iii Points 2019- Friday Review
Tumblr media
The Miami music festival continues to live up to it’s reputation, and brings new life to Wynwood
Miami- Here, amidst the shadows of sunset lined warehouses and graffiti adorned walls, a Big Bang has happened. It’s quiet, occurring from underneath the worn parking lot concrete and pitched up tents but it’s present.
At a little after 8pm on this Friday night, the Wynwood art district has started it’s download of becoming a temporary supernova. There are entire worlds, planets, galaxies that would make HAL weep in digital tears. Or maybe, it’s always been here, refined and waiting underneath the cultural hotbed that is this city and it took a festival like iii Points 6 years to finally find it’s rightful home.
Tumblr media
Previously having been everywhere from Bayfront Park in the popular heart to the city and before that, the blocks of Art Basel in it’s first humble origins, the Wynwood Art District venue is the result of a move from the city, as well as a new date and in truth, it feels as if it’s always been here.
It’s a playground for every one of the senses, not just enveloping you in the air and atmosphere of the impressively curated scheduling for the artists this weekend but making you believe that, wherever in this temporary galaxy you find yourself in, you are immersed.
Tumblr media
The Boiler Room stage, bearing DJ selection that could arguably give Ultra a run for it’s money, the club is the Hacienda on steroids. It is a small warehouse space, flashing in red, blue and white strobes that somehow bears that unique club scent that is only found in the corners of your mind’s nostalgia or the best of hidden places. Friday’s opening night was just a warm-up, but the Disco Halal hosts did not disappoint, with acts such as Bakke and Will Buck spinning a wonderful groove with eyes projected onto floating moon statues in the corner. Just behind it’s doors, Sector 3, the open stage closed off from MindMelt by just a few industrial crates carried the rock and obscure; Miami’s Otto Von Scirach’s stage energetic stage performance consisting of the frontman wearing nothing but name adorned briefs, as a man in a rubber suit, drag queens, an astronaut and mirror outfitted dancers all join into the stage party.
Tumblr media
And as strange as it sounds against smooth headliners such as Beach House or the quiet volcano such as Tyler, The Creator, nothing throughout the duration of the festival ever seems out of place. It is the encapsulation of 90′s New York, Chicago during the trance music renaissance, Madchester and yet still at it’s core, pure Miami.
Before Beach House’s set, should you venture over to the southern end and find yourself gliding across the smooth floors of Skate Space, with artist Haiiileeen’s light structure being the center of selfie attention, you’ll find yourself illuminated by the projections of various strobing images and artist and DJ alike in an elevated cylindrical podium looking above it all like a strange creator.
Tumblr media
And it’s that spirit that makes iii Points so inherently unique.
It takes the known decadence of the city, such as Fooq’s dinner and a show addition of a 3 course Mediterranean dinner perched high enough to see the MindMelt Main Stage, and forces it into the artist’s den; into the Fantasia like silhouette projections of Beach House as they opened with “Dark Spring“, taking everyone into the ambiance. It’s a smooth, crisp performance, narrated perfectly by the duo’s humble synchronicity; leader Victoria Legrand’s dream inducing vocals and Alex Scally’s perfect ability to carry both her and the melody along for this starry adventure.
Tumblr media
Or the intensity of the city with closing headliner Tyler, The Creator; adorned in his signature angler hat and shorts all the while carrying a fire that only few have managed. Further proof that his origin, the rap collaborative Odd Future  which has born some of the most known names in recent hip-hop history, was truly a powerhouse. And it is what the frontman projects, playing “Where This Flower Blooms“ to a captivated crowd in what, for all intents and purposes, is a parking lot with a crane, carrying a giant disco ball. And though this all should seem strange, it isn’t. Far from it, the atmosphere in this temporary galactic bubble is so potent that it’s transformative as the music that hovers all in the air.
Tumblr media
Should you prefer that hidden beauty that was mentioned earlier, Main Frame, the air conditioned indoor warehouse venue that is what the Hacienda might have been would New Order have started in Miami (which, is an interesting thought to think of), had everything to offer. From Toro Y Moi’s packed DJ set to performer and lightplay artists, Nonotak’s captivating synchronicity of light choreography in their performance of “Eclipse” and the pulsing echoes of EDM.
