"FAMEUX BANDIT," Le Canada. January 17, 1913. Page 9. ---- IL DEVRA REPONDRE A DIX ACCUSATIONS DE CAMBRIOLAGE. ---- Toronto, 17. ///
"NOTORIOUS AS "BAD MAN": DRIVEN FROM ROCHESTER," Toronto Globe. January 18, 1913. Page 9. ---- HERBERT WINCHESTER WILL FACE TEN CHARGES OF BURGLARY IN TORONTO. ---- Ten charges of burglary have been laid against Herbert Winchester, alias John Weston, alias Herbert Wilson, who was arrested in a lumber camp near Parry Sound a few days ago and brought to the city yesterday by Provincial Constable Markle. Winchester was taken before Magistate Denison and remanded for a week without electing or pleading.
Winchester, who claims Cleveland, Ohio, as his home, is said to be the ringleader of a trio of house and shop-breakers, which entered the homes of a number of prominent citizens about two months ago and secured a large amount of jewellery and money. Inspector of Detectives George Kennedy last night stated that the detectives had recovered the most of the jewellery, and they had learned where they were likely to get the rest of it. Winchester told the police that he came to the city last July from Rochester, where he had earned the title of being a "bad man," with the result that the authorities of that city gave him two hours to get out of town.
Cyril Smith, one of the trio, pleaded guilty a few days ago to breaking into four of the houses, and was sentenced to three years in the Penitentiary, and John Blagford, the third member of the gang, is awaiting trial on seven charges of house-breaking.
[AL: Winchester was all of 19, and told the prison authorities he was from Missouri. He had been in the Industrial School in Rochester before, and listed his trade as electrician. He was convicted on January 28 for four years - I can't find the newspaper stories reporting this - and was convict #F-547 at Kingston Penitentiary. He worked assisting a machine in a workshop, and despite his reputation, was reported only twice. He was deported in late 1916.]

When Knocking On Wood Is The Last Chance
I remember my Grandma Puffer’s advice for when knocking on wood is the last chance to overcome a negative possibility. But she was superstitious, and so was her daughter Beulah, my Mom. I always tried to avoid becoming superstitious, but I remember one incident that suggested that my Grandma’s advice rang true. When I was pre-teen, I had a large wart on my knee that was a constant…

10/04/22 - Parry Sound, ON - BURSTING WITH COLOR - Got a little bit turned around on our walk this morning and ended up taking a much longer route back to the Airstream Hilton han intended. The good news was that the longer route took us through a hilly wooded area bursting with displays of fall colors. Glad we’re this far north at precisely the right time to see the fall colors. Hope we continue to see similar displays as we make our way south back to the U.S.

I'm listening to the Red Dragon audiobook, and the one thing I take issue with is that the narrator gives every other southerner an accent, but not Will Graham. None of the adaptations give him an accent. The man grew up poor in rural Louisiana and spent the first part of his career in New Orleans! He's gonna have some sort of accent!
He can be brilliant profiler that Hannibal is interested in or in love with and be a southerner with a southern accent, I promise!

"PLAN HOUSE CANVASS TO AID WAR WORKERS," Toronto Star. October 6, 1942. Page 30. ---- Armies of Women Volunteers Will Ask Citizens to Share Homes --- ALL OVER CANADA ---- Special to The Star Ottawa, Oct. 6 - In more than 40 cities and towns across Canada in which war industries are located or are nearby, armies of women volunteers will shortly set out to appraise the shortage of housing and induce people with available space to share their homes. (Mrs. Graham Boyce. of the Women's Voluntary Services Centre, Queen St. E., Toronto, announced in a letter to Mayor Conboy today, that members of the organization are conducting a voluntary housing canvass throughout the city.) "Almost immediately," the wartime prices and trade board announced today, the job will be launched in Kingston, Welland and Windsor. Similar campaigns will follow in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Barrie, Parry Sound. London. Brockville, Belleville, Trenton, Peterboro, Cornwall, Sarnia and St. Thomas.
Outside Ontario, the work of appraisal will also be carried out in Halifax. Prince Rupert, Vancouver, Edmonton and numerous other centres. To Open Registries In some cities and towns, central registries will be established where people may voluntarily register the housing space they have available. In others, a house-to-house canvass will be instituted to find out exactly what additional accommodation can be produced and convince people they should rent all unused space in their homes. If this campaign for voluntary co-operation does not succeed, a system of rationing housing facilities will be worked out, the board declared.
The whole plan and the order in which the appraisal should take place in the various centres throughout the country is being completed by the board in consultation with Russell Smart, newly named housing administrator. The actual survey, however, under the direction of Miss Byrne Hope Saunders, director of consumer services of the board, will be made by the regional advisory committees which is conducting the rationing canvass. In the Toronto district, the head of the regional committee is Mrs. Ryland H. New, of Oakville. Many Eager to Help "Returns so far," said Mrs. Graham Boyce, "show accommodation for family units is not readily available, but many homes are ready and eager to take single war workers. We are asking every house-holder to co-operate to the full with the canvass. No more valuable service could be rendered to this country than if householders without accommodation to spare should offer rooms to soldiers' dependents or war workers."

In a new commission by BBC Radio 2 for BBC Sounds, The Showstopper will be available from 19 March featuring Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey.
40 years ago the HIV virus, and the resulting disease AIDS, were named. It devastated people’s lives all over the world, including bringing immeasurable heartbreak to the theatre community of Broadway and the West End.
Theatre, however, became a voice of awareness, rebelling against the stigma present at the time. There were plays, one-man performances and musicals highlighting the disease and its effect on people, spreading messages of hope and support and helping to quash hurtful and misleading information.
In this programme, actor Jonathan Bailey, who performed as a child in Les Miserables in the West End at the time, tells the story of HIV/AIDS impact on the theatre community, and tells how this community supported those affected. This documentary includes powerful stories from those at the heart of the theatre community at the time, including producers Cameron Mackintosh and Nick Allott, lyricist Tim Rice and Musical Director Jae Alexander, alongside performers such as actor and activist Jill Nalder (Les Miserables, Oliver!), Claire Moore (The Phantom of the Opera), Craig Revel Horwood, Stifyn Parri (Les Miserables, Brookside), and Make A Difference charity’s Melanie Tranter.
