Hey guys, happy Sweet Smelling Saturday! Today I wish I could say I did something extra, as it's Earth Day today, but I didn't. However! I did go to a park and did a nature walk with my friends and learned about edible plants in the area. It was a lot of fun!
Anyway, about the picture! This is from a shrub in my yard called Philadelphus lewisii, also known a Lewis' mock-orange. It would be better if I had some more time and energy today, but I don't, so this is as good as it's going to get today! And that's okay.

Plant of the Day
Friday 5 April 2024
In spring the new foliage of shrubs has so much to offer. The yellow leaves of Philadelphus coronarius 'Aureus' (mock orange) lights up the woodland garden as much as any flowers. It is necessary to prune out any darker foliage shoots (reversion) that appear or they will take over.

Чубушник (жасмин садовый) 'Виргинал' (девичий)
(Philadelphus virginalis)
Mock orange (garden jasmine) 'Virginal' (girlish) (Philadelphus virginalis)
Variety 'Virginal' is considered one of the most popular varieties of Chubushnik in the world. Its double flowers have a pleasant aroma of vanilla and orange tree. Mock orange actively blooms in June and July, during this period it appears a lot of white double flowers. Their smell is not only very pleasant, but also quite strong. And at night it intensifies even more.
The fragrance of garden jasmine is often used in tea preparations. Mock orange flowers should be collected in hot weather, when the concentration of aroma reaches its maximum. Well dried in a darkened room, they are stored in glass or paper containers. When added to tea, a dry flower straightens its petals, flattens out, radiating an amazing aroma of summer. There is no better antidepressant on cold winter evenings.

Philadelphus coronarius (Sweet mock orange)
Yesterday, our Mock orange flowered and this afternoon we got a rare few minutes of sunny weather in Vancouver, so I took these photos. Our shrub hasn’t started to produce it’s lovely scent yet but that will happen in the next few days. As soon as the scent arrives, the little antennae on the bumblebees’ heads will start to twich. Sweet mock orange is very popular with the entomological community.
This species is yet another common flowering plant that arrived in Europe by way of the pleasure gardens of the Ottoman Empire. The Holy Roman emperor's ambassador to the Sublime Porte, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, introduced the Sweet mock orange to Vienna in 1562.

Postscript: I predicted that the bumblebees would show up soon and sure enough, the very next day...

really like this photo
after pottering about on gardening websites, I'm pretty certain this is a philadelphus, aka a mock orange, variety aureus. some white flowers can get boring to photograph in my experience, especially roses, but the shape of the petals is so eyecatchingly gorgeous- almost sharp.
