Got more time to sleep over the past few weeks and didn’t exhaust myself with any wayward thoughts. Saving my energy for more important battles. ☺️
I began visiting garden as part of my mental-health regimen. Reading/studying near garden, helps me deal with stress. (i didn’t have photos tho 😅)
🤍🌳🍃🌿🎋
Started reading about Renal system. 🥲 Yaahs, it’s my least fav ‘cause it’s the most complex system for me. 🥲😂

Stuff I wasn't prepared for in medicine #2 : being called "nurse / sister" by patients and their families
Through the years I've been on the medblr side, I've come across a lot of posts by women in medicine venting about how they get called as "nurses" even while they're in their working uniforms, currently treating patients as a physician.
While I was always sympathetic and appropriately outraged by reading said posts, nothing prepared me for my own personal experience with it : getting called as a "nurse / sister" while on duty.
Keep in mind that over here, nurses wear their separate white uniforms, all the time, while most doctors (starting from us interns upto the senior consultants, don't usually scrub in while coming for work, scrubs are mostly reserved for operation theatres or other intervention settings) we're mostly wearing formal clothing for the major part of our shifts.
The weirdest part is this : most of my female patients never make this 'mistake'. YES, you read that right. I've come across my fair share of women coming in with problems, or a family member of a patient admitted in the wards, who came to visit. They always either called us ma'am or doctor didi (hindi / bengali for referring to an older sister, it's a way of addressing irrevocably linked to our culture, where we refer to strangers by uncle / aunty / brother / sister etc and not by professions or names)
BUT. the same can't be said for the male patients /male family members. They see a woman coming in a treating them, immediately assume she can never be the doctor. Even after we repeatedly correct them.
While my male co-interns are always referred to as Doctor / Sir without fail, the same is never true for us.
This just....feels..... dehumanising at some point. For so long, I was studying to become a "doctor", in every sense of the word. It had become a part of my identity just like my name, my gender, my other identifiers in life an an individual.
To be suddenly flung into this situation where my identity is being repeatedly questioned, despite my competency levels, or my skills, to be continuously dismissed and my words / advice not taken seriously unless it's coming from a man's mouth is just..... Infuriating tbh.
So many times I've thought of using a sharp tone, or simply yelling out (especially when you get those middle aged men as patients and you know they're literally feeling you up with their gazes, you know the kind), but I've had to hold back.
Because I'm supposed to be the rational, more understanding one. Because I'm supposed to treat them. Because I'm their doctor, at the end of the day.
Being a woman in any profession is a whole other ball game, a whole parallel struggle that men / male passing people will never truly understand.
I'm starting to realise its just the tip of the iceberg.

03.28.20 Final exam grades came out and I got 99% on the animal physiology final. I ended up with a 3.9 this quarter which is great! I have not studied a whole lot over the break (which feels way shorter than last year), mostly because the only thing I have to work from is an old syllabus and a list of textbooks that were on reserve in the library which is obviously closed due to COVID. The genetics course I am taking in spring quarter (online) doesn’t have an assigned textbook, and canvas hasn’t been published yet. I start on Monday (9:00am), so hopefully the professor is tech literate and will publish canvas before then. Wish me luck!

I would try to torrent the textbook, or get 1 day shipping from Amazon, and email the prof to clarify what the exam covers. Also ask if there are past papers or practice exams or a study guide to study with. You might also be able to find past papers online if your Uni uses canvas and forgets to delete them. You might also want to explain to your prof that students are concerned about their performance on the exam considering how much content is covered and ask if he could do a review lecture.
there is literally nothing else to refer to. this is the first year they are working with a new online platform, and the course outline is all that’s available.
on top of that, we haven’t even had a lecture from him yet?! he considers this material as basic knowledge and as a prerequisite. it’s a visiting professor from abroad so he will only be here for two weeks.

physioblr replied to your post “Being someone who gets triggered by dogs barking and jumping (due to...”
Most greyhounds don’t bark a lot! They make chatter noises, moo noises, and smile lol. They do happy spins but are not big jumpers. They are more closely related to Ethiopian wolves so they have different behaviors, most other dogs are related to grey wolves. The only time my greyhound has barked is when someone actively tried to break into our apartment or when he was sick with a tummy ache and barked once at his own fart lol. So if a date has a greyhound I wouldn’t worry too much!
Good to know, but I’m also a bit intimidated by the size of Greyhounds. :P
I’m much more of a cat person.

