#Ozai's A+ parenting
zuko-always-lies · 7 hours

Do people really think that Ozai would have cared about Zuko being violent and aggressive toward Azula? Or vice-versa? What about his parenting and worldview makes people think he would care about one of his children being a violent asshole toward the other? Especially since they're Fire Nation royalty, and Fire Nation royalty are supposed to be violent assholes. Better that Zuko try to light Azula on fire than he be a coward who refuses to fight.

From a Passion into a Weapon
Tumblr media
If one were to find how firebending got corrupted in the Fire Nation, how it was turned from one's identity into just another weapon, I'd start with Azula.
One of the core aspects of Azula's character is her firebending, and not just because it's blue and unique to her. To be more accurate, it's one of the few things that she's really passionate about that isn't initially related to Ozai and the Fire Nation as a whole. And we can see this whenever she trains. Like how in the demonstration for Fire Lord Azulon she's really into it. How she closes her eyes and lets the movements guide her and whatnot.
Tumblr media
We see this again when she practices lightning bending, something that Iroh claims you need a mind at peace in order to accomplish. Which is what we see: she's calm, she's focused, she's into it. She wouldn't be able to generate lightning if she were angry, enraged, or drawing from pure emotion like most other firebenders.
Azula doesn't just see her firebending as a weapon. For all her problems, it feels like firebending at least gives her a peace of mind. And it's probably one of the few things she more than likely enjoys just for the sake of it as well as using it offensively.
It's also where the problems start.
The Fire Nation during the war was HIGHLY militaristic. Essentially, everyone was expected to give their all for the war effort and their whole society was structured around violence and competition. Those who dominated were fit to lead, while those who weren't were sent to the meatgrinder. A lesson Azula more than likely learned when it was burned onto Zuko's face.
Suddenly, that passion for firebending wasn't just for the sake of firebending. In conditions like that, it could be the right tool to keep yourself on top. It's not like seeing firebending as nothing but a weapon was a concept alien to Azula: her father was Ozai after all, and he saw almost everything as a piece or tool. In fact, he was the one who called her a prodigy. So if that's the case, I think it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for Ozai to encourage Azula's competitiveness and turn her love for firebending into an obsession to win at all costs. How nothing less than victory was acceptable in his eyes.
And Azula DOES have an obsession with winning. She treated a game of volleyball like it was a military operation. That doesn't just come from nowhere, it would've been a perfect conditioning if you want a loyal and deadly servant.
The ultimate tragedy is that Azula's love for firebending was twisted into a need to win. Since in the Fire Nation, winning was the difference between getting on the Fire Lord's good side, or being thrown to the wolves.
And ultimately there's only so much time until you do inevitably get handed a loss.

On the topic of Azula, Ozai, and abuse.
One of the things I've noticed when it comes to how Azula's character is discussed in the fandom and by the writers themselves is that there is this popular belief that she wasn't abused by Ozai. Which I've always found to be bizarre since the show gives us evidence that she absolutely was abused by her father, just not in the way same way as Zuko.
In the show, Azula is seen as the golden child of the family for her excellent firebending skills. She is constantly propped up by Ozai as a way to put Zuko down. What a lot of people don't realize is that this is in fact abuse, and it's abusive to both Zuko AND Azula. Sure, Azula more than likely loved the praise she was getting, but that praise was disguised as abuse.
Tumblr media
(I'm sorry for using the comics but this one part is actually relevant to what I'm talking about here). When Ozai says this to Zuko right in front of Azula, we see this as verbal abuse. It's abuse towards Azula as well since she is the one Ozai is using constantly to put Zuko down with words. When you abuse one sibling in front of the other, you abuse both of them.
Azula is portrayed as being a perfectionist in the tv show. Some people see this as her being power hungry. When that actually couldn't be farther from the truth. Her perfectionist personality comes from abuse. Because she saw what happened to Zuko since he wasn't perfect and he was considered to be weak. He was burned by Ozai. Right in front of her. Which in it's own way was a warning to her. "This is what happens to failures, and those that are not perfect. You must be perfect at all times if you do not want what I just did to your brother to happen to you." That's what that told her. So when we see her perform lightning bending in the first episode of book 2, and this happens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her saying "almost isn't good enough" wasn't because she craves power to the point where a single hair out of place is something that she won't tolerate, it's because she knows that she HAS to be perfect at all times, otherwise she ends up like Zuko. Burned and exiled. And to her, Ozai was the one family member who seemed to care about her. And if she couldn't please him, then that meant that he wouldn't "love" her anymore. As evidenced by this scene here
Tumblr media
That is what we call conditional love. Which is another form of abuse. As long as your abuser finds you useful because they know that you will do whatever they tell you to do without question, they will give off the illusion that they actually do care about you and love you. But the minute they don't have anymore use for you? They toss you aside like yesterday's trash, as if you never meant anything to them at all. Which is what Ozai does to Azula on the day of the comet. That can fuck with a person's mind. Because when they see that the one person who they thought loved them actually didn't, that says to them that they were loved by no one all along.
So the point I'm trying to make here? Is that Azula was abused, just not physically and verbally like Zuko was. She was mentally and emotionally abused. Just because we don't see it happening on screen like we do with Zuko does not mean that the signs aren't there. Because they very clearly are. This is something that quite obviously the writers don't understand: just because you are the golden child, does not mean that you have it easy. The golden child can be abused too. Not just the child who is seen as a failure. There is more than one type of abuse.

