This is maybe a complicated question but what sources (which for this purpose includes both novels and sourcebooks) would you recommend for learning about drow lore?
For Forgotten Realms drow lore specifically... I haven't read all of it by a long shot! Keep in mind that Menzoberranzan is one of many cities while you read these!! I haven't gathered all information about what different drow cities are Out There, but out of what I've read, I would recommend:
Sourcebooks:
Drow of the Underdark (SECOND EDITION DND, this is the TSR one. You want the one written by Ed Greenwood, NOT the third edition sourcebook of the same name). Some of it is editor mandated (such as prosthetics) but it's still a pretty good source. Should be available on archive.org or floating around on websites, I don't know if you can actually pick it up physically anymore.
Menzoberranzan Box Set (AD&D box set): Available on archive.org if you can't find it elsewhere. No account needed. Explicitly expands on Menzoberranzan-as-trade-hub, more details about the Houses, etc., all things that don't fit in novels.
Underdark (3rd edition supplement) - Play supplement for the Underdark. Expands more on non-Menzoberranzan locations and Underdark adventures and resources.
Out of the Abyss (5e adventure module) - covers a lot of the Underdark, including Menzoberranzan. You get a snapshot of Menzoberranzan in 5e as well as a bunch of other Underdark stuff.
Novels:*
War of the Spider Queen (Dissolution, Insurrection, Condemnation, Extinction, Annihilation, Resurrection): Six books, takes place during an event called the Silence of Lolth. Varied perspectives. Gives different views of various parts of drow society.
Liriel's trilogy (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker): Three books by Elaine Cunningham. Very different protagonist from Drizzt, gives some context and greater fleshing out of the conditions priestesses go through in Menzoberranzan.
Side stories: Rite of Blood (prequel), The Direct Approach (takes place mid-trilogy), Answered Prayers (epilogue). You can find Rite of Blood in Best of the Realms vol 1. Direct Approach and Answered Prayers are in Best of the Realms vol 3, which can be found online in (cough cough) places, I don't think it's in print any longer. Drizzt's books: The character that quite literally started it all in Forgotten Realms, at least as far as drow publishing history goes. If you're buckling in for the marathon: Here is a slideshow of what to expect, with a text transcription.
Here is a reading order.
If you just want a crash course to get basic Menzo lore into your face:
Dark Elf trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn only if you're invested in Drizzt's story because that's his story of how he gets to the surface). Generations (Timeless, Boundless, Relentless). Generations revisits the Homeland timeline from the view of Jarlaxle and Zaknafein, both characters you'll be introduced to in the Dark Elf trilogy. *There is also Lady Penitent, that follows on from the end of WotSQ. I have read it, but it's not included in my overview because it explicitly addresses drow lore about their origins that as far as I can tell has been retconned as the editions advanced. However, if you are interested in reading it regardless, it is a trilogy with the books Sacrifice of the Widow, Storm of the Dead, and Ascendancy of the Last.
Peripherals:
(insert screaming about polyhedron and dragon magazine, i haven't even begun to go through all that yet, but if you want another example of a 'good drow' in the 2e era that isn't Drizzt, I recommend Polyhedron 97 which you can find here, which gives an example in Dusk, a drow tutor.)
ANYWAY UHH hope this helps a bit lmao. There's so much! And a lot of it is not consistent between editions either!