My last week of internship is coming and with it : my clinical thesis. Yey. But I actually like the theme I’m covering (the impact of aphasia in hemiplegic patients on rehabilitation) so the research is fun. Also, I got an A on my practical exam so :) :)

I did a quick introduction as my first post, but I've seen that there's a particular format most new studyblrs are using, so here goes!
About Me
My name is Kat, and my pronouns are she/her.
I attend a small state university in Texas. I will graduate in May of 2020 with a B.S. in Environmental Science and minors in Biology and Chemistry. ♻️
I live with my wonderful boyfriend, Benjamin, who has degrees in History and Spanish from the university I currently attend. He teaches Spanish at the local public high school.
I have 3 jobs! I babysit every Wednesday, work at the local children's museum on weekends, and I'm a peer tutor at my university during the week. The subjects I tutor are government, psychology, geology, microbiology, meteorology, and statistics (assuming I make an A in it, I'll know in about 2 weeks). 💸
I have two kitties, Minke and Weasley, and I'm completely obsessed with them.
Past Experiences
Summer 2019 - I did a Study Abroad program in Belize over Terrestrial Watershed Ecology and Tropical Marine Biology. Hopefully I'll go back next summer for an internship! 🏝
Summer 2017 - I interned at a marine wildlife rehabilitation facility with a focus on sea turtles. That's me in the picture releasing a green sea turtle!
Summer 2016 - I assisted in a microbiology lab that was creating gene libraries for coral species. I did RNA extractions for the DNA sequencing. 🧬
Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 - I assisted in a chemistry lab where we were attempting to find a series of chemical reactions that would turn carbon dioxide back into reusable carbon without using or creating hazardous materials. We weren't successful :(
Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 - I assisted (aka washed dirt) for a paleontology lab. Not gonna lie, I wasn't particularly in-the-know about what was going on. I was a junior in high school (11th grade), I was just excited to be there lol.
Summers 2010 and 2011 - I volunteered over 100 hours each summer at a nationally ranked aquarium! I usually worked with the penguins but I preferred worked in the Caribbean exhibit. 🐠
My Goals
Get into a Masters thesis-track for Fall 2020! 🎓
Maintain or improve my current GPA of 3.7
Not die (or fail) when I take Organic Chemistry I this fall semester. 😱
Become a more efficient student! I frequently use brute force to get good grades when often there's an easier, more eloquent way to go about it.
My Favorite Studyblrs

Medicine and Death : The stuff I wasn't prepared for.
These last 4.5 years of med school, have been all about learning anatomy and physiology and cases and drug reactions and clinical features on paper and fancy books..... A heaven and hell of difference from what actually practicing medicine, the reality of it, entails.
Day before yesterday a 6 year old girl died during my shift. She came in with RTA and severe SAH, admitted around 4 pm, received appropriate drugs....... around 8:30 pm I get a call-book (similar to a paging, in Western-speak) from the ward (which was already too late in coming, I realise now) that she's gasping. I was the sole on-call doc in the neurosurgery ward for the night, amidst a 40 hour shift in the general surgery ER. I go in and within 10 seconds I knew she'd already expired.... No carotids, no breaths, no heart sounds, her pupils fixed and dilated in the blank stare of the dead....her skin was still warm under the layers of sheets she was bundled in..... The oxygen pump and mask was still on, uselessly.
I kinda felt numb at that moment, tbh. Never in my life had I been prepared to face that kind of crisis.
I frantically added the emergency drugs, ran to the ward and asked the nurse to administer them stat, called the neurosurgeon visiting (who was off duty), sent him the CT scan photos as a last ditch effort, even though I knew it would be useless.
Then after an hour I had to break the news to the parents. The family belonged to the rural poor, the father was barely able to sign his name in shaky, unpracticed hands, under my written declaration of his little girl's death.
Strangely enough, it was just a matter of half an hour. A very short life ended, without any pomp or rejoice, the last breath drawn before I could even reach there to do anything meaningful.
It was the most horrible fucking experience of my life till now. I still haven't stopped to process everything, my brain went into damage control mode and shut down any and all rewinds of this whole thing, until now.
I instinctively turn to drawing/painting whenever I need to shut down and distance myself from reality. It's something cathartic and meditative for me. It's strange how not all art is born from joy and happiness. The vast seas I painted yesterday (below), well after midnight, because I couldn't fall asleep, was probably the effort of my subconscious to let my heart be free, even if for a little while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not sure I can keep doing this on and on, over and over. Right now, this whole prospect of taking responsibility for hundreds of lives each day, seems like a surreal, humongous task. Maybe after witnessing 10 or 15 or a hundred more deaths, this incident will feel insignificant, lost amidst all the other chaos. Until then, I'll continue to feel out of balance, skeptical of each and every of my decision : did I do the right thing? Was there something else I could do? What if this happened instead of that? What if....?

01.14.20. So, there wasn’t a snow day. The highly anticipated Snowpocalypse 2020 was more like a pleasant dusting. Lab was fun though for the most part. Lecture was okay. Everyone had snow on the brain though, including myself, so I didn’t get much studying done today. I’ve got my first exam next week, and I don’t feel ready at all! Wish me luck!
