Pia Männikkö
Männikkö's "Déjà Vu" series is a collection of works created by hand-painting ink onto tulle fabric.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm currently interested in the concept of the body as a series of movements, so this is a cool way to see it documented. The figures are also kind of ghost-like, which ties into my interest in movement as a kind of haunting. I think using tulle, a light fabric that moves with even a small draft, is a really effective material for this.
Tumblr media
For this installation I took photographs of four artists. The silhouettes, which I paint in life-size, hang from the ceiling in four sequences; people can walk around and through the sequences and view the installation from different angles. Air draft makes the light fabrics move, which emphasizes the sense of movement in the images.

Interval research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helsinki-based artist Pia Mnnikk observes and recreates physical paths of the human form, depicting small intervals of movement within a space, in her Dj Vu series. Using tulle fabric and ink, the artist presents a series of ghostly silhouettes cutting through different rooms, as though each flowing panel is a moment frozen in time. Altogether, each site-specific installation exhibits the trail of one man moving from point A to point B.

I’m not sure if this artwork correctly highlights interval. This artwork is site-specific

Pia Mnnikk
Tumblr media
Artist Pia Mnnikk is interested in the idea of our bodily presence within a space. Her work Time Mapping Installation Reveals Human Movement investigates how humans move through spaces. Mnnikk recreates the movements of people moving through a space “using tulle fabric and ink, the artists represents a series of ghostly silhouettes cutting through different rooms, as though each flowing panel is a moment frozen in time” (Time Mapping Installation Reveals Human Movement). The exhibition allows participants to understand their path from A to B and how their bodies interact and flow through the physical space of the rooms. Mnnikks hopes for doing this is to allow people to understand their engagement with physical space. We don’t tend to leave footprints wherever go so we can never fully see how our bodies interact with spaces but her installation allows us to do so. We shouldn’t be restricted to the concept that memory is internal, memory has much more to do with the body and how we move about this space and interact with materials.  Body memory is a situated body that interacts with the material world.

Light Source
Step Three:
This was the effect it had on the overall outlook of the acetate sheets. I personally believe it creates that eerie look that was apparent within Pia Mannikko’s illustrations.
Tumblr media
Step Two:
I then fed through the LED light strip through the hole and stuck it down using masking tape to ensure that it remained in that spot.
Tumblr media
Step One:
I created two holes at the back of the box as this would enable me to feed through the light source and have it projecting from the back of the acetate sheets.

Pia Mnnikk - Dj Vu
Time Mapping Installation Reveals Human Movement
“Normally, physical footprints aren’t left behind everywhere we walk, so it can be difficult to know the precise areas our bodies have inhabited, but Mnnikk’s creations give us a better idea of the human body’s movement and physical space capacity. They allow us to contemplate how often we retrace our steps without even realizing it.”
Even though this installation has nothing to do with crime and is more to do with human movement in general, I think I could use this installation in my exhibition. The setting of the exhibition would be dark and only highlighting the exhibition pieces using light, this piece could add to the feeling of being watched/ stalked around the exhibition; creating a sense of uneasy.
