You'd feel it more than hear it – a deep, visceral throb, emerging from somewhere beyond the thick foliage. Like the rumble of a foghorn, it would thrum in your ribcage and bristle the hairs on your neck. In the dense forests of the Cretaceous period, it would have been terrifying.
We have few clues for what noises dinosaurs might have made while they ruled the Earth before being killed off 66 million years ago. The remarkable stony remains uncovered by palaeontologists offer evidence of the physical prowess of these creatures, but not a great deal about how they interacted and communicated. Sound doesn't fossilise, of course.
From what we know about animal behaviour, however, dinosaurs were almost certainly not silent.
Now with the help of new, rare fossils and advanced analysis techniques, scientists are starting to piece together some of the clues about how dinosaurs might have sounded...

#im listenin ⁉️⁉️#apollo answers shit#not to steal your thunder or anything but like. isnt it crazy that we know the sounds of some dinosaurs???#we know the noise of a Parasaurolophus because people made a model of the crest on its head (a hollow nasal passage) and blowing air in????#and i havent fact checked this but obviously tRexes didnt roar. probably no dinosaurs did#their closest modern relatives are birds and some reptiles and roaring is a mammal thing but APPARENTLY (big fat grain of salt)#APPARENTLY they would have made like. a rumbling sound so deep at times that we wouldnt be able to hear it. you would feel it tho :)#Quetzas are so cool too. Quetzacoatlus (i think i spelled it right?) was a pteradon (so not a dinosaur but lived around the same time as-#cretaceous dinosaurs like T Rex and Triceratops)#that grew up to roughly the height of a giraffe with wingspan of about 33 feet/10.something meters#what also makes them look even bigger was their diet#they often fed on Magyarosaurus which were some of the smallest ever sauropods at a height of under 2 meters/6 and a half feet tall*#*sauropods are the long necked dinosaurs. The biggest dinosaur ever belonged to the sauropod group and yet magyarosaurs were barely the-#height of an average person#gushing rn#there was a lot of confusion about sauropods for a while because it wwas hard to tell whether 2 differnt ones (i believe bronto and apato)-#were actually the same species or not. the main evidence from what i remember was that there was less variation between the skulls than-#modern day girrafes. but i think they were eventually decided they were individual#because of like leg structure and that#dinosaur talk#anyway. i like dinosaurs#faves

