huge thank you to @theodeckerofficial for this tag in my post because I simply could NOT stop thinking about it and had to write it DOWN
•••••
“H-Hello?”
“Hi! Uh, hello, am I speaking with Mrs. Uris?”
“Yes, this is she… Who’s this?”
Beverly sags with relief and takes a deep, shaky breath. “Yes, okay, hi, Mrs. Uris. My name is Beverly Marsh, I apologize for calling but I’m an old friend of your husband’s… I-Is…” She tries to keep her voice steady. “Is he there with you?”
There’s a pause on the other line. Then a small, quivering voice. “Oh. N-No… He passed.”
Beverly pinches her eyes shut, knowing Richie, Bill, Mike, Eddie and Ben were watching her taking in the information. Guess Stanley couldn’t cut it. Seemed like some kind of fucking joke.
“When did it happen?” She asks, feeling the answer crawl up from the depths of her memory to stand front and center. She already knows.
“Yesterday.” Mrs. Uris answers. “It… It was horrible—“ She sniffs. “—the way he died. H-His wrists… in the bathtu—“
“In the bathtub.” Beverly echoes, blood running cold.
“Right.” Mrs. Uris says. There’s more sniffling on her line and Beverly feels like she should hang up now. Yeah, she really should.
“We’re all really sorry, Patty.”
“Yes, thank you.”
Beverly goes to hang up the phone, but Patty’s voice rings through again. “Wait,” she says. “What did you need?”
“I’m sorry?”
“You called for a reason, right? Stanley… isn’t here but, c-can I help in any way?”
Beverly falls silent and stares at her friends, not knowing what to say. They all look just as helpless. “No, don’t worry, Mrs. Uris, it was… it was something regarding Stan and unfinished business in his hometown.” She decides. Short and simple. The truth, but not all of it. Just enough of it. “Again we’re sorry for calling. Goodnight, Mrs. Uris.”
“Wait—“ The call ends. Beverly pockets her phone and immediately fishes for a cigarette and a lighter. She needs to clear her head and take time to internalize all of it.
They all do. Patty included.
It’s not until the next morning where she rethinks this.
“Is that…?” Eddie peeks through the townhouse’s window, curtain in hand, and eyes on a blue Jeep parking across the street. A woman climbs out, backpack, duffel bag and suitcase at hand. She walks across towards the front yard and, soon enough, she stands at the door. A knock; Ben opens it for her.
“Beverly Marsh?” The woman huffs out. Bleached blonde hair among white streaks in a bob, tired green eyes hiding behind rectangular glasses and a wedding ring hanging from a chain around her neck. Ben gulps and makes way for her to walk through the door.
Beverly steps into the room, Mike and Richie with her and she stops upon seeing her. “Patty Uris?” She squeaks.
The woman breathes out a long sigh and sets her suitcase firm on the floor. “I found you. Finally.”
“Wait, this is Stan’s widow?” Richie points at her incredulously. “She’s here?! Why?!”
Beverly walks past him and grabs Patty by the hands. “Patty, what are you doing here— you shouldn’t have come, what were you thinking!”
Patty gently pries her hands away and grips at her duffel bag harder. “I’m here because you need Stanley. I…” She wipes a hand over her face, fatigue crystal clear in her body language. “I don’t know. We were always there for each other, he and I. And… if it’s business work, I can cover for him. I can help.”
The guys stiffen and don’t say a word. Bill fidgets in place and Eddie is looking away. Mike, Ben and Richie are simply trying to maintain their panic at bay.
Bev takes the wheel again. “That’s very kind of you, Pat, but this was a matter that only involves your husband. I-I— Well, I’m afraid you came all this way for nothing.”
“Nonsense.” Patty says. “You need Stan, so here I am. What do you need?”
Unsettling panic starts to settle on Beverly’s throat, disrupting the passage of words out. “Pat, no. Please go home. We’re okay.”
“No.”
“Uh…” Ben tries. “Bev is right, Mrs. Uris. We got this, there’s no need for more help—“
“You said it first.” Patty says and the room stills again. Beverly’s brows furrow.
“What?”
“I heard you over the phone. You knew my husband had passed in the bathtub before I told you.”
“Shit.” Beverly hears Richie mutter. It doesn’t help ease her nerves. “I... Patty, I can explain—!” She tries.
“No. No excuses, please,” Patty raises a hand. A deep, growing hurt shines evident in her frown. “I know this isn’t a… a normal business. Stanley wasn’t exactly normal either.” She clenches her eyes shut. “He had nightmares, that Stanley. Screamed and cried in his sleep. Said things like The turtle couldn’t help us, amongst other deeply unsettling things and then woke up the next morning remembering nothing of it. It scared me.”
None of the Losers speak. Patty takes her cue and continues.
“I always knew my husband had to be part of something bigger, something I never could comprehend or explain. It was a feeling, odd I know, but it was there.” She wets her lips. “So when I saw Stan answer the phone two days ago… a-and the bathtub… and now your phone call, Beverly Marsh, I knew it was all connected. The feeling was back and I knew whatever haunted Stanley in life had caught up to him.”
Patty lifts her hand to the ring on her chest. “I could never help Stanley with his nightmares in life. But I can help now. I don’t understand what is going on, but I am not leaving without setting things right in my heart. I’m not.” She firmly drops her duffel bag at her feet and gazes at the six adults before her. The tired green shifts into something more, a determined shine any of the Losers could remember seeing on Stanley Uris himself once upon a time. “So, I repeat myself: what do you need?”
And just like that, Stanley was back.

hi i luv your auston blurbs 💕 if you're still taking requests, maybe auston and amelia at a leafs party🥺
A.N. Hiii! so I got this requested twice and I might write another one for this request. I happened to write this for St. Patty's day and then never posted it so I thought I would put it out there. Hopefully, you like it! Also if you have any feedback or request always feel free to submit I love hearing from you guys! Word Count: 2,687
Masterlist “The party starts at 8. It’s a team party so there will be kids there,” Auston said as he tucked his wallet into his back pocket. I glanced at him through the mirror as I finished applying the final touches of my makeup.
“Is that what you're wearing?” I asked him with my eyebrow raised. He gave me an offended look before nodding his head gently.
“Yeah don't I look good?” he asked twirling in a circle before holding his hands out. Tada.
“I mean you're not wearing any green. Do you want me to pinch you all night?” I asked with a giggle before putting my lipgloss down and making my way over to the closet. As I observed what to wear I felt arms wrap around my waist. I leaned back into his strong chest while taking a moment to relax.
The last two weeks had been pretty stressful for me. Work was on my ass and had been trying really hard to get me to switch from writing about fashion to writing about sports. I knew that it was because they wanted the inside scoop on things going on with the teams but I refused to let them change my career because of who I was dating.
“You okay pretty girl?” Auston whispered into my ear. I let out a throaty chuckle before nodding my head against his shoulder. I had told Auston that they wanted me to switch and that I wanted to start looking for a new job. He had been extremely supportive but it had still been stressful.
“I don’t know what to wear. Usually, Macy makes me dress really sluty but I don’t want to do that with kids there,” I said honestly. It didn’t help that I didn’t have any green to wear.
“Wear my jersey,” Auston said, letting go of me to grab his Saint Pattys jersey and handing it out to me.
“What are you going to wear?” I asked again, as I took it from him and pulled it on over my sweatshirt. Auston walked over to his shirt and grabbed a green shirt to pull on in replace of his blue one.
“Better,” he asked grumpily. I gave him a big grin before pecking his cheek.
“Much,” I said walking out of the closet and out into the kitchen. I grabbed my heels and pulled them on.
“Can we stop by the bar before we go to your team party? I want to see Macy before,” I asked while checking to make sure Felix had some food. Auston nodded his head while grabbing his keys from the basket.
“Your driving?” I pulled him in for a hug. He wrapped his arms around me and squeezed me to him.
“Yeah I don’t mind,” he replied before letting me go. I pouted slightly while grabbing his keys from him.
“How about I drive,” I told him as we walked out of the apartment. I quickly locked the door before turning to face Auston. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me into his side.
“I love you babe,” he said as he led us to where his car was. Once we arrived he pulled the door open for me.
“Thank you. I love you too,” I said as I hopped in the car.
----
“Hey bitch,” Macy said as she pulled me into a hug and placed a kiss on my lips. I laughed as I pulled away from her and turned to greet her boyfriend.
“Hey, guys. How's it going?” I asked, pulling away and leaning back into Auston's arms.
“You will never believe what's gone down tonight,” Macy said as she pulled me away towards the bar. I followed after her sending a hopeless look to Auston, he laughed lightly before starting up a conversion with Ryan.
“Kayla is trying to get with Andy but Andy is like super not into her because he’s gay and he doesn't know how to get her to back off,” she said with a giggle while ordering two shots while I tried to stop her.
“Mace, I’m not drinking tonight,” I said once the shots were placed in front of us.
“Ugh! Is Auston?” she asked, turning around to wave the two over.
“Auston. Take this shot for your girlfriend,” she told him, handing it over. He grabbed it from her and together they took the shot. He grimaced as he set it down causing me to laugh loudly at his face.
“Where is Kayla?” I asked as someone slid into the barstool next to me.
“Looking for someone, baby?” the guy now sitting on the bar stool asked me. I flinched away from him and closer towards Auston who wrapped a protective arm around me.
“Kayla was dancing last I saw her,” Macy told me, choosing to ignore what the guy said. I nodded my head and looked over to the dance floor hoping I could catch her gaze. I wanted to say hi to her and then get out of here as fast as possible.
“Mace let’s go find her,” I grabbed her arm and pulled her out to the dance floor. After a few moments of searching, we found her in the corner talking to Andy.
“Leave the poor guy alone,” I called out to Kayla causing her to look up and a giant grin to come across her face.
“IRISH,” she yelled before attacking me and placing kisses all over my face. I laughed loudly as I tried to push her face away. It was somewhat of a tradition for all my friends to kiss me as much as they could on Saint Patty's day because I was Irish. I didn't understand their logic all the time.
“I’ve missed you so much and you look hot in this jersey mama,” she continued as she pulled away from me. I smiled back at her.
“I missed you too. It’s been way too long, it’s good to see you as well Andy,” I said as I pulled him into a hug. He smiled before pulling back.
“Where’s your hot piece of meat?” he asked looking around the bar. I grinned before turning to point over to him at the bar with Ryan. The two were taking another shot. I laughed lightly before getting into a light conversation with the three of them. About 20 minutes later Auston came over and wrapped an arm around me pulling me in closer.
“Ready to go?” he asked gently. I nodded my head and started saying my goodbyes.
----
“Auston, Amelia. Welcome,” Aryne said as she pulled the door open for us. I gave her a smile as we moved our way inside.
“Thanks,” I said as we took off our coats. Auston grabbed mine from me and hung them up in the closet before leading me into the kitchen to greet his teammates and grab a drink.
“Matty you're late,” Willy said, leaning his arm on my shoulder as he stared down at my boyfriend. I laughed lightly while I elbowed him off me.
“We went to say hi to some of my friends first,” I responded as I took my water from Auston.
“Yeah Will, we have friends,” Auston joked while he put his arm around me.
“I have friends,” Will scoffed, taking a sip of his drink. I giggled into my drink while taking in the scene around me. John Tavares was throwing a Saint Patty’s party at his house and almost everyone was here. In the corner, there was a group of kids running around while all the adults mingled.
“Amy!” I heard someone scream from behind me before I was attacked by Steph.
“Steph!” I shouted back pulling her into a hug.
“I’m so glad you're finally here,” she said as she pulled me away from Auston. I let out a soft sigh at being taken from him again before letting a huge grin back onto my face. She pulled me over to the other girlfriends and wifes and I found myself standing next to Aryne who was holding Jace.
“Hi Jace,” I smiled down at the baby. Aryne gave me a soft smile.
“Do you want to hold him?” she asked sweetly. I hesitated for a moment before nodding my head. Truthfully I had never really held a baby that wasn't my younger sibling and that was ages ago.
“Sure,” I held out my arms and waited for him to be handed over. He fussed a little once he was in my arms but calmed down almost immediately once I started rocking him. As I looked down at him I felt myself filling with happiness. It was like this beautiful baby was able to just help me forget how horrible and stressful the last two weeks were.
I smiled as I looked up and caught Auston’s eyes staring at me in the distance. My breath hitched. He was surrounded by a good amount of his teammates and he was ignoring them all in favor of staring at me. I gave him a small wave which he returned almost immediately before I turned my attention back to Jace who had started crying for his mother.
“I think he wants you,” I said with a chuckle she grinned before taking him back.
“I think you're right,” she laughed before walking away to take care of him.
“Where is Mitch? I didn’t see him when we got here,” I asked Steph leaning against the couch. She looked around for a moment before shrugging.
“He was talking to Mo but I don’t see them now. They may have gone into the kitchen for another drink,” she finally answered. I pushed myself off the couch and told her I was going to try to say hi. She hopped up and came with.
“Matts, you seriously forced her to come here in your jersey. Talk about possessive,” Mo teased Auston when I walked into the room. I shrunk in a little from all the attention that was now on me and made my way over to Auston. He was quick to slip his arm around my shoulder as I wrapped mine around his waist.
“She needed something green,” he shrugged innocently.
“Sure,” they all laughed. I turned my face towards Auston.
“Are you drinking?” I whispered to him. He looked at me happily before moving his face towards mine and then burying his face in my neck.
“I’m tipsy,” he mumbled. I laughed lightly before shoving his face away.
“Be careful there’s kids around,” I told him as I took in the few wild boys around us. His beautiful brown eyes lit up.
“I should play knee hockey with the kids,” he said, pulling away from me and making his way out of the kitchen. I quickly follow after him.
“Auston I’m not sure if you should play with the children,” I quietly suggested as I tried to grab his arm. He was quick though and moved his arm out of the way.
“Hey kiddos, knee hockey?” he asked as he bent down. The boys happily agreed and the girls quickly joined in starting a competitive game that involved a few more tipsy boys.
----
A few hours later I walked over to where Auston was talking to John. Auston had played with the kids for a while before going back to the kitchen with his teammates and they started a round of drinking games. I stood next to Auston as the two continued to talk. They both looked over at me when their conversion ended.
“Hey Amelia,” John said while Auston pulled me into his side. I gave John a polite smile.
“Hi. What are you boys up to?” I asked, leaning into his touch.
“Just talking about hockey,” Auston said before kissing my forehead.
“Are you ready to go?” he continued after he pulled his lips away.
“Whenever you're ready to go Aus,” I said softly. He gave me a grin before he pulled his arm away and turned back to John.
“I think we're going to head out man,” he said, pulling him into a bro hug. We quickly went around and said our goodbyes. Once we got outside Auston stumbled a bit on the step. I quickly moved forward and wrapped my arm around his waist.
“You okay babe,” I asked lightly. He laughed loudly wrapping his arm around me.
“Freddie challenged me to shots. I think I should have said no. They are definitely hitting me,” giggling I pull him over to the car and open the door for him. Once he's sat in the car I reach for his seat belt buckle.
“What are you doing?” he asked, confused.
“Helping you buckle,” I said in the most duh tone.
“Amelia, I’m a manly man I can buckle myself,” Auston said with a serious expression causing me to burst out into laughter. He tried to hold in his smile but it broke free.
“Aus babe you're my pretty princess tonight,” I told him as I continued to buckle him in. He tried to shove my hands away a few times before giving up and allowing me to secure him.
“Pretty pretty princess,” he repeated to me. I laughed lightly before bopping his nose with my finger.
“Yep that's you,” I grinned before shutting the door and making my way over to the driver's seat. After getting myself settled in the car I reached over for the aux cord only to find Auston’s phone already plugged in.
“We are not listening to any country shit,” Auston said loudly, causing me to whine. He clicked through his phone before settling on a Harry Styles song, causing a smile to light up my face.
“I like this song,” I sang to him.
“I know,” he said and then the two of us sang along to the song as I drove us home.
When we arrived at home I got out of the car with Auston following behind me. He reached out for my hand and pulled me back into him. I grunted as my chest hit his harshly. He also let out a little grunt before continuing to hug me to him.
“I missed you baby,” he mumbled as he held me tight, I tried to pull away but wasn't able to due to how strong he was.
“I was there the whole time Aus. Why don't we go inside?” I asked him as I tried to get him to move.
“Did you not miss me?” he asked sadly, letting go of me to cross his arms in front of his chest. A frown taking over his face. I grabbed his arm gently and started pulling him towards our apartment.
“I always miss you,” he said quietly, causing my heart to tighten. Once I pulled us both into the apartment I wrapped him up in a tight hug.
“I always miss you too,” I told him softly and then placed a kiss on his cheek. Felix came running to us and excitedly. As we knelt down to pet Felix Auston turned my face to him and gave me a deep kiss.
“I love you,” he said into the quiet room.
“I love you too. Now follow me,” I said, leading him to our room by his hand. I let go of his hand once we made it inside and made my way to the bathroom to take off my makeup.
“I had a really fun time tonight and it was so cute to see you playing with the kids,” I called out to Auston who was still in the bedroom. When I didn’t get an answer I walked back over to the door and found Auston asleep on top of the bed with his head pillowed on Felix. I let out a light chuckle before getting changed into some pajamas and making my way over to the bed. I pulled the blankets out from under him and wrapped the two of us up.
“Goodnight,” I whispered into the darkroom before cuddling up and letting the sleep take over.