Tumblr media
And if all that was not enough, if these vast worlds just didn’t capture your fancy enough, once again Sector 3 comes back into play with performance artist Poorgrrrl playing a set that was a strange as it was unexplainable: featuring banging on a construction sign, wardrobe changes on stage and what can only be described as a twerking orgy simulation to close out the night.
Tumblr media
Odd and captivating as it was, with no one being able to look or walk away from the performance, it still did not steal the limelight from the quiet headliners of the night, Pussy Riot.
The political and punk group has had it’s share of headlines, mostly in protest of the quiet and gripping power of their Russian home government; gaining a large portion of their notoriety from the wrongful imprisonment of members Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, prompting a hunger strike from the members who were also being held from their children.
Tumblr media
And that passion; that unending fight against what should never be accepted as normal, is more than just present in Pussy Riot’s music, it’s what makes up their entire set. Arriving in white ski-mask, frontwoman Tolokonnikova is joined by Russian government costumed dancers wearing the same mask against an entrancing, pounding and occasionally violent beats like “PRIZN“ before sliding into a smoother track, with yet equally as much bite, and Tolokonnikova taking off her mask, following a video displayed message that ironically was unable to be captured by our cameras. The basis of which stated that the collaborative are still under the ever watching eye of their motherland, and that quiet protests still must be approved by the dictatorship that is still silently acknowledged in fear; and that though new music is coming, due to the content being against the government, they will most likely be once again, imprisoned. But that they still would not stop.
Tumblr media
It’s a powerful and intense note to continue playing to. In this turbulent political environment which grows more and more closer to satire publication The Onion becoming an actual news outlet due to the rapidly growing sad brevity of the news, it’s all you can do. Refusal to accept the restricted; to continue the challenge the unjust, the wrong and the tired challenge that comes with fighting it. This war never ends, and it isn’t won or finished with bombs or firearms but art in the form of Molotov cocktails of graffiti, performance art and performances.
Tumblr media
The revolution will still not be televised, but it will be experienced. And it’s something that gratefully, Miami is once again becoming the home for.

DITHER is an unconventional stage debuting at III POINTS Festival 2017. Featuring a predominantly local line up, DITHER challenges the expectations and perception of performance by offering the audience atypical vantage points to view, hear, and experience. In a time of instant gratification and over processed entertainment, DITHER instead focuses on artistic cultivation by embracing experimentation and innovation over perfection and complacency. DITHER disassembles the vertical hierarchy of expression, and instead takes a horizontal approach to programming. There is no headliner. Dither is curated by Tara Long and designed by Andrew Byrd. The performances will be streamed live via Jolt Radio and will feature a special Friday night party hosted by Internet Friends.

