We are living in a moment of serious gender revanchism in the United States. Feminists who self-define as “gender critical” and are otherwise openly transphobic will object to the comparison, but it is striking how much the movement to criminalize gender-affirming care for young people shares with the movement to criminalize abortion. Both find their fiercest champions in white, religious, conservative men who dismiss the evidence put forward by medical professionals that the treatment in question saves lives. Both claim to speak on behalf of silenced “children,” be they conveniently unborn or too young to be taken at their word. Both struggled to find widespread support until a father took his crusade on the road: abortion was not “an Evangelical issue” before Dr. Francis Schaeffer, a charismatic pastor, promoted his son Frank’s 1979 anti-abortion film Whatever Happened to the Human Race?; and anti-trans legislation was initially “hard to sell,” according to the Texas Tribune, until a North Texas dad named Jeff Younger built a sympathetic following online by accusing his ex-wife, a pediatrician, of wanting to “chemically castrate” their trans daughter. Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s order that citizens report parents of transgender kids to the authorities so that they can be investigated for child abuse echoes the section in SB 8 that rewards vigilante citizens for reporting abortion providers to authorities. Both movements have become central to the Republican Party’s strategy to raise funds and win elections. Not least, both movements have forced pregnant and trans people to prove, in preordained terms, their absolute certainty that they need the treatment they say they do. As the opposition puts up resistance in the form of misinformation, mandatory waiting periods, sonograms, and extensive psychological testing, patients lose precious time as hormonal processes they hope to forestall come closer and closer to transforming their bodies.
The experience of gender dysphoria is not identical to the experience of forced pregnancy, but it should not have to be for us to defend one another’s right to bodily autonomy as if it were our own. To respond to the heartbreak of losing Roe by further scapegoating trans people, as some cisgender feminists have done, is not only an unnecessary cruelty but a logical and political error that none of us can afford to make. There is no evidence to support the claim that inclusive language in reproductive health spaces “erases” or “harms” cis women, as Pamela Paul recently argued in the New York Times. (If anything, terms like pregnant people are more precise, as not all women are capable of pregnancy and not all pregnant people — e.g., cisgender girls under 18 — are women.) To say so anyway, with no basis in fact, is to do the far right’s work for them.

* Addy and Allen are excluded since their lives were in the hands of William
* Even though Debbie needed William’s help, she had a chance to save herself when it was revealed William had her key
* All the shotgun carousel victims are excluded since their lives were in the hands of William
* Pamela Jenkins is excluded since she really had no “game”, aside from pleading for her brother’s case
* Okay, I’ll make a one-time exception for Tara and Brent. Even though they weren’t in danger of dying, they still were given a game, albeit more for morality reasons.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Beulah Burkhart (born September 24, 1961), the Familial Lore...
Jackie is the daughter of John "Jack" Charles Burkhart Jr (born 1920) and Pamela "Pam" DuBois (born 1938). Yeah, there's a major age gap, and Jack is easily old enough to be Pam's father.
Pam comes from Madison, a sheltered only child, but went to college to Milwaukee. With the intent of finding a husband. She dates Dean the eventual fireman for awhile, who hails from Point Place, but meets Jack while she's there. And although she does love him, she mostly sees dollar signs. And after college graduation in 1960, with a business degree in hand, they marry. A year later, Jackie is born.
*****
Her Father:
John "Jack" Charles Burkhart Jr (born 1920): The youngest child of John Sr and his wife Emma. His father is a foolish scoundrel, and he takes after his far more seemingly calculating mother. Well, mostly. Him writing his classmates' papers got him kicked out of law school in New York, and he's more than willing to skirt around the rules to get his way.
Her Father's Roots:
Her father has German, Dutch, and English roots...
John Charles Burkhart Sr (1882-1929): The Burkhart name was anglicized from the German surname Burkhardt by his ancestors, who typically intermingled with German, Dutch, and English stock. He's firmly old money, from the northeast. He's a desperate party boy, a reckless schemer, who is willing to marry down...
Emma Grace Cowell (1885-1980): Her family is firmly new money, finding success with a string of department stores (called Cowell's) in northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin. She was previously married to a lowly store clerk named Thomas Dunne, which outraged her father, who died of pneumonia in 1911. He fathered her first daughter, Sarah, who is Jack's only notable ally (along with her son Charlie) following his arrest in 1978.
His Siblings:
Sarah Louisa Abbott (nee Dunne) (1907-1988): Jack's half sister, from their mother's first marriage. She's a loving social butterfly, and she treats Jack almost like a son. Her son Charlie (Carla's father) and Jack are almost like brothers.
Lillian Grace Croft (nee Burkhart) (born 1913): Jack's quiet but calculating older sister. She's more than willing to adhere to the rules of high society, and one of her daughters Corinne is notorious for doing the same.
Extra:
Emma's sister Julia married into the Morgan family, and the Morgan family helped bring the Burkhart family to Point Place. So, Buddy and Jackie are not so distant cousins (second cousins once removed).