Notes about my character design: confessions, how and why Githyanki influences my work, personal experiences, silly ideas, My games, and more I guess
If you don't follow me and just found this I have something to say first: Be welcome, hope this text doest sound pretentious, I'm Vikintor, I made some obscure games (Teocida, Tamashii and Estigma), they're available on Steam and consoles as well.
You might notice that my "original" character designs are being heavily influenced by the Githyanki these days, especially their "classic" designs from Fiend Folio to "Rise of the Githyanki" published in Polyhedron and "Knights of the lich-Queen" in Dungeon Magazine, and of course, mixed a little with what I call "modern" design (I also like how the Githzerai give me Jedi vibes, yes, Jedi from Star Wars). The less human it looks while maintaining some human proportions, the better. And that's why I love the old "classic" alienish designs the most.
Tumblr media
Why D&D Gith's?
Confession time; I never really cared that much about Dungeons & Dragons before I discovered the Githyanki, and they're the only race in D&D that I actually care about, especially for the storytelling and roleplay possibilities based on their lore. As someone who favorite character designs ranges from D'vorah from Mortal Kombat, Undyne from Undertale, to Lilith from Diablo, liking the look of the classic Gith was easy for me, and boe they are rad.
Tumblr media
Quick context on who they are (you can skip if you know them or don't care):
Githianky are a D&D race know as humanoid creatures (mostly gray, green and yellow skin toned) with a rigid militaristic background. Raised to serve their Lich-Queen and destined to die for her (and by her, but some don't know that part). They were slaves of an illithid empire in the past and after being led to freendom by Gith (A woman named Gith, there's no Gith races before her), their race was splited in two; The Githyanki believes they are the real children of Gith and the Githzerai believes the Githyanki still slaves, not from illithid but the queen. plus: Githianky live in cities build on the corpses of fallen deities (that's metal).
Most of the Githyanki are considered evil, as some go on raid campaigns to steal from another planes (they love precious stones and gold, and they can be seem as pirates, but instead of ships they ride red dragons thanks to a pact made with Tiamat). Their complexity creates a bunch of What-If scenarios that I'm interested in: like; did you know that religion is forbidden to the Githyanki (Only Lich-Queen Clerics are permitted), but many of them secretly worship other gods. And how crime and punishment works on their society (kinda don't works at all, so a lot of them are afraid to look for justice), and how Githyanki monks exists in their society but faces prejudice (Githaynki monks are often seem as Githzerai spies), And you have stories about the Gith rebels that believes the Githyanki and Githzerai can be unified as only "children of Gith", as the same time their leader is way too controvertial and self-centered, and how some of these rebels befriend humans (which is a taboo), or how their society hates every non-Githyanki but are polite and refined among their own kind, which is often confusing and complex as they are known for their aggressive propaganda among themselves and how they kill each other during their insane militaristic raising. They also often do parties, play and write songs and have fun, there's also half-Githyanki/half-dragons superwarriors created in a secret experiment led by the Lich-queen (those don't care about the Githyanki society and aren't friendly to them), and them you still have the Githzerai (neutral Gith monks that despise the Lich-Queen and have their own society and traditions) and the Githvy (rogue Gith's that aren't Githyanki or Githzeray, who often tries to live among other races).
Ahh?
Of course I don't know everything about them and maybe there is some misinterpretation on my part, some of the content was created over the years and unfortunately most of it was never published or translated into my idiom, so I have to translate it myself, but I'm not writing this to convince people to like them as much as I do. I'm sharing this to bring out what and how it inspired me.
So, what this have to do with me?
As someone who likes weird ambiguous characters and enjoys fantasizing with what-if scenarios; discovering that lore on D&D made me realize how much prejudice I had with D&D. If you say to me "This rpg race is totally evil or totally good" I can only answer: "Impossible. Individual characters are more complex than that, I want to explore the exceptions". If all are evil, I want some trying to discover what means to be good, and want some to fail miserable, and want some to learn something from that experience, if they're all serious, I want some to be silly and weird.
I'm far from a real writer (whatever that means), but I like fantasizing about atypical situations and writing about them, which is why I wrote neutral demon-like creatures for Tamashii and Teocida in the first place, even when I still lacked more maturity for that. I'm also interested in these exceptions in rpg lore and improving those aspects as I write about them, which is why D&D Githyanki inspired my current design.
But how it inspired me:
Just like many fantasy stories were created during sessions of tabletop RPG campaigns, I became interested in Gith-exclusive games thanks to discovering content like Fiend Folio and "Rise of the Githyanki" and "Knights of the Lich-Queen" (both Gith centred games focused on Gith players, with few exceptions), which is why I became way more obsessed with them. And damm, a videogame like BG3 having Githianky as a playable race is everything I hoped for (I'm not interested in BG4 if there's not a single playable Gith race. I just want to keep creating weird Gith girl characters and make them break things and form a band named Githgang), but I'm not here to talk about BG3, sorry.
So Gith's was my first inspiration to write my own RPG races with their own language, traditions, dogma, taboos, and designs. I think about how something like this could happen in the universe I've been working on since Tamashii. But I'm not going for something complex, but rather thinking about characters that I would create for my Gith campaigns could be another type of character if I create them in another position, another world with different laws, instead of just roleplaying as Githanky forever.
As I can't write Githyanki characters without it being some sort of fanfic (my fault for not going for something more common like wizards, orcs and gnomes), I still at least being inspired by them.
After reading a bunch to roleplay as Gith characters or just to fantasize about it, their personalities, and how they react to the world still something that is organically created while I'm assuming that character and playing around, this doesn't need to be bound to a specific lore. I'm being redundant at this point, but you get the idea, that's how the brazilian character Ozob was created in the 90's (He was a character created during a Cyberpunk tabletop RPG session, and then became an original character with books and merchandize in Brazil until CD Projekt Red got the rights to put him in the Cyberpunk 2077 for real)
Therefore, I can say that part of what may come in the future is the result of my experiences and inspirations with D&D mixed with all my other inspirations, such as H.R Giger, biomechanical horror, Screaming Mad George's style body horror, esoteric/exoteric references, industrial music and atmospheric, creepypasta, etc. It might be weird, or not, maybe a little silly or edgy as always, but I don't know what to do besides accepting the results, keep moving forward, and have fun in the process.
The first character as an Avatar:
"Astral of Latanael" still a working name for the first character I made inspired by Gith. The draft for her is: She is a Mhold'eze, a zombie-like servant bonded to her preceptor, a necromancer who serves as her mentor. Mhold'ezes inherit part of their master's powers and are often used as an extension of their master's will where they cannot be present, always receiving an important task, or mission as soon as they are born (like Feucirl and Pleroma of Teocida, except that Pleroma is not a necromancer). This is the first draft of the original character that I'm using as an avatar, but I do plan to work more on this silly lady and Latanael (her Necromancer) to include them in my game, or games, or more than that. It depends of what I decided.
Ok, just a quick look on how Astral looks right now, before I made more changes.
Congrats if you read until here, I'm surprised if you really read more than 1500 words of some weird dude talking about why silly D&D "pirates" inspired him to keep creating more silly weird angry girl characters.

