Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023: Paying Tribute to India's Hero, Captain Vikram Batra

Kargil Vijay Diwas is a day that stands as a powerful reminder of the unwavering courage and strength exhibited by the Indian soldiers who bravely fought in the challenging and harsh terrain of Ladakh's Kargil region 24 years ago. This 60-day Indo-Pak war against Pakistani infiltrators in 1999 remains a proud moment for all Indians, a time to hold their heads high and celebrate the triumph of their valiant Army.

The history of the Kargil war dates back to 1999 when the Indian Army launched 'Operation Vijay' in response to Pakistani troops intruding into Indian territory in the Kargil district on May 3. During this intense conflict, 674 Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice, and 1363 others were wounded. These brave hearts displayed the epitome of sacrifice for their motherland, showcasing the adage, 'Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori' (It is sweet and proper to die for one's country).

Among the many heroes, one name remains synonymous with gallantry - 24-year-old Captain Vikram Batra, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest battlefield heroism honor.

Captain Batra, born in Himachal Pradesh's Palampur in 1996, joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, where he trained for the armed forces. He served with the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles' 13th battalion, the same regiment that engaged in fierce combat with Pakistani infiltrators along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil.

Known by the codename "Shershah," Captain Batra achieved a remarkable feat during his most challenging mission - the seizure of Point 4875, securing a decisive victory for the Indian armed forces.

Beyond Shershah, Captain Batra is celebrated as the "Tiger of Drass," the "Kargil Hero," and the "Lion of Kargil." His fellow soldiers recount tales of his bravery and courage during battle, with reports of him taking down at least four Pakistani soldiers.

Tragically, Captain Batra lost his life in action while attempting to rescue another injured officer, Lieutenant Naveen Anaberu, during an explosion.

The Kargil war saw several other brave hearts like Lieutenant Balwan Singh, the youngest Param Vir Chakra laureate, Yogendra Singh Yadav, Lieutenant Manoj Pandey, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, Lieutenant Keishing Clifford Nongrum, Major Vivek Gupta, Captain Kenguruse, Major Saurabh Kalia, and Naik Digendra Kumar, who displayed extraordinary valor and dedication to the nation.

Dr. Tej Partap, Former Vice-Chancellor SKUAST-K visited Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura Campus on 26th June 2023. Dr. Partap is an internationally renowned policy and strategy expert of mountain farming affairs, mountain agriculture and organic agriculture development strategies. He is currently serving as Chairman of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) committee set up for the implementation of NEP-2020 in agricultural universities and heads the 6th Deans Committee for modification of farm education curriculums as per the new education policy. A breakthrough leader, Prof. Partap carries with him a long experience of institutional leadership at national and international level particularly as Vice Chancellor of CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur for two terms; Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences & Technology-Kashmir ; G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar and APG Shimla University, Shimla for one term each. At international level, he served as Programme Leader at Mountain Agriculture Division, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu. Dr. Tej Partap delivered a special lecture on “Motivational cum Mentoring Session” at the Conference Hall of Faculty. All the Heads of divisions, Scientists and more than 50 UG/PG students attended the lecture. The lecture was organized by the Career Counseling & Placement Cell (CC&PC) Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura under World Bank-ICAR funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) for the institutional development of SKUAST-K. In his lecture, Dr. Partap discussed some of the key challenges facing Indian agriculture today include, small and fragmented landholdings, climate change, lack of agricultural marketing and remunerative income. Despite the myriad of problems that farmers face, there are a number of ways that farmers can avoid or at least minimize their impact. While technology is an obvious one, there are also solutions which are already available to the farmer. Some are: Organization of Farmer Clubs, Introduction of modern farming technology, increasing trends of crop diversification towards horticulture & cash crops, diversifying and expanding the area of niche crops, organic farming for safer inputs to produce safer foods in order to maintain health of ecosystem. He emphasized on the scientists to prioritize their research methodologies on emerging trends of food safety, habitat engineering, nanotechnology and submit multi-disciplinary research projects. Dr. Partap advised the students to keep overcoming all the challenges, converting adversities into opportunities and motivate other students to focus on outcome based education and come up with Research based technologies. He also advised students to create positive mindset. If you start thinking positively then automatically positive vibes start attracting you. Adding that positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve health. Prof. Raihana H. Kanth, Dean Faculty of Agriculture presented the vote of thanks.