*****
Her Mother/Her Mother's Roots:
Pamela "Pam" Anne DuBois (formerly Burkhart) (born 1938): The spoiled rotten child of two Canadians, one French and one English. Her parents, Philippe and Annie, moved to the states during the Great Depression.
Her mother Annie and her grandmother Flora run an alterations shop, but Pam doesn't share much of their enthusiasm. She deserves to be more than a measly seamstress, and her dad's government job in Madison is boring. Cutthroat yet considering the ways of the day, she goes to school to find love. And finds love, and love for the cutthroat world of real estate. The latter of which distracts her from her miserable personal life, along with the copious amounts of alcohol. Until her whole world explodes.
More context:
There's this whole other plot point where Jack gets annoyed for not giving him a son, and a stillbirth gone horribly wrong (to Jennifer, hence the name aversion on Jackie's part) renders Pam infertile. Now, she is no longer a woman, she thinks, so she projects this toxic attitude to Jackie. As she drinks.

Top 100 Ladies of TV
Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!
Only this time I'm restricting it to TV characters, or I will die of Overwhelm.
NOTE: This list is not in any kind of order, I just wrote them down as they came to mind. I considered alphabetical, but found it was nicer to keep everyone from a given show together. And rather than starting from scratch, I kept as much of the original list as I could and just added newer favorites on at the end, if you're wondering why some of these Very Old Fandoms are clustered at the top.

Left-leaning media outlets have decided to take a more objective approach to covering the electrical grid issues plaguing California after slamming Texas following last year’s winter storm that caused blackouts across the state.
In February 2021, following a winter storm that caused widespread power outages for 4 million Texans that left almost 100 dead, top Democrats began to call for investigations into state Republicans’ handling of the crisis, reaffirming their support for radical environmental policies.
"Governor Abbott thought Texas could run an electrical grid that ignored the climate crisis," Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, N.Y., tweeted at the time. "It was not resilient."
Schumer went on to call for a federal investigation to look into how the Republican governor’s policies "have failed and exacerbated the winter storm crisis."
GAVIN NEWSOM'S 2024 CHANCES COULD BE THREATENED BY CALIFORNIA'S ENERGY GRID STRUGGLES
"As with COVID, a natural disaster has become far deadlier due to the inaction & ineptitude of Abbott and Texas’ Republican leadership," Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke similarly tweeted. "This didn’t have to happen and doesn’t have to continue."
Almost immediately, figures on CNN and MSNBC began to follow Democratic allies and criticize state leaders for the deadly outages. The situation was amplified after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R., appeared to blame renewable energy alternatives for Texas’ situation, claiming that the electrical grid failure showed how the Green New Deal would be a "deadly deal" for the United States.
The media cried foul, criticizing Abbott’s rhetoric, as well as the Texas GOP for their handling of energy policy in the Lone Star state. The issue was further exacerbated when Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was caught leaving the state for Cancun during the disaster. The media pushed back on the idea that wind turbines or other forms of renewable energy played a role in the disaster, and instead used the situation to double down on aspects of Democrats’ progressive energy policy.
With a graphic plastered across the screen that read "No, it wasn’t the windmills," MSNBC’s "All In" host Chris Hayes asserted that the grid failure in Texas was the result of a "complex confluence of factors." He claimed that these factors included extreme weather in an "era of climate change," a "woefully underdeveloped" energy infrastructure, as well as Texas’ "aggressive" deregulation of an independent energy market.
MSNBC’s "Deadline: White House" host Nicolle Wallace gave a similar critique of Texas, claiming the outages were a result of a larger Republican effort to "dismantle the state" and thus, energy. She further claimed that Republicans were engaging in disinformation by critiquing renewable energy.
"This is the reality of the toxic sort of stew of today’s GOP," she added.
Another MSNBC host, Joe Scarborough, laughed as he claimed that the reason wind turbines didn’t work during the winter storm was because "they bought the wrong ones."
WSJ EDITORIAL BOARD: CALIFORNIA'S BLACKOUTS ARE A RESULT OF 'MAN-MADE CLIMATE POLICIES', 'NOT CLIMATE CHANGE'
On at least two separate occasions, CNN attempted to push back against Republicans’ claims about the electrical grid. In one instance, CNN’s Pamela Brown ripped into Abbott for his critique of progressive energy policies, asserting that placing blame on things like the Green New Deal was analogous to blaming your neighbor’s unplugged space heater after a fire destroys the whole apartment complex.
Furthermore, CNN’s Brianna Keilar went on a lengthy rant in which she slammed Abbot and placed the blame on Texas for choosing to operate its own power grid and "refusing the help" of the federal system which every other state relies upon.
"Texas makes like Fleetwood Mac and goes its own way," Keilar smirked.
At one point, the CNN host also cited New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as an authority on power issues in Texas, displaying a tweet arguing the infrastructure failures in the state were "quite literally" what happens when you don’t pursue a Green New Deal.
