On 8th November over 500 union members and workers took direct action as part of the international action against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This action by rank & file unionists in narrm / Melbourne is one of many taken by workers around the world in response to the call by The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), all major Palestinian workers unions and professional associations to workers worldwide: to boycott Israel and businesses that are complicit with its apartheid regime. In an international effort called #BlockTheBoat. Speakers at the action included APAN President Nasser Mashni, MUA Deputy Branch Secretary Dave Ball, representatives from Loud Jew Collective and Unionists for Palestine organisers Geraldine Fela and Mathew Abbott. Speakers spoke about the genocide, the involvment of Zim shipping, the complicity and support for Israel of Albanese, and most importantly the historic role of unions in ending Apartheid in South Africa and the need to build workers confidence and power today. The role of ZIM, the Israeli shipping line, in the development of the Israeli war machine has been relentless. It is a major transporter of weapons of mass destruction. Because of workers taking this action, two vessels have been delayed, with one ZIM vessel moving in a circle for over 11 hours in the strait between Melbourne and Tasmania. More than 5 trucks turned around within the first few hours from 5.30pm, and trucks remain backed up along the port entrance from 12am and continuing. Hundreds of unionists and supporters took action, some putting their bodies on the road in front of cargo trucks. In attendance were Palestinian workers, including a Doctor who spoke of his colleagues being killed in Gaza. In his words: “as workers, we have the power”. We reaffirm that ZIM should be unwelcome in every port where people stand against Israel’s genocide and war crimes. We will continue to send this message loud and clear to ZIM, Israel and Albanese, including this Saturday, when Palestine supporters from unions and the community will protest against ZIM at Port Botany in Sydney. We stand with workers of the world in solidarity with Palestinians, for an end to Israel’s genocide, to demand justice and for a Free Palestine in our lifetime.

Thousands of Palestinian labourers were stranded on the Israeli side, far from their families and with no source of income. Their work permits were revoked, leaving their lives in flux. It is a familiar pattern for Palestinians: displacement, dispossession and uncertainty.

‘Some are missing, some are stranded, some have been arrested, and others have been deported to the West Bank,’ explains Shaher Saed, General Secretary of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU). Saed and his colleagues in Ramallah spent last week attempting to support Palestinians from Gaza who have been estranged from their families, made homeless and internally displaced yet again.

Workers’ organizations responded to the appeal of the Palestinian union federation as news of the horrendous Israeli massacre and courageous Palestinian defense circled the globe.

Protests took place in Italy, Greece, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. The appeal was answered forcefully in the Port of Oakland, Calif., site of the most successful labor action to date against the atrocities in Gaza.

Fuel Shortage Due to Israeli Blockade Puts Thousands of Lives at Risk in Gaza

Five hospitals could close within a few hours due to lack of electricity. (Peoples Dispatch) An imminent fuel shortage in Gaza could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe for almost two million Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, Gaza’s health ministry warned on Saturday. It appealed to the international community for urgent help in order to resolve the crisis and get the necessary fuel delivered, so that hospitals in Gaza, including the children’s facility, have electricity to continue operating. Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman of Gaza’s health ministry, said on Saturday, “Hundreds of patients at Gaza hospitals will be facing an unknown fate when their electric generators shut down due to the fuel crisis.” He noted that the fuel consumption had increased due to cold weather and the increasingly frequent electricity cuts, which reduced hospitals’ stocks of fuel to 17%. He added that five of Gaza’s hospitals would stop operating within a few hours due to lack of fuel. These include the Al-Nasr hospital for children, the Al-Rantisi hospital for children and the Abu Yusif Al Najjar hospital. On Thursday, the ministry announced the stopping of services in the Beit Hanoun hospital, resulting in approximately 340,000 people being unable to receive treatment, surgical procedures and laboratory services, along with services in the emergency care department getting adversely affected. Palestinian human rights group, Al-Mezan, also warned that the fuel shortage will have “dangerous repercussions” for 800 kidney patients on dialysis care as 128 dialysis machines will stop working without electricity. Use of diagnostic devices and scheduling of surgical operations will also be rendered difficult. Close to 45 children are admitted for kidney problems at Al-Rantisi hospital, and more than a hundred other children are being looked after in various nurseries in Gaza. Close to 35,000 liters of Qatar-funded fuel was delivered to Gaza in October, which significantly improved the electricity situation in Gaza, with Gazans receiving electricity for up to 11 hours per day. But this supply was supposed to last only for six months. The health ministry had warned this week that fuel stocks for the power plant in Gaza, and for running generators, are rapidly decreasing. But for the second week in a row, Israel refused to allow a new installment of Qatari monetary aid into Gaza. Apart from the fuel crisis, this has resulted in the public sector employees of Gaza, who are on Hamas payroll, not receiving their salaries. Qatar had earlier agreed to pay USD 15 million, over six months, to facilitate the payment of salaries of the public sector workers. While stressing that all humanitarian, as well as other crises in the Gaza strip, emanate from the Israeli occupation and blockade, Al-Mezan said that the Palestinian authorities must also work towards improving the situation in terms of fuel management and the healthcare services. In 2017, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas had stopped the Palestinian Authority (PA) funding for fuel supplies for the Gaza strip in an attempt to put pressure on Hamas, the bitter rival of Abbas’ Fatah party, which rules over the occupied West Bank. The two Palestinian parties have been involved in a feud since 2007, when Hamas took control of Gaza and expelled the Fatah from the strip.  The three subsequent Israeli invasions have wreaked havoc on Gaza’s infrastructure, destroying even the civilian infrastructure which is vital for sustaining normal human life and humanitarian services such as health care, food and medicines. In another development, the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions (PGFTU) recently stated that the poverty rate in Gaza has crossed 80%. PGFTU also raised alarm about the fact that besides the poverty levels, the unemployment rate has also increased to an unprecedented 54.9%, a sign of the rapidly declining economic situation in Gaza. The federation said that the Israeli occupation is responsible for the deterioration of the economy in Gaza, which has forced the people to live and survive in extreme, inhuman conditions. The federation also called upon the Palestinian authority to lift the sanctions that it has imposed on the Gaza strip as part of its ongoing feud with Hamas so that emergency relief and development projects can be undertaken to provide the much needed relief to workers in Gaza. It also urged Egypt to re-open the Rafah border crossing to allow the entry of essential commodities into Gaza, and appealed to the international community for help in reducing poverty and unemployment levels.   Read the full article