389. Various Authors - Polyhedron #23 (May 1985)
Tumblr media
Well, all sources I have available tell me this is the May 1985 issue of Polyhedron, however the cover and content are clearly April Fool's themed. So, it's probably the case that this issue would have been sent during the month of March/April to subscribers (this wasn't really being sold widely in stands, being mainly a subscription perk for RPGA members). If you aren't familiar with the magazine publishing business this is usually the way it is: the date on the cover means when you take the issue down from sale rather than when it's put on sale.
Tumblr media
But hey, this gives us a ton of fun stuff in the quite short magazine (some 30 pages). To star off we have a great cover by the always amusing Tom Wham, a game designer and illustrator which has an unmistakably whimsical style, and there are references to the articles inside the magazine on the cover, which is pretty fun. There are humorous articles inside about Gargoyles, funny campaign encounters, songs for your party to sing while dungeoneering and even a silly class by Gary Gygax: The Ultimist.
Tumblr media
There's also serious content here, mainly represented by the second part of the adventure module "In the Black Hours" that had started out in the previous issue and fortunately didn't take a turn for the humorously zany in this one.

Metalocalypse #38: “Black Fire Upon Us” (a.k.a. “Dethrelease”) | September 8, 2008 - 12:00AM | S02E18
A double episode, and a season finale! This one is about Dethklok finally releasing their record and playing a concert in the clouds in a floating polyhedron. The various factions of Dethklok’s antagonists show up to the after-party in an attempt to compromise Dethklok once and for all.
The FREAKING EPIC METER is off the FREAKING CHARTS here PEOPLE. This one feels great, in all honesty. Lotsa good funny scenes and dramatic brutality. On the funny side (hey, I should rename the blog to this maybe?? Adult Swim: on the funny side. I like it!) is Toki's descent into alcoholism and the band’s dysfunctional way of dealing with it, lengthy digressions where the band plans to master the art of sucking their own dicks, Murderface’s stint at taking fire safety seriously (Do you think Murderface gets the lamest subplots because he’s the funniest character? SOUND OFF in the youtube comments below), and a very funny scene where the members of Dethklok get distracted by doing funny voices they can do.
The concert scene is genuinely impressive. I think that the animation on this show qualifies as “crappy”, but it manages to be good enough to be immersive, and a lot of it is fucking cool. The launch of the polyhedron (that transforms into a floating stage) has a lot of fetishistic Heavy-Metal Magazine style drawings, and I found myself really appreciating the design of the show.
This one has a lot of callbacks to previous episodes, but I maintain that almost none of it matters. The world of the show feels so rich in setting up the idea that Dethklok is the biggest entity in the world, and that naturally lends itself to conflict and having enemies. The concept is, at its heart, absurd, but the show sorta acts like it doesn’t know that. I think viewers who tune in on a story-arc episode of Metalocaylpse might feel like they’re missing something, but almost none of the humor relies on knowing deep lore.
I thought the final blow-out of the episode was particularly cool and well-done, and it was affecting in the way a cool action sequence with weighty consequences should be. But as I watched I sorta had a self-conscious debate in my head over the nature of my enjoyment for the show. The ultimate joke of Dethklok being huge shitheads who don’t deserve their status (who would?) weighed on my mind while the serious, epic music played while the closing credits rolled. It’s part of the humor for sure, but sometimes the show is good at making you forget that it is. There’s nothing truly wrong about thinking “these are my guys and I want them to win on my show”, but there must be fans out there who for them that’s their predominant feeling they feel towards these characters. It’s interesting to think about, is all!