Donny Hathaway
Tumblr media
Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945 – January 13, 1979) was an American jazz, blues, soul and gospel singer, songwriter, arranger and pianist. Hathaway signed with Atlantic Records in 1969 and with his first single for the Atco label, "The Ghetto", in early 1970, Rolling Stone magazine "marked him as a major new force in soul music." His enduring songs include "The Ghetto", "This Christmas", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Little Ghetto Boy", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", signature versions of "A Song for You" and "For All We Know", and "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You", two of many collaborations with Roberta Flack. "Where Is the Love" won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1973. At the height of his career Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was known to not take his prescribed medication regularly enough to properly control his symptoms. On January 13, 1979, Hathaway's body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in New York City; his death was ruled a suicide.
Early life
Hathaway, the son of Drusella Huntley, was born in Chicago but raised with his grandmother, Martha Pitts, also known as Martha Crumwell, in the Carr Square housing project of St. Louis. Hathaway began singing in a church choir with his grandmother, a professional gospel singer, at the age of three and studying piano. He graduated from Vashon High School in 1963. Hathaway then studied music on a fine arts scholarship at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he met close friend Roberta Flack. At Howard, he was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Hathaway formed a jazz trio with drummer Ric Powell while there but during 1967 left Howard just before completing a degree, after receiving job offers in the music business.
Career
Hathaway worked as songwriter, session musician and producer for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records in Chicago. He did the arrangements for hits by the Unifics ("Court of Love" and "The Beginning of My End") and took part in projects by the Staple Singers, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, the Impressions and Curtis Mayfield himself. After becoming a "house producer" at Curtom, he also started recording there. Hathaway recorded his first single under his own name in 1969, a duet with singer June Conquest called "I Thank You Baby". They also recorded the duet "Just Another Reason", released as the b-side. Former Cleveland Browns president Bill Futterer, who as a college student promoted Curtom in the southeast in 1968 and 1969, was befriended by Hathaway and has cited Hathaway's influence on his later projects.
That year, Hathaway signed to Atco Records, then a division of Atlantic Records, after being spotted for the label by producer/musician King Curtis at a trade convention. He released his first single of note, "The Ghetto, Pt. 1", which he co-wrote with former Howard roommate Leroy Hutson, who became a performer, writer and producer with Curtom. The track appeared the following year on his critically acclaimed debut LP, Everything Is Everything, which he co-produced with Ric Powell while also arranging all the cuts. His second LP, Donny Hathaway, consisted mostly of covers of contemporary pop, soul, and gospel songs. His third album Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway was an album of duets with former Howard University associate and label mate Roberta Flack that established him, especially on the pop charts. The album was both a critical and commercial success, including the Ralph MacDonald-penned track "Where Is The Love", which proved to be not only an R&B success, but also scored Top Five on the pop Hot 100. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA on September 5, 1972. The album also included a number of other covers, including versions of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend", "Baby I Love You", originally a hit for Aretha Franklin, and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling".
Perhaps Hathaway's most influential recording is his 1972 album, Live, which has been termed "one of the best live albums ever recorded" by Daryl Easlea of the BBC. The album can also be found on the British online music and culture magazine The Quietus' list of "40 Favourite Live Albums". It was recorded at two concerts: side one at The Troubadour in Hollywood, and side two at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.
Donny Hathaway is also known as the co-composer and performer of the Christmas standard, "This Christmas". The song, released in 1970, has become a holiday staple and is often used in movies, television and advertising. "This Christmas" has been covered by numerous artists across diverse musical genres, including The Whispers, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Alexander O'Neal, Christina Aguilera, Chicago, Harry Connick, Jr., Dru Hill, *NSYNC, Gloria Estefan, Boney James, The Cheetah Girls, Chris Brown, Anthony Arnett (First Baptist Bracktown Christmas Celebration), Patti LaBelle and Mary J Blige (A Mary Christmas, album 2013), Seal, and Train.
Hathaway followed this flurry of work with some contributions to soundtracks, along with his recording of the theme song to the TV series Maude. He also composed and conducted music for the 1972 soundtrack of the movie Come Back Charleston Blue. In the mid-1970s, he also produced albums for other artists including Cold Blood, where he expanded the musical range of lead singer Lydia Pense.
His final studio album, Extension of a Man came out in 1973 with two tracks, "Love Love Love" and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" reaching both the pop and R&B charts. However, it was probably best noted for his classic ballad, "Someday We'll All Be Free" and a six-minute symphonic-styled instrumental piece called "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry". He told UK music journalist David Nathan in 1973, "I always liked pretty music and I've always wanted to write it." Added the writer, "He declined to give one particular influence or inspiration but said that Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky were amongst whom he studied."
He returned to the charts in 1978 after again teaming up with Roberta Flack for a duet, "The Closer I Get to You" on her album, Blue Lights in the Basement. The song topped the R&B chart and just missed the number 1 spot on the Hot 100 (reaching #2). Atlantic then put out another solo single, "You Were Meant For Me" shortly before his sudden death.Liner notes for later releases of his final solo album explain: "Donny is no longer here, but the song "Someday We'll All Be Free" gathers momentum as part of his legacy... Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Edward Howard, lyricist of the song, adds, "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny, because Donny was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him. He's a good leader for young black men".
Personal life
FamilyHathaway met his wife, Eulaulah, at Howard University and they married in 1967. They had two daughters, Eulaulah Donyll (Lalah) and Kenya. Lalah has enjoyed a successful solo career, while Kenya is a session singer and one of the three backing vocalists on the hit TV program American Idol. Both daughters are graduates of the Berklee College of Music.Mental illnessDuring the best part of his career, Hathaway began to suffer from severe bouts of depression. It was found that he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was known to take strong medication daily to try to control the illness. However, Eulaulah Hathaway has said that her husband was frequently less than diligent about following his prescription regimen. Donnita Hathaway has said that her mother gave her similar information about her father, saying that when he took his medication, he was generally fine, but that when he did not, it was impossible for her to deal with him. Over the course of the 1970s, Hathaway's mental instability wreaked havoc on his life and required several hospitalizations. The effects of his depression and melancholia also drove a wedge in his and Flack's friendship; they did not reconcile for several years, and did not release additional music until the successful release of "The Closer I Get To You" in 1978. Flack and Hathaway then resumed studio recording to compose a second album of duets.
Death
Sessions for another album of duets were underway in 1979. On January 13 of that year, Hathaway began a recording session at which producers/musicians Eric Mercury and James Mtume were present. Mercury and Mtume each reported that although Hathaway's voice sounded good, he began behaving irrationally, seeming to be paranoid and delusional. According to Mtume, Hathaway said that "white people" were trying to kill him and had connected his brain to a machine, for the purpose of stealing his music and his sound. Given Hathaway's behavior, Mercury said that he decided the recording session could not continue, so he aborted it and all of the musicians went home.Hours later, Hathaway was found dead on the sidewalk below the window of his 15th-floor room in New York's Essex House hotel. It was reported that he had jumped from his balcony. The glass had been neatly removed from the window and there were no signs of struggle, leading investigators to rule that Hathaway's death was a suicide. However, his friends were mystified, considering that his career had just entered a resurgence. Flack was devastated and, spurred by his death, included the few duet tracks they had finished on her next album, Roberta Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway. According to Mercury, Hathaway's final recording, included on that album, was "You Are My Heaven", a song Mercury co-wrote with Stevie Wonder.Hathaway's funeral was conducted by the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Later in 1979, the Whispers recorded the tribute song, "Song for Donny", for their self-titled breakthrough album. The song reached #21 on the R&B chart.
Legacy and influence
Hathaway has been widely praised for his voice. Justin Timberlake calls him "the best singer of all time." Raúl Midón said that Hathaway is "the strongest soul singer that ever existed" and compares his vocal technique to a classical singer. "When Donny sings any song, he owns it," David Ritz quotes Stevie Wonder as having said. Amy Winehouse called Hathaway her favorite artist of all time. She mentioned him in her hit "Rehab” and covered several of his songs. Hathaway's work including Donny Hathaway Live, which featured noted R&B musicians Willie Weeks (bass), Fred White (drums), Mike Howard (guitar), Phil Upchurch (lead guitar side 1), Cornell Dupree (lead guitar side 2) and Earl DeRouen (percussion), has been cited as an influence by numerous other artists including John Legend, D'Angelo, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, Jon B., Chris Brown, Nas, Common, Beyoncé, George Benson, Victor Wooten, India.Arie, Jon Gibson, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Anthony Hamilton, Usher, John Mayer, Led Zeppelin, Freddie Jackson and Frank McComb. Hathaway's use of the Rhodes Piano on his early Atco R&B recordings has also influenced many neo soul artists & producers.A second live album called In Performance, released in 1980 following his death, also included tracks recorded at venues in Los Angeles and New York between 1971 and 1973, showing Hathaway to be a fine stage performer. Later, in 2004, selected tracks from these two albums were added to previously unreleased live recordings for These Songs for You, Live!.For Record Store Day 2014, Live at the Bitter End 1971 was released on 180g vinyl as a numbered, limited edition. This album marks the first time this 1971 performance at The Bitter End has been released on vinyl, previously appearing on the CD release of the 2013 career anthology, Never My Love. The 21-minute recording of "Everything is Everything" had never been released before on any format and was an exclusive track to this release.

Tributes
On soul group the Whispers' 1980 self-titled album, the group paid homage with "Song for Donny", written by fellow soul singer Carrie Lucas. The song was set to the melody of Hathaway's "This Christmas".
In 1999 Aaron Hall recorded a brief tribute version of "Someday We'll All Be Free" on the third album for his group Guy titled Guy III, with Teddy Riley and Damion Hall.
In September 2001, Alicia Keys performed "Someday We'll All Be Free" on the 9/11 televised tribute concert America: A Tribute to Heroes.
In 2005, neo-soul singer songwriter guitarist, Raul Midón (Blue Note) worked with Hathaway's longtime producer Arif Mardin (known for collaborations with the Bee Gees, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Norah Jones, and Aretha Franklin) and created a tribute song to Hathaway called "Sittin' in the Middle".
In her 2006 song "Rehab", Amy Winehouse sings of learning from "Mr. Hathaway" instead of going to rehab.
In 2007, Deniece Williams covered "Someday We'll All Be Free" for her Love, Niecy Style album. Williams later shared that she broke down in tears in the studio while recording.
In 2008, Ed Pavlic published Winners Have Yet to Be Announced (University of Georgia Press), poems re-imagining the life of Donny Hathaway.
The song "What a Catch, Donnie", from Fall Out Boy's fourth studio album, Folie à Deux (2008), is named for Hathaway and mentions Roberta Flack, his writing partner.
Bizzy Bone's song entitled "A Song for You", is a track that includes an interpolation of Donny Hathaways's original recording of the same name.
In the 2013 song "Classic", band MKTO references writing songs "like Hathaway".

Note
For the reddie fic request: hmmmm....What about...a/b/o reddie family fic where they have a little one named Georgie. (They named their kid in honour of Bill’s little brother, and even though Bill will deny it, he totally cried and became a stuttering mess. His wife Audra recorded it.) Bonus points if you can include : Benverly, and StanPat too. (Hope this request is okay.)
NOTE: As you can see I am obsessed with Friends. Thank you so much for this request. It was a lot of fun to write.
Holding one another’s hands, despite that Richie’s were sweating from how nervous he was, Eddie and Richie waited, encouraging Chloe who groaned as she pushed hard. The doctors kept giving her instructions, never letting her give up. This was the moment. This was the day. They were going to be the parents of this child.
Finally, a wail echoed in the room, and the doctors held a baby in their arms immediately wrapping it into a blanket. “It’s a girl!”
Losing the ability to speak, Eddie pressed a hand against his beating chest as the doctors cleaned her up. She was so small. “She’s so beautiful,” Richie’s voice broke unable to keep his emotions together any longer.
They couldn’t hold the baby yet, but Eddie bent down to the little girl. “Hi, there,” he said to her, his voice cracking. He felt Richie put a hand on his back. The baby was still trying to adjust to her new surroundings, hardly able to open her eyes. “I’m your Dad.” He pulled Richie closer to the scene who was still rendered speechless. “And this is your Daddy. We are going to love you so much!”
Hugging, the couple felt so lucky. “Chloe, thank you so much!” Richie put a hand on the young woman’s shoulder whose head flopped into her pillow. At first, when they met, Chloe was hesitant to give her baby to them. Somehow, Eddie’s name was smudged making it look like his name was Ellie. Eventually, Chloe came around, admiring their dynamic. “How do you feel?”
“Tired!” Chloe took a breath as sweat dripped off her face. “But, I am so happy for you guys! The baby is going to love you.”
“Well, you don’t have too much time to rest,” the doctor told her. “The other one will be along in a minute.”
Snapping their heads at the doctor, Eddie and Richie’s eyes were as wide as saucers. “Excuse me?” Eddie was the first to ask seeing how Richie’s jaw fell to the floor.
The doctor looked at them as if they were insane. Even Chloe was surprised, staring at her abdomen which was still swollen. “The next baby. It should be along in another minute. You know it’s twins, right?” The doctor asked them, raising an eyebrow.
“Are bug eyes and our mouths falling to floor look like the faces of two people in the know!” Richie exclaimed.
“Uh, you see, we only ordered one baby!” Oh, that felt so cruel to say. Then again, Eddie felt a different feeling that he never felt before.
Now the doctor was not sure what to do or make of the situation. Clearly, he needed to deliver the next baby. “I don’t understand, this has never happened before. We had that it was twins in the paperwork based off on your check-ups,” The doctor said to Chloe.
“Did you know that it was twins?” Richie asked Chloe who was still shocked at the news.
Chloe shook her head. “Well, during one check-up the doctor told me that both heartbeats were strong and I thought that meant mine was strong, too, which is good!” She took a beat to think. “Now that I think about it, twins actually run in my family.”
Richie made a ‘now you tell us’ face at her before feeling an arm pulling at him. Eddie took him to the side of the room so they could talk privately.
“What are we going to do?” Richie asked, tugging at his hair, anxiously.
“What do you mean?”
“Two babies, Eddie! TWO!” Richie indicated with his fingers.
Eddie relaxed a hand on his husband’s shaking shoulder. “I know. Richie, you’re panicking.”
“Why am I the only one who’s freaking out about this? We were only expecting one baby!”
“Richie, we can’t just split them up! That would be wrong. What if the other one doesn’t go to a happy home. Or they have to go to an orphanage. Or live its life on the streets. Do you want that?”
Nodding in agreement, Richie put a hand on Eddie’s shoulder, looking at him worriedly. “Eds, what if we’re not ready for two babies.”
Eddie touched his hand, looking into his husband’s eyes. “We have waited so long for this, Richie. I know you’re nervous, believe me, so am I. But, these are our children. I don’t care if it’s two, three or the entire cast of Full House that comes out of there!”
Richie wrinkled up his eyebrow. “You have really been watching too much TV.”
“Oh, shut up!” Eddie lightly whacked him. Growing serious again, they looked into each other’s eyes agreeing that this was for the best. Taking a deep breath, and giving one another a hug, they rejoined the scene where Chloe was just about ready to give birth to her second child.
“It looks like we’re just about ready,” the doctor examined. “Start pushing again, Chloe.”
Chloe screamed out in pain, howling, as she pushed. Tears streamed from her eyes. Eddie went over and placed a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. Following, Richie did the same until they heard another cry emitting through the room.
“Here he comes!” The doctor announced.
“He? It’s a boy?” Richie asked as the doctor nodded, holding the little baby in his arms. Turning to Eddie, the two shared a kiss. “Now we have one of each!”
“And that’s enough!” Eddie put his hand out, his eyes growing big.
“I thought you said...”
“Forget about what I said!”
                                                               ---
Unable to contain their excitement, the Losers waited for Richie and Eddie to return home. The moment Chloe felt that her babies were on the way, everyone was scrambling about, almost falling over chairs.
Stan feverishly inspected Eddie and Richie’s house. “Okay, they really need to have one of those baby gates on this side of the stairs!” He was only looking out for his friends. That was Stan. That’s what he did. Patty tried to calm him down, eventually getting him to sit down with the other Losers who were all sitting by the window, taking up the couch.
Mike placed a hand on Stan’s shoulder once he sat down. “Stan, it’s going to be okay.”
“I think Richie and Eddie have everything taken care of,” Bill said, holding Audra’s hand. Audra spent two hours talking with Eddie over the phone this week. Poor Eddie was so nervous wanting to make sure that they had all the supplies that were needed.
“They’re going to make great parents,” Ben added, smoothing Beverly’s shoulder. “Once their kid is old enough then Lexi will have a playmate.”
Beverly smiled, kissing his nose. “That would be great.”
Just then, the front door opened. Everyone turned to see Eddie walk in with their daughter wrapped in a pink blanket. Smiling big, they all wrapped around Eddie looking at the new baby.
“She’s so beautiful!” Patty said. Audra took out her phone to capture the moment on film.
“Hey, guys!” That was when Richie walked in, holding their son in his arms. Grinning widely, he could not wait for everyone’s reactions. Some of the Losers turned, greeting him. All at once, the best double-take in history happened! Everyone’s eyes went wide when they saw the second baby.
“Surprised?” Richie asked with the most gigantic smile.
Stan put a hand up, a lecture immediately coming to his mind. “Okay, just to clarify, the hospital knows that you took two babies home, right?”
Eddie laughed. “Yes! It turned out that Chloe was pregnant with two babies and she didn’t realize.”
“Wow! This is great!” Beverly congratulated them.
“What are their names?” Mike asked, holding the baby that Eddie had in his arms.
“Well, this one is a girl,” Eddie indicated. “So, we decided to name her Chloe.”
Ben was just trying to hide the tears, but he was breaking. “Aw, after Chloe herself? That is so sweet.”
“And, uh, this little guy,” Richie indicated to the baby that Bill was holding. “We decided to call him Georgie.”
Bill looked up at him, his eyes wide. Trembling, he tried to duck away so nobody would see the tears. “T-T-That’s beautiful! Thanks, y-you guys!”
“Oh, you made Bill emotional! Audra hollered still holding up her phone camera, capturing the moment. Even she had tears in her eyes.
Stan came up and put Eddie and Richie on the back. “You guys are going to make... really interesting parents.”
“Stan, can I just tell you how much I’ve always loved your honesty?” Richie commented giving his good friend a side hug.

