i neeeed to talk about my favorite music with somebody. i want to talk about why in every album by Frost Children the last three songs have such a different tone than the rest. i want to talk about how prevalent nature and environmentalist themes are in their music. i want to talk about how come Dorian Electra has so many biblical themes in their music. i want to talk about the ethics and politics of Alestorm's pirate metal. i want to talk about what the fuck is up with Ghost.
i want to grow i want to learn i want to work my brain while also doing something i enjoy

Friday, September 1: Running Wild, "Masquerade"
Running Wild made their name by playing fast and frantic power metal distinguished by gonzo trashcan drumming, speedy and catchy riffs and shoutalong choruses about battles and adventures of varying stripes, though more often about action on the high seas.  But Masquerade’s title track was arguably the first time Rock n’ Rolf Kasparek seemed truly enraged, and indeed it was the angriest his band ever sounded.  To be fair, the song detailed a conspiracy between government, military and church leaders to join forces and make a pact with the devil in order to rule the world (yup...), and Kasparek always had a strong anti-authoritarian streak, so the extra viciousness in his snarl made some sense.  There was also lingering resentment on Rock n’ Rolf’s part about how Running Wild was being treated by Noise Records, and Masquerade was rather quickly assembled in part to get out of their contract with the label.  Nonetheless, the sheer fury on display was startling, aided in no small part by Kasparek’s especially cantankerous production: Jӧrg Michael’s drumming was far more unhinged than his concurrent work with Stratovarius, the guitars didn’t so much harmonize as pummel and Rock n’ Rolf was practically foaming at the mouth during the borderline indecipherable chorus.  And yet “Masquerade” still had the power and charm of prime Running Wild, even if they were largely past their peak by 1995- there was a certain ineffable charm to everything they did between 1988 and 2000, even if the albums post-Blazon Stone were not always as consistent.  And the tune played like another ripping Running Wild banger, even if it felt a little misguided in its aggression.

The gathered devotees awaited the arrival of their most holy entity. As the great creature drew up to its full height, monolithic in its power, the crowd began to chant it's name:
"DUCK! DUCK! DUCK! DUCK!"

Fun weekend!
Post Content Warning: FLASHING LIGHTS BELOW CUT.
Tumblr media
On friday we went to a pirate metal concert and it was wild (in the best way possible). Three bands were performing, Heidevolk, Korpiklaani, and Alestorm. The songs slapped, but there was also some WILD stuff happenin' on stage once Alestorm came out. For example: A sudden shark chase that resulted in the shark singing and headbanging along, too.
[Video ID: The band Alestorm performing "Hangover", they are on stage while stage lights flash behind them. One of the performers is wearing a large felt shark hat while headbanging and singing. On the left side there is a Grogu plush hanging from a keyboard. On the right side there are drums with a Cthulu-Skull-and-Crossbones combination.]
Not only did we have that wild stuff with the shark and the Grogu, that big yellow blob behind the performers? It's a giant inflatable rubber duck that they dragged out on stage and blew up real-time. We watched it getting blown up, as the beak was held.

It was honestly glorious. They also had a ton of cool-ass shirts for sale. I wanna go to one of these again. It was my first in-person concert. We've been to one Virtual concert before, but in-person had a totally different feeling.
Oh, on top of all this wild shit we also got a VERY amusing instruction during the song "Wenches & Mead" by Alestorm.
"Sing along, but this time - AS DOGS.", At which the entire concert and lead singer erupted with the lyrics of "Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof" continuously. I gotta go to another one of these after that kinda glorious shit.

'Dolfy's First Concert'
I spent way too much time creating names for the members of the band, and freaking lore. Why? b/c I can.
Captain Capstan : vocals
Mary Mainsail : Guitar
Firstmate Foremast : Bass
Rigger Robbie : Drumbs
The Buccaneers of Brutality, a concept esk band that only does metal covers of Sea shanties. It is rare for them to go on tour, b/c instead of a tour bus, they have a tour boat and only play in cities with water access. sometimes this includes going up rivers.
They have been on their first world tour for over 5 years.

so I didn't mean to send that ask before it wad finished oops 😭 I also don't know if it was on anon but if it isn't just delete it please LOL
As for pirate politics, I can't say I'm too sure because I always take it at face value 😂 like I see "I'm a fucking pirate" and I'm like HELL YEAH IM A PIRATE (as in a yarr harr jack sparrow pirate)
In Magellans Expedition they talk about serving the throne and killing the traitors, also they mention traitors walking the plank in keelhauled so I suppose that's the idea of a community working better under a government right? Like get rid of those trying to threaten the government
I think some of alestorms stuff is historical too, even if it's very loosely (ex. Battle of cartagena) so maybe that's talking about past historical political values??
As for ethics, I mean killing people and encouraging alcohol abuse and theft probably isn't very accepted under any political group unless they're like a not very nice one 💀
But overall, I've seen a lot of quotes from the band about lore and meanings and stuff and Chris basically says that he's incapable of writing serious songs so it's all a bunch of shit you shouldn't take seriously 😂 there's a quote from Elliott too that says "don't mistake lore for using the same line again so we don't have to come up with something else" LOL
So it's definitely interesting and I'd love to hear what you think about it and any songs you think are inherently political/ethical but I also will probably continue to take it as it is lmaoo
(BUT ALSO tell me everything, song recs, fave band stories, share any pics you like of them because I'm a new fan - like in the last month or so lol - so I really want new content and someone to talk to about them with 😂)
i also like to imagine myself as a pirate doing pirate things when listening to their music, that's one of the reasons why i like them :)
i don't pretend to be too knowledgeable about politics, i know i'm definitely a leftist, and i think i'm more of an anarchist than anything else. i generally believe that positions of power in any kind of institution are a flaw, because they're pretty much guaranteed to get exploited by people seeking power. this is one of the reasons why i don't think very highly of most forms of government, because they have too much power concentrated in too few people.
Magellan's Expedition is one of the songs that always makes me think of the politics. from what i understand, Magellan was one of those european colonizers who worked for the monarchies of spain and portugal, so i think working for him would be pretty unethical. not to mention the fact that they're probably doing all these horrible things (stealing, killing) to innocent people in the name of the government. this is pretty much exactly the reason why people hate cops and the military where i live, and i don't think they'd enjoy songs that glorify those things. but like you said, the thing about Alestorm is that they're just silly and not meant to be taken seriously, so i never really read into it too much. it's just those times when i do start reading into it that i realize how concerning the premise is.
as for the band itself, i don't actually know very much about Alestorm, i just know i like their music lol. i've never seen them perform and given that i live on a different continent, i don't see that happening any time soon. (and don't worry, that other ask was on anon) :)

#17 please, fellow music lover!
17. Go on Spotify (or your music streaming app of choice) and put your liked songs on shuffle. Share the 5th song that plays. If you can't do shuffle pick a song at random (or as random as you can make it).
THANKS FOR THE ASK!!!!!
I love this result because, even though I’m not a metal person, this song is tied to one of my favorite memories ever. Story time:
Last year, I surprised my husband with VIP tickets to see his absolute favorite band ever, DragonForce. He got to meet them and we had incredible seats for this concert.
Like I said, I’m not a metal person, so I wasn’t super excited to be there, really just wanted to treat my husband to his own unforgettable experience.
But then Visions of Atlantis came on as the opener (dressed like wannabe Jack Sparrows) and BLEW THE HEADLINING BAND AWAY. I cannot overstate how good these silly pirate people were. Been a fan ever since. 🤘🏻🏴‍☠️
