Pinus contorta var. contorta, also known as shore pine is an evergreen tree that can reach 50ft in height, though they’re known for growing in irregular shapes and don’t often reach their full height. As their name suggests, you can find them along the shore as they’re perfectly adapted to handle the high winds and salty air near the ocean. The small pine nuts feeds many birds along the shore, while the multitude of caterpillars that call this tree home help feed chicks. Shore pine can host as many as 200 different species of caterpillars, including the eastern tailed blue (cupido comyntas)

Me: *names my new computer Pinus Contorta because of The Expanse and trees and the symbolism of growth through fire*
My dad, who now has an app that shows him how our internet connection is and what's connected to it: who's connected to our internet with a device called "Penis Contortia"?!

Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst'
flickr
Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' by Richard Ellis Via Flickr: Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' at the entrance to the CU greenhouse. This cultivar of the Lodgepole Pine Pinus contorta came from a mutation discovered and propagated by Allan Taylor. The new candles do not initially produce chlorophyll so they are a brilliant yellow initially but will turn green in time. Because they initially lack chlorophyll, propagating this cultivar requires grafting onto a standard clone.
Allan Taylor was a linguistics professor at the University of Colorado. He was also an avid horticulturalist and passionate about about many species of trees (particularly oaks and witches brooms). The lengths to which Allan would go to propagate plants are legendary among those who knew him. He passed away in December.

Whistler, BC (No. 6)
Whistler is a collection of microclimates ranging from coniferous mixed forest on the valley floor, to slightly drier slopes, to Alpine tundra in the alpine.
The wet West Coast marine temperate climate in the valley floor is characterized by a coniferous mixed forest, with a preponderance of western red cedar—a continuation of the rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.
The slopes are slightly drier and are also coniferous mixed forest with western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), Whistler hybrid spruce (Sitka spruce and Engelmann spruce). The last is "a hybrid spruce that is unique to Whistler, aptly dubbed the "Whistler Spruce." The Whistler spruce hybrid is indicative of Whistler's geographic position—we're not quite coastal, but not quite interior". A hybrid of the wetter West Coast Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) – that ranges from Northern California to Alaska and the drier Interior Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii). Others include the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), endangered whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis).
The higher slopes transition to many species of scrub juniper, Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum), and many species of scrub willow in the genus Salix at the tree line, and to Arctic tundra like conditions in the high alpine above the tree line.

Salutations to Pinus cortorta, in the PINACEAE family! It is commonly known as shore pine.
This evergreen tree is identified by its fascicles of 2 needles, which have a somewhat twisted shape and are deep green in color. Its cones are ovoid and can be asymmetrical in shape, and get up to about 2" in length. Its bark is furrowed and dark brown to grey in color.
Pinus contorta is native to the Pacific Northwest in both coastal and inland environments. While the inland variety is adapted to fire, the coastal variety is adapted to harsh wind, salt spray, and low nutrient conditions, which cause its often contorted growth form. Mycorrhizal associations aid with the low nutrient availability.

Poetry Month: April 2024. Poem 8: 'Beyond Bergen'
I was trying to do two things here: capture the sight and sounds of the intimate world of the campfire at night, but also hint at a little narrative tension between the speaker and his two companions, Aksel and Frida.
Beyond Bergen
Sparks soar inside the hazy fountain
of smoke from the campfire.
Outside its cone of warmth,
cold squeezes both our backs.
Arrowheads of fir trees poke at the stars
and Ingot embers blush in the breeze.
“Pygmy Owl” says Aksel.
Its tiny silent passage was hardly there.
It could have been our eyelashes.
His lighter flame, sucked
into the bowl of his pipe,
frames his handsome face.
He lets the flame flap back three times.
Curly branches from a Lodgepole Pine
aptly named pinus contorta
crack and yield to the flames.
Frida’s electric torch passes us
before she crawls into her tent.
She makes it glow
like a Chinese lantern
in the Norwegian night.

Pinus contorta
It’s a pine tree that must die by fire to survive.
You see, it’s seeds only come out under extreme heat
It has to literally face the fires of hell before it can be reborn again.
Sacrificing everything it was or could be, to ensure it lives on in a better tomorrow
It was made this way, whatever cosmic cataclysm that gave us humming birds, and sea sponges, butterflies, and soaring eagles —gave us Pinus Contorta
So is it really so surprising the same star dust gave us you too?

God I’m sorry but “Pinus Contorta” is the worst name they could have picked. I *know* that it’s Latin, I *know* it’s a plant name, I *know* what it means, and yet. Still. All I can see is “contorted penis.”

The Serotinous Cones of Lodgepole Pine
The Serotinous Cones of Lodgepole Pine
Behind the scales of a pine cone lie the seeds that promise future generations of pine trees. Even though the seeds are not housed within fruits as they are in angiosperms (i.e. flowering plants), the tough scales of pine cones help protect the developing seeds and keep them secure until the time comes for dispersal. In some species, scales open on their own as the cone matures, at which point…

Death. Art by Kevin Jay Stanton, from BOTANICA.
The card for Death can represent endings as well as renewal, and sometimes the growth that comes after destruction. I chose Pinus contorta to represent it, because it’s a tree whose seeds are only released and spread after a wildfire, when the cones are exposed to high temperatures.

Not this season of The Expanse, but I love Prax and Amos so much! There is more Prax in the books but I’m not sure he’ll turn up again in the show.  I wanted so much more of these two!