Tor’s Masked Singer Review (Season 4, Week 1)
It was the first episode of Season 4 and you couldn’t mask for better talent. I haven’t blogged in awhile. It’s good to see I’ve still got it. This blog will only discuss my thoughts on the performances and my guesses on who they might be. I will not comment on the judges. Wait. I won’t comment on the judges unless I don’t have enough to say about the performance and need filler. And, Nick Cannon, well…it bothers me that he says he know who everyone is. His diamond shoes might bother me more than that though. Yes, diamond shoes and then, know-it-all-ness.
Tumblr media
Sun - “Cuz I Love You” - The costume is fire. (Nailed it.) With the yellow eyes, I’m getting “Most Fabulous Jawa” energy. The face looks upside down. Now that I’ve pointed it out, it can bother you too! The singing was very good. The verses were not as strong as the choruses. That’s nitpicky though. It may have been the country twang that came out in the rapping. In the verses, it sounded like Miley Cyrus which would fit the Disney thing and being a huge star when young. However, it did not sound like Miley on the chorus. Oh and Miley Cyrus is not doing the Masked Singer. That’s a Jenny McCarthy guess. (I didn’t make it very far.) I’m going to guess Leann Rimes. She has.a lot of gold records. She had a Disney Channel concert special. She has an album called “Sittin’ on Top of the World” which sounds like the goddamn sun. She has a song called “Can’t Fight the Moon Light” which the sun stops doing around dusk every day. The Frozen clue could be about her many Christmas Albums and the predominant color in the movie Frozen is blue, her first big hit. And her falsetto when she sang “you” in the chorus sounded an awful lot like her falsetto on the chorus of “Blue.”
And there’s this YouTube video of her singing “Cuz I Love You” on her tour bus last year and it sounds exactly the same.
youtube
Giraffe - “Let’s Get It Started” - The costume was a real stretch (So good.) He was dressed like a Zootopian Founding Father. I did not love the performance. Cassidy thought it sounded like someone from Hamilton. I was with her on potentially Anthony Ramos. The problem with that is the Giraffe was just behind the beat. The Hamilton cast would never be off. I truly have no idea about this one. I read online some people are guessing Fred Durst because of “$3” for the carnival ride and Limp Bizkit’s album was “Three Dollar Bill, Y’all.” Apparently, he feuded with Slipknot which would cover the “knots” clue. But it doesn’t fit the need for anonymity. I’m sure Fred Durst doesn’t have to do a lot of hiding. I’m going to go with Jake Paul. He got famous on Vine and you can “swing” from a vine. He’s supposedly funny so that’s the “Jokes” thing. I really have no idea so I’ll guess some Youtuber I know nothing about.
Popcorn - “What About Us” - The costume seemed thrown together. Like someone said, “Bucket. I don’t care what I look like.” (Losing steam.) She was a good singer. Pink is very hard to pull off and she did as well as one could ask. It sounded like a mature voice. They have at least one older diva every season. We’ve had Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick, and Chaka Khan. Most of the guesses online are Tina Turner but I don’t think it’s her. Part of me wants to guess Taraji P. Henson because they guessed her so much last year that it would be great for it to finally be right. But I’m going to go with Cyndi Lauper. She toured with “Meat Loaf.” She sings and endorses loving people for who they are. She has a thick accent that no voice changer could remove. Cyndi Lauper!
SPOILERS (IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED, STOP READING)
Dragon - “Mama Said Knock You Out” - The costume was fire. (Did I use that already?) It is a travesty that he went home before Giraffe. Giraffe was terrible. He is a pile of garbage that has no right to be on that stage. Busta Rhymes deserved to stay. My wife guessed this right away. I said DMX when he started rapping but then she said Busta Rhymes and it was undeniable. Did I mention Giraffe sucked? He should be tossed in a dumpster. Because he’s garbage. He will not win me over.
Snow Owls - “Say Something” - These costumes were distracting. I didn’t know HOO to look at. (I’m back, baby! Am I writing for Nick Cannon, yet?)  I’m just winging it at this point. The singing was beautiful to be honest. This song is done on every season of every singing competition show and, frankly, it should. The first thing that popped into my head was Derek Hough while the boy owl was singing. That would make girl owl Julianne Hough. They’ve been working solo for awhile so it fits the “family reunion” and when she said “Oh brother” in the clue package. And here they are singing this exact song:

----
SEPT 23rd, 2029
AM 3:21:53
You're sat on an old mustard couch, not knowing where to look. You can hear pestering beeps. High sounding with a low undertone. It's as if everything is moving in slow-motion before your eyes. You fiddle with your fingers, looking down as a scream fills your ears once again. You don't know if you can look. You don't know if you should look. You don't know if you want to look. A strained wail erupts from her throat; as well as your name. Your gaze rests upon her sweaty state. Hair sticking to her forehead and her skin glistening like a sparkling river.
"Y/N." she cries again, hastily beckoning you over.
Involuntarily, you're brought to your feet, and over at her side in seconds. Her frail, elegant hand quivers toward you. Immediately, you hold it to your heart.
"Don't be scared." she smiles weakly.
You nod, squeezing her hand. She whimpers once more letting her head fall back onto a tower of pillows.
"I need you to push once more, sweetheart."
The woman in front of you lets another wail pour out from between her swollen lips. The howl only grows louder and your head starts to swirl. For you, this is very overwhelming. Your heart quickens as you watch the lady arch in pain. A larger, warm hand covers both hers and yours. Your eyes move toward the owner. He smiles, sharing the anxiety.
He's happy...very scared, but happy.
One last set of agonizingly slow seconds stumble by, and finally, another soul is brought into the world.
"Oh darling, your hard work has paid off. You have a beautiful, healthy baby boy."
A kind, aged lady wears an expression you have never seen before. She's in awe of the sight before her. A younger woman in blue holds scissors in her hand. She bends over the infant and makes a precise snip. You lower your gaze, choosing not watch. Instead of letting your eyes witness the new life, you let your ears. He sure is loud. Very, very loud.
You look back to the couple before you. A smile dances across your lips as you admire the scene. Damp foreheads pressed together and their laughs are woven with exhaustion.
Her face lights up with joy as her boy is placed in her arms. Loving tears drown her stressed ones as she takes in the baby's presence. The husband's finger is adorned below four tiny fingers. They laugh in glee as they watch him suck in his lips.
You stand a foot away, quite awkwardly. They seem so happy and content. Full of love and power. A trio connected through blood and bones.
"I can't believe it. We did it." she whispers, gleaming up at him.
He nods, letting a tear fall down onto her shoulder. The woman flinches slightly, reality tapping on her front door. Then she looks at you with shiny, doe-eyes.
"I love you, Y/N. We love you."
"I know, Mum." you reply with a small smile.
"D'you wanna meet your baby brother?" your father grins, holding his hand out to you.
You hesitate for a moment, then take a step toward them. Placing your hand into his, he guides you to the child's head.
"Be very careful," he hums, "his head is very soft and sensitive."
Your hand barely even floats over his tiny hairs, amazed by the energy from this child. It's as if he holds a magic spell around him. A spell of wanting to protect and love him until earth's end. You blink as you're taken under this effect. Peace and serenity fluttering around the four of you. You just can't stop running your finger under his palm. His fingers, all there, beautifully curled and chubby. His lips cheeky and pouted. With lashes, very wet, and eyes shining brighter than sapphires. His skin is velvet, his sleeping state, a symbol of calm. He is magical.
"Cole." you finally hear, "his name is Cole."

    "Hey, you little shits!-"
"Hank! What did we say about langua-"
    "I have a present!"
"Daddy!"
A little boy no older than three comes pattering to the door. You're eighteen now, a fresh face from high school, getting ready for university. You smirk, watching your grey old man tackle Cole. Cole's grown nicely. Strong, brave, spry. He's a pain to play hide an' seek with... You stand to stretch your legs, leaving your beloved 'corner spot' on the couch.
"Hey, dad." you smile, giving him a shoulder hug.
He scrubs your head, shaking it back and forth like a dog.
"How's my little girl?"
"Not little."
"Hey! I have a surprise! Hon, you can stop washing the dishes. Get out here!" he waves his hands around, bouncing like a child.
"I wasn't washing the dishes. I'm not always doing stereotypical wife things." she smiles with a knowing look while wiping her hands with a small rag.
"Were you cooking dinner?" he teases, wiggling his brows.
You watch her send him a subtle finger while you suppress a snort. You all follow the man outside, three different emotions playing on your faces. Cole, on-the-brink-of-peeing-his-pants happy, you, thrououghly amused and anticipating the argument to come, and your mother, huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf.
There stands before you a ginormous Saint Bernard. With big saggy ears, excessively large paws, an even larger tongue, and the most happiest, puppy-eyes.
"Hank, I swear to god." your mother starts.
"Hey! Y'know how you always talk about saving the environment? I got him from a shelter!" he beams deffensively.
"That's...that's not-"
"You got a dog!" Cole chirps.
He runs up to the massive kanine, dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around its chest. The dog pants excitedly, letting its tail swing all around. It sits patiently; almost respectively. You can't help but grin. Of course Pop would buy a surprise dog. Cole had wanted one for ages. He insisted on getting a dog so bad, he proceeded to act like one for three days straight to prove 'how great it is to have a dog'. The act stopped once your dad told him to poop outside.
"Can we keep him?" Cole pleas, rubbing his face into the dog’s breast.
You watch your father laugh, loud and loving. "One step ahead of you, kid." he winks.
Your mom shakes her head in dismay, turning back into the house. The both of you watch her sulk away, trying not to chortle. Looking back at Cole, oblivious of the situation, he's just having a blast. He's on his back while the huge mongrel drops its head onto his stomach.
"So what's its name?" you ask.
A content silence falls over the both of you. Waiting for his reply, you watch your brother guffaw at this hound. Glancing over at your father, you recognize that look. The 'no worries, untroubled, satisfied' look to be exact.
"Sumo."

"This place looks bad."
"Come on, it tastes way better than it looks."
You clutch the boy's hand and bring it against the outside of your thigh. You stare at the menu, reading every meal like you haven't already memorized it. Two older men are just starting to order, giving Cole time to select his poison. Kidding, kidding...
"Whadd'ya want, bud?" you question, still not having taken your eyes off the boards.
You feel that all-too-familiar tapping against your thigh and the tugging at the hem of your shirt. You lean over, eyes still reading, and lazily listen to his words.
"Do they actually give you chicken feed?" he whispers secretively.
You explode with one obnoxious laugh and step forward, for the two fellows had walked away with their food. You approach the distastefully tall counter, waiting for someone to help you.
"Hullo, how can I help you?" a thin guy speaks. Seeming to be on his first job...
"Hello, can I please have two burgers, a large coke, and a cup of water?"
Once again, the tugging of persistence and plead drums on your side. You hear his quiet whining, but chose to admire some trees just beginning to grow back their leaves. The employee disappears within the truck giving Cole his chance to pout.
"I didn't want a burger...and why can't I have fizzy drinks?..." he mewls, pouting up at you.
"You know Mum, she doesn't want you full of sugar."
He puffs out another complain, aimlessly scuffing lines in gravel with his sneakers.
"Mum's changed..." he mumbles, keeping his head low and avoiding.
You swallow lightly, hoping the food will come before you have to reply. Luckily, the universe is on your side and it steams, posing deliciously on the ledge. You murmer a polite 'thank you', moving to a quaint picnic table close by. Cole reluctantly sits across you, still upset at having to eat a burger. You also clearly notice him ‘subtly’ eyeing your sweet beverage.
"Look, just take a bite, and then let me know how you feel." you encourage, hungrily pawing the serving in front of you.
Begrudgingly, the young boy lifts the dressed patty, studying it like an inspector. He grumbles one last time, and nibbles on the edge. Quite honestly, it looks like he could be miming. You internally roll your eyes and watch him closely. You grin as he fights the smile.
"Holy sh-"
"Woah, woah, woah. Holy cow, thank you very much." you turn back to your lunch, "And I told you. These burgers are so bad, they're good."
Of course, he's not quite sure what you mean, but doesn't hesitate to mow down. His mood has flipped and he's the brother you truly love. He munches happily, sauce decorating everything but his mouth, hands smeared with god know's what. He sips the water greedily, completely forgetting it's not jittering with carbon dioxide and sugar.
Minutes later, he's burying his face into napkins, resulting with an irritated hue of pink amoung his cheeks. You're only halfway through, wiping the corner of your lips for the fifth time. You notice Cole has entirely slurped his water to the very last drop. With a small move, you nudge your drink in front of him. His eyes go wide and he stares at you.
"I bought a large for a reason." you smirk, filling your mouth with lettuce coated with a variety of sauce and grease.
He buzzes merrily, sucking up the most content his lungs can bare. His teeth come to show, some crooked, some absent, but still shining with joy.
"How'd you find this place?" he chirps.
Your thoughts are swarmed with memories, "Dad." you reply, head somewhere far away.
Cole jumps with excitement and interest, urging you to continue.
"He used to bring me here all the time..before I left for university. Every Friday, no matter what kind of day; good or bad, we would eat here," you press your finger down onto the repolished wooden picnic table, "We would eat and talk until there seemed to be nothing wrong." you pause, losing focus and trailing off, "That everything was okay."
The energy clinging to your clothes, lifting the bubbles in your drink, fluttering past the wrappers of your food, had utterly changed. One might say it were sad. One might say peaceful. Whatever it be, you feel the weight on your shoulders increase. Just a realization that you're here in this moment. Experiencing these things. Living this life.
"Can we go home?"
You lift your eyes to his. Beautifully kind and innocent. He's so smart. He's a whiny bitch, but so smart. He's obersvant. He know's when something is wrong. He may not understand every little situation, but he sure finds a way to help. He is small. Frail looking. But strong in his mind. A strong motive.
A strong soul.
The corners of your mouth turn up politely and you nod.
"Yeah. We can go home."