I was legitimately shocked that Robot Chicken portrayed the Revenge of the Nerds rape as being a bad thing. Genuinely much more progressive than I would have given 2008-Robot Chicken credit for.
Agreed! I can imagine an alternate sketch where the punchline is the Richard King lookin' guy approaches Darth Vader to sadly report "somebody got pussy by disguising as you" and Darth being like "WHAT! NOOOOOOOOOOO" and crushing his windpipe. My George Lucas said no.

TTRPG Advice.
Just a few notes for GMs out there. Did you know much of the same TTRPG advice we see online now is actually just a rehashing of conversations had many times over back in the day?
Someone mentioned this the other day and they’re right for once. Photo by Kenneth Jencks on Pexels.com When it comes to fantasy TTRPG advice or debates for that matter, we’ve been rehashing the same exact comments since the hobby began 50 years ago. Letters to Dragon Magazine and Polyhedron back in the day all asked many of the same questions and covered the same advice. Much of what we see on…

12 vile vortices magnetic fields
Tumblr media
The Bermuda Triangle is an area in the North Atlantic Ocean, forming a triangle between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. “Science is defined in the dictionaries as the pursuit of the unknown, yet science today is coming more and more to insist that it not be bothered with this, and it has reached a point where anything that is not already known is frowned upon.” - Ivan T. The world grid ley lines map shows how these sites correspond. This article shows significant places where we find unusual architecture or where ships and planes disappeared. It appeared in the article, The Twelve Devil’s Graveyards Around the World. Saga magazine published Sanderson’s grid in 1972. So, today travelers still avoid these areas if possible. Sailors and pilots frequently report instruments that fail. The spots around these places are an unusual number of marine and aircraft disappearances. These are locations with strange and unexpected electrical and magnetic activity. Sanderson identified 12 areas he calls Vile Vortices. 12 Vile Vortices on Becker-Hagens Grid Map We’ll focus our attention on twelve of these well-known sites. The Becker-Hagens gird (2) shows the pattern that aligns them. This grid shows many well-known archeological sites and areas of unexplained phenomena. A pattern emerges which gives us clues or potential reasons they choose these locations. We doubt these ancient cultures had contact with one another. He identified 12 major points he called vortices. Sanderson (1911-1973) (1), a cryptozoology founder, discovered a common link between many sites worldwide. Today, this phenomenon is called energy ley lines. The pattern shows how sacred geometry vibrational energy is a global phenomenon. They called it the Unified Vector Geometry 120 Polyhedron, or Earth Star. William Becker and Bethe Hagens placed the geometric symbol, the Icosahedron, on the globe and found it lined up several significant locations. We don’t know how they discovered these sites or how they used the energy. Becker-Hagens Grid Energy Ley LinesĪncient legends talk about how people could tap into the earth’s energy at specific points. We’ll examine twelve of these sites which have some interesting points in common regarding their location on the grid and the properties these locations exhibit. So they must have had some compelling reasons to do so. However, many of the sacred sites are remote or challenging to navigate the terrain. We don’t know exactly how or why they chose the sites to build significant monuments and buildings. Many ancient cultures built mysterious structures in specific locations. The Becker-Hagens grid, or world grid ley lines map, shows us this pattern and how it corresponds to sacred geometry vibrational energy ley lines. That means everything has a vibrational signature, even the Earth.

