For today's Zooly "Chickens" prompt, I chose to draw a barred Plymouth rock because, well, they're FUN to draw! Can you find all the chicks? The Plymouth rock is one of my favorite breeds that I have in my flock. They're great egg-layers, laying around 200 brown eggs a year, but as a dual-purpose bred I also raise a few each year for meat. 100 years ago this was the most popular breed of chicken in the United States. While the exact origin of this breed is a bit contentious, genetic analysis shows the main ancestor of the Plymouth rock is the similarly barred Dominique. Ink pen with Copic markers.

Portrait of a Barred Rock hen.
Kind, gentle, friendly and curious. They work hard too; laying many large brown eggs.
It is hard to find better hens than these.

No one except for me can tell Churro and Tiki apart. I admit, I used to struggle too and mostly relied on mannerisms for a while (Tiki is a kind and gentle soul, Churro’s a little 🤬). Now I can tell them apart even from a distance. Their voices are different and to me at least, their faces look completely different. I always say “Churro’s Grumpy and Tiki’s Dopey”. Here are close-up shots of the two and maybe other people can see it this way? Churro is the first pic and Tiki is the second.

Backyard Chickens: A Master Post
So you want your own little dinosaurs to eat your table scraps and make breakfast for you in the sunny months. Well! I am here to provide a quick starter to getting your own flock set up - and yes, for urban chickens as well.
Things to consider:
What can you have? Local laws usually dictate how many chickens can be kept per household/acre. Laws can vary by state and city. Look this up first. You can usually keep more bantams (miniature chickens) than their full-size cousins, and with chickens being so social I do recommend bantams for urban/suburban yards.
What weather will they be exposed to? Indoor chickens can generate a lot of dust, but small outdoor coops can be difficult to heat safely. Dual purpose breeds are usually more cold-hardy than layer varieties, and everybody likes fresh water and shade in the heat. Frozen water bottles left outside to thaw can keep birds cool, too.
What will eat them? I have had little losses to foxes, personally, and more to neighborhood dogs. Raccoons are nearly everywhere in North America and will tear open fences to eat your babies. (I would know. I've had to deal with the aftermath.) Rabbit hutches are a good starter for bantams, but a good coop made of wood and a yard made of hardware cloth or dog fence panels (and with netting on top for hawks/owls) will keep out most things. Weasels/mink will fit through gaps bigger than an inch, so be careful of that, too.
What do they need? Chickens love to scratch and forage (and some can fly short distances and modest heights) so if you're letting them on the lawn be prepared for them to eat it - no pesticides on that turf! At night, they prefer to sleep on perches/something with a bit of height to it and do best locked in their coop where other critters can't eat them. A place to nest and lay their eggs in their coop (otherwise they will find their own little secret place, God help you find it) and a place to dust-bathe (like chinchillas) to help keep mites and lice out of their feathers. They'll also need some grit and calcium - crushed oyster shell (or their own eggshells) will help.
Where can I get them? Many farm and feed stores like Tractor Supply Company will sell baby chicks during the spring, but if you're looking for specific bantams or unusual breeds I recommend checking out your State Fair or a Poultry Association show [American version located here] and check it out. They're free admission, generally, and almost every show has people who bring birds to sell. While the demographics tend to slant pretty "red" I have seen plenty of blue hair and pronouns at poultry shows. Facebook can also be a great resource.
How do I get everyone to get along? Chickens are notoriously territorial, with a vicious pecking order that make Mean Girls a documentary. Chickens who are raised from chicks together will get along best, but if you need to add more I would introduce two or more at a time (so the newbies have a friend) and put them in a nearby yard/cage for a few days until everyone has worked out their opinions through the bars of a cage. Some breeds are sweeter than others (buff orpington) and some are.... spicy (Plymouth rocks).
Saro's Personal Breed Recommendations
Dual Purpose (cold weather) - Black Australorps , Buff Orpington, New Hampshire Reds are all generally pretty good natured and calm. The platonic ideal of a chicken.
Layer breeds (warm weather) - Leghorns are the go-to, but I have a soft spot for Hamburg as well. And of course, who wouldn't love a chicken who lays dark brown (Marans) or green/blue (Ameraucauna) eggs?
Bantams - D'Anvers with their little beards are my all time favorite and have the biggest personalities in my experience, but Old English Game (even more zippity) and Black Sumatras (all black, even down to the skin, and shockingly calm in hand) are high on the list as well. And everyone loves the fluffy-faced Silkie or feather footed Cochin.
Hopefully this is enough to get you started! Feel free to send me questions or add on with a couple of your own tips (especially non-US people and those with indoor chickens). I've been raising them for eggs, pets, and for show since 2005, but I am always eager to learn.

Hi, these are my chickens
Tumblr media
There are 6, this one is just very shy
Tumblr media
I give her seeds separately sometimes so she doesn’t get chased off by the others, who are more confident
I love them!! I really like seeing chickens that get the space to run around and do chicken stuff (or choose to hide and do chicken stuff.)
One of my chickens is a Plymouth Rock like yours (the black and white barred one) her name is JoJo (after the joestars) and she escapes the pen every day to lay eggs under various bushes and pick bugs out of my garden. She's not smart enough to get back in so she comes running at us when we go out back. She knows we'll put her back, and she can be with the rest of the girls.

