tomorrow the class begins a new brief, Recycle. objects used are ones that are no longer used and put aside to be forgotten about. however, these once forgotten objects can be brought back to life with clever lighting and use of composition and imaginative backgrounds. I suppose its kind of vintage photography. however, I have to say, this brief is slightly similar to the Cheap brief carried out in block one. my task tonight is to search and unwanted object that can be loved once more with the aid of special photography techniques. below are 5 ‘traditional’ still life images,
this image was taken (and is actually a camera I have in the house) by Peter Zentjens. he specialises in work with a vintage feel to it, to achieve this he adopts a technique, Painting with Light, this enables the correct mood to come across (http://www.zgallery-art.com/tags/still+life/).
Polina Plotnikova is a fine art photographer, however, enjoys still life. for Polina, still life is solely down to how far the imagination can go, the possibilities can be limitless (https://www.polinaplotnikova.com/section863284.html).
this image was shot by Laurie Frankel and Diane Gatterdam. the black background brings out the vivid colours of the objects; the food, plastic container and white box (https://12453837photo2016.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/still-life/).
this image of the used cigarettes was taken by Irving Penn, a strange object to take a photograph of however, there is an artistic quality rather than a beauty like the models he would shoot for the glamour magazines such as Vogue (https://irvingpenn.org/still-life).
the final image to be shown was taken by Harold Ross, he like Peter Zentjens used the technique Painting with Light to highlight the texture of the leaf and to help bring out the golden yellow colour. this was made vivid by the black charcoal background (https://www.haroldrossfineart.com/bio).
PLAN - initial I was going to shoot an old camera with its original box and some old film, however I did this for my Photography NQ so I think something different. I have done nothing but rack my brains thinking what have I got that is something old and not used? nothing!!! then I received an email from one of the lecturers stating that the brief had altered slightly. objects to be shot could be used, worn or tired items. again racking my brains, I couldn't think of anything. then it came to me. my running medals, they aren't worn as such or used but they have been put in a drawer and forgotten about. so the plan is to place my medals amongst my running gear (running shoes, shorts, top). I would like to use the light to bring out the depth of the metal, the colour and the detail.
This was my set up at the beginning of my Recyle shoot. As you can see there are my gym gear and running medals from the past I took out a canon eos 6d, 50mm and 100mm lens. Later on I moved to another station and made a black backdrop. I then decided to use a different lens, 70-200mm. as you can see from the following contact sheets, my initial images were quite busy, I then went for the less is more look. for me today was very much a practice/experiment afternoon to help inspire and create more ideas, which actually worked. I now have an idea where some of the medals (which have been kept in a dark drawer and not seen the light of day in years) will be hanging above my running shoes (which are old and worn). the medals will remain the main focal point with the running shoes out of focus in the background. admittedly my item/s are not antique or old rusty metal but they are worn and forgotten in the true sense of the word.
okay, I, as I ever do have changed my mind about my Recycle brief. I wasn't to keen on the medals and used running shoes. after reading the brief again, it states that up-cycled object can be used. therefor I am going to use a wooden log that has been up-cycled to a candle holder, similar to this,
as stated above I changed my recycle object to an up-cycled piece of driftwood made into a candle holder. I tried various lighting positions from directly above the object to above the above the camera but facing the object. however, as I was wishing for a warm ambient look for my object, one that would being out the texture and colour of the wood I decided to use a reflector (using the gold side). my light (with soft box) was on my left and I was shooting straight on the object. the light was shining on the object but hitting off the gold reflector. this produced a warm effect which I was far more satisfied with than the previous shots. below are some shots from the morning studio time and afternoon studio time. out of all the images below I picked out 16 images that I was happy with and optimised them in Adobe Bridge. one of the 16 images will go towards my portfolio.
Ciao,
vi giro la comunicazione di Adele Ross in merito a questa iniziativa interessante.

Malaria is a short film that depicts the downfall of an ordinary hard-working US citizen, who loses his job, is bitten by a mosquito, and descends into a fever and sickness. While being ignored by those surrounding him and finding himself in the darkest of places, this citizen's journey ultimately leads to him with no other option than to live in the streets - houseless.
It is a metaphor showing how quickly and unexpectedly, one small event can be catastrophic.
As filmmakers, we learned a lot from making this film, so we decided to create a campaign - #houselessnothomeless. With this campaign, we aim to dig into the collective consciousness and bring awareness to the homeless crisis in Los Angeles, currently one of the most pressing issues in the City.

Quote of the week: “Well I didn’t expect (insert ANY program here) to be stressful, but here we are!”
Let me take everything in:
1. Ice Dance: I’m honestly stoked for H/D to win as I felt like they were up and coming all these years and they just needed that edge to beat out the Shibs and C/B. But I’m a Shibs fan before any other ice dance team (the vlogs probably contributed to that), and I’m so heartbroken for them. They look DEVASTATED. If I’m being honest, I didn’t think their FD was right all season long and they messed it up at the GPF and Nationals (Alex at GPF and Maia at Nationals). I would love some serious edits to this dance for them to clinch Olympic bronze. This just proves that ALL teams are serious Olympic bronze contenders. I want so badly for the Shibs to get it but they need to edit their FD. Also, I don’t think C/B have EVER gotten bronze before...? (correct me if I’m wrong)
2. Men’s: I already said what I wanted with this, but I’m glad they chose the right Olympic team for the Men’s. It’s a huge controversy for non-skating Twitter about Adam clinching a spot and Ross being left behind. Like I said, life goals for domestic life partners Adam and Ashley!
3. Ladies’: I’m still sad about Ashley. She had every right to be angry because the PCS was marked down from what she usually had at international competitions. Huge slap in the face she wasn’t even selected for worlds! The more I think about it, the Olympic team does makes sense (let’s be honest though if Bradie wasn’t so consistent she wouldn’t be there), but the fact that so much politicizing went down before the ladies went on the ice is heartbreaking.
Soundbite: If they were going to bump Ross Miner from the Olympic team, why didn’t they do it to Polina in 2014, where Mirai and Ashley were both more qualified than her? INSTEAD, we had people calling USFSA racist for Ashley being on the team instead of Mirai and people shit-talked Ashley for years, even though it was Polina vs. Mirai, not Mirai vs. Ashley.
The life of a figure skating fan. THIS SEASON IS CURSED. CURSED I TELL YOU.
