one thing about planet coaster/zoo I really appreciate is the human design. a lot of simulation games go for very generic and conventional npc design. but I really like how the planco/zoo npcs are kinda weird and pudgy. cuz thats what people look like! they really hit this note of cartoonish and grounded with the body types and I really like it.

I still can’t stop laughing about how Planet Zoo announced they were adding the Collared Peccary to the game in a free anniversary update around the same time a famous golf course in Arizona got destroyed by a herd of foraging Javelinas.

Maybe don’t build a massive golf course in the middle of the desert and get mad when the animals whose habitat you destroyed come back to forage for food and ruin your precious water-wasting invasive grass turf.

I’ve read your blog for years and I just wanted to tell you this because I think it’s incredibly funny! I play a zoo management game (planet zoo) a ton, I’ve got 200 hours of gameplay, and the whole focus of it is to build and customize a zoo to your hearts content, and it allows for some incredibly granular customization!
Because of that, and my special interest in animal care I’ve gotten a little obsessed with making enclosures that actually would function in a real life zoo. To the point that I’ve been using AZA care guides and zoo care documents to build habitats! I’ve just finished a capybara habitat using the AZA’s animal care manual, and it’s amazing how real it looks!
Just thought you might find it funny!
Hello fellow Planet Zoo devotee! I have also put mumble mumble hours into that game. And I, too, find I am building facilities that reflect big AZA zoos - although I think that’s sheer habit on my end! (My work life balance could maaaaybe be questioned. After spending a day grinding through zoo stuff for work projects, I like to take a break and relax… by building and running a zoo!)
So here’s what I really want to know: do the in-game space, fencing, and husbandry requirements line up with the AZA ACMs? I know the game devs worked “with the zoo industry” to get it as accurate as it is, but I haven’t see anything about who. I’ve got some guesses based on things like what species are hard to get with conservation credits - lions and good male giraffe being rare is telling - but nothing concrete. If the game requirements match AZA regs, that would explain a lot!
Yes this is lovely, thank you. :)

Uh sorry if this is annoying, but if the only place you won't find mammal bias is mezozoic paleontogy, How is there a mammal bias in cambrian paleontology or ediacaran?
You’re not annoying!!! In paleozoic and older, there’s a hyperfocus on things that are considered mammalian “ancestors”. So focusing on early chordates in the Cambrian, or potential bilaterans in the Ediacaran. You’d be amazed at how consistent it is

I was at a loose end so I decided to try out Marty's updated shaders in Planet Zoo.
Shaders used (in order):
Launchpad (utility)
ReLight
RTGI
AA & Sharpening
Prod80 Bloom
The Moods MultiLut (LUT 12)
Pirate Vibrance
Cinematic DoF
Deband
Prod80 Film Grain
Comparison with/without ReShade
Comparision with ReShade without ReLight/with ReShade with ReLight - I added a coupe of lights up in the tree clearing at the end of the path to draw the eye towards it. You can use it for environmental interest and not just for dramatic portraits. The new ambient lighting setting is a lovely addition to the shader.