Think fast, favorite chicken breed?
UHH UMM!!!
Okay so I know everyone loves Silkies because of their funny little hairdos, and they ARE adorable, but i think both the silver penciled and barred rock varieties of Plymouth Rock chickens have SUCH beautiful coloration and patterns in their feathers!

You seem to know a bit about chicken colours and I do not because they confuse me lol. Do you have any idea what this chick will look like fully grown?
Tumblr media
I was fairly sure it was a Buff Orpington x Plymouth Rock/Aracuana rooster (he’s barred) but it’s sibling is black/gold laced and idk if that cross could throw that.
Lacing, autosomal barred and penciling are just refined Pattern Gene which is dominant and can express as messy lacing in its heterozygous, unrefined form like a cockerel i culled named Kerberus (check the tag to see his lacing) it does look like this chick in the picture is starting to express Pg already which is likely inherented from the buff orpington.
Now for the buff orpington i already know what her approximate genes are but for the rooster i only know that he is barred, probably black so ill go off of that.
So a buff orpingtons genes are usually eb based then have s+/s+ Db/Db Co/Co Pg/Pg and Di/Di sometimes with Cb/Cb in some lines.
So Gold, Dark brown, Columbian, Pattern gene, Dilute and Champagne Blond respectively to dilute the brown which gets you a solid buff colored bird. Notice that orpingtons are homozygous for Pattern gene so you can assume all chicks out of a buff hen will express pattern gene (some more visible then others) hence the lacing in the sibling despite not having a laced bird (i assume) in the equation.
Telling what color a chick will be as an adult via chick down can be tricky because multiple "unknown" genes control chick down but dont impact adult plumage but i can say that this chick doesnt look like it will be barred and it will be gold based. It will likely express columbian and dark brown to some degree. Because the father likely has some melanizing genes the chicks will inherit some of that so i expect a gold based bird (might look brown) with a more messy pattern carrying some dilute genes that likely wont express. I dont know what base dad is on so i will also assume that this chicks base color is het for eb since they would have gotten it from the orpington.
Hopefully this helps a bit! Beeper is buff Columbian and looked kind of similar as a chick just beeper is expressing more dilution.

Favorite type of chicken, go!
~Jasper of @jasper-pagan-witch
My favorite type of chicken is the Barred Plymouth Rock, which look a lot like zebras. I find them to be independent and feisty, yet also open to human friendship if it serves their interests enough. Just like me, the Fool Chicken.

Ok time to scratch/vent crow brain now;
Things the Gato wants to has as a sorta-collection. It literally just lists Feathers, an egg and Anime Figures, cause brain said it’d have more than that for me to write on this list and it lied due to forgetfulness
First one- Feathers. Older me understands that legally best not to collect feathers that aren’t either hunting-game birds or domesticated birds, so makes this list scuffed as I only know a few birds that match that.
Tumblr media
Male pheasant tail feathers. Cause lovely stripes.
Tumblr media
Guniea Fowl Feathers, cause funky spots.
Tumblr media
Peacock feather is actually one I’m not dying for weirdly enough, but wouldn’t mind as the top-off if I had other feathers, maybe I’d be more interested if it was from a funky colour morph peacock or something.
cutting in readmore cause this list is gonna be various the deeper we go
Tumblr media
Fucking Sebright chicken feathers, either silver or gold morph tbh, and is the breed that always reminds me that there is prolly an untapped enjoyment for domestic birb feathers.
Tumblr media
Plymouth Barred Rock feathers. STRIPES AGAIN!!! zebra chimkin!!!
Tumblr media
Welsummer feathers. Neck or body cause wtf man, how they patterned like that. Is this a bird or a mosaic?!
Tumblr media
Hamburg feathers. This is assuming that the feathers look like what I think they look like; white with black at the ends.
WE ARE SURPRISINGLY DONE WITH THE FEATHERS, not cause I wouldn’t mind others but cause I can’t think of any (the last two chickens were googled ones with me trying to find neat patterned breeds if it wasn’t obvious)
Tumblr media
DRAINED EMU EGG. CAUSE GREEN AND FANCY AND THERES WEIRDOS IN THE ODD PARTS OF THIS PROVINCE THAT GOT EMUS
Anime figures since that’s the next one that crossed my mind, being most are expensive as fuck, I don’t see getting any unless I get super lucky. Not really into the ecchi/lewd types but the pretty/cute? absolutely
Tumblr media
Gura Nendroid
Tumblr media
Marine Nendroid (surprising entry since I don’t watch her but her pirate motif and colour designs hit the right spot)
Tumblr media
Ironmouse Nendroid
Not gonna show pictures but like, most Miku Nendroids, Sakura, catgirl, any of the cute themed Mikus are a yes plz
Tumblr media
Okayu figurine, cause catgirl bias
Tumblr media
Chocolate/Vanilla nekopara figurines. Cause catgirl bias, I have not played the games (seeing streams of the games makes me want to play said games even less lmao). Azuki wouldn’t be bad either.
Googling pics made me realize there are a lot of cute catgirl figurines from various franchises. Many of those others would be cute too.