But no such criticism of lawmakers, the state, or any particular grid operators was anywhere to be found after California narrowly avoided blackouts this past week as leaders urged residents to conservatively use their home and vehicle electricity. Instead, media networks placed blame solely on extreme heat and climate change.
According to a review of Grabien transcripts, primetime talk shows on MSNBC and CNN almost entirely avoided the situation in California, with morning and daytime news programs pushing the occasional update off to reporters on the ground.
CNN’s Erin Burnett briefly mentioned California’s grid strain, noting that 58 million Americans have been warned to prepare for rolling power outages.
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST WARNS OF 'DIRE' ELECTRICITY CRISIS IN CALIFORNIA: 'INCOMPETENCE PILED ON IDEOLOGY'
The Washington Post acted as perhaps the best example of this media infatuation, with one article written about the Texas blackouts earlier this month, and another two pieces about the California grid issues last week.
"A year after Texas cold spell, study shows renewable energy could help prevent blackouts," The Washington Post’s Kasha Patel wrote. Her "Capital Weather Gang" piece highlighted a recent study that showed how electricity blackouts could soon be avoided across the nation by switching to solar, wind, and water energy sources.
After making note of the devastation caused by the February 2021 winter storm, Patel hyped the study, arguing that switching to 100% clean and renewable energy sources could end Texas’ problems. Later in the piece, Patel noted that other researchers as well as those "outside the science field" contended that the plan would be too expensive, more so than other sources, including nuclear energy. However, the author claimed that while solar was expensive years ago, it is one of the cheapest energy sources to employ today.
Another Washington Post business story by Evan Halper and Erica Werner touted California’s unwavering commitment to green energy, with state officials arguing that the issue is not the aggressive pace of their transition, which includes banning gas vehicles by 2035, but rather the climate change such a transition is "designed to confront."
The writers spent ample time detailing new innovations in renewable energies, such as batteries the size of a small cottage that enable energy to be distributed and stored on an industrial level. The piece also highlighted several California citizens and their thoughts on the grid strain, the exhaustive heat, and climate change. The piece noted that Californians are more than willing to "buy in."
The heat "is definitely something that’s getting worse," one student living in Monterey Park told the paper. "It’s hard to ignore global warming."
The piece also made note of a clothing store owner, who in the past cranked up the air conditioning to "sweater weather" to move product, but was quick to point out "I wouldn’t do that now." She instead has made a habit of setting the thermostat to 78 degrees, as recommended by state officials.

I JUST FINISHED SAW VI
OMFG
Y'ALL
Alright, so I think it's so interesting how John keeps making appearances in these movies even though he's, well, dead. OR IS HE?? I'm honestly not convinced he's dead, like, yeah they opened up his body in that morgue, literally removed his brain, but like, this is the Saw franchise, freaking anything can happen, maybe one of the big twists is that John's still alive somehow. If that's NOT the case, then I think it's really interesting that they continue to feature him in these movies despite the fact that he's been killed off. I like that we keep learning more about him though and his connections to the 'players' in his 'games'.
I was NOT expecting Agent Perez to still be alive, that was shock number one. I was convinced she'd been killed off, so that was quite a surprise. I feel even worse for Strahm now, he died thinking his partner was dead.
Hoffman is one slick son of a bitch, the way he just kept getting away with shit, good grief. And when Erickson and Perez had that woman analyzing the voice recording, I KNEW they were fucked, I got the feeling that they were getting suspicious of Hoffman and there was no way he was going to let them live if they found him out.
It was nice to see Amanda again, I was hoping we'd get to see her and Hoffman interact, that was neat to see. I wondered what their relationship was like while I was watching Saw V. I'm also glad to finally know what was in the note Hoffman left for her. Didn't expect Amanda to have been involved with Cecil the night Jill miscarried, that was shock number two.
Speaking of Jill, I've had my suspicions of her ever since her first appearance. Since she's John's ex, I wondered if she was involved wit everything going on, and apparently she IS. The more time she was onscreen, the more suspicious I got. I wonder if she's the one who's going to be calling the shots from now on?
AND did Hoffman survive the reverse bear trap?! I mean, his jaw was partially ripped open, so I don't see how he could've survived that, I guess it's possible if he's gotten to in time?? IDK, I suppose I'll find out in the next movie, maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was also SO wrong about who Tara and Brent were. I thought they were William's family, BUT NO, NO THEY WERE NOT FKGJDLKS it blew my mind that they're actually Harold Abbott's family, that was wild. I also thought William was talking to a girlfriend or something when it showed him on the phone in that one scene near the beginning, but he was actually talking to Pamela, his freaking SISTER, didn't see that coming either!
It was also fucked how Hoffman was using Strahm's severed hand to plant his fingerprints on shit.
I'm sorry if this post is all over the place, my mind has just yet again been BLOWN by a Saw movie and it's hard to get my thoughts together fkjgksdjskjd
Once again I sit here in anticipation for the next movie, eager to see what more is going to be revealed.