How To Comfort People by Tsukishima Kei
word count: 961 || avg. reading time: 4 mins.
pairing: Tsukishima x chubby!Reader
genre: angsty fluff, rivals to… whatever this is
warnings: horrible social skills
request: small-medium strawberry-passion fruit lemonade with extra ice and a slice of ginger for Tsukishima Kei
________________________________
Tumblr media
Tsukishima said Goodbye to the rest of the team and walked down the road alone. The thought of spending a whole bus ride with the others who were still downtrodden from their loss against Aoba Josai was too annoying. Instead he called his older brother to pick him up. Thunder rumbled above and the steely gray sky matched his mood. Tch, it was just a club. No reason to care so much. Hands in his pockets he spotted the small corner shop his brother told him to meet him at. It was still a little ways away but Tsukki didn‘t mind the walk. He kicked a pebble along the path. Then something wet hit his neck and when he looked up, big drops of rain splattered his glasses. Cursing extensively he fell into a jog, his limbs still screaming from the exertion of the match.
He sought shelter at a run down bus stop halfway to the intersection. Still swearing he shook his hair, brushed at his clothes and then took off his glasses, feeling around for a somewhat dry spot on his shirt he could wipe them on.
Once he could see again, he noticed a figure standing with him under the rusty, slightly leaking roof.
The thought that he had seen you before clung to him much like his wet jacket. Then when you nodded and smiled politely he realized that you were that pudgy manager from Aoba Josai. Just his luck. When he decided to simply ignore you until his brother came, the ribbed roof creaked and a small wave of icy rain water splashed into his collar, running down the back of his neck. He gave a decidedly embarrassing shriek and jumped to the side. To add insult to injury he stumbled and bumped into you. Perfect.
Muttering an apology with a small bow he turned to stare stoically out onto the slowly flooding road. After a minute or so he heard you take a deep breath.
“You guys played really well.“, you said, awkwardly holding onto the strap of your bag, “It was pretty impressive seeing so many first years on the starting team.“
Tsukki guessed you meant it as a compliment and he was not about to tell you that it was simply lack of team members that influenced the roster significantly.
In his opinion, it would have been perfectly fine to stand there in silence but his proximity seemed to jump start some kind of rambling in you because now you just wouldn‘t shut up, “I‘m sure you‘ll have better luck next time.“
Tsukki was certain you were just taunting him at this point.
He bit back, “Your oh so „Great King“ is not unbeatable. Everyone has a weakness and next time we‘ll find yours and destroy you.“ Where the hell did that come from? It seemed that the loss did bother him more than he thought. He almost sounded like Hinata.
Even worse, your expression changed from - what he had interpreted as - patronizing to shocked. He pressed his lips together. So what if you had been sincere? He would rather listen to Hinata babble about the Little Giant for two hours than apologize. But then again… you did look genuinely confused and even… hurt (?) at his words.
Long silent seconds dragged on between you two, the downpour on the thin metal roof drumming in his ears. He threw another glance in your direction and a little triceratops figure dangling from your bag caught his eyes. It was the same make as the parasaurolophus he had on his house keys.
Tsukki let out a small breath, then looked around, needlessly making sure that no one would see or hear him and then mumbled “sorry“ being 110% sure that it was entirely drowned out by the heavy drops hitting the metal above.
Lightning flashed across the sky and he saw you flinch and retreat a little into the corner. Great, apparently he was trapped here with a five year old. Thinking of the triceratops he pressed out a rather lukewarm “there there“.
When the thunder clap followed you seemed to shrink even further and Tsukki saw that your hands started to shake.
… What would his brother do if he was here? Akiteru was always the one with the social skills. He would make sure that you were okay and comfort you. Tsukki definitely already did that. And then he would probably prevent you from getting scared again. Resisting the urge to groan loudly at the pathetic display in front of him he reached up and took off the headphones around his neck. You looked up at him with impossibly big eyes when he placed them over your ears. They were top of the line so excellent noise cancelling was a given. Stepping a little to his right, he was now standing directly in front of you - tall enough to block your view of the sky and of the next lightning flashing through the clouds.
Teary eyes aside you were actually not that horrible to look at, he thought. Even… even quite cute, especially with the way his headphones seemed to squish your chubby cheeks together a bit more. Plus there was the triceratops. Always a sign of good taste, really.
A honk behind him ripped Tsukki from his thoughts. Akiteru‘s beat-up car waited in front of the dingy bus stop, engine running.
In one swift motion, Tsukki collected his headphones again and with a curt nod (more towards the key chain than you) he hurried to the passenger side.
His brother offered a sort of happy frown when he closed the door.
“Shouldn‘t I give your friend a ride?“
“No.“
And with that, the brothers drove off, making way for the bus behind them.

Parasaurolophus (Beside Crested Lizard) was a Hadrosaurid Ornithopod Dinosaur from western North America during the late Cretaceous period (76.9-70.5 Mya).
Tumblr media
This iconic Hadrosaur is known for its long crest on top of its head, which it likely used for display and for vocalization. Parasaurolophus is the only dinosaur we currently know what it might have sounded like. Thanks to well preserved fossils and computer modeling, scientists have been able (through methods beyond my expertise) to reconstruct the sounds Parasaurolophus could have made. Unfortunately we may never understand the possibly complex social uses for these vocalizations, but maybe science will surprise us one day as it has many times before.

This one reminds me of Parasaurolophus, the big hollow headed dinosaur that made sounds with its head. The adults sounded more like tubas and the babies ranged from piccolos to flutes and the teenagers were like trumpets and trombones, so a large family unit could easily play Sousa marches and John Williams scores.

