🪻🌱🐝 💜 🌿 ✨ // violets & violet miner bees // part of my natives + pollinators series // gouache on paper
tiny violet miner bees (Andrena violae) are a specific pollinator: they pollinate wood & dog violets in the Northeast, and show a strong preference for blue violets. letting your grassy yard rewild itself and grow violets every spring not only lets you make violet syrup, it also gives violet miner bees their most important food source and increases local pollinator diversity.

White-winged dove / paloma alas blancas (Zenaida asiatica), perched on a saguaro blossom.
The dove has been burying its head deep in the flower for a taste of nectar; its head is glowing with a golden blush of sticky pollen.

Spring is here!!! 🌸🌷🌺
A bonus post to celebrate the season and first new photos of the year! And what a beauty of a butterfly, too!
I like to spice things up by choosing my photos at random from the backlog, so we'll still be seeing last year's bugs for a while, but who knows what's happen after that.

I’m restoring a backyard that needs some love. I decided to fill in the bare areas with 3 types of clover instead of grass. I’ve been spreading seeds between the rain.

You know how some flowers have really long nectaries, and they're pollinated by moths, bees, flies etc. with correspondingly long tongues? Only just now learned the reason for that:
The whole reason the flowers lure insects with nectar is to get them to coat themselves in pollen, right?
But insects are neat freaks. They don't want gross pollen all over them 🙁 So, they keep evolving longer and longer tongues, so they don't have to stick their heads in it. But the flowers keep evolving longer and longer nectaries, so the insects have no choice but to mash their heads in it and go home with gross sticky yellow crumbs all over them 🙁🙁🙁 At least bees made the most of it...