Was it the call the made you heart drop? Or was it the sound of the name? The silent drive there? The terrifyingly calm ride up the elevator? When you walked in, and smelt urine and chemicals? Hearing the room number, that in, yes, this is real?
Or was it simply the thoughts running through your dizzy head?
How can one describe the feeling of it. The amount of anxiety and pain. The amount of fear. You hear horrible stories about this all the time. You never thought it would happen to you.
Will he live?
You had arrived late, your father with his head in his hands. You wonder if the same animal gnaws at his bones too. The ache you are trying to settle. Without any words, you sit beside him. Gently, your hand comes to his back.
"He's in surgery."
Thin, needle-like spiders creep over the nape of your neck. His voice sounds excruciating. Your throat siezes and you force a swallow. He still hasn't looked at you, but really, you don't mind. You keep your hand situated on his back, applying light pressure and slow circles. To be honest, you don't think you're doing it for him. The contact allows warmth and life, things you feel are slipping away from you.

PM 11:49:04
This waiting. This waiting stings almost as much as the nightmares creeping under your eyelids. Your dad is leant fully against the wall now. You have that in common, but his eyes, unlike yours, are wide open. His nightmares are the only thing he can see. He's off into his own torment. Falling without a landing.
Falling without a sense of falling.
Your arms are crossed against your chest and you try to keep your mind at rest. It's not working, but the battle distracts you from those agonizing visions.
Both of you have come to the point where footsteps pattering by don't rouse you anymore. There are a handful of others sitting by you, drowning in their own fears.
This waiting. Like leaves trickling off a dry tree's branches,                           you are losing hope.

There she stood. Before her anchor keeping her at bay. He had long gone, more than two weeks. But the waves had not hit her until now. For two weeks she had been sailing freely, slowly, surely, senselessly. The water had been too cold to think. She could only sail, further and further away from the shore.
This anchor, was like no other. Every once in a while, he would lift off the sand, and let her drift a little farther than usual. There, she could explore, learn, discover. And at the end of the day, he would gradually sink back down, bring her back home, and learn what she had learnt.
She didn't know this would be his final rise. It was night, dark out. She couldn't see. Couldn't see that she was unfastened from him. He was rising. Sleep was heavy on her eyes when she woke, she knew something was happening. He was rising. She called his name, but only the breeze replied. Rising, rising, rising... He rose past the surface. Broke the water, and kept rising. The metal chain connecting their hearts, splitting in two.
He rose, and never sunk down.
The two weeks, being held not by him, but by the ocean's currents were utterly devastating to say the least. Her whole body numb from the sea's solemn rhythm. She had drifted too far from all sense of returning. She cannot hear their converse, nor see their lighthouse. The horizon had eaten up the mountains surrounding the town. Sea to sky, the only recognition in her brain that she, is lost.

Your head pounds once you get through the door to your motel room your knuckles too. That was a long day...
While nearly falling asleep standing up, you peel off your clothes, letting them embellish the wooden floor in lumps of black, very dark grey, and darker black. Lights aren't negotiable at this time. They are off and will stay that way until late in the afternoon tomorrow.
Your bed looks so sexy right now. This motel may be a shit hole aged...but the owners made the most important thing beautiful and high quality. The bed. It's puffed and fluffed to the ulimate max. That amazingly cold, white, crinkly duvet holding its breath, just itching for you to dive in. If you insist, my love...
Ever so carefully, you fold back the corner of the comforter and sheet, both lustfully freezing and crisp. Mmmmmmm... That ‘hum’ was undoubtedly outside of your head.
After sloppily climbing under the covers every nerve in your body tingles. Mentally and physically, you try to remove yourself from all worries and troubles from today. You’re entirely exhausted. Every once in a while you hear people on the other sides of your room, making you curl up even more to muffle their nonsense. It’s very easy for you to get distracted when there are multiple conversations going on around you. You just can’t help but tune in.
In frustration, you flip all of the blankets right over your head, slipping into a world of your own. Every movement you make is amplified in sound so you slowly slide your feet back and forth. As if on cue, it starts to rain. Thank the lords... You smile in your little cave, feeling sleep pulling you under its arm. You’re sinking and sinking under the weight of it all when...you hear squeaking, and vigorous rattling?...
“Oh fuck yeah, Daddy! Uh huh, give it to me, baby!”
Oh for fuck’s sake.