 KUDÜS KARDEŞLİĞİN VE DİRENİŞİN BAŞKENTİDİR!

ABD Başkanı Trump’ın Kudüs’ü İsrail’in başkenti olarak tanıyacağını duyurması geniş kesimlerin tepkisini çekti. Dünya genelinde Filistinliler öfkelerini sokak eylemleriyle gösterirken barış ve çözüm yanlısı Museviler bu açıklamanın yangına körükle gitmek olduğunu söylediler. ABD’nin amacı Ortadoğu’da sürmekte olan savaş ve çatışmaları yaygınlaştırmak, istikrasızlığı derinleştirmektir.

Konu uluslararası sendikal hareketin de gündemine gelmiştir. Arap Sendikalar Konfederasyonu (ATUC) Genel Sekreteri Mustafa Tlili yaptığı açıklamasında Trump’ın büyükelçiliği taşıma planını kınarken bu adımın “Filistinlilere yönelik şiddeti ve işgali meşrulaştırdığını, ırkçı bir din devletini güçlendirdiğini” ifade etmiştir. Kudüs’ün Filistin’in başkenti olduğunu belirten Filistin Sendikalar Konfederasyonu (PGFTU) ise bağımsız ve egemen bir Filistin Devleti’nin kurulması için dünya sendikalarına destek çağrısı yapmış, ABD’nin uluslararası sözleşmelere uyması gerektiğini hatırlatmıştır.

Kudüs, yüzyıllardır çok kültürlülüğün ve çok sesliliğin başkenti olmuştur. Farklı milletlerden ve farklı inançlardan halklar burada birlikte yaşamıştır, yaşamaktadır. Uluslararası Sendikalar Konfederasyonu’nun (ITUC) belirttiği gibi “ABD’nin pervasızca açıklamaları bölgedeki barış sürecine zarar vermektedir.”

Kudüs, aynı zamanda direnişin başkentidir. Filistin halkı on yıllardır bütün dünyanın gözü önünde zulme, baskıya ve ayrımcılıklara direnmektedir. Türkiye halkı, emeğiyle geçinen onuruyla yaşayan işçiler her zaman olduğu gibi bugün de Filistin halkının yanındandır.

Filistin direnişe destek olmak isteyenler öncelikle kendi memleketlerindeki zulümlere direnmelidir. Taşeronlaşmaya karşı çıkan işçiler, hukuksuz ihraçlara karşı mücadele veren kamu emekçileri, şiddete ve tacize hayır diyen kadınlar, gerçekleri yazdığı için tutuklanan gazeteciler, barış isteyen akademisyenler, ırmağına, ormanına ve kentine sahip çıkanlar… Hepimiz Filistinliyiz, Hepimiz İsrail’e karşı direnişin bir parçasıyız.

Filistin Direnişi bir turnusol kâğıdı görevi görmektedir. Bir yandan İsrail ile ticaret yapan çevreler diğer yandan İsrail protestoları düzenlemektedir. Onlar kurtla kuzuyu yiyip çobanla ağlayanlardır. Türkiye’de devam eden OHAL İsrail politikalarını hatırlatmaktadır kendi vatandaşlarına zulüm ve ayrımcılık uygulayanlar Filistin halkının gerçek dostu olmazlar.

