X-Files OctoberFicFest Day 15: Hollow
This year, I'm using the October 2022 prompts from @artpromptcal.
TW: canon typical discussion of death/post-mortem
For an office job, it's surprising how much time they spend in the woods. She supposes that they mostly leave the bodies in dumpsters and abandoned buildings to municipal authorities, which is part of it. The mysterious corpses are all in the woods, decomposing under leaf litter and tangled in roots. She's learned to prefer the open air. It makes the flies more bearable. Predation is a fact of death - she knows that - but crows and foxes seem a more dignified option than rats.
There are less sinister reasons to venture into the forest, too: reports of strange creatures and lights that can't be explained. That's what they're chasing today.
"The Ozark Howler," Mulder explains again as they hike. "A wolf-sized creature with the muzzle of a dog and the shape of a cat, Scully. You might think that would be strange enough, but you'd be wrong."
Scully steps over a fallen branch. "Of course I would."
He grins. "In addition to those anomalies, it has red eyes and horns."
"Astonishing," she says, crunching through the leaves. There's a nip in the air that chills the tip of her nose. It's apple weather. Firepit weather. The mountains around them are red and orange and yellow, stippled with dark green pines. Sunlight sifts through the leaves when the wind sighs.
Scully doesn't believe any legendary creature would appear in the daylight - too easy to document, for starters - but a day like this is impossible to argue with. They deserve an easy case once in a while. Besides, something is killing chickens. She suspects a mountain lion or coyotes, but the reports are incongruous. There are bears in these woods too, somewhere. Any of those things would have the power to turn chickens into the smears of blood and feathers in the photographs in Mulder's files.
Mulder isn't finished. "The first reported sighting was in the 1800s by none other than Daniel Boone."
"I've heard of him."
"Reports differ on whether he was able to shoot one, but multiple sources have described seeing Howlers over the years, even up to present day."
"Mmhmm." Scully sips from her water bottle. "How did we get called in for chicken murder? That isn't a federal crime, or we'd be arresting Colonel Sanders."
"Someone from the local field office tipped me off to this one," Mulder said. "Chicken's big here. Anyway, this thing could be crossing state lines. The Ozarks Highlands span a four-state area."
"I see."
The trail in front of them crests the hill and descends into a hollow lined with a bonfire array of maples. At the bottom, a sturdy wooden bridge spans a chuckling creek whose progress down the slope is punctuated by tiny waterfalls. The trail is cut into stone steps just a bit too high for Scully's stride. Mulder wordlessly puts out a hand to steady her as she climbs down. His grip is warm and strong. She savors the moment.
They stop on the bridge. Scully pulls two apples out of her bag. Locally grown, the sign said. She and Mulder lean on the railing and eat the crisp fruit. It takes her a moment to realize that the woods are loud around them in a way that's so different from the city: birds and water and rustling leaves instead of traffic and people. Peace steals over her. There are bones in these woods, to be sure. These mountains are old, worn down nearly to hills. There are always bones in a place like this. But they're hunting a beast instead of a human murderer. It's old-fashioned, almost sweet. If these woods are haunted, it's by ghosts that belong here.
Scully unearths a bag of trail mix. She suspects that Mulder's hunger is greater than apple-sized. Mulder leans his shoulder gently against hers. She doesn't shift away. There's no one to see them here. They can exist in their most natural state: so close that the clouds of their breath mingle and their fingers brush as they reach for GORP.
"Imagine the Howler in a place like this," he says, and she can almost see it: a wild thing, crouching to lap from the stream, watchful red eyes and graceful horns and a tail that lashes.

Nixa, Missouri is the most populous area between the residential city of Springfield and the tourist hotspot of Branson, with a total of about 23k people. It's on one of a few plateaus between two small mountain ranges forming the US interior highlands, or Ozarks region. This is where the stereotype of the hillbilly was made. Small towns and the roads between them are carved out of the limestone and there is precious little signal outside of densely (relative) settled pockets.
A car is flagged on one of the provided routes for being too nice and Melchior is followed from about a quarter mile back, the tails switching out with neighbors a few times along the way. Once Violette starts getting radio updates on his location; she, her girlfriend, and her ghoul head over to the meeting spot just south of Nixa to wait.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Casts Peter Mullan as Red Jacob MacKenzie, Sara Vickers & 2 More
Kelli Boyle, TV Insider Apr 3, 2024
The Outlander spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has added four more actors to the clan. TV Insider can exclusively announce that Peter Mullan, Sara Vickers, Brian McCardie, and Jhon Lumsden have joined the cast of the Starz series, currently in production in Scotland, and they’ll bring to life characters fans have already heard of in the flagship series.