Hilo Miami! I have decided to reappropriate this blog by changing the "L.A." to "la" ok? This is now "La Un Zine, Miyami Style" or whatever we'll see but Miami has been pretty fresh lately. I had the wild privledge of being part of the Tatsuya Nakatani Gong Orchestra this past week with 14 of Miami's finest musicians. I recognized all of them from not only various exceptional local bands but also from some of the toughest and most necessary cultural community work. Also all but 2 were women. The only criteria should have been to be the best drummer in town you say? I overheard someone say something like this and add "like what's a popular rapper doing up there?". Well I was very inspired to answer this question by the end of the night. I saw this rapper they were referring to, Tara Long AKA Poorgrrrl (who has never referred to herself as a rapper btw) take on the biggest gong of all and go from 0 to hero with dat shit. We we're all sweating and struggling with it I'd say just about equally. Afterall, Tatsuya pretty much invented how to play gongs with bows so there is no way anyone who hadn't already learned it from him had any real clue...But damn Tara!!! Killled it with the bass gong. You can totally assume this kind of commitment to a dope and sincerely unique experience from listening to Poorgrrrl, where she destroys the structures of most rap and hip hop music ever by creating a new landscape by alternating between talking and singing and ranting into trances that keep you close and the words and intentions brutally clear the entire time. It's very bold to say the least and you know what else is? Being a woman anywhere in or around the Miami music scene today. Here are the things most local dude bands typically have to worry about: -Making a lot of money at their jobs -Finding the right marketing company to make them look hot -Not making toooo much an ass of themselves in front of club personel where they will seek shows to get on -Not making music that's too gay, but if it is you might be invited to play drag night. Here are some things women musicians in the Miami have to worry about: -Being shorted, swindled and degraded by the typical promoter or bar owner -Reinforncing gender roles with your musical style (especially for larger or family friendly audiences) -Sexual Harrasment -Never showing weakness -Having anywhere to play they haven't experienced some sort of harrasment that no one did anything about -Emphasizing your demand for respect by showing extra class and stern looks -Going out like this quite often so that you can even get the chance to talk to these bookers, promoters ect -Knowing any bookers here who won't forever think of you as a nice little opener because you are little different, no matter how many tours you go on or how much progress you make in every other city -Often, like in the case of Tara and myself, having to run your OWN space where you have to worry about paying the rent, cleaning a large space fullof rowdy individuals, and not gettign arrested (Tara does in fact do all of this on top of hosting of the best underground touring artists at her spot). -Often resulting to promoting yourself, as well as touring acts that may not mean anything to anyone down here on the isolated island of Miami (comes with an extra side of being a great flyer artist, review writer and friendly, popular community leader NBD!) -Working your ass off at your jobs (where you probably deal with more harrasment) to make sure you have plenty of money to deal with such aspects like recording and distributing your music, booking your tours and all this properly and without any funny business but of course, if you have to deal with a dude and he's attracted to you, your doomed for heavy and completely regretful experience regardless. -Looking good on camera or if not being an easy target for ridicule -Probably making evverything else on your own, merch, logos, music videos, album art, because no "favor" is ever truly free -And then after doing alll of this yourself, even the men you do work with closely who see you working so hard everyday, when seeing you finally succeed in anything ask "How'd you do it?" or "Who'd you hire?". -Overall taking annnyy opportunity ever is actually offered to you, no matter how far off from your goal, and rockin the shit out of it so maybe one of lo big bois watching won't ignore your booking request next time. So yea.. She showed them! But I wanted to write about it anyway cuz it was, as Rat Bastard (the only man trusted by Tatsuya to arrange this 15 person orchestra) would say "CLASSIC". And i'm feeling really grateful for her today.. and Rat and the other badass women ripped that gong challenge, and of course Rat for knowing what's up. Join us for a day of interdisciplinary performance at PAMM focused around the group exhibition MY BODY, MY RULES, organized by PAMM Associate Curator Jennifer Inacio. The performances will highlight four artists' interpretation and expansion of exhibition themes that include women's authority, power over their own experiences, and mainstream ideals imposed on the image of the female body while highlighting the power of various performance formats to make this message clear. Artists Yanira Collado, Coralina Rodriguez Meyer, Sandra Vivas, and Poorgrrrl will present performances, activations, and video throughout the day.
Schedule of Events

Side A by Poorgrrrl A song about longing and missed opportunities Side-A is performed and recorded LIVE for this video. The studio recording can only be found on vinyl through Miami-based [NAME] Publications. Performed live by Tara Long and directed by Cristine Brache, the video is an unraveling of fetishized feminine narratives as depicted in mainstream media. An early gameshow rewarding the most pitiful story, a race for the best consumer, and a crooning mistress from what seems like another time come together in a dreamy montage revealing both the familiarity and toxicity of nostalgic notions of what it means or looks like to be 'a woman'.
Performed live. Studio version available through [NAME] Publications, Miami, FL.
Written and performed live by Tara Long & Andrew Byrd Directed and edited | Cristine Brache Produced by | Tara Long & Submerged Director of Photography | Cristine Brache Camera 2 | Brian Deutzman Camera 3 | Alex Markow Wardrobe | Lucy Burrows Makeup | Tonee Alexis
