(these are going to get long so i'll put a readmore to spare the dashboard lol)
[ indigo ]  when did you first start writing / roleplaying?
for writing (stories) i'd say in early middle school when i realized fanfiction was a thing. before that i just did a lot of journaling, or i'd finish a trip with family and write a long essay about everything we did on the trip. anyways when the fanfic itch hit i wrote obsessively and even titled my story journals as i finished them so i could keep them in chronological order. (like i had one named after spring, another for summer, fall, winter, etc. and then a series named after favorite gemstones x flowers). i think i filled 40+ notebooks of various sizes by high school? they're still somewhere in the basement at my parents' place probably.
then i found ff.net and realized people posted their stuff online so i tried that a bit, and when ff.net started getting dated i moved onto ao3. i don't have as much energy or drive to write the crazy crossover AUs i used to do but it's still nice to post there, or make up original short stories for fun. anyways TL;DR i'm always writing something somewhere sometime~
for RP i wanna say...early 2000s? back when forum RPs were a thing. and i don't mean the fancy kind they have now where you can custom-theme your posts, but just plain message boards where you started a topic to make "threads" and replies to that thread made up your interactions, and the rest of the board was divided up so you had locations in one place and character profiles in another, etc etc. they were everywhere and constantly opening and shutting down so i went everywhere too, lol. also signed up for this digimon PbEM RP group where they had a plotline and an all-original crest lineup but you had to make up your own digidestined and digimon and apply to join. then we'd RP on a word doc and email it to the next person in the group to get the story going. it was sooo old school but it was genuinely fun. i also applied to join a livejournal MFRP group but got rejected because my app wasn't good enough hahaha that got me a little scarred so i hid away from MFRP for awhile
(also a special bonus to the time my friends and i RPed as neopets faeries in a composition book we'd pass around in school between periods.)
for tumblr RP i think it was like 2014 or 2015 after a RP hiatus? the messageboards were dead or dying by then and heck if i was going to learn livejournal and its weird system so i joined some ancient chinese themed MFRP group with a similar chinese drama-inspired muse but that shut down within a month so i wandered around until i found a bigger more active group and stuck around there. and now i'm on and off here. :)
[ plum ]  are you more of a dialogue or a description writer?
when it comes to RP, i think i lean more towards description because i need to give context to my muse's lines. but for stories i'm more dialogue heavy, and i enjoy writing exchanges back and forth between characters.
[ mulberry ]  what tips would you give someone with writer's block?
i don't know if i'm the best person to ask but when i'm stuck on writer's block i work on a different...writing project..... you know they all have different vibes and stuff so a change of scenery gives the mind a break and stuff? it's good.
and it works because i still wanna write, i just don't want to write for Thing A so why not Thing B lol.
it also helps to find a focus, most of my writing block woes come because i don't know where/what to do next, so maybe i find a song, a pretty quote, or an icon that gives me the right "vibes" for what i want to express and think up the rest of the post from that.
it also helps to have a smaller goal to work towards even if you don't know how the ending will turn out. for example, if in a thread my A is interacting with your B and i think to myself "well according to what i've read in B's app he'd prolly hate A and think him a prick, so it'd be interesting if A gets a chance to showcase his prick side in this thread eventually," then i'd insert stuff into my replies to gradually make A more annoying and play off what B replies to work towards that "goal."
of course since RP is directed by both sides those mini-goals sometimes get sidetracked, but then it's fun to see in what new direction we take the interaction instead haha
[ coral ]  give a shoutout to one of your favorite blogs.
i can’t stress enough how helpful quotes/musings blogs are for like aesthetics or muse inspirations for me and the nice thing is most of them are still around even if they haven’t updated in years so HERE HAVE THIS POST WITH LINKS TO A BUNCH MORE GREAT MUSINGS POSTS BLOGS

Well, as lately I have a lot to finish but not much to show, I'm going to recover some old works (and some not so old).
