also attends your performance pieces and art shows as to be your biggest support, as he is. He wants to always be there for you to show his devotion and his passion for supporting you

❥ You cannot deny how the mood at the party lights up more from your point of view whenever you see a familiar, flashy visitor stand out among the crowd.
❥ The man would watch you intensely with his fuschia orbs, observing the littlest of your actions. You knew how good he was with music and the arts when you once had the chance to talk to him.
❥ Whenever he visits, he makes sure to tell you how good you are at singing, saying he can "hear the flashiness in every note," which would make you blush furiously beneath the oshiroi on your face.
❥ Sometimes, Tengen would shoo away the people who were gathering around you, making sure that he could spend time with you. The man would never fail to lift your spirits.
❥ You're aware that the man already has three wives, but there are times that Tengen will just tell you that he wants to make you his fourth. Saying that you'll never regret it if you choose to do so.
❥ Tengen would shower you with lavish gifts. It's not that you ask that of him; he just wants to. New kimonos? Check! Expensive hair pins? Check! Gems? Check! Tengen would give it all even if you wouldn't tell him.
❥ The man would always tell you that there are flashier things than being married to art. He would always try to convince you to escape with him. But even if you would love to, you value your passion as much as you value your life. So then, Tengen would just always visit you.
❥ One night, you were awoken from your deep sleep when you felt someone touch your cheek. And when you opened your eyes, Tengen was there, staring at you with his glistening fuschia eyes.
❥ That's the first and last time that Tengen has sneaked into your room. As much as you wanted to ask how he managed to enter the place, you couldn't bring yourself to do so, as you just ended up adoring how beautiful this man is. Tengen plants a soft kiss on your forehead. Saying that you should continue loving art and devote yourself to it. He also adds that he's definitely proud of you, and he loves how flashy you are when you're on stage, as you make the stars jealous.
❥ Now, Tengen still pays you visits, adoring how wonderful you perform on stage. But then, with a blink of an eye, he would disappear in the crowd after flashing you his most flamboyant grin, showing you how happy he is with what you're doing.
🌸𝐎𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐢 𝐈𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐨🌸
Tumblr media
❥ Even when you were still a maiko, you were always enchanted by this enigmatic ravenette clientelle who always appeared at the parties you performed at, watching you carefully with his yellow and turquiose eyes.
❥ And even now that you're one of the most beautiful and talented geishas in town, you can still see him around but have never had the chance to talk to him because lots of other clients want your company.
❥ But one time, you finally had the chance to talk with this enigmatic man. And heck, he isn't the conversationalist type. So you try your best to make him speak, wondering why he had bandages wrapped around his mouth in the first place.
❥ He would just shrug, but then hand you the most beautiful jade hair pin that you have ever received.
"Take that and tell me if you ever lost it." "Why?" "I'll buy you a new one."
❥ Even if Obanai had told you that, you still took care of the jade pin that he had given you.
❥ You know that Obanai is just supposed to watch you, but sometimes you will find your hands entwined with his under the table.
❥ You know that you can't be with this man even if you wanted to, as you have already chosen to devote your life to art and entertainment. Obanai isn't against that. He always made sure to tell you how much he adored you.
❥ He won't look at you when he praises you.
❥ But still, despite that, you would still choose his quiet and calm company over others. He makes you feel special.
❥ Obanai would never say it, but the man had always been watching you through Kaburamaru, keeping you safe from demons even if he had to give you special visits that you'd never know.
🌸𝐊𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐤𝐮🌸
Tumblr media
❥ Kaigaku would always make his presence known at every party that you hosted and performed at. He would definitely make his way in front of the crowd to watch you perform your best.
❥ Your first meeting isn't as sweet as you had imagined, as he thought you were an oiran, which freaked you out. But then, moments after that, the man was content to clap for you in the crowd.
❥ Surely Kaigaku's not the sweetest one, but whenever he manages to get your attention from all of your clients, he will share his apple with you. You would love this small, sweet gesture, as this is one of the moments when he wouldn't appear too harsh.
❥ The man would never directly praise you; he's just too shy to do so.
❥ He'll tell you how your motions in dancing could make a great breathing style if you ever choose to become a demon slayer like him. Yes, Kaigaku wants you to turn back to being a geisha and join him as a demon slayer; for him, your life would be more meaningful there.
❥ You would never agree with him, saying that whatever your passion is, it matters as much as being happy.
❥ One night, Kaigaku visited the house that you belong to. He had brought you kimonos and told you that they would look good on you. But then, that's the last night that you have seen the demon slayer. Admit it or not, you miss him.
❥ Lately, whenever you slept, you would sense some presence but ignore it as you were too tired to think about it. But one night, you'll swear that you have seen Kaigaku beside you, whispering how much he misses you but can't be with you anymore.
❥ Without you ever knowing, Kaigaku's always there, watching you in secret, checking you at night as he can never visit your parties like before anymore or walk under the sun to meet you face-to-face ever again.

𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒊𝒕!
I wanted to make it like Y/N leaves her passion for them buuuut I can't do it XD I just feel like if I was in her place, I wouldn't turn my back at being a geisha even if it's Uzui who'll ask me to do so (I freaking love the guy tho huhu) XD But that's just me lol
Anywaaaays, feel free to request anything! FIC-RELATED PLEASE HAHAHA

The look of... VII: Mukojima
Welcome to the 18th installment of this series (my 7th). This time, we’re having a look at the Geigi that work in one of Tokyo's Hanamachi: Mukojima (向島).
Tumblr media
Historical context Geisha started to live in Mukojima in the early Meiji period (1868-1912) [1]. From the Edo to Meiji period, Mukojima was a recreational area for the common people, and was frequented by Yanagibashi and Yoshiwara Geisha with their customers. [3] The earliest record of a Mukojima Geisha (known to me) is Omomo お百, who was featured in "Contemporary Beauties", 1897 [2]. In 1906, 30 Geisha lived in the area. By 1928, their number had increased to 239. In 1940, several Kenban united, further increasing the number of Mukojima Geisha to 1300. Like in all Hanamachi around Japan, the number declined steadily after the second world war. In 1951, their number was 600, in 1993 240 [7], in 1996 170, in 2007 120 [3], in 2020 around 90 [4]. This makes Mukojima approximately as populated as Gion Kobu and Tokyo's largest Hanamachi.

Notes Mukojima allows part-time workers, calling them Kamome かもめ [5]. Most of them are students or work in a different job already. Their task is mainly assisting Geisha/Hangyoku in the Ozashiki. Kamome can become Hangyoku or Geisha if they wish to work full-time. Mukojima dancers also play instruments at ozashiki: Hangyoku frequently play shime-daiko, Tachikata more often play ko-tsutsumi, sometimes fue. Shamisen seems so be reserved for Jikata.
Usually, Ryotei and Okiya are separate businesses in Tokyo. In Mukojima, however, several Ryotei also function as Okiya [3], similar to how in Kyoto, several Ochaya also have an attached Okiya.

Hi! Do you have any information on maiko and gecko skin care routines or traditional beauty secrets? Any books or resources on the subject that are reputable?
Unfortunately I don't as that's not really talked about much. The only things that I know are that they use baby oil to take off their oshiroi, they use a bran scrub on their skin to get the remainder of it off and to wash out their pores (which is what makes their skin so smooth), and that their skin care routines used to contain nightingale droppings ^^

What kind of style that the mommies usually wear?
FUBUKI
I see her wearing a simple kurotomesode on most days. Her kimonos are colors of different shades of blue. Her hair is neat with a plain pin. She is very elegant and neat in her taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AYAKUMO
She is quite bold and flamboyant. She uses oshiroi on her skin with rouge, with her hair styled elaborately with a lot of pins and accessories. Usually has a fan with her or a kiseru on her hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MANEKI
She usually uses a hakama with some frills but she would have to wear a kurotomesode during formal events. Hakama is much easier to run and jump in. But she also loves frilly and cute things. Maneki is quite an active woman but she is forced to behave by your father due to the fact that she is pregnant.