Tumblr media
Mullan will be playing Red Jacob MacKenzie, laird of Clan MacKenzie, father to Ellen (Harriet Slater), Dougal (Sam Retford), and Colum (Séamus McLean Ross), and maternal grandfather to Sam Heughan‘s Jamie Fraser.
Mullan, a veteran Scottish actor and filmmaker, can currently be seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and recently starred in the series The Northwater with Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell, as well as in Barry Jenkins’ critically acclaimed The Underground Railroad. He earned an Emmy nomination for Top of the Lake and has also been seen in Ozark, Westworld, Cursed, and Mum.
Tumblr media
Brian McCardie
McCardie will be playing Isaac Grant, laird of Clan Grant. And Lumsden will be playing Malcolm Grant, Isaac’s son and a potential suitor for Ellen.
McCardie has been seen in Outlander before, in a Season 1 cameo as Sir Marcus MacRannoch. He’s also known for Rob Boy, Line of Duty, Low Winter Sun, Snatch, and more.
Tumblr media
Jhon Lumsden
Lumsden is a relative newcomer, with roles in Karen Pirie, Blood, Sex & Royalty, and Pancake. He’ll next be seen in The Famous Five, coming out later this year.
Tumblr media
Sara Vickers
Vickers will be playing Davina Porter, a housekeeper in the Lovat household, mother to Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Jamie’s paternal grandmother. As previously announced, Brian’s father, Lord Lovat, will be played by Mary & George‘s Tony Curran.
Vickers is a stage and screen actor best known for her role as Joan Thursday in the Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavour from 2013-2023, as well as Sunshine on Leith and Shetland. Vickers played Ms. Crookshanks in Watchmen alongside Regina King and Jeremy Irons. She recently starred in Guilt.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood tells the love stories of Jamie (Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) parents. Slater and Roy play Jamie’s parents in the 1700s Scottish Highlands, with Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine as Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, in the 1900s England during World War I.

Hill towns are something of a rarity in America. North America's earliest settlements generally date back to the the 17th century, with early colonization occurring along the coast. By the time the interior hinterlands were being explored and settled, the value of having a high vantage point that could be easily defended was no longer of prime importance, rather arable land and level terrain well suited to commercial interests took priority. To the extent that the hill town persists as an urban pattern in the United States may be attributed to the cultural habits of Victorian America. The Victorian fondness for curvilinear streets and whimsical placemaking meant that hill terrain was something to be embraced rather than flattened and paved over.
It should seem logical then that the Victorian resort town of Eureka Springs, located in the steep hills of the Ozark Highlands, is one of the most noteworthy examples of the hill town pattern in all of America. Spring street serves as the primary center of visual interest in the town. Bordered by hotels and storefronts on either side, the street snakes its way up the hillside and makes for a great walking experience. A few cottages and stately homes can be seen higher up the hill and if one is really intrepid you can walk up to the Crescent Hotel, which stands at the top of the hill. Beautiful retaining walls and stone storefronts compliment the surrounding terrain well and give the impression of a town chiseled out of the hillside.
Eureka Springs is a testament to the long-term impact of exemplary urban design and placemaking, as the town retains a great deal of vitality in spite of losing its reputation as a health resort. People no longer come to enjoy the springs, rather they come to experiences the charming surroundings the town offers. I was only able to stay in the town for one day, but if the many commercial enterprises and art galleries are any indication, the town continues to enjoy a brisk tourist trade. I am glad I was able to visit since this has been on my radar for some time now. If one wishes to get away from the urban grind, but still enjoy a cohesive streetscape of colorful buildings and businesses, then Eureka Springs should shoot to the top of the list!

Arkansas International
Recently challenged by a Texan’s intrastate-international vacation, we knew that Arkansas could not be easily beaten. Starting just up the Arkansas River, practically in our backyard, we began our trip with the first stop in London, a city with as strong a tie to America as any, stronger than most. Only a half-an-hour or so up the road we arrived at Paris, where we enjoyed the tower of fame. Really, they have one. Barcelona was next on our itinerary. And who wouldn’t want to see the largest unfinished church in the world – the Sagrada Familia Church?
Tumblr media
The hard to see pins represent our travels.
Next is the coup de grass. (You’re in Arkansas, remember?) Venus, only 59.87 million miles from Barcelona. No wait. I got ahead of myself. Venus, Arkansas, is actually 111 miles from Barcelona, in Madison County. From Venus we head east to Melbourne, spelt the way the Brits wanted it spelt. From Melbourne where we arrived in time to enjoy Arkansas’ best Cave City watermelons, we turned south, believe it or not, to Denmark. South of Denmark is Warsaw. And south of Warsaw is Stuttgart. Arkansas is as rich with German flavor as Stuttgart is in ducks. (Look it up.) From Stuttgart we continue south to Moscow where we race through to Hamburg and then Berlin. (Recall what I said about Germany in Arkansas.) After Berlin we turn west to Venice. Don’t blink, and don’t look for any gondolas. Lisbon is next. Lisbon is famous for, among other things, Jeronimos Monastery. But I think Geronimo spelled his name differently, and prob’ly didn’t have a monastery named after him.