Fic Ideas I'll write eventually; ICE ICE BABY PART 1
Modern Ice Hockey AU
In which Sokka and Zuko are on rival, semi famous pro hockey teams
They share a flight to one of their games together because Zuko has to rebook his flight without the rest of his team as he was called to see his father's lawyers and has just found out that Ozai (famous business mogul) is about to be arrested without name suppression for several severe counts of tax fraud and malpractice
Zuko unwittingly is put next to Sokka on the flight, is too delirious to recognise that he is literally surrounded by his rival team and doesn't recognise Sokka as he is relatively new to the starting line but gaining popularity amongst fans (insert note to research ice hockey lmao)
Sokka recognises Zuko because he's kind of a big deal both as Ozai's son and as a hockey player
Zuko falls asleep on Sokka and won't wake up, in revenge, Sokka hacks Zuko's phone (his password is 1234, like you're literally famous, get better self-preservation skills) queues rick roll 500 times on his spotify, takes a bunch of selfies and makes them Zuko's locksreen
Zuko is tech illiterate and wakes up to find the random guy he accidentally fell asleep on (humiliating) has changed his lock screen to a selfie of them and he has no idea how to change it back (even more humiliating) to its default setting
Random guy ends up being the best goalie he has gone up against in the league so far and the only thing that's keeping him from a full on meltdown because he's suddenly realised that his father's very public collapse is about to uncover a whole lot of trauma that Zuko is not ready to have shoved in his face by press oh god
In a moment of pure accidental genius, his post game interviewer catches a glimpse of his lock screen ("is... Is that Sokka Anawak pretending to lick your cheek?") and Zuko has an idea;
The scandal of his abusive past is juicy
But the scandal of two rival male ice hockey players secretly dating as they repeatedly face off against each other could be juicier
Zuko looks straight at the camera and says; "Sokka is my boyfriend and he licks my face all the time. Because we're together. Romantically. As boyfriends."
Nailed it
Somewhere in the locker rooms there's a very faint scream
Oh yeah, this modern sports au just turned into fake dating
Tbc...

I've been thinking about Azula recently and how she's had exactly two friends her entire life (maybe three if you count Zuko). It's possible she didn't even really pick Mai and Ty Lee, and that it was a sort of political arrangement between the parents to have the kids hang out and hopefully like each other, an arranged friendship similar in principle to an arranged marriage.
Outside of Azula, Mai has Ty Lee and Zuko, and Ty Lee has Mai, the circus, and possibly her sisters.
Outside of Mai and Ty Lee, Azula has no one.
She's only had a handful of peers her entire life, and all of them leave her. She didn't even think it was possible for them to leave. Her two closest (and only) friends betrayed her in quick succession, not only shaking her worldview, but leaving her entirely alone in the world. No friends, no family, no nothing. No wonder she had a breakdown.

To be fair, Iroh DOES lose his shit whenever Azula isn't being great of a sister to Zuko. He just doesn't do anything when the roles are switched. Yay?
Also, I can legit picture Ozai filming Azula beating the shit out of Zuko for his own amusement. For fuck's sake, if the Fire Nation had cameras, he would have demanded people filmed him disfiguring his son so he could re-live that moment when he felt like, and to no so subtly threaten people by showing it to them, like "Yeah, I did that shit to my own son. You think I'm gonna spare you?"

Zuko to Izumi: Now daughter, on your first day of school, I’d like to pass along the words of advice my father gave me.
Ozai to Zuko in a flashback: Zuko, you’re as dumb as a mule and twice as ugly. If a strange man offers you a ride, I say take it.
Zuko: Lousy traumatic childhood.

Ozai: ...Kiwi, is it?
Kiyi: It's Kiyi.

For anyone who believes that Azula had more agency and control over her actions to the point she could've objected to things like Zuko's banishment or the campaign to raze everything in the Earth Kingdom to ground...
Just remember what happened to the last family member who mouthed off to Ozai.
Suddenly a 14-year old raised under an abusive father's household doesn't really have much agency as she likes people to believe.

Ozai: Well, aren’t you all a rag-tag group of adventurers with unclear goals and good hearts! Oh, let me guess: you’re out to save the world! Katara: Well, actually, that sounds like a pretty fair assessment. Sokka: More or less, I guess... Aang: That sounds awesome! Let’s do that! Zuko: I’m new here, but I am open to the concept. Toph: I thought that’s what we were doing, guys, come on!

Sometimes, after Zuko and her mother left, Azula finds herself in the garden, staring at the turtle-ducks they adored so much. To be honest, she doesn’t quite see the appeal. They’re stupid and soft, like Zuzu. Maybe that’s why they were so fond of them. He was always Mother’s favorite. Idly, she considers burning them all. It’s to be expected of her.
A particularly bold duckling with a splotch over its eye nuzzles her foot.
She lets them be.
Once a week for not quite three months, the Fire Lord serves roasted turtle duck from the palace garden until they’re all gone, a reminder to his only remaining family member of the consequences of failure.
Azula hardens her heart, sharpens her smile, and digs in with gusto.

Do you think that Ozai had any love for his children right after Ursa's banishment? If so or not, why?
No, I don't think he had any love for his children at that point. The man already saw them as a way to gain favor with his father back when he was still alive. Once Ozai became the Fire Lord, I highly doubt that he had any parental love left to give. He only saw Zuko and Azula as a means to an end. Two weapons that he could use to further his desires. One weapon became too dull for him to use, so he tossed it aside in favor of the other weapon.