One Night Out
This is a slightly AU TRR fanfic revolving around the night that MC met Liam, Drake, Maxwell, and Tariq. Characters and some dialogue have been borrowed from Pixelberry.
Pairing: MC (Riley Brooks) x Drake
Rating: NC17 / NSFW towards the end
Word count: 6,817
__________________________________________________________
Riley Brooks stared at her own reflection in the grungy, cracked bathroom mirror of the dive bar where she’d found herself working for the last two years. Her eyes were greeted with the image of the dark circles under her blue eyes, a half-hazard mess of brown hair that she’d flopped into a bun on top of her head, and what looked like a sliver of spinach from her salad at lunch that she’d hurriedly consumed between waiting tables.
She picked the food out of her teeth, splashed her face, and stood up a little straighter. Her shift was almost over, and damn if she couldn’t accomplish something if she set her mind to it. She had a date scheduled with her bed tonight that she didn’t want to delay any further by wallowing around in the bathroom.
Riley reentered the main room, narrowly avoiding a collision with Daniel, her work husband and main confidant, with whom she could always bitch about their boss over double margaritas.
“Shit! Sorry, Riley,” he quickly apologized. “I was actually just looking for you!”
“Looks like you found me! What’s up, Daniel?” Riley asked, intrigued by Daniel’s sudden sense of urgency and nervous mannerisms, watching as he shifted his weight from foot to foot.
“Actually, see, what I wanted was.... I kinda wanted to ask you... but I know you’re tired and you’ve worked a double as it is and....”
“Spit it out, Daniel. I think we know each other well enough at this point to be straight with one another? What’s up?” Riley questioned, becoming slightly more concerned with his erratic behavior.
“Well, a table of three just came in, and I really need to jet. I finally matched with that h-o-t hottie on Grindr, and our date is in -” he paused to study his watch, “ten minutes ago.”
“You mean the guy with abs you could grate cheese on?” Daniel reddened under Riley’s questioning. “Is it really a date if you met on Grindr?” Riley continued, before rolling her eyes and nudging him on the shoulder towards the direction of the staff exit.
“Go, man! Who am I to stop true love?”
Daniel responded with an eye roll of his own before an ear to ear smile overtook his whole face.
“Thank youuuuu! I won’t forget this!”
“Yea, yea. Don’t forget to send me a wedding invite!” Riley chirped, before heading over to attend to her late night guests who would probably, hopefully, be her final table of the evening.
“Hello, gentlemen. I’m Riley, and I’ll be serving you this evening. It looks like Daniel already brought out some waters for you, but what else can I get you all to drink? Or, if you’re ready to order food?” Riley paused, analyzing the motley crew that had assembled in the booth.
The first man on the inside of the far booth was extremely overdressed, in a fancy Italian suit that probably cost more than she’d brought home the past month. He certainly looked out of place, but also comfortable enough around the other two, which ruled out the possibility that he was a kidnap victim being held up in her bar by the others until the extortion money came through.
The second man, on the outside of the same booth, was still certainly overdressed, though he had a few buttons undone for a more a more casual appearance. He looked younger than the other man - maybe a little brother? No, the family resemblance wasn’t there.
Finally, Riley’s eyes rested on the last man, sitting alone on the opposite side of the table. He wore a casual, blue denim button down over a white t-shirt with black jeans. A Canadian tuxedo. Oh, well, everyone does formal wear in their own way, she supposed.
The second man suddenly spoke up, interrupting her inner evaluation of the three men.
“Steaks for the table!” he cheered with a smile.
“How about some filet mignon, medium rare and prepared with a bearnaise sauce?” the first man added. He spoke with a posh, preppy accent, enunciating each letter of every word as if everything he’d said was of the utmost importance.
“Er, well, filet mignon does sound good! Unfortunately, the closest thing we have to that in our fine establishment would be the deluxe burger. It’s two half pound patties covered with swiss cheese and loaded with tomato, onion, lettuce, and special sauce. And the whole thing is topped off with bacon! Who doesn’t love bacon?!” she spun the house dish with as much pizzazz as possible in an attempt to appease the men. She really hoped Daniel was enjoying his date, because these men were going to be a pain in her -”
“We’ll be fine with a bottle of whiskey... and four deluxe burgers,” the third man finally chimed in, saving her from any further attempts at having to up-sell the bar’s humble menu options.
“Excellent choice!” Riley chirped, quickly making her way to the kitchen to put in their order and gather their drinks before any complaints could be made.
Riley made her way back to the table with a tray of whiskeys. Alcohol would surely make the burgers go down a little easier for the two men who were clearly more accustomed to eating truffle mushrooms and caviar for dinner. Upon arrival, Riley realized that another diner had joined their party of three.
“Oh! Hello there. Looks like I’ll need to grab another tumbler for you gentlemen. I’m your server, Riley.”
She took a look at the newest addition to the table. He dressed similarly to the two men on the opposite side, yet he had a casual air about him like Mr. Denim Shirt, whom he’d seated himself beside.
“Hello, Riley. I’m Liam. These are my friends, Tariq, Maxwell, and Drake,” he motioned towards each one as he spoke their names in the same order she had scrutinized them in. “Sorry I was late. I hope I didn’t disturb your work flow.”
“Disturb my...?” she stumbled slightly in her response, taken slightly aback by his formal way of speaking. “Oh, no problem at all! The more the merrier! Nice to meet you Liam,” she smiled, “and the rest of you too.”
Ding. “That’ll be your burgers now! Let me just go get those for you.” Riley scurried off quickly towards to kitchen, evading Liam’s bright-eyed, awestruck gaze.
______________________________________________________________________
The rest of the evening went by quickly and relatively uneventfully, with Liam seeming to reign in the rest of the group’s behavior with a princely ease. The bar’s only other customer had been a single man who’d had two double shots, complained about his wife, and then had to bounce after receiving a decibel shattering, eardrum bursting phone call from aforementioned wife.
Riley wiped down the counters and removed her apron, ready to turn off the lights and lock up for the evening when she heard the front door chime, alerting her of a new customer entering the bar.
“I’m sorry, we’re cl-” she turned around, locking eyes once again with Liam.
“Oh, hey! Did you forget something. I was just closing up. I didn’t see a wallet or anything in your booth, but I can double ch -”
“No, no. Nothing like that! Thank you so much for being patient with us tonight. I know we probably overstayed our welcome,” Liam paused, but Riley remained silent, neither confirming nor denying that she’d very much wanted to go home and promptly hibernate for a week straight.
“Anyway, I just wanted to see if - well, I wanted to invite you to go out with us tonight. Maybe to another bar or club? We’re not from around here and you seemed to really mesh well with the other guys, which isn’t always easy to do, and so... I thought maybe we could repay you with a drink or two.”
Riley pondered his offer, wagering the pros and cons in her head. She really wasn’t interested in Liam, as nice as he had been. He just seemed so.... safe. Boring, really. As if reading her thoughts, Liam interrupted.
“Just as friends. No pressure or anything. Just a thank you. And as a way to celebrate the end of your shift?” he smiled friendly.
“Ah, hell. Why not. I’ve been working non-stop lately. It’d probably do me some good to go out in a social setting and see some people other than my coworkers for once,” Riley agreed, returning Liam’s kind smile. “Just let me go to my locker first. I keep a change of clothes here at work just in case. I’ll meet you out front!”
Riley mulled over her decision as she made her way over to her locker. Why had she told Liam yes? Sure, she had told him it was for socialization purposes, but if she were honest with herself, there was only one thing she wanted to socialize with - her bed. However, Drake was a close second. He had been mostly silent throughout their meal, simply sipping his whisky and digging into his burger with his sleeves pushed up around his elbows. It was what he hadn’t said that intrigued her. Every time she came by and spoke to their table, he had watched her with interest as if he were studying her - like he could read her inner thoughts if he merely looked hard enough. She could tell he was most certainly the strong but silent type. How did he fit into this group of outspoken, fancily dressed men? Who was he to them? She had to find out.
Riley changed into an emerald green dress that smelled slightly of stale french fries, but hey, that’s what she got for storing it in her work locker. In fact, smelling like french fries could be a bonus for some people.
She stepped back to examine herself in the mirror. She still looked banging if she said so herself, the fabric clinging to every curve of her corn-fed figure. It didn’t matter how much running around she did at the bar. Her mother had always told her that she had “baby making hips.” Finally, she slipped out of her work shoes, trading them in for a pair of low, black heels.
Finally, she turned the lights off, locking the door and slamming it shut behind her. She walked around to the front of the building, where a black stretch limousine was parked. Wow, these boys are even more bougee than I thought. She crossed the street quickly, making sure to press down her skirt as a gust of wind hit her out of nowhere, threatening to give the boys a free peep show. The window rolled down slightly, allowing Liam to peek out at her.
“Hey, Riley! Please come in. I hope you don’t mind the limo?” Riley stepped into the limo, trying to refrain the eye roll that was threatening to make itself evident on her face.
“Mind? Oh, no. I don’t mind. I haven’t been in a limo since senior prom, but uh, your average Thursday night seems like a perfect occasion for riding in one.”
“Heh,” Drake chuckled, barely audible from where she was seated. Liam looked up at him with a slightly shocked look, glancing back and forth between the two of them as if they were sharing some inside joke that he couldn’t understand.
“So, waitress, where are we headed?” the young one, Maxwell, piped up.
“It’s Riley, and are you even old enough to drink, Maxwell?”
That remark got the entire group laughing, Max’s face turning redder by the moment.
“I’ll have you know that I’m 23,” he protested, “I just happen to have a baby face.”
Riley chuckled in response, letting Maxwell off the hook from any further ribbing.
“Oh, well that makes two of us! Let’s run down to the corner store for some booze, and I’ll take you guys to my secret spot.”
"Surely you don’t expect me to frequent such an establishment?” Tariq barked, suddenly inserting himself in the conversation.
“Of course she doesn’t, Tariq. She’s much too smart for that,” Drake interjected, suddenly coming to her defense. “I’ll go in with you Riley,” he continued, “if you want, I mean. There’s no need to bring the whole parade into the store.”
“Sure, Drake,” she agreed, surprised that he had offered. The limo rolled to a stop and they hauled their way out and into the shop to get the goods for an evening of adult fun.
____________________________________________
The limo driver pulled up and parked beside of the beach lot. Riley sat up front with the driver to give directions of course, making herself useful. After all, she would be more help up there than in the back, with Liam making goo-goo eyes all over her.
Meanwhile Drake put bags of ice in the cooler, filling it with their drinks so they would keep cool for the duration of their evening at the beach.
Drake didn’t know how the others would be manage that evening, but he loved the beach. He loved the woods. He loved the mountains. He loved being outdoors in general and being one with nature in any capacity. Drake didn’t have to pretend to be somebody else when it was just him and nature.
Drake dragged the cooler out onto the sand, leaving it behind to start gathering sticks for a fire. A small fire pit was already set up from previous party-goers - he just needed to gather some kindling. He figured it would also give Liam a chance to chat up Riley.
Drake saw how Liam had looked at her. As royalty, Liam had always gotten exactly what he wanted and more. Everything had always been given to him before he even had the chance ask for it. Personally, Drake could tell that Riley was too humble for a guy like Liam. She would never be wowed by the limo, or any of his other symbols of lavish overindulgence. But, Drake could also tell that Liam wanted her, so he left it alone.
The boys threw back drink after drink, continuing the party that they’d started at the bar. By the time Drake came back and got the fire going strong, Liam and the others were talking out of their ass with Riley. She seemed to take it all in stride, laughing and taking slow sips of her beer, making eye contact with Drake above the roaring flames of the fire.
The fire seemed to dance in her eyes, warming Drake from the inside out way more than the flames did themselves. He shook his head, knocking those thoughts loose from his mind. The group would be leaving soon to go back to Cordonia, and he would never see her again. There was no sense in entertaining the desire that was bubbling under the surface for this beautiful, young waitress who had no idea who they any of them were.
Liam continued telling stories, more-so to hear himself speak than for any other reason. Maxwell and Tariq had already broken off into their own conversation, and Riley had tuned Liam out ages ago, merely offering the occasional, “mmmhmm,” or, “oh, really?” to keep the charade that she was listening going along. She hadn’t taken her eyes off of Drake all night, since they’d arrived at the beach. She knew he felt it too. When they’d locked eyes before, she swore she saw a blush reach his cheeks, right before he quickly looked away and brushed his jeans off, pretending that a grain of sand needed addressing right away, requiring his full attention for the task.
It took a few more “mmhmms” from Riley without a response from Liam before she realized that he had exhausted himself. He laid back on a piece of driftwood, his mouth slightly agape as he snored lightly. Riley chucked, looking around to see how the rest of the group was getting along. Maxwell and Tariq were over 100 yards away, entertaining themselves on the pier with a game of ad-libs. Well, Maxwell was ad-libbling. Tariq seemed like he was just confused, and more than ready to return to whatever ritzy hotel they were staying at to enjoy the mint on his pillow that awaited him.
Looking out across the fire, Riley admired Drake’s rugged handsomeness. His shaggy, wavy brown hair. His dark brown eyes with a story to tell behind them. His slightly crooked nose. The smattering of two-day-old stubble along his jaw. He looked up with a smile, as if he knew that Riley had been studying him. She blushed, quickly rising from her seat as he did the same. She walked a few paces over to where he sat.
“I want to dip my toes in the water. Will you join me?” she requested.
“Are you nuts? That water is going to be freezing, Brooks.”
“Brooks? How did you-”
“Your name tag at the bar. First and last name. Kind of encourages people to stalk you, ya know. You should rethink the idea,” he jested, given Riley a lopsided grin to distract her from any potential thoughts of stalkers.
“How very observant of you, Drake. I think this is the most you’ve said to me all night.”
“Must be the whiskey,” he responded. He’d only had one shot at the bar, and two beers at the beach, but Riley didn’t need to know that he just wanted to talk to her. Liam passing out had been the perfect “in” for him.
Riley gave him a knowing look, but she didn’t push the issue. She kicked off her shoes and headed towards the water, glancing over her shoulder at Drake. “Are you coming?”
Her question floated towards him like a whisper in the ocean breeze, and he felt himself being pulled towards her as if he were powerless to deny her request.
“Shit,” he mumbled to himself, kicking off his own shoes and socks, feeling the sand between his toes. The sand was warm, and he loved being barefoot as much as possible, so he figured this plan wasn’t so bad. He joined Riley a few feet from the tide, where the sand was starting to get wetter, but not quite stepping into the water just yet.
Riley reached out to grab his hand, shocking him and distracting his inner battle with himself about how cold the water was about to be.
“Let’s do it together. I’ll count down from three, and we’ll step into the water at the same time, okay?” Riley announced, and Drake nodded absentmindedly.
“3, 2, 1....” Riley stepped forward, pulling Drake into the water along with her, causing the bottom of his pants to get wet.
“Shit!” Riley yelled, high stepping back out of the water with Drake before releasing his hand. “You were right, that was cold as hell!”
“Heh, actually I think hell is supposed to be hot?” he smirked at her, lifting an arm to run his hand through his hair - a nervous habit. The truth was, he hadn’t felt the chill of the water. All he could feel was her hand in his.
They stood together, collecting themselves silently. Riley watched him with renewed interest, his profile lit up by the light of the moon. She reached out without thinking, lightly pressing the side of his nose and drawing a short line.
“Your nose is crooked,” she noted. “What happened?”
“Ah, it was a long time ago. You don’t want to hear about that,” he waved his hand, trying to dismiss her line of questioning. He didn’t like to talk about himself, and the last thing he wanted was for Riley to pity him.
“Please tell me,” she continued. He looked at her, unable to deny the request in her pleading eyes. She seemed genuinely interested in what he had to say. Genuinely interested in him. It had been a long time since someone had shown him such interest.
“I -” he hesitated, looking out over his shoulder to Liam, who was still dozing out of earshot. “Liam. He punched me and broke my nose when we were teenagers.”
“What?!” she squeaked, shocked by his admission. “What a dick. What happened? Why are you still friends with him? What the fuck?!” an onslaught of questions barreled out of her, causing him to chuckle, regardless of the topic at hand. He touched her arm, quieting her.
“It was a long time ago. I’m over it now.”
She quieted, urging him to continue elaborating.
“A girl he liked.... liked me instead. Liam is used to getting what he wants and he didn’t take “us” very well. So he punched me.”
Riley’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head. “So what if he didn’t like it. I don’t like onions, but I’m not going to punch you in the nose if you eat them around me.”
Drake gave Riley a soft smile in return that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“I don’t think those are the same thing, but I appreciate it. Like I said, I’m over it now.”
“I just don’t get it,” Riley continued, “Liam seems like such a nice guy. A little into himself, but fine enough. Why did he think that the girl he liked not liking him back warranted a punch in the nose?”
Deciding that it was time to tell Riley the full truth, Drake sighed before admitting, “Well, because Liam is a royal. He’s the prince of a small country in Europe called Cordonia. He’s used to getting everything he wants, even if he doesn’t necessarily deserve it or need it.”
“Yea, you’re funny, and I’m the Queen of England,” Riley rolled off sarcastically, rolling her eyes as she paced along the beach with Drake. When his expression didn’t change, she stopped. “Wait - you’re serious?”
“As a heart attack. The only reason I’m still part of his inner circle is because Liam and I have been friends since we were kids. My father served his father, and he died in the line of duty. Liam’s family took in me and my sister when my mother abandoned us and we had nowhere else to go,” Drake hesitated, realizing that he might be oversharing a bit too much with this woman who he barely knew anything about. He rarely met someone who didn’t know who he was, and he rarely talked about his feelings with the people who did know him, so it all just kind of came out with Riley.
“Sorry, to lay all that on you. But yea, that’s why he is the way he is, and that’s why my nose is crooked,” he finished, walking back to douse the remaining embers of the fire before Riley could stop him. This hiss of the dying flame was enough to jolt Liam out of his slumber.
Maxwell and Tariq rejoined the group, each holding onto one of Liam’s arms as he struggled to stay upright.
“Poor Liam doesn’t get out of the palace much to let loose. He can’t really handle his liquor very well,” Maxwell joked, smiling at Riley.
“Maxwell! Liam wanted us to remain undercover, remember. Now Riley knows he’s a royal!” Tariq scolded.
“Don’t worry about it, Max,” he interrupted Maxwell’s quickly escalating panic, letting him off the hook. “I already told her.”
“I don’t know why he keeps you around. The whole lot of you. You can’t do the one thing he asked,” Tariq sneered as he stomped off with Liam in tow, depositing him into the back of the limo with Maxwell.
“Ignore him,” Drake said to Riley. “Can we give you a ride home?”
“Oh, no. That won’t be necessary. I just live a few blocks from here.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. It’s late. I’ll walk you. I can take a cab back to the hotel from there or something.”
Riley started to protest, but he was already ducking his head down into the limo to tell the guys to go on without him, and that he would get his own ride back.
The limo drove off and Drake started to make his way down the sidewalk. Riley scurried in her heels to keep pace, admonishing him once she arrived beside him.
“I didn’t even tell you which way it was!”
Drake gave her a sideways smirk and asked, “Well, which way is your place?”
Begrudgingly, she admitted that they were headed in the right direction. “It just so happens that it’s this way. You got lucky.”
Drake chuckled in response, but he didn’t push her any further.
A few more steps into their walk, he realized that their time together was quickly coming to an end. He had to get her talking. To get the most out of their time together.
“So, tell me about you. What’s your story? Did you always want to work at a bar?” he seriously doubted it, but he wanted to find out more about her.
She laughed sadly, shaking her head no. “Is that anyone’s dream job?” she glanced his way before continuing. “No, I was in college for political science. My parents didn’t have a lot of money, but they supported me financially through school. They both worked two jobs to makes ends meet,” Riley paused, growing a little quieter. “The summer after my third year, they were in a train accident. The train derailed and they,” she sniffled, a tear streaming down her cheek, “they died.”
“I’m so sorry, Riley. I shouldn’t have asked. It’s none of my business,” Drake apologized, feeling like an asshole for ruining their fun night by bringing up sad topics.
“No,” she wiped her cheek, gathering herself. “It’s okay, Drake,” she smiled softly at him. “I know that you know how it feels to lose a parent.” She grabbed his hand and squeezed it, not letting go.
“So, no, to answer your question, I did not want to be a waitress or a bartender for the rest of my life, but I had to quit uni to support myself after they passed. I haven’t found my way back yet,” she finished, stopping in front of a brown brick building. “Well, this is my building,” she pulled Drake into her arms, breathing in the scent of him, a mix of crisp pine and campfire smoke.
He stalled, taken slightly aback at first, before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a the safe cocoon of his arms. He burrowed his nose in her hair, soaking in as much of the moment as he could before he knew he’d have to leave her. He released her reluctantly, taking a step back. “It was great meeting you, Brooks.”
Riley took the few steps that led up to the door, pausing with her keys in her hand. She couldn’t let him go yet, and before she could stop herself, she looked over her shoulder at him and uttered, “Would you like to come up?”
She wasn’t the type for one night stands. She’d only had two long term boyfriends, and she knew that she’d probably never see him again, but she felt magnetically drawn to this man. Before she could withdrawn her offer, he took a few steps up to meet her, pressed his hand to her lower back, and nodded subtly in agreement.
She gulped, her heart racing as she inserted her key into the door and turned the knob. What the hell was she doing? Riley, you’re getting ahead of yourself. Maybe he just wants to come up for coffee. You’re being an idiot. She glanced up again at him, and he smirked at her. She gulped. This man does not want coffee. He wants...
Before she could overthink the situation any more, they were already in front of her apartment door.
Cognizant of her nervous energy, Drake stalled, turning Riley to look him in the eye.
“We don’t have to do anything, Brooks. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you, but I can tell you’re nervous,” he smiled sympathetically. “I don’t want to do anything to make you uncomfortable.”
His gentlemanly admission calmed her nerves, and renewed the fire in her loins. She studied him with renewed vigor. Tall, broad shoulders, muscular, rugged, handsome... and hers for at least the next hour. She unlocked her apartment and moved aside to let him in behind her.
He looked around for moment, taking in their surroundings. Humble, but cozy, Organized, but adorned with sentimental tchotchkes here and there. A small sofa, easily convertible into a full size bed, making the most of the studio space.
Riley wrung her hands, watching him as he took in their surroundings, finally settling on her face. “I like your place. It’s very you.”
“Simple and unassuming?” she quipped.
“Cute,” he responded, leaning in to kiss her softly.

