something i've noticed in victor hugo's writing is that he's really good at capturing a dynamic, and i'm writing this post mostly based off of what i can remember off the top of my head, so i take no responsibility if this isn't properly factual, but that's really funny when you think about enjolras and grantaire's dynamic compared to how he writes his dynamics between other men.
if you look at phoebus de chateaupers and jehan frollo in notre dame de paris, they largely resemble to be the 1400s equivalent of frat bros. they go out drinking, talk about girls, and phoebus kind of just leaves jehan to sleep on an old bag of cabbages before going off to find esmeralda. they're boys. they're brodudes who behave foolishly.
with enjolras and grantaire, their dynamic is directly described to us purely because they interact so little because they're so fundamentally different. by nature, they can't stand each other, so in person interactions are going to be limited. victor hugo, however, still chooses to prioritize their pairing despite this. he chooses to directly acknowledge their dissimilarity while highlighting grantaire's adoration for the other man. those are not dude bros. those are fairies.
while i personally dont believe that hugo initially set out to write enjolras and grantaire as lovers, but rather as personifications of political viewpoints of the time period, their existence as grounded characters in their own right who are also in love with each other has absolutely solidified its place as important within the les mis and literary community.

Esmeralda took a deep breath and asked the one question she’d been most afraid to ask. “Who is your mother?”
Claudine hesitated, looking lost. “I...I do not know her name.”
“But do you remember her?” Esmeralda pressed. “What did-what did your father call her?”
“Nothing,” Claudine said matter-of-factly. The girl seemed incapable of lying, but also had a very odd way of thinking.
Like Quasimodo.
Esmeralda flinched.
Phoebus took over. “Do you-is she-where is she now?”
Claudine’s eyes darkened in fear. “She is burning in the flames. Her soul will burn evermore.”
Esmeralda felt sick. “Is that what he told you?” she whispered.
“Those who throw away the gift of life are consigned to the flames forever,” Claudine explained.
“What-” Phoebus started.
Esmeralda felt cold, as though her blood had turned to ice, yet she could still her the roar of the fire from more than two decades before. She felt like she might throw up. “You’re saying she took her own life,” she whispered.
Phoebus stilled.
Claudine nodded. “She jumped out the highest window.”
Esmeralda felt like she’d been dealt a physical blow; she staggered backward, and Phoebus caught her before she could fall, supporting her as she wept.
Esmeralda finally regained enough control of herself to ask the girl, “But you don’t remember her name? Who was she?” She knew it was unfair, but she was desperate for the identity of this unknown woman. “What did she look like?”
Claudine thought about it. “She had dark hair. Like mine. When she fell it went up like this.” She swept up her hair and let it fall back to her shoulders.
“You mean-you saw her? You actually saw her fall?” Phoebus asked with an intensity that masked his horror.
Claudine nodded again, her eyes deep and sorrowful and confused, and Esmeralda could almost see the small child of a decade earlier, four or five or six, running to a window as a faceless woman looked back once and let herself fall.
“She looked like you,” Claudine told Esmeralda thoughtfully.
Esmeralda buried her face in her hands.

my sister and I got to see a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame musical at our local theatre the other day! I came home and filled two pages in my sketchbook with sketches. it made me realize how important it is for me to do art for myself - something I’ve fallen out of the habit of doing. I’m trying to make it part of my routine again!