DARIUS DUTIFUL DAY- Continuation
'Ehi, you know Parasaurolophus uses their crest to amplify sounds in a range of frequencies from 30 to 700 Hz'
'Woah, really? That's loud. We should search for some earplugs too if they ever want to come over camp at full volume.'
They both started laughing successfully breaking the silence.
'How do you think it's gonna look like, the zipline?'
'Well the indominus made it fall. We will probably start seeing pieces- now.' The timing of brooklynn words was perfect, with some of the wood pieces poking out of the bushes. Up ahead where once the observation tower of the zipline stood only emptiness remained. The fences and gates that surrounded it, thrown out of the way, the chainlink and metal bent and chipped. The signs of the Indominus claws still marked the ground.
'Well... lets start searching for.. anything really.' Darius said, approaching the main body of the tower and starting to move stuff around. It was all so heavy.
'Be careful, it may be unstable.' She was looking at the gates, 'we could come back with the others and bring these to make a fence for the house, maybe.'
It was all mostly wood planks, same as what they could get from the camp remains. They put to the sides the most solid, dividing them for size. The longest ones could be put in between the legs of the treehouse and hopefully give more support.
'Ehy darius, look!' Brooklynn called him. She was holding the line of the zipline, her emerald eyes shining of the spark given by ideas, 'if we can find the mechanism we can make a sort of pulley and-"
"-it will help bringing materials and the heavier things on top of the treehouse! You are a genius lynn."
'But we have to find it first." She looked at the end dipping inside the rubble. 'Maybe we are lucky and it's still attached.'
They shared a look, 'With our luck? It probably detached.'

Random Thoughts about frills and crests on dinosaurs
A while ago I watched Jurassic Park with my wife, not having seen the movie in ages. I was reminded of the hype that the movie got when it came out, how we were amazed by this brand new animation technique that created such realistic looking dinosaurs (at least, compared to the dinos we had seen in movies prior to JP).
I went to see the movie in a theater with my father. I was one year younger than the age limit permitted, but because I was with a parent, I was allowed in. My mother had warned me that the movie might be too scary for me, but I was determined to see it. I loved dinosaurs, how could I be afraid of something I loved? I was a dumb kid. I made it through the T-Rex scene, occasionally peeking between my fingers, but the Dilophosaurus scene turned out too scary for me. My father asked if I wanted to leave home mid movie and I said yes.
I later wondered why I could endure the T-Rex scene but not the Dilo. I think it was because the T-Rex, while big and intimidating, was still behaving like an animal. Its behaviour with the car was like that of a crow that has found a puzzle box with a treat inside, curious and trying to solve the puzzle of how to open the car. The Dilo on the other hand exhibited behaviour that made no sense for an animal. At first it too seemed just curious and playful but then out of freaking nowhere spread a frill and started to scream as if it was afraid of the human in front of it. The whole scene read like a threatening display, even though we could clearly see from the dinosaur's earlier behaviour that it wasn't afraid of humans. It behaved like a serial killer, wanting its prey to be scared, succeeding in spooking one small kid in the audience.
Now that I'm adult I'm no longer scared by the Dilo scene but the frill still bothers and annoys me. It was added to the movie in order to make the Dilo more intimidating and scary, but whoever designed it forgot to study the animal it was inspired by; the frilled lizard. Do frilled lizards display their frills to their prey before attacking it? No, the frill is used to scare away predators and to intimidate rivals.
The Dilophosaurus's frill may be 100% fictional, but many dinosaurs had frills, collars, crests, sails and such. I remember reading dinosaur books as a kid and learning about all kinds of theories about the purpose of these bodyparts. That Stegos would use their plates to regulate heat, Paras would use their crests to make sounds and Ceratopsians used their frill (is it called frill? Or crest? Or collar?) for mating displays. Some of these may be decent theories but sometimes I think paleontogists should look at existing animals in zoos to look for the most likely reasons an animal would develope a frill or a crest. To me it seems that most of the time these bodyparts are used like the frilled lizard uses its frill, either to make the animal look bigger and scarier to turn away predators or to intimidate rivals.
The Parasaurolophus crest being used for communication fascinated me, because it differed from the usual "intimidation tool/courtship decoration" usage of crests and frills. The crest is hollow and I remember seeing a documentary where a guy made a replica of it with tubes and demonstrated what kind of noise it could make. So it seemed a more likely theory to me than some of the wilder ones out there (there was a claim the crest was hollow in order to cool the brain, so many heat regulation theories back in the day).
The theory of a bodypart being used for mating display seems odd to me when the bodypart is identical for both males and females. For most animals, if a bodypart is used for mating display, only males have them. I personally think Ceratopsian frills make more sense as a protective plate making the neck less vulnerable. But if they were for mating display, why would females also have them? Or were they part of a "mating dance" where a male first displays his frill and if the female likes him she'll respond by bowing her head and showing her colourful frill?