Riley darted off to the kitchen, pouring drinks for the both of them. She was nervous. She wanted Drake, but she’d also never been in a position where the future was so cloudy. She liked to research things, weigh pros and cons, and make well thought out decisions. She wasn’t used to thinking with her vag.
They took their drinks into the living room, which also happened to be her bedroom. Riley turned on the TV, and she settled on watching MasterChef.
“Is this okay?” Riley asked. She hadn’t really asked Drake what he wanted to watch. She had just picked a program that she wanted to catch up on.
“Oh yea, I love cooking,” Drake responded, smiling at Riley in response.
They sat together on the couch, drinking and watching the show in mostly silence. They gradually started to get more comfortable, with Drake sitting up while Riley laid back along the couch with her legs across his lap. Absentmindedly, Drake began to rub slow circles along the inside of her ankle, his hand drifting up her calf throughout the episode. While innocent enough, it was enough to wake up Riley’s senses and distract her entirely from the show.
Two can play at this game. Riley matched the pace of his hand’s ascension. As his hand rose up her leg, she gripped the side of her dress and lifted it, keeping pace with his hand, slowly revealing more and more of her thigh, until the side of her underwear was peaking out.
“Do you see this idiot? Can’t cook to save his fuc -” Drake finally glanced in her direction, noticing the predicament that they were in. “Fuck,” he finished.
Drake reared back, simultaneously losing all interest in the show and repositioning his body to lay over Riley’s, positioning a leg between hers. He kissed her, leaving a soft trail of kisses along her jar and up to her ear.
“That dish looked fucking disgusting, I think I have something better to eat right...” his hand traveled the remaining distance to the apex of her thighs, “here.”
Riley shuddered under his hand, feeling as he grew hard against the exposed skin of her thigh.
“Is this okay?” Drake whispered, moving his arms to either side of her, hovering above her body before continuing his movements.
“Yes,” Riley responded, nodding her head urgently and wrapping her hands around one of Drake’s to relocate it, moving it back to her crotch.
He growled with hunger, leaning over her body to suck the soft flesh of her neck, working across her collarbone as he rubbed her softly through her underwear. He wrapped one arm under her back, pulling her into an upright position.
She was confused, but only for a moment, quickly coming up to speed as he slipped his hand under her dress, alongside her thigh. She raised her arms, allowing him to pull the dress up her body and over her head.
Riley pushed herself up further, now on her knees. “You’re not nearly naked enough,” she admonished Drake, pushing him down to lay on the couch as she straddled his thighs. She slowly unbuttoned his shirt, opening it to reveal the thin white tee beneath. She pulled the shirt out from the waistband of his pants, raising the fabric to reveal his hard abs and a smattering of hair.
Drake wrapped his arms around her, picking her up as he stood from the couch, depositing her safely to the ground to pull out the bed before things progressed any further. Tinkering around until he was finally satisfied with his efforts, he picked her up again and threw her on the newly constructed bed. She laughed momentarily at his caveman antics, but quickly quieted once he took off his button down and pulled his t-shirt over his head, leaving him half naked. No wonder her could throw her around like she was a pillow. This man was solid as a rock. She’d have to ask him later how he stayed so fit.
Drake leaned over her to unhook her bra, pausing to suck each nipple and kiss each breast for a few moments, a sense of urgency taking over as he shifted further down the bed.
He leaned between Riley’s legs, wrapping an arm around each thigh and holding onto her luscious hips. He kissed her through her panties that were thoroughly soaked by this point. Satisfied by how aroused she was, he hooked his teeth onto them and peeled them down her legs, resuming his place between her thighs once it was done.
He licked his way up her slit, causing her to jolt forward into his mouth as her hips lifted off the bed. He gripped her hips tighter and began to lick her. Slow and gentle at first, from bottom to top. He stiffened his tongue and inserted the full length of it into her, siphoning in and out, lapping up all of her juices as her head fell back and she started to moan.
“Drake!” she gasped. Her moans added further fuel to the fire, encouraging him to work twice as hard so that he could hear more of them. He wanted her to unravel under his mouth before he ravaged her body.
He removed his tongue, replacing the empty space with two fingers, leaning down to suck on her bundle of nerves at the same time. He alternated between sucking and licking her clit, curling his fingers as he pumped in and out of her.
With one final, “Drake!” he felt the dam burst within her, and she coated his fingers with her sweet cream. He paused to look at her as he sucked his fingers clean of her.
He stood from the bed, unbuckling his belt and carefully unzipping his pants, sliding them down his legs. His dick was as big and as firm as the rest of his body, and Riley’s mouth instantly started salivating like it was a cold popsicle on a hot summer day. Wordlessly, she leapt off the bed and got down on her knees in front of him.
“Riley, you don’t have to - oh!” she took him in her mouth and quickly got to work, taking him deep into her mouth and throat as far as she could go, her saliva getting it nice and wet for the next stage of the evening. She leaned back until just the head was in her mouth, swirling her tongue around and suctioning the tip and she simultaneously pumped up and down his girth with her hand. She felt a slight twitch before he gently pressed her chest, releasing himself from her mouth and urging her to lay back on the bed.
She leaned back with anticipation as he hovered over her body, his member pressing between her legs, a thigh on either side of him. He leaned down to kiss her, slipping his tongue in her mouth and sucking on her bottom lip gently before asking, “Condom?”
“Oh, uh, yes...” she dug around in her bedside drawer for a moment, retrieving what they needed. She tore open the foil and slid it down the length of him as quickly as she could, unwilling to wait much longer for him to be inside of her.
He leaned over her body, offering one last soft kiss as he positioned himself at her entrance. Swiftly, he slid himself inside her body, causing her to gasp.
“Are you okay?” he asked, pausing as she adjusted to his girth, stilling his movements entirely.
“Yes, yes! More than okay! Move!” she wrapped her legs around him, pulling him into her further. He needed no more encouragement. He grasped onto the sides of her thighs, positioning her body to meet his every thrust as he pounded into her, causing her to howl in pleasure.
“Oooohhh, Drake. Fuck!” she groaned deliriously, generating a cocky smirk to rest on his face.
“That’s what we’re doing,” he responded sarcastically. Before she was able to return his quip with one of her own, he doubled down and leaned over her body, resting his weight on his forearms for stability. He slid in an out of her body, almost coming out of her entirely before thrusting deep within her, making her feel so empty and then instantly filling the void within her, bringing her to the edge of delirium. She felt so good, he was having trouble containing himself. He tried to think of anything and everything that would keep him from getting off. He wanted this to last as long as possible.
He withdrew, causing her to whimper instantly. “Drake, what -“
“On your knees,” he commanded smoothly, and she followed his instructions right away. He pressed himself against her until she started to squirm, pressing herself back against him until he went inside just a little. He slid his arm underneath her body, angling her sweet ass so he could reach her from the back. He started to rock inside of her as she groaned and wailed with pleasure, rubbing his hand in circles and winding her body tighter than a spring. It didn’t take long before she burst, her muscles spasming down around him as she climaxed.
“Thank god,” he murmured, too quiet for Riley to hear, quickly finding release of his own after taking a few final pumps within her.
He withdrew from her body slowly, discarding the condom in the bin and cleaning himself off. He lay beside her, wrapping his arm around her safely as they both recovered, feeling happier than he had in a very long time.
__________________________
Drake woke up a few hours later in an unfamiliar place, momentarily forgetting what had occurred until her saw Riley laying beside him, hair fanned out across the pillow. He found a blanket on the lounge chair beside of the bed, and he draped it across her body so she wouldn’t get cold.
Hmmm... that’s a nice chair. Maybe we could trying doing it there next time. Next time? What was he thinking. As amazing as Riley was, he didn’t see how they could possibly make a real relationship happen between them. Everybody knows that long distance relationships never work. Drake started to get dressed, fumbling around for his clothes in the dim lighting.
“Drake?” Riley whispered, her voice barely audible with sleep. “Are you leaving?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you yet. I was going to wake you before I slipped out. I didn’t mean to fall asleep. Our flight home is actually scheduled for tomorrow morning, er, I guess it’s this morning now.”
“Oh,” she stated sadly. “Well, let me give you my number. Maybe we can text or Facetime or something?” she asked hopefully.
“Sure, Brooks. I’d love that.”
He typed her number into his phone and she walked him to the door, the blanket he’d covered her with wrapped around her body. He leaned down to kiss her, sweet and soft, pouring so much emotion into it that you would have thought he was her longtime lover going off to war or something. She shook off the thought. She knew what she had been getting into, after all.
After Drake left, she tried to go back to sleep to no avail. Drake had really lit a fire within her - mind, body, and soul. She truly hoped that he would call.
About 15 minutes after Drake left, Riley thought she heard a knock at the door. Who would be bothering her this early? It wasn’t even light out yet. Surely enough she heard it again, three more raps at the door. Could it be him?
She quickly burritoed herself, covering all of her exciting bits with the blanket around her. She opened the door, expecting to see Drake, but...
Maxwell waited behind the door, perking up with interest as she opened it, trying not to let his eyes wonder once he realized what she was wearing.
“Um, hi, Riley! How would you feel about taking a trip to Cordonia?”

Baker was named number three on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time list, and is the subject of the documentary Beware of Mr. Baker.
“Gifted with immense talent, and cursed with a temper to match, Ginger Baker combined jazz training with a powerful polyrhythmic style in the world’s first, and best, power trio,” said the Rolling Stone article. “The London-born drummer introduced showmanship to the rock world with double-kick virtuosity and extended solos.”

Lewisham-born Baker was known for being a mercurial and argumentative figure, whose temper frequently led to on-stage punch-ups.
His father, a bricklayer, was killed in the Second World War in 1943, and Baker was brought up in near poverty by his mother. He joined a local gang in his teens and when he tried to quit, gang members attacked him with a razor.
Baker suffered from heroin addiction, which he acquired as a jazz drummer in the London clubs of the late 1950s and early 1960s. He once told The Guardian he came off heroin “something like 29 times”.
Tributes for the drummer have been pouring in on Twitter.
Paul McCartney called Baker a “wild and lovely guy”, writing: “We worked together on the ‘Band on the Run‘ album in his ARC Studio, Lagos, Nigeria. Sad to hear that he died but the memories never will.”
Baby Driver director Edgar Wright wrote: “RIP the music giant that was Ginger Baker. The beat behind too many favourite songs from Cream, The Graham Bond Organisation and Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated.”
Rock journalist Mark Paytress tweeted: “Like Hendrix, Ginger Baker was a name synonymous w/ early days rock. Once you heard him play, saw pics & footage, he seemed to embody the music’s power, the culture’s adventure. Spending a day w/ him in 2014 magnified it all. Lost a big one this morning.”
Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg simply wrote: “Thank you Ginger Baker.”

Jane looks at him from across the grounds where she’s cheering with her fellow Marauders.  They did it; they graduated. For a brief moment, all the fear and panic left them and was replaced with an incredible feeling of pride.
She is hoisted up into the air, laughing as Liam spins her around in delight. When he sets her back down, it’s Serena’s turn to throw herself at Jane, screaming with absolute joy.
Jane doesn’t notice the small box Liam pulls out of his pocket, nor does she notice him getting down on one knee. It is only when Serena screams like a mad woman and spins her around that she looks at Liam and gasp.
“Jane, will you-”
“YES!”
She throws her arms around him and buries her face in the crook his neck, a smile threatening to split her face in half. She feels Liam's arms wrap around her, once again picking her up and spinning her around. Out of the corner of her eye, Jane could see her friends, her sisters with tears in their eyes as they watch the proposal play out.
________________________________________________
They join the Order the day after graduation.
McGonagall is the first to protest, claiming that children shouldn’t be allowed to participate in this kind of thing. But they aren’t children. Not anymore. They have a war to win now, whether they like it or not.
Missions start soon after that and they’re all separated. Well, except for Black and Potter.  Dumbledore sends the two on missions more frequently than any other members of the Order, much to Liam’s dismay. Even the Death Eaters have to acknowledge that their powers combined are terrifying.
One particular mission drives Liam over the edge with worry. Jane and Serena are sent to investigate an abandoned warehouse where there has been rumour of Death Eater activity. When they manage to sneak in, the whole building is swallowed by flames with no way of escaping. It takes the Order hours to find them due to the amount of wreckage and magical defences the Death Eaters left behind. When they do manage to pull them through the rubble of brick, neither is conscious and their bodies look lifeless.
________________________________________________
They are in St. Mungo's when she finally wakes up.
Liam refuses to leave her side, despite the Healer threatening to call the Aurors on him. Serena wakes up shortly before Jane does. Honestly, it scares him how the two are connected together, as if they share the same mind.
“Liam?”
He shoots out of his chair and begins to kiss every inch of her face, wrapping his arms around her thin frame. Jane doesn’t say anything. She just wipes the tears off his cheeks and lets him hold onto her for a bit until Patty comes in, screaming with worry and ‘get well soon’ cupcakes.
________________________________________________
They decide to move the wedding up, only inviting the most crucial people. Neither Jane nor Liam care for any fancy stuff. They just want to be wed to one another. The wedding is small and quaint, nothing extravagant. They hold the ceremony in the field near Godric’s Hollow, where Jane’s parents used to live so that she can feel as though they are with her. Liam’s brother Philip never shows up, but a small part of Liam is happy he doesn’t.
Serena walks her down the aisle because she’ll be damned if anyone else gets to do it.
The look Liam is giving her is beyond anything look he's ever given her before. It’s pure love, and Jane can’t help her heart skipping a few beats.
Before the ceremony conductor can even begin, Serena whispers not so quietly, “You better take good care of my girl, Evans.”
Everyone laughs and Liam promises he’ll take incredible care of Jane, just as she will with him. The ceremony goes by with minimal trouble. Liam forgets how words work just seconds before his vows, but other than that, the wedding is perfect. They say their vows, promising to love each other until death do them part, and place the rings on each other’s fingers.
The crowd cheers when they kiss, sealing their marriage. The after party and dinner are perfect. At the end of the night, Liam manages to steal his wife away from her friends and whisks her home.

