July 19, 2023
By Naaman Zhou
(The New Yorker) — Last winter, on a cold pitch in London, Liverpool’s women’s team played Chelsea, which was on a seventeen-game unbeaten streak and has lately been one of the dominant teams in English women’s soccer. It was the fourth round of the F.A. Cup, a knockout competition known for the occasional surprise. Liverpool scored twice—but Chelsea had Samantha Kerr. In the thirty-second minute, the twenty-nine-year-old striker received a pass from her teammate Niamh Charles, mid-run, raised a foot near the height of her shoulder, and pummelled the ball left to right into the top corner of the goal. Shortly after halftime, she scored again, off a quick pass, after stepping into a blind spot behind a Liverpool defender. Later, the ball came her way in the air. She jumped, the neck muscles turned, the ball fell in. When the game ended, the score was Liverpool 2, Kerr 3. “It was almost a given, wasn’t it?” a commentator murmured, before it was through.
Afterward, Kerr hugged her teammates and exchanged the customary back pats. Game-changing goals are routine for her—they seem to define the entire season for others. Like all of soccer’s great strikers, Kerr has a full menu of ways to score; commentators like to call it a knack, or an eye for goal. But, with Kerr, it’s all about motion. “Next time you watch her play, see who makes the first movements,” Emma Hayes, her coach at Chelsea, once said. “It’s always Sam.” Carli Lloyd, a two-time World Cup winner with the U.S. team, told me, “She’s a sniper in front of the goal. She will hover, and she will find a way.” Between 2017 and 2022, Kerr was the top scorer in every league she played in, across the highest tiers of Australia, the United States, and England—sometimes simultaneously. It has been nearly four years since she last played a game in the National Women’s Soccer League, in the U.S., but she is still the league’s all-time top scorer, with more goals than Alex Morgan or Megan Rapinoe.
Kerr is also the captain and star player of the national team of Australia, which, along with New Zealand, is hosting the Women’s World Cup. Australia has never advanced further than the quarterfinals. The reigning champion and world No. 1 is the United States. Spain has the best player in the world, the midfielder Alexia Putellas. England won the Euros, and Canada won the gold medal in the Olympics, where Australia finished fourth. Still, in the past few months, the Australian team, known as the Matildas, has beaten or matched several of the world’s best squads. Its second-best player, the defender Ellie Carpenter, is back from a nearly yearlong injury. And there will be a home-field advantage. “I think there’s tremendous pressure,” Lloyd, who will cover this year’s tournament as an analyst for Fox Sports, told me. “If they don’t go far in this World Cup, it’s going to be deemed as a failure.”

Perth Glory FC 1 – 3 Sydney FC
Perth Glory FC 0 – 0 Sydney FC

Ausenal
Arsenal Women x Teen!Reader
Summary: You join the other Aussies at Arsenal
Tumblr media
"Yeah, all you really need to worry about is if the big girls will let you play with them," Kyra teased from the seat next to you, pinching at your cheek," They might not and then you'll be left on the bench!"
"Kyra!" Steph snapped from the driving seat," Leave her alone!"
"I'm just joking!" Kyra laughed.
You didn't really find it funny. You were a ball of anxious energy as Steph drove you and the rest of 'Ausenal' to training. You and Kyra had, technically, signed for Arsenal on the same day but you had remained stuck in Australia after because you had to sort out some stuff about school so Kyra had already met everybody before you did.
"It's not funny," Steph said," She's scared."
"I'm not scared!" You denied it even though you were definitely scared and, had you not been sitting down, you would definitely be shaking in your shoes.
"You don't have to be scared," Caitlin said, finally looking up from her phone," Everyone's cool. If anything, they'll just complain about another Aussie joining them. We're taking over."
"And by complain," Steph said sternly," She means tease. No one's going to complain about you, munchkin."
"Munchkin!" Kyra giggled, pinching at your cheek as you tried to pull away.
The nickname had stuck ever since your call up to the national team when they went through a bout of injuries that meant that the scrawny nearly-sixteen year old had been deemed one of the next best alternatives and you had never been able to escape since.
Playing with, as Kyra called them, 'the big girls' had been your dream for years but now that you'd made it, you couldn't quite believe it and your shyness had come out in full force.
"Alright," Steph said as you all piled out," Boots?"
"Yeah."
"Socks?"
"Uh-huh."
"Schoolwork?"
"Yep."
"Good." She adjusted your coat and smoothed down the flyaway strands of your hair that were sticking up. "Okay. We're training until lunch and then we've got a two-hour break before the gym session. Do you know what you're doing during that?"
