Some fun facts:

the top scorer in La Liga recieves trophy Pichichi. Rafael Moreno Aranzadi "Pichichi" was a Basque player for Athletic Club in the 1910s-20s.

the first ever football match of La Liga back in 1929 was a Basque derby: Athletic Club VS Real Sociedad

Euskadi is the only autonomous community to have a team from every region playing in the top level league: Bizkaia has Athletic Club, Gipuzkoa has Real Sociedad, Araba has Deportivo Alavés. Nafarroa also has Osasuna. We used to have up to 5 teams playing, but sadly Eibar was relegated to La Liga Hypermotion (2nd category).

Basque team Athletic Club is among the only 3 teams - with Real Madrid and Barça - that are still unrelegated. The achievement is bigger because Athletic Club plays with locals only.

out of the 24 players of the NT chosen for the qualifications for the 2024 Eurocup, 8 are Basque. That's 33% of the team, when Euskadi and Nafarroa mean just 6% of the population in the Spanish state. Not bad!

El adiós al Atotxa (1993)

El viejo Atotxa (Fuente I Odio eterno al fútbol moderno).

Hace hoy 29 años cerraba sus puertas el viejo estadio de Atotxa, escenario de la Real Sociedad. En ese año el equipo vasco se mudó a su actual casa, Anoeta y Atotxa pasó a ser el campo de entrenamiento de un equipo de rugby hasta su demolición en 1999 para construir en sus terrenos edificios de viviendas.

El 5 de octubre de 1913 fue inaugurado ese mítico coliseo con un derbi vasco que terminó 3-3. El 13 de junio de 1993 la Real disputó allí su último partido venciendo 3-1 al Tenerife. El primer gol en ese estadio lo hizo el célebre Pichichi y el último el centrocampista portugués Oceano en el partido contra el Tenerife.

En Atotxa se jugaron 904 partidos de Liga, de los que la Real ganó 576. Anotó 1.958 goles y sumó 1.344 puntos, a razón de dos por victoria, como se contaba antes. El máximo goleador del viejo campo fue Jesús Mari Satrustegi, con 96 dianas.
