The large and glorious, Parmotrema reticulatum,
Common macro lichen in the ruffle lichen group, common on acidic barks in areas with humidity year round, though can be found despite this niche specific commonality in less humid areas at lower frequency of occurrence.
Soredia/ Soredium, here we see this structure on black sheet lichen at the terminal section of the lobed thallus, It’s interesting because this is a unique type of compartmentalized viviparity that many lichen undergo to create more of it’s self, asexually propagate.
These globules are similar to isidia in the regard that they are asexual in method and break off; however these are fungal hyphae wrapping up the photobiont as a fragmentation package externally forming from openings escaping outward at terminals or as groupings in an open section and are globular, where as isidia are columner or clubshaped, much smaller, and often begin formation enclosed fully in the lichen before being broken off. True to this, it’s actually said that if comparing asexual structures, cephalodium are actually more similar to isidium in conception do to being encapsulated then emerging like a wart or gall; with that said isidium are non discretionary to photobiont and fragment like soredium, where as the cephalodium is descrete to cyanobacterial photobionts and is more similar to an eruptive mechanism for transport/removal.

Sidenote: I have finally acquired a copy of Entangled Life and good christ, I am loving it so very much. It makes me smile when a Cosmo song comes across my spotify while I'm reading it. I admire and love the Sheldrake brothers very dearly, and have found much comfort and inspiration in their work. 🍄💛🎙

梅の木苔[Umenokigoke] Parmotrema tinctorum
梅[Ume] : Prunus mume
の[No] : Of
木[Ki] : Tree
苔[-goke|Koke] : Moss
Although it is so named because it commonly grows on old trees of Ume, it also grows on other trees. Although it is named "moss," is a lichen. And although there are other kinds of species, they are often called by this name as well.
It is considered one of the bioindicators of air pollution and grows only in places with clean air.
Bonsai, Ikebana and garden trees with it on them are valued for their tasteful appearance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi

Parmotrema perlatum is a Himalayan herb commonly known as black stone flower. It is a species of lichen used as a spice in India. It is one of the rare spices used for cooking meats, fish, and vegetables. It is generally used to enhance the flavor and taste. Some of the other names for it include shaileyam in Sanskrit, kalpasi in Tamil, dagar da phool in Punjabi, dagad phool in Marathi, raathi Pootha (banda puvvu) in Telugu, kallu hoovu in Kannada and patthar ke phool in Hindi, bojhwar and chadila. In its raw state, black stone flower does not have much taste or fragrance. However, when put in contact with heat, especially cooking oil and ghee, it releases a distinctive earthy, smoky flavour and aroma. Stone flower is a soft brown and black coloured lichen that gives the signature black color essentially to Goda Masala/ Kala Masala Goda Masala/Kala Masala, a key ingredient in Maharashtrian kitchens. For best results Kalpasi should be roasted in oil with other spices such as cassia bark, bay leaves and star anise to intensify the flavour it imparts into the dishes. Stone Flower, bestowed with profuse antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial traits, besides kapha-pitta balancing abilities, is a remarkable spice that is essentially a lichen, for curing kidney stones, healing external wounds and improving breathing, lung functions, UTI. Parmotrema praesorediosum
Powder-crown ruffle lichen
This foliose lichen grows in rounded patches up to 10 cm in diameter. It has irregular lobes that have upturned, ruffled margins covered in soredia. The upper surface is smooth and gray, and the lower surface is black with mottled brown margins and simple rhizines. It only rarely produces apothecia, which have a sorediate margin surrounding a brown disc. P. praesorediosum grows on exposed rocks and trees in tropical and temperate regions of the world.

Okay y’all, I know lichens/fungi aren’t technically botany but I’m super proud of this and I want to share! Top to bottom: Parmotrema, Usnea, Parmelia sulcata, Stereum. All from a little hike I took 03/04/2017 near Bellevue, WA.

I moved to North Carolina nearly a week ago, and after days of errands (and too many trips to the DMV), today I finally had an opportunity to go for a hike. There are no words for how elated I was to stumble upon Usnea strigosa, which I encountered once before while working in West Virginia but was unable to photograph. I also found a new-to-me lichen, Parmotrema sp. (perforatum?) and was enchanted by the long black cilia growing on its margins. All in all, an excellent hike.