"My schoolwork."
"And, do you-"
"Come on, Steph," Caitlin said, slinging her arm over your shoulder," We've been through this like ten times. Yes, she'll do her homework. Yes, she'll make sure to socialise. Can we go now?"
Steph sighed. "Go on."
Caitlin began to steer you away.
"And make sure she fills up her bottle before training starts!"
The locker room was just as loud as your old locker room back at Perth Glory and it settled you a little bit as you ended up getting changed next to Caitlin, staring straight ahead at your cubby.
The other girls took their time so you were left just sitting on the bench and clicking the heels of your boots together as you waited. You didn't really know your way around so you just had to wait until one of the older girls finished getting ready and took you to the pitch.
"Hey. You're that Australian kid, right? God, I thought Kyra had a baby face."
You looked up and then immediately looked back down.
Jen Beattie was standing in front of you.
"Hi." Your own voice was barely a whisper, hardly even audible over all the noise in changing room.
She leaned a bit closer to you to fully hear and you went rigid. You didn't particularly like new people in your personal space without warning. Hell, it had taken nearly a month for Kyra to be allowed close enough to hug you, let alone pinch your cheek like she did earlier.
"You're not as loud as Kyra, are you?" She asked and it was clear that she was teasing but it still made you feel nervous.
You shook your head.
"She's an angel," Caitlin said," But then again, everybody's an angel when compared to Kyra."
"I'm not that bad!"
"Yeah, sure." Caitlin's arm swung over your shoulders, giving you a little squeeze. "But this munchkin is still an angel."
You kind of wanted the ground to swallow you up. Your cheeks felt hot as the mention of your nickname and you looked bashfully.
"Munchkin?" Jen laughed," I like it."
Caitlin laughed too before steering you out of the locker room onto the pitch. You were thankful that the drills were fairly rudimentary today but still hard enough that everyone was exhausted enough to not talk.
You glanced around as you drained your bottle, skirting out of the way quickly when Kyra approached with her still full bottle, already angling it to squirt towards you.
Usually, you had Mini to protect you when something like this happened but now you had to fend for yourself, darting around the outskirts of the group so Kyra couldn't change you.
You zipped past Lia Wälti and Leah Williamson, sliding past them as Kyra tackled you to the ground. She kept you pinned to the ground with her own weight as she unscrewed the top of the bottle.
You squeezed your eyes shut in preparation but no water came.
"Leah!" Kyra complained," Get off! It was just a joke!"
"It's her first day," Williamson lectured," Don't traumatise her so early. We want to keep her for years."
"Are you okay?" Lia helped you up, patting down your shirt to get the grass scraps off it.
"I'm okay." Just like in the locker room, your voice was barely above a whisper but she didn't seem to mind, just smiling at you.
"Good. I'm glad. Kyra usually isn't that mean, sorry."
"She's not mean." You felt compelled to defend Kyra. "She's just a bit silly sometimes. She doesn't mean harm."
"It's nice that you two are such good friends," Lia said. Somehow, she managed to squish you between her and Leah as you all headed in from training for lunch.
"Mini...er...I mean Katrina, she says that Kyra's got annoying little sister energy."
"Annoying little sister energy!" Leah laughed," Oh, that's gold! I like that!" She swung her arm over your shoulders. "I like you, kiddo."
A piece of nervousness lodged in your chest came loose and disappeared as Leah talked. She didn't seem to need your input much and you were more than happy with that.
Before you knew it, you were sat at a table next to Steph with a full plate and soft conversation washing over you. You still felt nervous around the other girls but you felt more settled than when you first arrived today, most of your antsy energy replaced with good old-fashioned shyness.
"You need to get started on that Chemistry lesson," Steph reminded you as she set you up with your laptop and some snacks," And tonight, you need to remember to call Mini to tell her about your first day."
You nodded, plugging in your headphones and clicking start on the video that was set up for you. You got a decent way through your worksheet before it started numbing your brain and you rolled up the foil of your snack into a little ball and rolled it across the table to Kyra.
She frowned at first before grinning, flicking it back at you. You ducked and grabbed it off the floor to return it. Kyra caught the next shot and you threw it back with enough force that, when you headed it back, it landed in her protein shake.
You both burst out laughing, attracting stares that had you instantly quieting and looking back down at your keyboard.
"Are you being a bad influence again, Kyra?" Kim asked.
"I'm not a bad influence!" Kyra said, picking the ball of foil out of her drink and throwing it back at you.