A couple of posters I've made for my Star Trek PBeM group (https://www.starbase118.net/), in which I'm one of the hosts of the graphics contest.

Chazzawrites Challenge Day 1&2
Yesterday was kind of a cluster.  There’s a definitely chance life will continue to be a cluster until some time this Saturday.  Then, I get to breathe for four days.
Day One-Introduce myself:
I am a real doctor with kids and a spouse and a job that alternatively is great and also extremely frustrating.  Say it with me-the US healthcare system sucks.  Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.  For-profit healthcare is an abomination.
I am older than a lot of you.  I’m old enough to remember when Sony Walkmans came out and when phone numbers had six digits (that was a really short period of time) and when there was a price difference between calling in the day or the night for long distance and when phone calls in a phone booth cost a dime.  I remember when cable TV was a big deal and having to get up to change the channel on the TV by turning a dial.  I remember when China opened back up after the Cultural Revolution.  And I grew on the internet when you didn’t give out personal information so I still don’t.
I do love books and reading.  My earliest memories involve me sitting on a couch reading before school, reading after school, and just basically reading.  I read mysteries (murder or otherwise), historical fiction, biography, history, romance, thriller, fantasy, sci-fi, young adult, and middle reader.  I also read some graphic novels.  Lately I’ve been reading more in the YA/fantasy/sci-fi genre.  Goal for this year is to read 55 books.  So far I’ve read 14.
I write fantasy, real life, and rarely fan fiction.  I have multiple WIPs and none of them are finished.  I do not find this to be problematic at all.  I am at most a plantser and honestly am more a pantser.  I have won at Nanowrimo twice in six tries.  I’ll be doing Camp Nanowrimo in April.  My goal is not necessarily to finish a book, but to just write because I want to.  It just brings me joy juice.
I also like to knit and bake.  Actually, baking and cooking for me can be therapeutic.  I love the Great British Baking Show and one day I will attempt choux pastry.  One day...
I also like playing board games (except Risk-I don’t like Risk) and card games and D&D or Pathfinder.  Back in the day, I used to do PBeM which was a great way to do some writing, develop characters, and in general meet some people online.  However, that’s fallen by the wayside because of a lot of different reasons, but it was fun while it lasted.  My Nanowrimo 2019 project is based on two of my PBeM characters and I have delusions of writing for a couple of others.
Day Two-How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing on and off for decades.  I think my first completed story was for 7th grade geography where I got a little too graphic on the aftermath of a leopard attack for my teacher.  That may have been my last completed story too.  I have notebooks from those decades.  I have notebooks from more recent decades.  I have files on floppies and unreadable files on my current laptop because they were written on programs too old for the new ones to decipher.  I have writing that I printed out on a rotary printer that was basically a glorified typewriter.  So yeah... it’s been a long time.

Lately I’ve been waiting to write until I feel like writing, but I know from past experience that never works for me. What I have to do is start writing, even if it’s necessary to force myself, even if my brain is yelling at me about all the other things I should be doing, and then the joy and eventually the motivation follows. So as an extra push, I’m going to list all my current WIPs and ideas and then choose one to work on tomorrow. No need to interact, I just wanted to get this down before I fall face first into bed and slip into unconsciousness because it’s been a long, long week. List behind a cut so you can read or scroll on past. Unless you’re on mobile, then RIP your scrolling thumb, I suppose:
1. (Enterprise) Maggie x Mestral, the OG human/Vulcan couple. Why did Mestral decide to stay behind when the Vulcan rescue ship arrived? Didn’t he know he could get injured or ill and then what was he planning to do?  Nice Vulcan you have there, would be a shame if anything happened to him.
2. (AOS) Gen with Spock and Kirk and Bones and a teensy bit of Spuhura. Basically an eight-chapter story (so far) as an excuse for everyone to take turns cuddling up with Spock in a biobed. It’s therapeutic for him. Really. It’s all because of some weird virus endemic to Vulcan.