Jane and Liam leave for a short honeymoon, which means the Order is without two of its finest members. Serena calls Jane via mirror about twice a day, to the point that Remy has to physically take it from her. Although, she understands that Serena is simply worrying for her sister's safety.
Padfoot’s nerves get worse and worse with every day, to the point of barricading herself in her flat, not even Patty’s firewhiskey cookies could get her to come out. Others say she's being overdramatic, simply craving attention, but Remy and Patty recognize her behaviour all too well.
When Jane went home for the two weeks of Christmas break back in first year, Remy stayed at the castle with Serena, as neither really felt like going home. Serena was so depressed in those two weeks, Moony could barely recognize her friend.
When Jane did eventually come back, Serena was back to her old self in seconds, practically fusing herself with Jane the moment she arrived.
And just as before, the second Jane and Liam came back one week later, Serena is the first to welcome Jane back, refusing to leave her side for more than a few seconds.
________________________________________________
Everything starts going downhill a few weeks later. Death Eater attacks become more frequent and less predictable. More people, both muggle and magical, disappear every day.
The Ministry starts to collapse.
The Order is losing members fast. First the Prewett brothers, who died fighting like knights. Then, it was the Mckinnons. The entire family is whipped out, not a single person carrying the name nor bloodline is left alive.
As if things couldn't get any worse, Liam is sent way to Merlin knows where leaving Jane with no knowledge of his whereabouts or whether or not he’s even alive.
And as always, it’s Serena that seems to find her in her states of panic. Jane is on the bathroom floor, absolutely sobbing. Remy is doing Dumbledore a favour, no one knows what it is. Patty is taking care of her mum, something she’s been doing more and more frequently so it’s just Jane and Serena left to figure it out.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay. What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Jane, my love, what's wrong? Please don't cry. It’s going to be okay. Liam is okay.” She’s trying to comfort her, trying to be strong, but her own lover is missing as well and she’s not sure for how long she can keep up her charade of ‘I’m fine.’
As for Jane, she can’t speak. Her throat feels as though there are a million shards of glass in it. Every word, every sound she makes hurt. Her mind hurts, her body hurts, everything hurts.
She’s nineteen, for shit’s sake.
She grabs her wand from where it’s rolled next to the tub and performs the spell one more time.
Serena is left speechless as watches the soft blue light glow from the tip of Jane’s wand when she points it to her stomach, the echo of Jane's sobs surrounding the room.
“I CALL BEING GODMOTHER!!” she screams, not out of anger or fear or panic, but out of pure joy.
Jane looks at her as though she’s crazy. Honestly, knowing Serena, she probably was. Out of all the reactions she could have gotten from her sister, this was by far the best one.
________________________________________________
She tells Liam over dinner one night and he chokes.
“You’re what!?”
“I’m pregnant.”
It’s silent for a moment, Jane doesn’t know what to say to Liam and Liam to Jane.
Then, “Okay.”
They don’t talk about until they’re both tucked in bed, Jane curling into Liam’s back. He turns around suddenly and wraps her up in his arms, pressing his lips all over her face until they’re both drunk on kisses.
“You’re pregnant,” he whispers over and over again, holding his wife closer.
Jane doesn't really know what to do or say. She just looks up at him and whispers a soft, ‘Yeah.’
“We’re going to be parents.”
“Mmhmm.”
“There’s a war…”
“I know.”
Once again, silence engulfs the room, only this time, it isn’t threatening nor depressing but a soft, gentle silence that reassures both of them.
“We’re going to be the best bloody parents ever,” Liam says, grinning from ear to ear.
She can’t help but smile as well, feeling immense relief that he wants to be a part of this family, that she won’t have to do it alone.
Serena’s words from the previous week come crashing back to her. Her sister had smacked her when she mentioned that she thought Liam would leave her when she told him of the pregnancy.
“How can you not see how much that idiot loves you?! I know you're as blind as a bat without your glasses Prongs but seriously open your eyes a bit damnit!”
________________________________________________
They don’t go into hiding just yet but they stop participating in missions.
Jane doesn’t like it at first, her constant needs to be active is slowly being limited every day with her growing belly and Liam isn't helping the situation either. She understands that he’s nervous about the baby but she’s able to wash her own dishes for shit sakes!
Cravings start, hormones go haywire and Liam is calling Serena, Remy and Patty at least twice a day because Jane is bloody terrifying when she pregnant and he needs help. Serena always ends up cuddling Jane, stealing whatever snack she has.  Patty is cooking up a storm in the kitchen to satisfy whatever odd craving Jane gets. Remy either joins in on the cuddles or help Liam with whatever he’s doing.
At one point or another, Dumbledore needs Liam for an emergency mission, something about brewing potion? He leaves for what feels like years, promising to be back as soon as he can. It’s not soon enough though because Jane goes into labour and he still isn’t back and she’s panicking because she can’t floo or apparate to St-Mungos due to the new security. Serena isn’t answering the mirror, Remy has once again disappeared and no one is there to help her deliver a freaking baby.
But then McGonagall is at her side helping her get on her feet.
“M-Minnie? How-?”
“Liam desperately wanted someone to come check on you, thank goodness I did.”
She gets Jane to lie down on the sofa and starts to prepare for the delivery. McGonagall had helped Euphemia and Fleamont deliver Jane into the world so she knew what she was doing. It breaks her heart to know that they can’t be here to witness their own baby giving birth.
She pushes the feelings and memories aside and begins performing the proper sanitation spells, there is a time and place for those memories and now certainly isn’t the time.
Jane cringes as the contractions begin and the next thing she remembers is Liam at her side holding onto her hand for dear life. She hears Remy somewhere in the room as well as Serena and Patty. An immense wave of pain hits her full force and she can’t contain her screams.
“Almost there Jane!”
She’s pretty sure Liam’s hand is now broken but she doesn’t care. He’s the reason she is in so much pain and she’ll be damned if he’s ever allowed to look at her again, let alone touch her.
All at once, all the voice in the room go quiet and there is this tiny little ball of black hair wrapped in a blanket crying his little lungs out. McGonagall hands him to Serena, expecting her to hand him over to Jane while she tidies up. Instead, Serena ends up hogging him for a solid ten minutes until Jane finally says;
“Hey Padfoot, think I’ll ever get the chance to hold my baby, you know since I spent the last 17 hours getting him here.”
“Ya… ya sure” She’s in a daze, a complete daze. Serena slowly hands her godson to her sister and the smile on Jane’s face when she holds her boy for the first time is blinding. Liam cuddles next to her, admiring his son who’s making the cutest little noises.
“We made him.” Jane says, she still can’t believe it, that they actually made his tiny human out of practically nothing, and now they get to watch him grow and learn and discover. They’ll see him off on the train to Hogwarts and he’ll come home for holidays, raving about all his adventures.
________________________________________________
“There is a prophecy”
Jane and Liam sit in Dumbledore’s office, listening as he explains that one of the new members of staff, Sybill Trelawney, foresaw a prophecy.
“A member of Voldemort inner circle… heard a part of the prophecy and has delivered the message to Voldemort.” Dumbledore continued, looking at the young parents with worry. “They believe this prophecy is about-”
“Harry” Jane whispers. She isn't sure what to feel, rage, panic, fear, all of the above. She doesn’t realize she’s shaking until Liam slips his hand in hers and whisper sweet things in her ear.
But sweets words won’t protect their son. Sweet words won’t protect them from that maniac.
“Do you know the name of the Death Eater that heard the prophecy?” Liam asks, he wants to know, he needs to know. Even though he feels like he already knows exactly who reported back to Voldemort, a little part of him is praying it wasn’t her.
“I do not find it wise to-”
“It was Snape, wasn’t it?”
The room goes silent. Dumbledore looks at Liam for a moment then lowers his eyes.
“Yes, Severa Snape was the Death Eater that reported back to Voldemort.”
________________________________________________
They go into hiding immediately after there conversation with Dumbledore. The fidelius charms is installed on their house and they make Serena the secret keeper. It’s hard at first, they’re used to taking Harry out in the garden to play or taking walks as a family, now they can’t even open their front door without feeling threatened.
They do have a few memorable moments thought, more than a few, like when Harry first learned how to walk.
“LIAM!! GET IN HERE! HARRY’S WALKING!! HE WALKING!!”
“WHAT!?”
And so Liam comes running into the living room, hyperventilating, wearing an apron that says ‘kiss the cook’ while holding a baby mash covered whisk.
God, parenting does some weird things to people.
Harry finds his dad absolutely to amusing and tumbles back on his bottom, giggling and laughing like a little baby should.
“Oh my sweet baby, is daddy being silly” Jane is laughing with Harry and Liam can’t help the smile that stretches across his face when he looks at them. He makes eye contact with Jane and she walks over to him to place a sweet kiss on his lips. Neither are aware of Harry standing up nor do they see him struggling to balance on his feet. It’s only when Harry makes a noise of uncertainty do the parents turn around and scream.
“That’s it, Harry!! Come to mummy!! Come here, Harry!” Jane shouts and crouches down on her knees, stretching her arms out. Liam crouches next to her and tries bribing Harry with the whisk covered in baby food.
“That’s it Harry! Come here baby boy!”
And just like that Harry takes his first step. Then one more, and one more before he stumbles forward into his mother’s arms. Jane picks him up and twirls him around, laughing, smiling, living. Liam joins in as well and they just enjoy the moment as a happy family, life in a small cottage, hiding from a mad man.
But they make it work.
________________________________________________
Someone is pounding on their door and they have half a mind to call Dumbledore, only to have Serena barge in dragging Patty who, bless her soul, looks absolutely thrilled to see Jane and Liam again.
“Serena what’s-”
“We need to switch secret keeper” Serena cuts Jane off, “They know Jane, I know they know, it-s it’s t-t-oo obvious!”
She explain to them that while she was walking home, a group of Death Eaters had ambushed her, she was able to escape in the end but not before they mocked her on how easy it would be to find the Potters, that it was so obvious that Serena Black would be Jane Potter’s secret keeper.
“Merlin beard Serena, why on earth were you walking home!?” Jane says, ignoring everything her sister had previously said.
“I...I w-was. I was walking home from the bar and I wasn’t thinking-”
“Why were you walking home from a bloody bar!?!”
“... Remy broke up with me”
Jane takes Serena into another room while Liam makes tea for Patty. He expect Jane put a muffliato spell so they could have a little more privacy, or because Serena hates appearing weak in front of others. Once the pair do finally come out, they preform the switch to Patty and Jane later explains to Liam what happened.
“They got into a really big fight, Serena wanted to know where Remy kept disappearing to. Remy got mad because she thought Padfoot didn’t trust her, which, not going to lie, is true. They lost that trust a long time ago when Remy started going on ‘secret missions’. Anyway, they both lost their temper and one thing led to another and Moony kicked Siri out of their flat.”
He can tell she’s trying really hard not to panic, or cry. Two of her best friends were now turned against each other. They went from loving each other more than anything in the world to not being able to be in the same room as one another.
“Where’s Serena going to stay now?”
“I told her to say here but you know how stubborn she is, she wants to be independent, or at least have some time away from all this… rubbish? I don’t know” Jane hides her face in her hands, she so incredibly tired and is losing hope more and more everyday. She wants nothing more then to be back at Hogwarts, where they were all safe and happy and…
“It’s going to be okay.” Liam whispers in her ear, holding her close.
“I hope so.”
________________________________________________
Harry’s first birthday goes off with a bang. Even though they are under extreme house arrest and can’t invite anyone to celebrate, they still receive plenty of well wishes and gifts from friends. Serena specifically, who sends Harry a toddler broom he can’t get enough of it. All he wants to do all the time is fly around the living room and give the cat a heart attack.
Liam writes to her, thanking her for the gift and voicing his concern about Jane. She’s becoming more and more distance and snappy. Liam suspects it’s the fact that she is constantly enclosed in the small cottage, no freedom to fly outside or run in the woods and explore. She’s going crazy cooped up in here.
Dear Padfoot…
________________________________________________
On the 31st of October, 1981 …
Patty came screaming at their door, crying, sobbing, wailing. She was in hysteria.
“I’m sorry! I’M SORRY!! I never meant to! He was so much stronger than me Jane and I’m sorry! Jane, please forgive me! Jane PLEASE!”
“Merlin Patty! What are you talking about!?”
But then the front door is blown off it’s hinges and there are Death Eaters running inside followed by…
“Wormy… y-you… why”
“JANE RUN! TAKE LIAM AND HARRY! JUST RUN! I’LL HOLD HIM OFF!” It’s Patty, she’s screaming curses and hexes Jane had never even heard off, eliminating Death Eaters with each curse until;
“Avada Kedavra!!” Voldemort shouts, waving his wand and hitting Patty scare in the chest.
“PATTY!!”
It’s the last word that leaves her lips until Liam grabs her from behind and apparates way with Harry, but Jane is struggling against him, she wants to help her friend.
Her sister.
She isn't focusing on where she’s going or even who she’s with. She trying to get back to Patty.
Patty, Patty, Patty
“JANE!!”
It isn’t Patty, or Serena or Remy… who is it?
“JANE PLEASE!!”
Liam?
She doesn’t know where she is, only knows that she’s in a lot of pain, more pain then she’s ever felt before.
“Jane you’re splinched!”
She could vaguely hear Harry crying but she didn't know where. She couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. She felt as though someone just cast the cruciatis curse but one million times worse.
“Fuck-fuck-fuck FUCK! Jane just- hang in there okay, I’ve got some dittany somewhere in here, just-just don’t close your eyes!”
Liam is trying desperately to make sure Harry is okay as well as heal Jane, he’s frantically looking in the small emergency bag the had packed in advance in case something went wrong for a bottle of Dittany.
“Oh for the love of- ACCIO DITTANY!!”
The small bottle comes shooting in his hands and he quickly makes use of it. She was splinched all around the right shoulder down her chest and down her right arm, she was twitching like mad and was mumbling incoherently.
“Jane don’t you fucking dare close your eyes! Don’t you dare! Jane please, please, please don’t close your eyes, just stay with me! S-stay with m-me.”
He pours the dittany directly where the wound is and it made a sizzling sound causing Jane to scream and Harry to cry even more.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry Jane, it’s going to hurt but it will help, it will help I promise. Just please, don’t close your eyes… don’t-don’t close your e-eyes.”
She was trying, she was trying really hard to listen to Liam. To focus on something other than sleeping but she was so tired and her eyelid felt ridiculously heavy. She tries focusing on Liam's voice, on Harry’s crying, on the anything but falling asleep.
But it becomes harder and harder and the dittany isn’t working fast enough for the amount of blood she is losing. She could feel something at the back of her mind pulling her away from reality, away from her family and no amount of struggling to stay awake is helping.
The last thing she remembers is hearing the sound of her beloved husband crying, as he holds her limp body in his arms and her beautiful baby boy who screaming is desperation for his mother before sleep consumes her.

God Love 💜
The one thing I have yet to figure out is how people go through such a difficult journey without God. What do you do when your energy is depleted, everything you love is under attack, and your will is exhausted? When your the last line of defense and you fail, what’s next? See for me I had to come to the realization that I could not do this on my own. What supported my decision is how important my marriage is to me. I thought about how much I love my wife. We have this beautiful saying called God love 💜, this is the love we possess for each other. It’s deeper than anything physical or material. God love 💜 runs deeper than what you see in the mirror, it impacts you from a heart and soul perspective! God love is what created our children. It’s what makes the hard times worth it. It’s what makes the impossible possible.
You don’t think your marriage will be in jeopardy when you face loss or devastation at the level my family has? Think again. Even the most powerful people, Aristocrats, Nuevo riche, celebrities, athletes, can’t keep their marriages and their families from falling apart! You know why? When you lean on your own understanding, when your driven by your own results, when all you have is what you see in the mirror, YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL!
We all fail, we all fall, we all lose control and at this time when everything you know is spiraling out of control, this is where God comes in! He relieves you of your pain. He brings people into your life like my parents who have been so incredibly strong 🙏💙 during this time helping to take care of our family. Supplying us with medical wisdom, love, and support. Aunt Patti and Uncle Bucky who have been down this road before and are able to offer up wisdom and strength. My cousin Danielle who saved her placenta from her babies birth and is willing to offer up this selfless support.
God shows up with thousands of people praying 🙏 for your baby boy, that do not even know him, because they are so moved by his story. People like Marc, Laurie, Allie, Amanda and Natacha who offer up resources to create fundraiser and awareness. People like Mark from the J19, come support you in areas of your life you cannot possibly keep up with, churches like Praise and Coastal. Family and friends which are too many to mention, who contribute with time, money, prayers, and gifts for Israel Amazing teams of Drs, nurses, and staff who comfort your child during the most difficult and torturous procedures. People like Lorraine and Stephen who offer state police 👮protection and software expertise to bring the message out through social media. People like Leroy and Kris who have Rachel and I stand up at their wedding, where this picture was taken, and ask us to come up and receive prayer from the audience, for Israel. During their wedding, the happiest day of their lives, really, are you kidding? No,it actually happened and during a time where the world would have you believe everyone is out for themselves or hates each other, love triumphs! Truly this is only half the story and a quarter of the people who have shown up. The point is without God how much of this would have really happened?
Israel’s pain becomes his own when I fail, when the last line of defense can no longer keep it together. I was always raised to do it myself. I rarely relied on others for fear of what they may say I owe them in return. What happens when your failing? When your nights are spent sleepless, in fear, crying on your floor, wishing this plague never came to your doorstep? What then? What about the rest of your family? I have 3 other children? What happens to them? I tell you what happens. You lose everything! All of it. This is not going to be me and this is not going to happen to my family. I truly believe that without God Israel would not be doing as well today as he is.
Listen, take the step towards faith. Leave your own understanding behind. Ask God to fill you with his wisdom! Be prepared to see the world in a way you would have never experienced before! Take my word for it your life will never be the same again! 🙏💙🙏

I was talking about Wonder Woman at work today, and my deskmate said that she didn't like the movie because she thought that nothing Wonder Woman did was about herself. All the impetus and action was about someone else, generally a man. And so she thought it was a bad feminist movie. I didn't know how to respond beyond "you are wrong" and I have to see her again monday. Please help me come up with coherent arguments?
Um, what? Since when does Diana spend the movie doing something for a man?
(Sorry, I’m just confused at your coworker’s logic here.)
Diana is the driver of the action throughout the movie and the other characters all play a role in her story somehow, not the other way around. She is the one to rescue Steve when he crash-lands on Themyscira, hears about the war, decides it sounds like Ares’ doing, and decides to peace out against everyone’s advice (including that of her mother/aunts/the other Amazons) to go take care of it. She decides to take Steve off the island with her, they go to London, Diana is the one who insists that they go to the front, and spends the rest of the time pretty much flat-out ignoring whatever Steve thinks she should do (don’t cross No Man’s Land, don’t go after Ludendorff, come with him to stop the plane, etc). Steve is portrayed as (understandably) not actually believing that she is the immortal clay-daughter of Zeus from Awesome Lesbian Paradise Island destined to kill another Greek god, but he doesn’t belittle her for it, isn’t sarcastic and abrasive to everyone he meets, tries to protect her, tries to teach her about Earth customs, and goes along with her plans even when he doesn’t understand them (i.e. telling her to follow the smoke rings to find Ludendorff). I legit cannot think of once when he’s actually the one deciding what Diana does or when she listens to him, and he’s given the same kind of role that is usually given to the female love interests of male superheroes: he’s concerned about her hero activity, his reactions are mostly dictated by her actions, she decides what’s going on and then he goes along with that, he has the eye candy moments, she has to save him several times, and he ultimately dies in service of her character arc. Diana’s goal (find and kill Ares, the reason the Amazons were established) remains paramount throughout the entire movie and is never sacrificed for Steve (or anyone else’s) interests. Diana of course eventually does this, but discovers it’s more complicated than she thought.
Then there’s the broader story/narrative architecture of the movie. The Amazons in the beginning look and dress like actual female warriors; they’re strong, muscled, wearing actual armor (which was why it was so squint-worthy when Justice League wanted to skimp them up more) and presented as powerful and capable. They’re visibly diverse and they are not stick-thin models in golden bikinis. The film is obviously aware that Diana is beautiful, but her looks are never made the point of her character. Etta roasts Steve when he tries the cliched trick of “putting glasses on a woman and suddenly she’s not hot.” There are no leering up-skirt angles or lingering cleavage shots. The film is (mercifully) totally devoid of any “Diana must use her sexuality to get ahead!” or “Diana meets Real Men who must teach her about sex” (part of why the boat scene was so brilliant) or “Steve is a sarcastic asshole who is justified in laughing at her naivete.” And of course, thank fuck, nothing remotely like Whedon’s favored “sexual violence/infertility makes a woman Tough and Broken.” (I mean, if you have seen his leaked Wonder Woman script, which a) is a flaming pile of poop and b) literally does all the above things, you will understand just how much of a bullet we dodged.)
Diana is allowed, as the filmmakers have commented on many times, to be a kick-ass warrior and also a woman who loves babies and ice cream and has feelings for Steve and whose power is in fact based on love, not His Murdered Parents and Angst (yes, you know who I’m looking at) or all the other de rigueur Gritty Origin Story male superheroes. Strong Female Characters ™ exist in their dozens as basically men with unnecessarily revealing boobplate armor, and are Repressed and Tormented and Grim and like to drink and have hard pasts and so on, and it’s extremely refreshing that they did not do that with Diana. Especially given how much fandom tends to hate and disregard/demonize traditionally “feminine” female characters. Diana is clearly awesomely strong and powerful (to this day I cannot watch the No Man’s Land sequence without crying, like, all the tears) but she’s not a machine, and her compassion – for the people suffering in the war, for Steve, for Charlie, for the villagers, and even for Ares – is a key facet of her character. (Plus we have the scene of her climbing the tower to get the magical sword, but later discover it’s not the sword that’s special, it’s her).  Yes, I wish she’d gotten to interact more substantively with female characters outside Themyscira, but then, you don’t have a single man on screen for at least the first 15 minutes until Steve crash-lands, and that whole battle on the beach. So the Amazons are awesome, as noted above. I can live.
This is still not even to mention the fact of the men that Diana does travel with. Steve is the only typical White Leading Man, and even he mostly spends his time figuring out how to go along with whatever slightly crazy thing Diana is doing now. Charlie is a Scottish sniper with PTSD who Diana recognizes as having other talents than killing. Sameer is a Middle Eastern man who gets to point out that his race has stopped him from doing what he really wants to do. Chief is played by an actual Native actor and gets a line about the fact that Steve’s people have killed all of his. We also have that glimpse of Sikh soldiers heading to the front – in WWI, the British Raj was in full swing, there were a lot of troops from the Indian subcontinent, but they simply aren’t noticed or mentioned. We’ve talked about the Amazons already, but yes. Gal Gadot herself is Ashkenazi Jewish and did not do a British or American accent for the movie. The character of Wonder Woman was originally created (iirc) by a guy in a polyamorous relationship with his wife and another woman, specifically around themes of female empowerment. Plus, on the simplest level, I (and pretty much every woman I know) felt like a million bucks after seeing it. We finally got the superhero movie that we deserved, stripped of all the layers and layers of Male Gaze bullshit that we just have to take for granted, and good for Patty Jenkins insisting she got paid what she deserves.
Lastly, I am leery of anointing anything as a piece of Perfect Feminist Media ™, but the sheer fact that it took until 2017 for this movie to be made is a reflection of, again, the amount of BS it had to get through and do away with. There will always be more improvement to be had and to make, but it was a fucking awesome start.