Demon Seed is Chad’s pick and for him, it’s a little hard to look at what are supposed to be advanced computers back in 1977. Even so, he really likes the performances from Fritz Weaver, Gerrit Graham, and especially Julie Christie. And, oooh, that baby! Bill observes that for a low-budget movie with a dopey, ridiculous premise, the filmmakers get a lot of things right in this forward-looking take on artificial intelligence. Bill, too, lauds Gerrit Graham’s performance but compares the trippy visual effects to really bad screen savers. The “ridiculous premise” of Demon Seed puts Jeff off a little; he just can’t buy the articulating polyhedron-puzzle-thingee that is produced and manipulated by Proteus even though he agrees it is pretty cool. When Doc first viewed Demon Seed as a youngster, he was struck by how the computer took over the house and shocked the young girl. Conceptually, he enjoys the “ahead-of-it’s-time” feel of Demon Seed. In the end, what really saves this movie, in Doc’s view, is Julie Christie’s performance.
If you’re in the mood for a 1970s prediction of AI and a really creepy, brass-plated baby, don’t forget about Demon Seed. As of this writing, it is available to stream from multiple free-with-ads streaming services, including tubi and Wicked Horror TV. Demon Seed can also be streamed from many PPV sources and is available on physical media as a Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by Doc, will be Horror Hospital (1973). Is it a good sign when a movie has multiple titles and release dates?

Hi Josh, I like to dabble in ttrpg design. There's a store near my house that has a giant stack of issues of Dragon Magazine from mostly the 90s. I didn't get into RPGs until much later. Did you ever read that magazine? If I was going to buy some to analyze or try to play, are there any authors or artists or modules you'd recommend I keep an eye out for?
Yeah, that was the era when I was reading Dragon, Dungeon, and Polyhedron a lot. I don't have any of my old issues anymore, but I do reference the .pdfs from time to time.
Issue 148 is memorable as the Deck of Many Things issue, which had printed sheets of cards to ruin your campaign. That's a Ned Dameron cover. Ned did a lot of nice art for TSR/Dragon, including a lot of the priests in the 2nd Edition Forgotten Realms Faiths & Avatars/Powers & Pantheons/Demihuman Deities series. He also did really beautiful pen and ink drawings in the Hall of Heroes supplement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daniel Horne also contributed some really nice work to Dragon, including the cover to issue 126, which served as the inspiration for Sagani in Pillars of Eternity.
Tumblr media
Other artists who did things in a variety of rule/sourcebooks and Dragon/Dungeon at the time were Tom Baxa, Valerie Valusek, Jim Holloway, and Stephen Fabian.
One other issue of Polyhedron sticks out in my mind especially, #150, which featured an art nouveau stylization of Spelljammer. No offense to Jim Holloway, who did much of the art for Spelljammer (and also a TON of Paranoia art), but his style never really seemed like a great fit for for the setting. Art nouveau Spelljammer was really appealing to me.

Ghadah Alkandari (also known by her blog name Pretty Green Bullet) is a Kuwait artist who paints beguiling, ethereal characters on canvas, fabric and herself. Often constructed as large-scale artworks, Ghadah then photographs herself in front of them, painting her own limbs too, so that she becomes an extension of the artwork.
"I am an artist living and working in Kuwait. I was born in India in 1969. In 1992 I received a BA in Mass Communications from the American University in Cairo. But it was my six-week painting course at the School of Visual Arts that shaped my current painting style, which was also influenced early on by both classical painters: Cezanne, Matisse, Schiele, Modigliani and Klimt, and comic books: Mad Magazine, Archie and Asterix.
“My body of work ranges from large-scale acrylic portraits to smaller, more intimate pen and ink drawings. My paintings are primarily figurative, exploring the wide spectrum of human emotion and familial complexities. Whereas my paintings are visceral and highly personal, my sketchbook drawings are more detached and focus on everyday happenings, but with a twist. It is in these surreal drawings that you can see the influence of writers such as Barry Yourgrau and children’s auth0r Shel Silverstein." - Ghadah Alkandari