It was still covered in protein shake so you shrieked and dived off your chair to avoid it.
"She's meant to be studying," Kim continued as you picked yourself up off the floor.
"Give her a break," Caitlin said," Surely all that schoolwork can't be good for your brain."
"That's not how it works," Kim replied.
"Let the kid have a break," Katie inserted herself into the conversation easily and you kind of envied that a little bit," She's been studying for nearly an hour now. I, for one, am pretty sure that Steph said something about making sure she socialised too."
Kim looked like she was mentally groaning but she finally relented. "Fine," She said," But you're explaining all this to Steph."
"Please," Caitlin scoffed as she beckoned you over to sit with her and Katie," She'll be delighted that this munchkin is making friends."
You face was stained red. "You can't keep calling me that," You said to her," It's embarrassing."
"Sorry," Caitlin said, not looking very sorry at all," But with Alanna and Mackenzie not here, one of us has to keep up with embarrassing you."
"Leave her alone," Steph said as she came back into the room, your saving grace.
"She's right," Katie said," We certainly can't call her munchkin, that's her Aussie nickname." She grinned teasingly. "How does pipsqueak sound?"

star player
summary ― flowers, star players and soccer
pairing ― teenager!sam kerr x teenager!reader
warning/s ― minor character injury, fluff
Tumblr media
You met Sam on the soccer field. Shocking. Barely thirteen years of age but ready to take on the world. She was on the other team and had already scored within the first five minutes of the game. She was good, really good.
Your team had ended up being better, winning 4 - 3 when that final whistle went off. Handshakes were given, and when you went to thank her for a good game you couldn’t help but congratulate her on her goal. A small smile appeared on her lips, as she congratulated you on your win.
You both walk off to your represented teams and with that seemed to be the end of your meeting. The team song was chanted by your team and parents, as the water was thrown around. You made a glance back at the opposing team one last time and smiled when you met eyes with Sam once again.
It wasn’t until a year later that you saw Sam again, another game - although this time her team took the winning goal. Once more handshakes were given and when it came to the two of you, you noted the smirk appearing on her face as you raised your eyebrows.
“That’s for the last time” she gloated, shaking your hand. You shook your head as you smiled back, “I guess the next game determines the best” you remarked back, her hand still in yours. It wasn’t until one of your teammates nudged you to move on to the next player that you two broke away. Taking one last look at Sam, you couldn’t help but get excited at the thought of seeing and playing against her again.
The next time your team played against Sam’s you were watching from the sideline cheering your team on. A few weeks before you had been involved in a rushed tackle that resulted in a torn ACL. As much as you wished to be on the field with your team you couldn’t complain at the fact that you were given ninety minutes to recklessly stare at Sam move around the field.
Her team ended up winning once again, you watched as both teams shook hands as you made your way slowly towards where the team huddle was forming. Speeches were given, getting the girls pumped for the next game and ready to have a better outcome than the game just played.
It wasn’t until the group started that break that you notice that Sam had stayed back, waiting for something. Her eyes glanced down to your injured leg before making their way back to your face. A small frown appears.
“It looks worse than it really is” you started, limping your way over to her - she matched the distance in half the time - reaching her arm out to stable you. “Congratulations on the win - again” you added, gripping her arm as her second hand landed on your waist.
She lets out a small laugh, sending her head back as she shakes her head.
“Yeah, although your team seemed to be missing their star player”.
If her hand holding your waist wasn’t enough to make you blush, the nickname definitely did the job. She seemed to smile even more when she noticed the deeper tint of red rising up on your cheeks.
“I think you might be the star player out of the two of us to be fair” you rebutted, before adding “You did score all three goals for your team today”. Her grip tightened for a second before a slow release, although her hand not moving off your body.
“You were keeping a close eye on me where you?”
“Someone has to”
It takes a second or two for your words to sit heavy between the two of you. Feeling like you said too much, you try to take a step back but that only makes her hold you tighter. Sam titles a head a little, almost like she was trying to figure you out before a smile returning back to her face.
“I like the idea of you keeping an eye out for me”.
It turns out Sam was definitely the superstar between the two of you, by the next year she had been signed on by Perth Glory. She only got better and better.
The two of you had stayed in contact throughout the years, cheering her on as she continued to move from club to club, from game to game. You were lucky enough to have been able to make it to some games either alone or with friends and family. The look on Sam’s face every time she would find you in the crowd made your heart beat just that little bit faster.
