Neither Jean nor I are sober enough to get out of the basket and untie the rope. What are we to do? Jean solves things byโฆ

I created these custom caricatures of my favorite band, the Crash Test Dummies, and was able to hand them off to them on Wednesday at their Omaha show. They are were gracious. Such a great show, great music and down to earth group. Sculpted in @cosclayusa by me, painted with acrylics with graphics created in Illustrator and printed on vinyl. . . #paulpapedesigns #cosclay #cosclayusa #caricature #polymerclay #handsculpted #handmade #custom #uniquegifts #crashtestdummies @crashtestdummiesofficial (at Paul Pape Designs) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpnDq1xOw7x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Eyoooooo it's my first fic ever on tumblr! This is sort of inspired by this answer from @riding-palomionos-every-day and my ongoing frustration with Jack acting like an asshole in Santa Fe (Prologue).
Run
Crutchie has never been in the Refuge.
He is Jackโs second and he takes that job seriously. He burnishes Jackโs legend whenever he gets the chance, and keeps all of his secrets โ the ones Jack chooses to confide, at least.
But when the Refuge comes up, Jack donโt act like himself. He says stuff that donโt make sense. Crutchie knows better than to ask for details about his time there.
Still, there is some facts he needs to know. To be prepared.
There used to be a boy called Walter the Crip who hung around St. Paulโs Chapel on Fulton Street where Crutchie would sell the afternoon edition. Walter was a bum, not a newsie; both of his legs was stiff and he used two crutches to get around. But he was nice enough to talk to. Then one day, Crutchie didnโt see him no more.
Folks said the bulls got him for begging. Crutchie knows where they mustโve sent him. Now, he might as well be a ghost.
Racetrack was in the Refuge for the first time last year, a three-month sentence for loitering and smoking on a public thoroughfare. When he got out, Crutchie asked him what it was like. โThey takes away your shoes,โ Racer said darkly. โSoโs you canโt run.โ He wouldnโt say much more.
When Crutchie was little, he used to have two crutches, like Walter. That made it easier to get around, for sure, and he donโt remember his back hurting him back then. But you canโt hold up a pape with the headline showing if you ainโt got no free hand. You canโt count back change. You canโt pop a fella hard in the mouth if he tries to roll you.
Crutchie takes pride in being a good seller. Heโs gotta eat, and heโd gotta be able to defend himself, too. Heโs got a rep of his own to maintain. And itโs hard to explain, but to him, two crutches just looks worse. Makes him look like a fella he donโt wanna be.
But there ainโt no denying in โ he is not as steady with just one.
Specs has done several stints in the Refuge โ more than anyone else Crutchie knows. Heโs been picked up for skipping out on trolley fare. For fighting, when bigger kids jumped him. For other minor crimes he didnโt even do. โIt ainโt so bad in there,โ Specs said, when Crutchie asked him. โThe boys is rough, but theyโse OK. You just gotta make friends with the right ones, and itโs fine there. So long as you ainโt on the Spiderโs bad side.โ
Specs is tall for his age, with straight, strong limbs and a handsome mug. People usually take to him, โcept for the folks who hate him on sight for who he is and what he canโt change. Heโs a good scrapper, a good seller, an all-around good fella. He sticks out, but heโs used to getting along, like Crutchie is.
โYou knowed any crips in there?โ Crutchie asked him.
โA few.โ
โHowโd they treat 'em?โ
Specs takes off his glasses and rubs his nose. He never likes to say things people donโt want to hear. โJust fine,โ he says. Crutchie is embarrassed that he even asked such a stupid question.
They have all slept in shared rooms for years. Jack donโt flinch when he catches sight of Crutchieโs leg, like some of the other fellas do. He understands that it never growed right. Heโs sketched the muscles that ainโt there and the way the foot twists inward, considering the leg like it is something interesting and not a tragedy. Jack donโt even mind touching it, on days when the pain is so rotten that Crutchie needs a little extra help.
He knows perfectly well that it ainโt gonna get no better. When he says that, he donโt mean it to hurt. Itโs another stupid yarn, a pretty story that makes Jack feel safe.
There are boysโ names carved into the walls of the Refuge dormitories. Ractrack told Crutchie that one day, out of the blue. โI spotted Jackโs name there,โ Ractrack said. โFrom a long time back.โ
Is Walter the Cripโs name somewhere? Maybe. Racer donโt remember seeing it. And Crutchie ainโt gonna ask Specs nothing else.
Itโs all a waste of time to think on it too much, and for a newsie, thereโs already too few selling hours in a day. Crutchie ainโt a dreamer, and he donโt need to run nowhere. His real life is here. Itโs better for him to concentrate on the here and now, on being out, on staying out. On watching for Mr. Snyder and taking care of the littler bkids. On which headline is better today, the World's or the Journ's. On what Kloppmanโs missus is gonna make for dinner.
FIN.
He can make it on his own just fine. Heโs been doing it for years. And heโs got friends. No need to be fast when youโve got friends.
MORE NOTES: I feel like I should also point to this fantastic post from @newsiesquare, which very much informed my thinking about what the hell Jack and Crutchie are even talking about on the roof.