3. (TOS, ish?) Bonus chapter to the Spock x Reader fic “In My Heart,” because if I don’t whump Spock just the tiniest bit, a fic never feels completely finished. I’m not as excited about this one but the chapter is done and just sitting there waiting for an edit.
4. (TOS) Second chapter of “Retrograde,” which wasn’t a very popular story. But despite that, I wrote more of it because Spock had to contract the same virus as Kirk, right? The correct answer is “yes.”
5. (Discovery or TOS, depends on which flavor of Sarek you prefer) A new Sarek x Amanda. Another sickfic, of course, and written just because I need Sarek miserable and uncomfortable and then Amanda has to play with his hair because reasons.
6. (OCs) First chapter of a story with my lovely OCs, T’Vath and Ayla. another Vulcan/human couple, both in Starfleet Medical. (If by some small chance you remember T’Vath from a PBEM last year, shhh, no you don’t.) These two dumbass young women adore each other but haven’t quite realized it yet. It’s a sickfic, because hello, have you met me?  And yes, there is a playlist named “Songs for Dumbasses Who Don’t Know They’re in Love.” It is very fitting for the aforementioned dumbasses. Ayla has lost her first patient and is devastated; at the same time, T’Vath is having what she thinks is an allergic reaction until she starts running a fever and collapses. Oops.
7. Damn it, I am not going to let the wonderful writers who are so feral for Vorik (Voyager) and Solok (DS9, ONE EPISODE PEOPLE) influence me. I will not. I will just continue to read their stories and blush furiously during the smut. And not write one of my own. Probably.

AO3 Ask Game
I was tagged by @themarshalstale which, thank you so much! I feel like I always get missed on these (I know why, it’s been 84 years since I published anything but still). 1. How many works do you have on ao3?
46 it seems. Which...look I’m slow man so that’s not surprising. lol Also crippling depression does not make for much production, at least for me.
2. What’s your current AO3 wordcount?
309662 according to the stats.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
So do I could only AO3 or in like life? lol I suppose it should only be on AO3 since this is an AO3 ask game. Hrm. Basically AO3 can be summed up as: Marvel (in several iterations - all Avengers related) Torchwood Highlander But isn’t it more fun to consider my entire fandom life, which, I’m sorry, I’m old so...yeah. Not all of this is was published and beyond that a lot is not available anymore...which is likely for the best. Highlander Star Wars Babylon 5 Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers Marvel (again, several iterations also of note Avengers and X-Men both count) Torchwood Star Trek LOTR Stargate (SG-1, SGA) Mortal Kombat I dabbled with the idea of Potter fic but never got past the ideas stage.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1: You rearrange me till I’m sane Clint finds himself spiraling into a deep depression after the Battle of New York...until the Winter Soldier ends up saving him and inadvertently giving him a new purpose – to save the man that the Soldier had once been – Bucky Barnes. Not one to be outdone, the Soldier decides that his new mission is to ensure that Clint remains alive himself. Protecting a blonde man with a self-destructive streak is somehow very familiar to him. Through the back and forth of who is saving whom they cross the country and learn more about themselves and each other – and perhaps find a reason for living. 2: Five Dates Bucky Didn’t Realize He Was on And the One He Planned Himself To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it.Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.
3: Puck Luck Bucky Barnes is used to the ups and downs of an NHL season. He's used to the unpredictability of the game, knows that bounces don't always go your way, but that doesn't make a broken hand in the final third of the season any easier to deal with. Especially not when he ends up with an impromptu roommate/personal assistant in the form of one Clint Barton - his agent, Natalia Romanova's (rather attractive) friend he hadn't known existed before his injury.
It's just for six to eight weeks - what could possibly happen in that span of time?
4: Loose Lips Launch Ships
Based on the following prompt: “We go to school together and I think you’re cute and apparently you’re also the pizza delivery guy and my little sibling opened the door screaming hey sibling! you know that kid you’re in love with? you really weren’t kidding when you said his jawline could cut steel holy shit-” Bucky is the pizza delivery guy. Clint's younger (foster) brother has a big mouth.