Can i ask headcanons of genya and kaigaku with a geisha s/o?
If you don't know about geishas let me explain what geishas are:
Geishas are a class of female Japanese performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts. Their distinct appearance is characterised by long, trailing kimono, traditional hairstyles and oshiroi make-up. Geisha entertain at parties known as ozashiki, often for the entertainment of wealthy clientele, as well as performing on stage and at festivals.
They often are mistaken for oirans(prostitute) for the western people due to the similarities of their kimono and makeup(geishas can't have sex with clients).
I hope this is not so detailled for your taste and youre Free to decline
Sorry I haven’t filled any requests lately, I’ve been procrastinating (I have no excuse). For some reason this one really stumped me but I swear I tried my best
Tumblr media
Kaigaku is more than proud of your beauty and work
And it’s a boost to his (ever so important) for you to be with him
That being said, the amount of admirers you have really irks him
He can’t make a scene either since he’s worried it might damage your reputation
All he can do is clench his jaw and watch
While he finds you beautiful in your make-up and styled hair, he also likes seeing your without it
Having someone who doesn't care whether your in make-up, or being the definition of perfection helps you a lot too
Sometimes he’ll sneak in after hours, and silently have tea with you
He worries a lot when he has to go on long missions, but you can bet he makes sure the first place he goes is towards you
Tumblr media
Genya feels incredible lucky to have someone as beautiful as you
Genya gets jealous as well but how he handles it is dependant on where you’re at
If you’re out in public with any admirers or maybe clients then he’ll try to stifle the feels and wait
He might pout a bit after it when you two are alone, but in his broody Genya way
Don’t worry, a sweet kiss on the cheek is all it takes to reassure him
Like Kaigaku, he’s fine with you taking off the formal wear and having something less ornate on
He does his best to see you as often as possible, but with work that’s not always easiest
Despite that thought, he’ll be sure to have his crow delivery messages