You couldn’t deny you had feelings for the soccer player. Not when you had your first sleepover and you accidentally walked in on her getting changed. Or when two months later the two of you kissed in a game of spin the bottle.
She made your days just that little bit brighter and although after countless people telling you to take your shot with her, you kept your lips tight around her. Not wanting to lose such an important friendship.
Sam surprised you on your 18th birthday with your favourite flowers and a nervous smile. The two of you spent the day kicking the ball around in your backyard, Sam telling you everything that had been happening with her and soccer as you told her about finishing high school and getting into university.
The nervous smiles continued throughout the day until your mum called you both in for cake, Sam holding your arm to stop you from walking inside for a few more moments. Turning to face her, she takes a deep breath as she gave you one last smile.
She became your girlfriend that night, and for the first time since you met Sam, your birthday wish had been answered. That night the two of you shared quiet kisses and silent giggles, your bodies tangled up with one another.
Your mum had taken a photo of the two of you when she had come in the next morning to wake you up (and that exact photo was now framed and sitting on Sam’s bedside table twelve years later). And although you didn’t know it then, every year after that one, Sam would make sure that you woke up to your favourite flowers and a card with superstar written inside.

can you write about 7 minutes in heaven with either oscar or lando for the blurb thingy
for sure darling !! chose Oscar because it seemed more fitting for my story 🫶
It was Daniel’s idea, of course it was, because it’s always Daniel’s ideas that put them in such positions. When Lando came to Australia to visit him, the Brit immediately called his teammate to organize something together, this something being a dinner at Daniel’s place with everyone available. “Everyone available” turns out to be the two Australian drivers, Lando, Heidi, you, Martin and Max and the “dinner” quickly turns into a beach party with too much alcohol and not enough responsible adults, a disaster waiting to happen.
When Oscar tells you about the plan, both laying in bed with a movie playing on his laptop, you can’t say you’re over the moon. Sure, you adore his friends and you haven’t been able to see them a lot lately, the main cause being your boyfriend’s introverted personality and his will to spend his break napping with you, the other main cause being his friends traveling all around the globe in record times just because they’re bored. But you know them enough to know how the evening will turn out and how the day after will be a mix of regrets and headaches, photos you can’t remember taking or posting haunting the internet. You’ve been here before, too many times probably, every races celebrated with glory no matter if they were good or bad.
Oscar drives the two of you all the way to the airport, traveling from Melbourne to Perth with a cranky boyfriend way more fun than expected as you tease him endlessly about his introverted self being thrown to the lions, knowing that just hours ago he was trying to convince you to call your plans off. Still, you both know he’ll enjoy the night and will be more than glad to be there when he is, his friends and colleagues an important part of his life, and well, his friends’ friends. The drive from the airport to Daniel’s ranch is filled with bets about what will happen tonight, who will be the subject of all gossips and who will be the first to breach the work subject, most likely discussing the FIA’s controversial takes because it’s probably their favorite thing to do.
Of course, the night is going as planned: most of them are smashed, even Mr “I don’t like to drink” Norris, leaving you as the only sober one, filming and taking pictures of their shenanigans while keeping an eye on them, Oscar glued to your side like a lost puppy, nursing a bottle of beer. While the party was Daniel’s idea, the game is totally Lando’s one, because of course it is. You find yourself stuck in a circle with all of them, a green bottle spinning in the middle and you can’t even understand the rules (truly, no one does. no one cares) before Martin points his finger towards you and screams that you need to go inside the house, to a bedroom, and wait seven minutes there. Max stops him in his ranting and tries to convince him that no, you don’t just wait there alone, you’re supposed to stay in a room with someone else, otherwise it’s boring and Martin nods vividly, points his finger at you once again, and commands that you stay there until someone else is chosen, leaving all of you in fits of laughter at the sheer absurdity of it all.
Finally, Oscar is the one picked by Heidi, the two of you leaving towards the house while everyone is (badly, really badly) whistling. Your boyfriend lays on the bed when you reach the room, giggling while looking at the ceiling before you join him, smiling as he turns to you and stares at you with his now famous heart eyes. You know you’re supposed to do something raunchy, that’s the whole point of seven minutes in heaven, but as you cuddle with him, you admit that this is probably way better than what the group is imagining outside. And if you tear up when Oscar softly confesses that this is heaven to him, no one has to know.
The day after, when you get up happy and well- rested despite a short night and go to the living room, you’re met with a pile of zombies sleeping on the floor and you snap a picture before going to the kitchen while giggling, preparing yourself to face six grumpy, hungover goblins when they decide to wake up.