AKP hükümeti Kudüs’ü İsrail’in başkenti olarak tanıyan anlaşmalara çok önceden imza atmıştır. AKP hükümeti İsrail ile çok sayıda ticari, askeri ve teknolojik ortaklık yürütmektedir. Filistin halkına destek vermek için atılacak ilk adım İsrail ile bütün ticari, askeri ve kültürel ilişkileri kesmektir.

DİSK olarak farklı millet ve inançlardan işçilerin bir arada özgürce yaşayabileceği bağımsız, demokratik ve laik Filistin’e olan özlemimizi hatırlatarak başta Filistin Sendikalar Konfederasyonu olmak üzere Filistin halkıyla dostluğumuzu geliştireceğimiz bir kez daha ilan ederiz.

ILO Konferansı Cenevre’de toplandı

187 ülkeden işçi, işveren ve hükümet temsilcilerinin katıldığı 106. Uluslararası Çalışma Konferansı 5-16 Haziran 2017 tarihlerinde İsviçre’nin Cenevre kentinde düzenleniyor.

Birleşmiş Milletler Genel Kurul Salonu’nda Uruguay Cumhurbaşkanı Tabare Vazquez’in açılış konuşmasıyla başlayan konferansa DİSK adına Genel Başkan Kani Beko ve Uluslararası İlişkiler Müdürü Kıvanç Eliaçık katılıyor.

Yıllık olarak düzenlenen konferansta ILO’nun idari gündemlerinin yanı sıra dünya genelinde çalışma koşulları ve iş hayatının sorunları ele alınıyor. Bu yıla özel tartışma başlıkları arasında “emek göçü”, “savaş ve çatışma bölgelerinde çalışma koşulları”, “kadın işçilerin çalışma koşulları” gibi konular yer alıyor. “İşyerinde temel hakları korumak için stratejik hedefler” başlıklı hazırlıkların yanı sıra 2008 yılında yayımlanan “Adil bir Küreselleşme İçin Sosyal Adalet” başlıklı ILO Bildirgesi’nin uygulama alanları inceleniyor. Ayrıca ilgili komiteler mültecilere ve göçmenlere yönelik politikaların oluşturulmasında sendikaların ve işveren örgütlerinin etkisinin artırılması için görüşmeler yapıyor.

“12 Haziran Çocuk İşçilikle Mücadele Günü” kapsamında “Kriz ve Afet Dönemlerinde Çocukları Korumak” başlıklı özel bir etkinlik düzenlendi. DİSK Genel Başkanı Kani Beko bu kapsamda bir açıklama yaparak hükümetleri “çocuk işçiliğini durdurmaya ve savaş bölgelerinde çocukları korumaya” çağırdı.

Çalışma ve Sosyal Güvenlik Bakanı Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, Türk-İş Genel Başkanı Ergün Atalay ve TİSK Genel Başkanı Kudret Önen, Genel Kurul’da birer konuşma yaptı. ILO Konferansı vesilesiyle Cenevre’deki Türkiye konsolosluğunda bir araya gelen Konfederasyon genel başkanları İstanbul’da yapılması planlanan ILO bölge toplantısı hakkında fikir alışverişinde bulundular.

Bu yıl şeffaflık ilkesi çerçevesinde konferansa özel cep telefonu ve bilgisayar uygulamaları hazırladı. Toplantılar internetten canlı yayınlanıyor ve bütün evraklar dijital olarak delegelerin erişimine sunuluyor.

“Uluslararası Standartların Uygulanması Komitesi’nin (Aplikasyon Komitesi) 10 Haziran 2017 tarihli oturumunda Türkiye’nin de içinde bulunduğu ülkeler gündeme alındı. Türkiye 135 Sayılı ILO Sözleşmesini (İşyerlerinde işçi temsilcilerinin korunması ve onlara sağlanacak kolaylıklara ilişkin sözleşme) ihlal ettiği için incelendi. Bu toplantıda ITUC delegasyonu adına söz alan KESK Eş Genel Başkanı Şaziye Köse “OHAL ve KHK’lar nedeniyle yaşanan hak ihlallerine dikkat çekti. Mevcut iş kanunun, ILO sözleşmelerinin ve zaman zaman yaşam hakkının ihlal edildiğini” ifade etti. Toplantıda söz alan uluslararası sendikal örgütler “adalete erişim ve adil yargılama hakkı ihlalleri”, “grev yasakları”, “işten atılan ve tutuklanan işçilerin durumu” gibi konuları gündeme getirdiler.

DİSK Genel Başkanı Kani Beko konferans kapsamında Çin (ACFTU), Rusya (FNPR), Brezilya (CUT), Almanya (DGB) , Fransa (CGT), Norveç (LO), Afganistan (UMKA), Japonya (RENGO), Güney Kore (KCTU) ve Filistin (PGFTU) ülkelerinden sendikaların heyetleriyle görüşmeler gerçekleştirdi. Beko ayrıca Birleşmiş Milletler önünde düzenlenen “Brezilya işçi sınıfa” destek mitingine katıldı.