From Lisbon it’s on to Cairo after passing through El Dorado. Don’t ask why they named it The Golden, cause it ain’t. It’s more like the West’s first oil boom town. After Cairo it’s back northward to Bismarck. The Caddo Indians might could tell you something about Bismarck; ‘cause I can’t.
Tumblr media
Continuing north, we get to London’s cousin, Dublin. Dublin is only a stone’s skip across the river from London and our Crow Mountain home. In total, our international journey took us 1036 miles, after deducting the wrong turn miles and “recalculating” miles. We’re excited to remind you of the Cave City watermelons (followed closely in sweetness by those from Hope, Arkansas) and also wish to tell you about the pristine pleasures found in and on the Buffalo River, as well as the world-famous cold-water trout fishing on the White River.
Tumblr media
As hinted, Stuttgart has more duck hunting than just about anywhere. And we took you right past the only place anywhere that you can keep all the diamonds you can find – right on top of the ground. Cotton, rice, and timber are the money crops, though cattle folk might quibble about inclusion. And bass fishermen would be upset if they didn’t get a shout out. For us, give us the 165-mile Ozark Highlands Trail with the two thousand feet (approx.) elevation uppin’ and downin’, and the hundreds of waterfalls. And also, the Buffalo River Trail is a must for hikers.
Tumblr media
On a map, the route looks like Thor’s hammer – and is just about as much fun. (huh?)
Now, should you, for whatever reason, wish to replicate this Arkansas tour on a global scale instead of within the confines of Arkansas, one route, using a combination of transportation modes, would take you about 27,000 miles. (Efforts were made to attempt efficiency) For the sake of continuity, let’s begin, again, in London, the United Kingdom this time, shooting directly to Denmark. For convenience, we’ll say Copenhagen where flight connections are prob’ly better. From there we would fly to Hamburg, Germany. At Hamburg we rent a car (because that’s how we roll) driving 289 km (sorry) to Berlin, Germany. Then we drive south some more to Bismarck, another 634 km (sorry) circling around Nuremburg. South again 127 km (sorry) takes us to Stuttgart.
If you’ve managed to stay away from the beer steins (Don’t go in Oktober), then you can now head east to Warsaw, Poland of course. If you drive, it’s 1121 km (sorry) and a long drive. You might want to fly since the next leg is on to Moscow, Russia. Unless you have an itch to visit a Gulag, you might skip these 1260 km (sorry). Next after Moscow is a long flight (hopefully) to Melbourne, Australia. We sincerely hope you made it. From Melbourne it’s another long flight to Cairo, Egypt. The miles to the sights are not included in the official itinerary.
Venice, Italy is next. Since driving would take you 28 hours to drive the 2524 km (sorry), we’d fly. Now you can ride the gondola.
After driving 1239 km (sorry), assuming you rented another car, you arrive at Barcelona, Spain. Oops. This is where you get to see the big, unfinished church. West another 1250 km (sorry) west is Lisbon, Portugal. Remember the Monastery?
Paris, France is next – the real Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, and trading German beer for over-priced French wine (as if I would know anything about either one). That leg is 1735 km (sorry). We’d fly, ourselves. But then, great things have been said about the European rail systems.
And as in the Arkansas trip, Dublin, Ireland this time though, is the last city before returning to London. To Dublin is 1052 km (sorry). Again, better to fly, especially since there is no bridge from England to Ireland.  Dublin back to London is 361 miles (yay!), but only takes an hour to fly. The total trip was (after doing what Brits and Aussies call maths) 26,993 miles. Now, should you wish to add considerable time to the already exciting adventure, you can take off on a down-and-back trip (up-and-back, actually – What do we know, you might have to rocket off from the bottom of the globe) Anyway, you can take off from anywhere you would like – to Venus. (Moscow not recommended) That jaunt would add a mere 59.87 million miles, depending on the day of travel.
Debbie and I, we love Arkansas, leaving off having to learn the eight foreign languages, eleven if you consider what the British, Irish, and Aussies have done to English. Considering the Venusians – better take one of those Dummies or Idiots books along.
And, should we take a notion, we can repeat this project focusing on a 28 Arkansas towns Holy Land trip! After all, Jerusalem is just a spit an’ a holler up the road.
