Actually I do think Penn Badgley has been unfairly maligned in all this like yeah ofc sex scenes in film don't equate to actual porn or sexual intimacy but like. I think it's understandable for some actors (and particularly actresses) to have hangups wrt more explicit sex scenes. Like I'm not an actor but I can see how being put in a position of vulnerability and exposure might make one feel uncomfortable and unnecessarily objectified and I think saying no to or scaling back on certain types of scenes is a reasonable course of action. And likening it to infidelity is a stretch, yeah, but I can also see how reenacting that type of intimacy with a coworker – while semi-nude – may feel like it's crossing a type of boundary. Plus in the interview or whatever he specifically made the point that he had signed the contract and understood that he had to be reasonable abt his request so like. Yeah, sex scenes in media are often artistically important to the work but they also involve the labour of real people whose boundaries you might have to negotiate around. Plenty of actors have made far less reasonable requests for much flimsier reasons.

The instagram thing doesn't surprise me, he's taken a big step back from it lately and while it's sad for us, I'm honestly very glad, because he seems so much happier for it!

Thank you for explaining, I never thought of it that way. I have a few villainous bastards of characters in my arsenal but I'd like to emphasize that I don't bring them out unless they're appropriate for the setting and the group mindset is comfortable with seeing those actions on the dash. Otherwise I save them for the partners in private that I know are okay writing against that content and won't be triggered because for us it's a creative exercise and we enjoy exploring that psychology behind those kinds of characters. I can definitely see your point of view in joining a wholesome town group and SURPRISE there's a character like Voldemort going around doing his thing as opposed to a group where those kinds of characters and plots are mentioned all over the main with trigger warnings to avoid at all costs if you don't want that.

i think that even if someone joins a group with darker themes, there are still things that might not be appropriate. and then it's also a question of if the group puts themselves into the tags to promote their group. to me it's really more of why do you feel the need to write that content among others if you're really doing it for the creative freedom? you can do it in your own novel or something like that. but yeah, a lot of it to me is about exposing people to content they have not willingly sought out.

the view a writer have of their character also matters. if you write a villain character and justify their actions, it's really toxic. and i've seen that a lot in groups, where people excuse their characters' behaviour. but if you write a villain character and are vocal about how wrong it is, it's different. for example, joe goldberg from you. the fandom finds excuses for the character's behaviour and see him as someone that needs to be loved and is hot versus how the actor playing him talks about him being a psychotic bastard who has no reasons for his actions.