This Is Me--Part 2
Characters: John Winchester x Reader
“John…” you whimper as you lay in the glow of your multiple orgasms. You run your fingers through his chest hair. It has always kept you calm.
“Yes, baby?” his voice is groggy, tired from pushing you each to your limits. He pulls you closer to him.
“Why me?” you ask, a rasp in your throat from screaming his name.
“What?” He sits up slightly and gives you a confused look, “What do you mean?”
You don’t make eye contact with him. You keep your attention on his chest. “You are so...you. So handsome. So strong. And I’m just...I’m me.”
He adjusts himself to his side to face you, “Yes. You’re you. Which is why I love you. You’re beautiful, smart, strong, and a damn good hunter.”
“I learned from the best,” you say with a smile.
He laughs softly, “Baby, you gotta stop with this. I love you.”
“I’m broken, John. I’m bruised,” your eyes fill with tears.
“And I’m not?” He places a hand gently on your face, “A demon killed my wife. I raised my boys in this life. You don’t think I’m broken, too?”
You nod slightly, “But John…”
“Stop,” he interrupts you, “I love your broken parts. I love your bruises and your scars and your nightmares. I love you as you are. Stop questioning it, okay?”
“Okay,” you give up on the argument, “I’m sorry.”
He sighs loudly, “None of that either. You don’t need to apologize for a damn thing.”
You smile, a tear streams down your face. A callous finger meets your cheek and wipes it away. “But I hope you know that you’re way out of my league.”
“I could say the same for you. Going for an old man like me,” he jokes, “And all because I saved you.”
“The hero always gets the girl, right?” You lean closer to him and gently place a kiss on lips.
“Mmhmm…” he groans, wrapping himself around you. You giggle as he overpowers you again. His tongue meets yours and your body tingles. He breaks contact and sprinkles light kisses down your neck.
“Are you ready to go again, old man?!” You exclaim feeling him grow against you.
“You make me feel young again,” he tells you in between each light peck.
You gasp as he exposes his teeth to your skin. “Fuck….”
One year ago:
You sat across from him in the diner, watching as he took a bite out of his burger.
“Damn,” his mouth full, “That’s a damn good burger.”
You stifled a laugh as you pick up a fry, “You act like you haven’t eaten in weeks.”
“I’ve eaten,” he replied, “But I haven’t had anything this good in a long time.” Putting down the food, he reached for the napkin in his lap. He wiped away the bit of grease that managed to escape the patty.
“Best burgers in town!” You said, a grin spread across your face.
He smiled back. His eyes were surprisingly gentle for someone who looked so gruff. Your heart fluttered slightly as he licked his lips. You found yourself suddenly curious of what he could do with that tongue.
“You okay?” He asked. His deep voice snapping you out of your daydream.
You nodded quickly and locked eyes with him as you realized that you had been staring at his mouth. “Yeah! Yeah, I’m good. Just...uh...tired. I’ve never been kidnapped and chased down by a monster before. Kinda took a lot out of me!” You joked, giving him a wink.
“Of course,” he responded, mouth full of food again.
“So, how long have you been hunting monsters?” Your voice low to avoid eyes on you.
“Too long,” he says.
“When did you start?”
He paused, thinking about his response, “When my boys were young. After their mother died.”
“Fuck, I’m sorry. I didn’t know…” you stammer.
“It’s fine. Don’t apologize. A demon killed her. I started hunting. And here we are,” his responses were short.
“Oh…” you looked down at your plate, staying silent the rest of the meal.
John’s hands grab your breasts as you writhe above him.  You throw your head back in pure ecstasy as his cock glides along your g-spot.  Your voices echo through the room, harmonizing with pleasure.  He moves his grip to your hips and holds you down on him.  He thrusts into you until your pussy clenches around him.
“Oh fuck!  John!” you scream out.  You explode onto him just as he lets go.  His love coating your walls.  He pulls you towards him, groaning into your mouth as he kisses you passionately.
“I love you,” he whispers.
You catch your breath and look into his eyes, “I love you…”
You relax your body and savor the feeling of him inside of you.  You rest your head on his shoulder and take in the sweet smell of his sweat.
“Baby, that was amazing,” he rasps, resting his hand on your head.
“You’re amazing,” you whimper.
He strokes your hair and chuckles quietly, “You remember when we met?”
“The Rougarou.  Of course I remember,” you reply, “I remember when I fell in love with you, too.”
“When was that?” he questions.
“About two weeks after that.”
“What?!” he says, genuinely surprised.
One year ago:
John thrusted one final time into you, releasing himself.  He kissed you, tight-lipped as he throbbed.
“Wow…” he sighed, placing his forehead on yours.  You unwrapped your legs from around his waist and relaxed.
“Fuck…” you exhaled, “That was incredible.”
He laughed, “Incredible, huh?  Are your standards that low?”
You smacked his back and gave a small giggle, “Shut up!  No low standards.  I just know good dick when I get it.”
“The mouth on you,” he joked, “I fucking love it.”  He kissed your forehead as he slid out of you.  He rolled to the right side of you and  faced you.
You turned to your side and smiled at him, “So, have I thanked you enough yet?”
“Mmm..I think we’re pretty close to even,” he winked.
“Pretty close?!”
“I think a few more rounds and we’ll be completely even.”
You snuggled up to him and spread long, slow kisses on his chest, “John?”
He groaned softly in reaction to your lips on his skin, “Hmm?”
“Take me with you,” you muttered.
He sighed, “No.  I can’t do that.”
You looked up at him and rested your chin on him, “Why?”
“It’s too dangerous.  And you have a life here.  I’m not going to take that from you.”
“I have nothing here.  My job sucks.  I don’t really have any friends.  I hate this apartment.  I’d much rather be out on the road.  With you.  Please.”
He stroked your back lightly, “Do you have any idea how dangerous this job is, babe?  You’re far too beautiful to be in this life.”
“You’re fucking joking right?!” you shot straight up to a seated position.  “Fuck off with that bullshit!  I want to do this.  I want to learn!  I want to help people like you do.  So please.  Take me with you.”
He stared at you, his eyes completely focused on your bare breasts.  They trailed up to meet your eyes.  He smiled and said, “I’ll think about it.”
“You’ll think about it?  John, you’re going to be leaving any day now.  There’s not much time for you to think about it,” you huffed, crossing your arms in front of your chest.
He gave you a pout and sighed, “Okay, okay.  Let me get a beer and we’ll talk.”
You smirked, “Or…you could fuck my brains out again…”
You leaned over and kissed him slowly. He inhaled and grabbed the back of your head.
“Mmm…” he let go and looked deeply into your eyes, “I think I can do that…”
In one swift motion, he pinned you down and attacked your neck with his teeth.
You shrieked and let out a loud laugh. His beard tickled your skin as he devoured your body again.

Best New Horror Movies on Netflix: Autumn 2017
Tumblr media
There's an overwhelming amount of horror movies to sift through on Netflix, so I've decided to take out some of the legwork by compiling a list of the season's best new genre titles on Netflix's instant streaming service.
Please feel free to leave a comment with any I may have missed and share your thoughts on any of the films you watch. You can also peruse past installments of Best New Horror Moves on Netflix for more suggestions.
Tumblr media
1. The Void
Not afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve, The Void is a fun amalgam of genre favorites such as The Thing, Hellraiser, Prince of Darkness, The Beyond, and Assault on Precinct 13, along with a healthy dose of H.P. Lovecraft for good measure. The '80s inspiration is furthered by a plethora of practical effects and a pulsating, John Carpenter-esque synthesizer score. Set in the most understaffed hospital since Halloween 2, a small group of people fight to survive against Lovecraftian monsters and cultists. A lot of the plot points are familiar, but the astonishing effects are more than enough to make it feel fresh and exciting.

2. The Transfiguration
Like a modern take on George A. Romero's Martin, The Transfiguration is a subversive vampire film. It's also an urban coming-of-age tale with social commentary. The plot concerns an adolescent boy (Eric Ruffin, The Good Wife) who is a practicing vampire in New York City. Not just an avid watcher of horror films - although he name-checks plenty of them - he partakes in murder to drink blood. He begins to question his outlook on life when he befriends a girl who's also an outcast (Chloe Levine, The Defenders). Although largely a somber, dramatic film, there are a couple of truly shocking moments. Due to how raw and real it feels, this one will stick with you.

3. The Devil's Candy
Written and directed by Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones), The Devil's Candy combines elements of haunted house, demonic possession, and home invasion movies, all with a lean toward heavy metal music. It follows a struggling artist (a nearly unrecognizable Ethan Embry, Can’t Hardly Wait), his wife (Shiri Appleby, Roswell), and their teenage daughter (Kiara Glasco, Map to the Stars) as they move into a new home. Meanwhile, the house's disturbed former resident (the great Pruitt Taylor Vince, Constantine) returns, and he takes a liking to the young girl. It's akin to a 1970s slow-burner with modern sensibilities. The restrained approach allows the audience to become more invested in the characters, building toward an unpredictable and emotionally draining final act. Read my full review of the film here.

4. A Dark Song
A Dark Song is an engrossing slow-burn horror film predominantly told with two actors in one location. The story involves a grieving woman (Catherine Walker, Ferocious Planet) who seeks the aid of an unstable cultist (Steve Oram, Sightseers) to perform an elaborate ritual that allows you to ask a guardian angel for a favor. She wants her deceased child back, but this is far from a Pet Sematary retread. It's all about the build-up, with some genuinely creepy moments along the way before it culminates in a tense finale. Irish writer-director Liam Gavin makes a powerful debut anchored by strong performances.

5. What Happened to Monday
What Happened to Monday is set in the not too distant future, when a strict one-child policy is enforced in an effort to preserve the planet. Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) stars as septuplets, who hide from the government by sharing a life; each one only goes out during the day of the week for which they’re named. When Monday disappears, the other six siblings must track her down before someone else does. Rapace wonderfully diversifies the seven parts, and it's quite impressive to see them all seamlessly interacting with one another in the same shot. Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) plays the girls' grandfather who raised them, while Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) is the head of the agency stripping families of their children. Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) directs some superb action sequences in this sci-fi mystery thriller.

6. American Fable
American Fable is true to its name, often playing out like something of a dark fairy tale in the country’s heartland, but its fantastical elements largely take a backseat to a rural drama with mystery/thriller elements. Writer-director Anne Hamilton, who got her start as an intern on Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, makes a dynamic feature debut. Set in the 1980s, the story revolves around Gitty (Peyton Kennedy, Odd Squad), an 11-year-old girl with an affinity for storytelling. She finds herself in a real-life fairy tale upon discovering a man (Richard Schiff, The West Wing) imprisoned in a silo on her family's struggling farm. The picture is an admirable American complement to Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth; not only are their stories thematically analogous, but they also share a similar horned creature. Read my full review of the film here.

7. Here Alone
Here Alone is a zombie movie in which the zombies are almost never on screen - and that's not a bad thing. It depicts the hardships Ann (Lucy Walters, Power) must endure and the elaborate precautions she must take in order to survive, weaving between two different points in time: early in the apocalypse with her husband (Shane West, A Walk to Remember) and their baby, and the present when she befriends a fellow survivor (Adam David Thompson, Mozart in the Jungle) and his teenage daughter. Director Rod Blackhurst (Amanda Knox) delivers a subtle, dramatic character piece with shades of The Walking Dead by crafting dynamic characters backed by engaging performances.

8. Little Evil
Tucker and Dale vs Evil writer-director Eli Craig returns to horror-comedy with Little Evil. Having perfected his deadpan delivery on Parks and Recreation, Adam Scott makes awkward an artform as a man who believes his new wife's (Evangeline Lilly, Lost) 6-year-old son is the literal Antrichrist. The supporting cast, underutilized as they may be, is also great, including Bridget Everett (Patti Cakes), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil), Donald Faison (Scrubs), and Sally Field (Forrest Gump), who is Craig's mother. The most obvious influence is The Omen - it's even name-dropped in the movie - but there are also references to the likes of Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, Children of the Corn, Rosemary's Baby, Child's Play, and The Shining. It's not always laugh-out-loud funny, but it remains entertaining throughout.

9. Patchwork
Patchwork is like a modern take on Frankenhooker with a dash of Re-Animator for good measure. It may not be as masterful a blend of horror and comedy as those '80s classics, but it's delightfully absurd just the same. It also offers a bit of social commentary, namely regarding the issues modern dating women face. Three girls - stuck up Jennifer (Tory Stolper), naive Ellie (Tracey Fairaway, Hellraiser: Revelations), and weird Madeline (Maria Blasucci) - are murdered, sewn together, and brought back to life by a mad scientist. They must learn to coexist in the same body in order to exact revenge. Cleverly conceived by director Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), the girls are portrayed as one Frankenstein-ed creature in some shots and as three individual women in others.

10. Death Note
While purists decry the changes that Death Note made from the popular Japanese manga on which it's based, those with an open mind (or, like me, unfamiliar with the source material) ought to enjoy this Netflix original film. A book labeled Death Note literally falls from the sky to the feet of Light (Nat Wolff, Paper Towns), granting the high school student the power to take the life of anyone whose name he writes inside. Quickly realizing its power without fully recognizing the responsibility, Light dishes out vigilante justice remotely, killing criminals and becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Also mixed up in it are Light's love interest (Margaret Qualley, The Leftovers), his detective father (Shea Whigham, American Hustle), a mysterious man trying to catch him (Lakeith Stanfield, Get Out), and Ryuk (Willem Dafoe, Spider-Man), the monstrous keeper of the book. There's a definite sense that the story has been condensed, things may have been lost in translation, and the fast pacing takes away from the weight of the situation. It may not be a highlight of his filmography, but director Adam Wingard (Blair Witch, You’re Next) delivers a fun, stylish movie with some gory, Rube Goldbergian deaths a la Final Destination.

Bonus: Castlevania: Season 1
Castlevania is a Netflix original animated series based on the classic Konami video game series. Season 1 consists of only four episodes totaling around 90 minutes, resembling more of an anime film than a show, but it ends without a conclusion to the story. Thankfully, a second season is already in the works. Following the murder of his wife, Dracula summons a scourge of goblins to destroy the region of Wallachia and dismember every person along the way. Trevor Belmont, the last in an infamous family excommunicated for dealing in black magic while slaying monsters, leads the charge to bring down the legendary vampire. It's heavy on exposition, but each episode contains a couple of big action scenes to hold viewers over through the abundance of dialogue. Adult language, violence, and gore are on full display, looking great in old-school-style animation. The series is written by comic book scribe Warren Ellis (Red) and stars the voice talents of Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), James Callis (Battlestar Galactica), and Graham McTavish (Preacher).