5: Indelible Bucky Barnes has a pretty decent life – a good job, good friends, a cat that adores him - but something is missing. He’s always found body art to be beautiful and inspiring, and on a whim (and with the hope that maybe he can find what he’s missing) he decides to take the plunge and get a tattoo. That's how he meets Clint Barton. Clint's talented and compassionate and there is an instant spark between the two of them. It's not long before Bucky finds himself wondering and wanting more from the relationship despite the ghosts of the past that crop back up. Because Clint makes him feel normal in a way he truly hasn't for years...
(this was pre-Alpine so I was totally chuffed when canon confirmed Bucky’s status as a crazy cat lady (affectionate).
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not.
I really really really want to do it but I often times don’t end up doing it. There are a few reasons. First, I am akwward AF and bad at interaction adn I feel like just saying thank you would be...not enough? Second - I often times tend to like...turtle (aka retreat into myself) when life gets Too Hard/Busy which happens a lot to me (sigh) and then I miss the vague window in my mind in which it would be okay to respond and then it’s even more weird. I do love and cherish all of them. Like there was one months ago that made me go “hmm...I didn’t think I was going to do a sequel to that fic (You rearrange me till I’m sane), timestamp glimpses sure but a sequel hadn’t come to mind” but then the comment made me think! So...who knows? lol Anyway, I literally have been rereading some in an effort to try and get myself going again. Know that if you have commented, I love you.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
At the moment? Probably: Look at you look at me Bucky's in love with Clint - problem is he's really not supposed to be. For Winterhawk Week 2019 - Forbidden Love (I really don’t want to give away the spin in the fic but...if you’re familiar with the Secret Avengers Vol 2 run circa 2013ish (aka when SHIELD initially ‘took control of the team’) that’s a bit of a hint as to the spin). Were it done, Torch Song would be up there. ;) Torch Song Clint is sent back in time, via an alien device, to 1938. While he tries to figure out how to get back home, he takes up singing and entertaining to make ends meet and does his best to not disrupt the timeline. Then he meets a 21 year old Bucky Barnes. --- A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.
7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?
Does *wanting* to write crossovers count? lol I want, so badly, to do more crossovers and fusions (which...are kinda deeper versions of crossovers in a way). The only one I do have posted is a crossover between Highlander and Torchwood -
The Immortal Mr. Jones A series of vignettes (some long, some short) in the life of the newly immortal Ianto Jones. My most ambitions project that I have been working on since late 2011/early 2012 is a fusion of the Avengers with Stephen King’s the Stand. I will get that done at some point *shakes fist*  The Stand, for those who don’t know it, is an epic 1000+ page novel about a flu epidemic (I know) that wipes out over 99% of the population and then two figures representing Good and Evil pull the survivors in two directions for a showdown. So basically it’s a non-powered modern AU set in that universe. It’s a passion and comfort project. lol
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes. Well, minor bitching back when I was in a prior fandom because I tagged a pairing in a fic but it was pre-slash and not labeled as pre-slash. I got hate on...I think it was Torch Song? And I’ve gotten hate on tumblr re me and my fic in general as well. Fandom! *jazz hands* Oh! And I’ve also been hit by those reviewers within Winterhawk (among general Clint pairings actually) who like rate you on either number scales or the “meh” scale. Which isn’t hate exactly but...it’s passive aggressive bullshit because I can’t believe none of them realize at this point that the authors can see their bookmarks - you know?
9. Do you write smut?
Yes. Do I write it well? I have no idea. lol
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I am aware of. Well...there was, I think, one of those reposting sites that had a few fics on it but I don’t think it was being passed off as someone else’s? I can’t quite recall. It’s why I have a note on AO3 about reposting my work anyway.
