I discovered the "Planet of The Apes" series in college, and it had a profound effect on me. I vividly recall being down in the subway at Lincoln Center, and seeing a huge ad for The Big Apple Circus featuring an elephant, someone having scrawled the words ANIMAL SLAVERY in red graffiti across it. I stopped right in my tracks at the sight of it.