[[ Greater Moonsea Map by cuiilv. From the creator via Candlekeep:
Just want to share a map that I have been working on for a few years. It started out as a map of the Moonsea, the Ride and most of Vaasa in the early 1380s DR, but slowly grew to cover more and more land, until it included all of Damara, Impiltur, the Vast, the Dalelands, Sembia, Cormyr and large portions of Anauroch and the Great Glacier as well, before I finally forced myself to stop.
The map itself is very much inspired by Mike Schley's works, but I have tried to make it different enough to not be mistaken for the original.
All locations have been taken from official sourcebooks, magazines, articles, adventures, games, novels, short stories, and directly from designer (mostly Ed Greenwood and George Krashos here at Candlekeep). So everything should be canon (depending a bit on how inclusive your definition of canon is).
Note: This awesome map is HUGE and VERY DETAILED. It’s also thoroughly researched by the creator. I’m saving a copy of all the references they used, for the unlikely chance that this information will disappear from Candlekeep. ]]
cuiilv:
Here is a list of references for 1869 of the 1872 names that appear in the map. They are listed exactly as they appear on the map, so Kingdom of Impiltur is found under K, not I. All alternative/historical names are listed in a separate category with ( ) around the name, exactly they way they appear in the map. 275. Various Authors - Dragon #81 (January 1984)
Tumblr media
Welcome to 1984! A momentous year for Dungeons and Dragons and the start of many new things. For the first time AD&D will have a new campaign setting, and with that campaign setting there will come the start of the novel publishing business that will be a large part of TSR and WoTC's output until recently. I am talking, of course, of Dragonlance, and in this issue of Dragon magazine you can already see a reference to it in a mysterious advert with the Dragonlance symbol and under it just the words: "is coming from TSR". But that is still a couple of months away in March, and the novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight will be coming around in April.
Tumblr media
So in the meanwhile let's look at this issue of  Dragon magazine. Behind the cool cover by Steve Peregrine, we start off with the announcement that the magazine will stop publishing adventures from the Module Design contest in its middle pages. This makes some sense as they aren't exactly up to professional standards and there are already adventures coming out in Polyhedron. Eventually in 1986 we will have a whole magazine dedicated to adventures with Dungeon, but not yet.
Tumblr media
Articles this issue include one about making poisons a bit more forgiving (something desperately needed in 1st edition), Ed Greenwood brings us the ecology of the Basilisk, taken from the library of Sulphon of Waterdeep, we get rules to use chariots in AD&D, an article on how to harvest spell components as well as the usual comics and cartoons at the end of the issue. A good one!

do you know any ttrpgs about music? either where music is a mechanic in the game, the goal of the game, or a major part of the setting? i know my mechanical-engagement preferences in ttrpgs, but mostly im just interested in a broad range of games about music, and willing to try out stuff that may not work for me
Musical tabletop RPGs, eh? It’s a specialised genre, to be sure, but a more popular one than you might think. A few personal favourites:
The Dance and the Dawn - I’m stretching the letter of your request a bit with this initial entry, as it’s more properly about dancing than music, but I was reminded of it so immediately that it’d be remiss not to include it. A tabletop adaptation of a LARP scenario by the same title, this one’s basically a Gothic dating sim where conflicts are resolved via tactical ballroom dancing, played out using pieces on a chess board. Definitely one to look into if you’re a fan of ballroom dancing, tragic duels, Byronic angst, or some intersection of the three.
Hijinx - A Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition adaptation for playing mystery-solving musicians in the mode of cartoons like Josie and the Pussycats or Jem and the Holograms. Includes a combat system that adapts 3E’s tactical grid to musical confrontations, with the audience as the battlefield and your riffs as your playing pieces. It requires some familiarity with the 3E core rules to play, and was published as a backup feature in Polyhedron magazine; the preceding link will take you to a store where you can purchase a PDF of the relevant back issue.
Powerchords - A musical urban fantasy sourcebook, this one’s heavy on the essays and worldbuilding and light on the mechanics. Partly this is because it’s ostensibly a system-neutral resource – though in practice a lot of its gameplay assumptions are tied to Deleria, a long out of print RPG by the same writer – but to a much greater degree it’s just that the author has a lot of opinions on the subject matter. It’s one of those RPG books that’s designed more to be read than played, so definitely not the best choice if you’re looking for something for a pickup game.
Ribbon Drive - A bit of a shift from the other titles in this post, this one’s a game that uses music, but isn’t really about music. It’s a road-trip storygame where each player is expected to bring a mix or playlist based on a theme they want to explore during the session. The initial stages of play consist of listening to songs from a randomly chosen playlist, alternating with brainstorming phases that define both the premise of the scenario and the characters who inhabit it, with traits taken directly from the song lyrics. The remainder of the playlists (i.e., the parts not used during the initial brainstorming phases) serve as tone-setting background noise for semi-freeform RP scenes.
Starchildren: Velvet Generation - An early 2000s indie game about glam aliens saving the world from the Man with the power of rock; if you’re picturing “Ziggy Stardust: the RPG”, that’s not quite right, but it’s not entirely wrong either. The mechanics are pretty old school, in spite of being based on playing cards rather than dice, and the worldbuilding has all the unfortunate quirks you’d expect of a game based on 1970s glam rock culture, but even if you never play it as written it’s a wonderful idea mine. Content warning for frequent discussion of drug use; the propensity to easily pick up fatal addictions is one of the mechanical drawbacks of playing a starchild character rather than an earthling.