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not entirely, but sort of. Let me explain - I am part of a PBEM game; which for those unfamiliar since it’s a term that was most heavily in use 15-20 years ago, in which you basically do a round robin type writing thing but rather than everyone writing the same characters you write your own characters and you play off what other people have done. Another way of looking at it is  it’s basically DnD without dice and written down rather than done out loud. You also don’t have to all be around at the same time. It’s a lot of fun and yes I have been in it for 20 years even though there aren’t many of us left but they are some of my dearest friends and fabulous writers. Wins all around.  One of the other writers and I have actually toyed with the idea of doing a co-written fic actually, mostly because we work super well together and keep getting ideas for things but can’t really do them as rpgs since the pbem style isn’t used much anymore.
12. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Winterhawk probably. Though, let’s be real - Han & Leia are epic and amazing as are John & Delenn (from Babylon 5).
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Does wanting to expand The Black Stallion books as a wee child count? lol Not much of that was written save for world building ideas but there was a great oral tradition of telling stories to my friends. Otherwise...maybe a tie between Star Wars and Highlander. Star Wars was a love since I was super young but the writing bug didn’t hit me until around the same time Highlander was a thing as well.
14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You rearrange me till I’m sane for sure. Though Torch Song, if it were finished, would be tied I imagine (I suck at picking favorites). Honorable mention to Puck Luck and Indelible. Tagging: I have seen this like a million times (okay 5) so I feel like everyone has been tagged already that I know. But...I guess... @vexbatch @crazycatt71 @heartonfirewrites and @disruptedvice sorry if anyone has been tagged before.

I love how some obsessions pop back up and remind you why they were such big obsessions for sooo long. Star Trek Online brought ST obsession back in a big way. I made a Romulan Character and I am chilling, missing the days I could throw a dart and find a PBEM RP. I just want to rp this shy nerdy green blooded space elf.

Didn't know you were a fellow P&P RPG player! Which games have you played? Care to tell us about some character you have played or sharing a good adventure/anecdote?
Oh yeah, I’ve been a tabletop player for about twenty years now or so (or older depending on what you consider PBEM), and a GM for a little over 15. I’ve played plenty of systems.
I played 2e, 3e, and 3.5e Dungeons and Dragons, most of my games were Forgotten Realms, but the best games I’ve been in were either the GM’s own invented setting or Dark Sun, where our characters eventually killed Kalak, took control of Tyr, and engaged in détente with the other Sorcerer-Kings while trying to find a way to defeat the Dragon. Typically I play an elaborate plan type character with heavy points into bluff. My fellow player and DM in the World’s Largest Dungeon said that “this is exactly how Jim plays.”
I’ve played a lot of Shadowrun. I like the cyberpunk genre, and I gravitated to the role of the thief character when I could, with sniping and bombs. My favorite character is a combat engineer turned hitman who uses every dirty trick for wetwork, to the point where I actually had my own fellow players paranoid about tilted painted connected to shaped charges. Typically I played 3e or 4e Shadowrun, I haven’t been a fan of 5e Shadowrun.
I’ve played Exalted, but I’ve only played 2e. Really love the setting, though, lots to do in Creation. Solars are usually what’s available, usually I roll rather strongly on the heroic adventure type, doing my best to make my Flaw subtle but gradually increase it over the course of the story. I’ve had a lot of fun playing Sidereals to the point where I was actually told that I was banned from playing them, because I’m not allowed to have inherent bonuses for people believing my false identities. I’ve played some Lunars, I usually stick away from the beastman stuff and instead go really hard on the “getting mortals to stand up for themselves” route. I’ve only ever had one Dragon-Blooded game, where we went Brotherhood of the Peach Orchard to reform the dying Scarlet Empire.
I’ve never played Scion, I’ve only ever run Scion, but oh man, did I run an amazing game. Hopefully that doesn’t come off too conceited, but it was tabletop gaming at its finest, an enjoyable excursion with veteran and rookie players. I had a full eight-player game, where the players advanced one Legend per week, and the game ended with the rebirth of the cosmos when they rewrote the laws of the universe through theological argument.
