7 月分の Steam ハードウェア＆ソフトウェア調査によると、OS 種類別シェアで Linux が macOS を初めて上回っている (Phoronix の記事、 Ars Technica の記事)。 Steam では数年にわたって 1% を割り込んでいた Linux のシェアだが、COVID-19 パンデミック中にシェアが 1% 台に回復していた。7 月は 0.52 ポイント増と大幅に増加して 1.96% となった。macOS も 0.05 ポイント増加したものの、1.84% にとどまった。Steam のデータは後日秘かに修正されることも多いが、このまま修正されなければ初の快挙となる。なお、OS 種類別で 7 月に減少したのは Windows のみで、0.56 ポイント減の 96.21% となっている。 全体のデータにはなぜか記載されていないが、Linux のみのデータでは SteamOS Holo が 42.07% を占めている。これを全体のデータに当てはめると 0.82% に相当し、macOSで最も多いバージョンの macOS 13.4.1 (0.62%) よりも多い。プロセッサーベンダーは AMD が 69.18%、Intel が 39.82% となっており、ビデオカードは Steam Deck が採用する APU、AMD Van Gogh が 42.06% と圧倒的に多い。これらのことから、Linux の大幅増には Steam Deck が貢献したとみられる。 ちなみに、StatCounter のデスクトップ OS シェアデータでは Linux が 3.12% (+0.05)、Chrome OS が 3.24% (-0.89) となっており、Linux 系 OS 合計では 6.36% となる。前月との比較では 0.84 ポイント減少しているが、1 年前との比較では 2.1 ポイント増と大幅に増加している。このほかの OS では Windows が 69.52% (+1.29)、macOS が 20.42% (-0.09) となっている。

god i fucking love the phoronix forums. its so funny the way one guy will start complaining about a company because his gpu sucks or whatever aand someone has to correct him on Why it sucks or how his unique setup is at fault or whatever. and he will shoot back like "nuh uh theyre all like this, intel is a scam" and the akchually man will bomb out a HUGE essay about how WRONG the first guy is, hes just SO WRONG and it can go like this for maybe fifteen posts back and forth, involving multiple volunteer peer mediators, who cannot drag these dudes from their keyboards. The AVX-512, also known as the Advanced Vector Extensions 512 is a set of instructions that targets CPU performance by operating on multiple data points at once. Though there was initial complaint over power inefficiency and heat generation, Intel Xeon CPUs have alleviated these shortcomings which makes AVX-512 optional for optimizing server productivity. The Phoronix analysis of a benchmark test using two 64 core Intel Xeon Platinum 8592 + CPUs on an Ubuntu system with the Linux kernel version is impressive. This system, featuring 1TB DDR5 RAM and a 3TB SSD performed twice as fast on benchmarks like Embree, OpenVKL or Y-Cruncher. The OpenVINO benchmark targeting AI activities related to vision imitation and identification, five times spike in performance with AVX-512 enabled. Phoronix Analyst notes Intel’s 5th-gen Xeon processors have shown that they can run complex, AI-specific tasks quite well without the power and heat issues encountered in previous generations. On the other hand, despite all these advancements Intel is facing fierce competitive pressure of AMD especially 96-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX which has a current world record from several categories. According to a market analyst, the developments by Intel are impressive but remain still far from surpassing AMD’s offerings. In terms of server processor industry, the latest Xeon CPUs from Intel represent an important step ahead in performance and efficiency especially because they target specific tasks. Their ability to capitalize on AVX-512 without significant disadvantages marks a new age of server computing, putting AMD’s hegemony under strain and providing customers with more solid opportunities in HPC solutions.

ZLUDA позволяет «в один клик» запускать CUDA-приложения на ускорителях AMD

В течение последних двух лет, как сообщает Phoronix, AMD без особой огласки финансировала проект по реализации бинарной совместимости ускорителей AMD и приложений NVIDIA CUDA. ПО работает поверх стека ROCm, используя готовые библиотеки без необходимости адаптации исходного кода. Возглавляет проект Анджей Яник (Andrzej Janik). Созданное им решение ZLUDA с открытым исходным кодом изначально предлагало реализацию CUDA на базе Intel oneAPI Level Zero, позволяя запускать CUDA-приложения на ускорителях Intel без каких-либо адаптаций и с относительно небольшой потерей производительности. Intel рассматривала возможность поддержки разработки ZLUDA, однако от этой идеи отказалась и не предоставила финансирование проекту.