Hi Slug! Which HypMic boys do you think would know how to apply makeup and how good would they be with it? How about the others?
I am quite possibly the least knowledgeable person about makeup alive. If you put me in a room with James Charles, I'd cancel him out like antimatter, probably annihilating the planet in the resulting explosion. But being clueless has never stopped me, so I am going to make shit up with reckless abandon!
Ichirou: Yeah you know he's into those uhhh you know those anime girl facemasks they sell? He's into those. Wears them on the daily. Got to get that Buster Beautiful Skin.
Jirou: Anything Ichirou does, Jirou does, so he's right out there with Ichirou wearing JoJo's Bizarre Adventures facial masks all over the house.
Saburou: No he's a gamer lol
Samatoki: Hell yes, brother, Samatoki is all about the LOOKS. How does Mr. Hardcore Yokohama Bad Boy walk into the office and demand respect if he's not gussied up to the FUCKING nines? We're talking 30 product "simple routine" videos on Youtube. We're talking SIBLING NIGHTS with Nemu. Have you seen those eyelashes? What is the point of winged eyeliner if it cannot achieve liftoff?
Juuto: A gentleman always needs to look their best, even when they're chasing criminals or trekking through the woods or barreling down the freeway at 200 km/h with Samatoki in the passenger seat. He wears enough concealer to block out the sun on the off chance that if Samatoki ever bites him (not like he's asking asking for this to happen, but you know... better safe than sorry) and turns out to be a vampire, Juuto won't shrivel up and immediately die.
Riou: Just because one lives in the woods doesn't mean that it's any excuse to not look their best at all times. The woods have many natural ingredients, and Riou takes full advantage of them. Nothing like slathering river mud on your face - it's like a mud pack! Exfoliating! He finds wild cucumbers, slices 'em up, and sticks them on his eyes.
Ramuda: Ramuda regularly spends hundreds of thousands of yen on make-up purchases and writes them off as a business expense on his taxes. Does he actually use them, or is this an excuse to have Chuuouku foot exorbitant bills? Only Ramuda knows.
Gentarou: Gentarou possesses all the manic, unfathomably odd energy of a Lush shop but at the same time has an aesthetic to stick to. Only non-modern beauty treatments allowed. We're talking kohl. We're talking oshiroi powder. We're talking dying at the age of 30 because of lead, arsenic, and other poisonous metals featuring heavily in said non-modern beauty treatments.
Dice: Ramuda does it for him. He dolls Dice up in ways that do such dangerous things to Gentarou that they probably contribute to poor Gen's early demise.
Jakurai: He has a long-ass hair routine for his long-ass hair (according to the Spotify radios which may or may not be canon), so he definitely has a makeup routine as well. How else will he look like he just stepped out of a Maybelline ad for every candid shot shown in the manga?
Hifumi: It is his livelihood to look fucking fabulous, and Hifumi did not reach the position of top host in all of Shinjuku by half-assing his job. He is the king of cosmetics, the master of makeup, the sovereign of looking stunning. He owns ALL the things. Whether he's prouder of his Ninja Professional Countertop 6000 blender or his beauty blender [I have no clue what this is] is a topic of much contention.
Doppo: He is trying so hard. :( But all the concealer in the world can't conceal the fact that he is disgustingly overworked. He tries to draw on a smile with lipstick, but - wait, that just makes him sound like he's doing Joker facepaint. Doppo standing in front of a mirror going, "We live in a society." Never mind, scrap this idea. Moving on.
Sasara: Like everything Sasara, if it's funny, then it's appropriate. Sasara once owned a drawer full of eyelash extensions, not to wear, but to leave in innocuous places in Samatoki's office for Samatoki to find, scream at thinking they're bugs, and attempt to smash them with a rolled up newspaper.
Roshou: Once tried to rhyme "Sasara" with "mascara" for a bit only for it to fail.
Rei: Rubs a little baby oil on his pecs everyday to give 'em that golden glow. [Is this what it's used for? Besides babies. I don't actually know what it does for babies either.]
Kuukou: Vanity is forbidden for priests, but it's not vanity if it objectively slaps. In addition to doing his and Juushi's nails just for kicks, he also does Juushi's makeup for shows and Hitoya's for court appearances with big, spiky eyeliner. Juushi appreciates this. Hitoya... not as much.
Juushi: hi my name is jushi 14th mo'on aimono and i have jet black hair with golden moonlight-like highlights (that's how i get my name) and minty kinda green-purple whatever tf color they are eyes like limpid tears and kuukou tells me i look like bofa even though i don't know who that is. i love hot topic and i buy all my clothes from there. for example today i was wearing black lipstick, black eyeliner, white foundation, and red eyesha-
Hitoya: Not only is he serving the process, he is serving LOOKS. He draws on that beauty mark every day before going out to whoop legal ass.
Real answer: I have no fucking idea.

At the moment, she’s looking a little less than ready--she’s still in her underpants and her hair’s in her face.
Tumblr media
Unless the house is on fire, she’s not ready to go out at all. Let’s fix that!
Tumblr media
First, she has her hair combed and pulled off her face.
Tumblr media
If necessary, she has her hagurome, or teeth-blackening, reapplied, and re-plucks her eyebrows. The tooth-blackening was made iron filings or oak gall, among other ingredients, and served as an early form of dental sealant.
Tumblr media
Once her eyebrows are plucked, facial wax, or bintsuke, is applied to her face and the visible portion of her neck. This serves as an early form of makeup primer.
Tumblr media
Then, the white face paint, or oshiroi, is applied. As she’s a lady of rank, this is the “good” stuff, ugiusu no fun, made with white lead and nightingale droppings; ladies of lesser means (or queasy stomachs) used rice powder.
Tumblr media
Next, the beni, or safflower, lip paint is put on for the classic bold red lip.
Tumblr media
Once the lip paint is applied, melted sugar is painted over it to make it shine.
Tumblr media
Finally, charcoal is painted halfway up her face to make the classic hikimayu eyebrows.
Tumblr media
Now Lady Mukugetsubo can restyle her hair in the fashionable manner.
Tumblr media
Then she can put on the many layers of uchiki sugata over her madder-dyed hakama and kosode. The uchiki sugata is the most basic court garment, with at minimum five or six uchiki layered over each other; even in the height of summer, some ladies wore as many as twelve uchiki.

Finally, she’s ready to make her appearance at court!