I’ve played the core three systems from the Old World of Darkness. Vampire (scary bloodsuckers), Werewolf (fuzzy-wuzzy eco-terrorists), and Mage (a game of glorious madness) were all solid systems, even if White Wolf suffered from their inability to playtest or balance anything. Changeling: The Dreaming was a lot of fun, I had a blast playing an eshu who masqueraded as an anonymous superhero “Wandering Sky” with my friend who played a piskie samurai.
New World of Darkness, I’ve played Mage: The Awakening, and Changeling: The Lost. My best game was in college, where my friend Nate accidentally had a bear turn into a dog on TV and got Paradox’d into next week, earning him the forever nickname of “Mayor of Beartown.” My ST in that game said: “I like this game because I don’t need to do anything. You create and solve your own plots.” I’ve been wanting to play Promethean, never had the chance, because that’s a game that really lends itself well to single-player tabletop. I had another game that was interesting because it was essentially a Haruhi Suzumiya game, where the characters all played college students interested in the occult whereas I was their club sponsor, a wizard college professor who had to bail them out of their jams with liberal use of the Fortune sphere.
My longest running game that I’m currently in is a Deathwatch 40k game, where I’m a member of Kill-Team 82, a send-up to the 82nd All-American where we have nine players, one from each of the First Founding Chapters. I play an Imperial Fist Devastator Marine and specialize in siege warfare. That game is fun because in addition to the base forum thread where we go on adventures to save the Imperium of Man, we also have a thread where we just wax philosophically about our legions.
Paranoia is probably my favorite of the comedy genre, some fun Cold War slapstick made even better with liberal consumption of alcohol.
I try to enjoy games no matter the system, although sometimes it’s difficult to learn new systems. Some rules-light systems I’ve been with I had negative experiences with, like FATE where the game seemed to devolve into players continually trying to angle ways why each of their little advantages applied to give themselves bonuses on dice rolls. I also design a bunch of characters for other players who have difficulty crafting backstories, and I create parties for different games and universes in the event that I have the desire to write something in that universe, the latest of which was a seven-man party from the different City-States of Dark Sun.
Thanks for the question. Khef.

Years ago (early 2000s), I was a moderator on a now-closed message board fantasy role playing game, and was one of the world builders. I helped with the storyline, the map of the world, the characters and their powers. The story never took off & we never finished. I tried to access the forum to contact the others, but it's offline. I've had this story in my mind for years. It's such a great story. Would it be unethical to turn the storyline, the characters etc, into a novel and try to publish?
Disclaimer: We aren’t lawyers, nor do we play them on TV. None of this is to be considered legal advice. There are resources here you might want to check out in case you decide to keep going.
I am in a similar position. In the late 90s, I got involved in a user-created fantasy setting rpg where we … kids, you won’t believe this! … roleplayed by email. PBEM was life. We also created new worlds and everything was shared on a spiffy Geocities website!
I have 50,000 words of my storyline, serial numbers filed off, sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to sit down and edit it into something more novel-like and if nothing else, maybe self-publish it some day.
Is it ethical to return to this source material to write a new, possible sellable, work? That’s really up to you to work through. The real concern is whether you could be sued by one of your co-creators for using co-owned intellectual property.
OTOH, you have BNFs becoming bazillionaires writing fanfiction and just changing a few things from the source materials and Big Publishing Houses coming in, swooping them up and making any legal issues go away. Or not.
It’s a bit rockier if you self-publish and then someone from that board sees it and challenges you. This article here discusses issues of copyright and co-ownership. So does this one. And this one, too. And this.
Here are some things you should probably do:
Write the story. You can write whatever you want. The question is publishing it (which includes publishing for free online, including in another rp forum). Maybe you’ll decide not to finish the story, or in the mean time, be able to work out the issues with the other creators. (Why collaboration agreements are good things.)
