“You got to squeeze her… Don’t tease her… Never leave her… You got to try, na. na… na. na. na… Try a little tenderness!” - Otis Redding
Otis Redding one of the greatest recording stars in history. He wrote hits, such as “Try A Little Tenderness,” “These Arms Of Mines,” “I’ve been Loving You,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “(Sittin’ on) The Dock Of The Bay” and “Respect” (performed by Aretha Franklin).
Otis prowess as a businessman led him to form his own label, Jotis records, in 1965. In addition to his many business interests in fields related to music, he was engaged in other business interests in his native state such as real estate, investments, stocks, and bonds. His business acumen meant that Otis knew how to earn and invest his money.

Love at last I've found you, oh
And honey, won't you let me?
Just build my whole life around you?
And while how complete
How complete my whole life would be, yeah
If you would take things under consideration
And walk down this aisle with me
And I would love it, yeah
People, I say it's so early in the morning
Ooh, it's a quarter 'til three
We're sittin' here talkin'
Over cigarettes and drinking coffee, now, Lord
And I'll like to show you, well
I've known nothing, but good old joy
Since I met you, darling
Honey, since I've met you, baby, yeah
I would love to have another drink of coffee, now
And please, darling, help me smoke this one more cigarette, now
-Cigarettes and Coffee Otis Redding

Tonight’s random record shelf pull,,,
Otis Redding “The Dock Of The Bay” 1968
I don’t listen to my Otis albums as much as I should. Not because I don’t like them, they’re some of my favorite records ever, but probably because they’ve been so ingrained into my soul in the past that I don’t need to hear them. But when I do listen to them it puts me in a happy place.
The area I come from is not a place where I’d hear deep soul music casually while growing up so my love of all things Stax/Volt Records since I was a teenager is unexplained but Otis is definitely the artist who I gravitated to first.
This album should’ve been the opening to a new phase of his career but sadly it represents a bit of his past and points to unfulfilled potential. What was and what could’ve been. All these years later it’s still a damn shame.