Can you track down anyone from the forums by searching for the pages through the Wayback Machine? I was actually able to find stuff that didn’t get preserved in our Yahoo! group just to check and make sure my new names and locations and storylines weren’t exactly duplicating what we’d created back then.
Does that protect me if I choose to publish? I don’t know, and I would not self-publish it unless I could consult with a qualified copyright/IP attorney.

I've never rp'd before but ur blog makes me want to start. how?
Tumblr media
Ope. That's flattering!
I started RPing some... 24? ish? years ago. I started in notebooks, then went to AOL chat rooms, forums, PBeM, MSN and Yahoo... LiveJournal and even WoW. So, how I started to roleplay is very different than what is available today.
I had never roleplayed on Tumblr before when I decided to make this blog. Tumblr RP was something that didn't quite make sense to me, despite the fact that I have been using Tumblr off and on since 2012. It took some observation to understand how it worked and honestly I still feel like I haven't quite gotten the hang of it. In part because I struggle with a lot of the aesthetic formatting that's really common in the Roleplay Community (RPC). But that's an aside!
[CUT FOR LENGTH]
Tumblr media
When I started Hannibal, I made his blog and then searched "Hannibal RP" and started to follow people that were active in the RPC. Or, if they looked interesting. I binged Hannibal and wrote drabbles to get his voice back down since it had been since 2013 since I had written him, and since.... 2006? ish? Before that. Yikes. Anyways, I wanted to get the feel for writing him so I wrote drabbles and fics. After that, I jumped in and started to interact with the blogs I followed, plus ones that were starting to follow me.
One of the important things to remember about roleplay is that it is a lot like improv acting where you want to follow "yes, and..." If your partner is writing about it being a dreary night and having a headache, don't swing in talking about sunshine and how healthy they look. Build on what they've given you and always provide opportunity to respond.
John smith opened the door and greeted the woman on the other side. While he was in a bad mood, he still welcomed her in. 'How are you?'
is a better RP post than
The door was opened by John Smith. He looked outside, and there was no one to be seen. He closed his door again and went back to his computer. He was sullen.
The second one, besides having passive voice, isn't as good as an interaction because it doesn't leave room for someone else to respond --- easily. Theoretically, I suppose someone could send an email to John Smith. But the top one gives the other person roleplaying something to say and something to do. She can greet John, come inside, and answer his question -- and observe that he's in a bad mood.
You also want to avoid controlling someone else's character unless you have explicit permission. You never want to write what someone else's character is doing, thinking, or feeling. That's bad etiquette and takes away the fun of roleplaying! You're collaborating and part of the fun is not knowing exactly what the other character is going to do or say.
As an extension of that, you never want to hurt, maim, or kill another character without explicit permission from the other mun. To avoid doing this, I usually try to provide outs or ways that characters can avoid getting hurt. Instead of writing something like "Hannibal stabbed him" I write
The knife was like an extension of Hannibal's hand, wielded with the same practiced grace as a dancer. He slashed out at his intended prey, the blade slicing neatly through the air.
Again, opportunity to react and respond. The other player can decide whether or not that slash lands and how bad it is. You can be more specific than that, but this is an example. Usually if I am writing something like this, I talk to the mun first and ask what it is OK to do so that waiting for an OK to stab (lol) doesn't interrupt the flow of a post. When you get really used to writing with someone, you probably don't need to have these conversations as much, but it is still nice to check in.
When you're first starting to interact with someone, make sure you check out their rules and about pages. If they're OK with you reaching out and contacting them OOC (not all people are, for some it causes a lot of anxiety) then I would encourage you to do so and develop a rapport with them. Roleplay is a community effort so don't be afraid to build community when it is possible.
It is also a learning curve! But a fun one. Don't get discouraged if it feels like you're not getting somewhere or someone doesn't like you/your character. There's someone out there who absolutely will.
Hope that helped!
