Reader ==> Have Lunch With Hellfire Club
"Ow'' You hissed, laying your head down on the cool table. You had been doubled over for 10 seconds and most of the club looked at you with concern.
"Uh... You good, Lipton?" Jeff asked.
You winced, from both the cramp and what he'd called you. Why did no one at this school use first names? It was already hard enough responding to a false name to begin with, even after memorizing the information on your new kinda-fake ID card. Thanks, Murray.
"Just dying. It's fine, I'll live." You groaned, and forced yourself to sit up and look down the table at Eddie, passed Mike and Dustin. "Got any painkillers?" You asked.
"None that would help you." Eddie shrugged.
"Ah, lovely." You laid your head back down as another cramp shot through your uterus.
It was the last day of school before Hawkins High went on fall break. You had snuck over to the school to have lunch with Eddie and the rest of Hellfire Club. Currently, all of you were sitting outside, enjoying one of the last warm days before the cold set in. Out here, none of the teachers would see you all, and even if they did, they wouldn’t take note of one extra person who shouldn’t be on school grounds anyway. Besides, it’s not like it was your first time sneaking into the school, as it had become a habit over the past few weeks as you made yourself a part of Hellfire.
By this time next week you’d be set up in the small trailer on the opposite end of the same trailer park that Eddie lived. Just a few more days and you could finally move out of Benny’s and you could stop dealing with stupid jocks and bugs and all the other bullshit that came with being a squatter.
"What's wrong with you?" Asked Gareth.
"Alphabetically or chronologically?” your voice was deadpan and muffled from being pressed against the old picnic table. “And how much time do you have?"
You wondered briefly what “chronologically” even meant with you. Would you start chronologically in a direct timeline starting in 1895? Or maybe you’d start at the year you were born and loop back around.
"She can't be in too much pain if she's still a smartass," snorted Jeff.
"You're laughing. A party member is bleeding to death and you're laughing." The cramp subsided and you sat up again.
"Gross." Muttered Gareth.
"I bleed for days at a time and survive. Get on my level" you hissed.
"Level 5?" Jeff shot back. "You're still behind us, even with Henderson's help."
"Motherfucker I swear-"
"Hey now, no need to fight" Dustin piped up, looking between everyone with concern. "We're all stressed because of midterms, we don't need to take it out on each other."
You closed your mouth and backed down. You didn’t mind the occasional fight with Gareth, honestly you almost enjoyed it when he picked a fight with you because it meant you could blow off some steam. But Dustin was currently your only real friend, and you weren’t going to risk pissing him off. That kid was the only one to try and figure out how you ended up here anyway.
Plus, he’d been running some one on one adventures with you between Hellfire meetings. With Eddie insisting that all new players start at level 1 no matter what the party was at, Dustin had convinced him to let him do some smaller adventures to help you try and catch up with everyone else. Sometimes Mike and Lucas would even join in.
"Just ignore me." You sighed. "I'll live even if it kills me." You looked at the uneaten sandwich in front of you. The idea of eating it made you feel gross even if you were hungry. You grabbed it and tossed it down the table in front of Eddie who looked at you with a cocked eyebrow.
"Don't want it. You eat it." you mumbled, forehead against the table again. You were starting to feel like you should have just stayed at Benny’s until it was actually time for Hellfire.
"You gonna be okay to play tonight?" Eddie asked. "Or do you need us to find a sub for you?"
You shook your head. "I'll be there." You promised. "I'll just hit up Robin or someone for some aspirin before the game and I'll be fine. Might not be the most talkative-"
"That'd be a first." Muttered Jeff.
You flipped him off. "I'll be there. I can still roll dice as well at anyone here."
Eddie grinned. "Good, and I'm not gonna go easy on any of you tonight."
"Do you ever?" Mike laughed.
"Yeah, you've always been tough on us, but Cult of Vecna has been your most sadistic campaign yet." agreed Jeff.
"That's because this is my year." Eddie said. "I'm gonna graduate and I'm going out with a bang." Eddie drummed on the table with his hands, revved up now. The vibrations of his drumming echoed through your head and you sat up again.
He stood up, the sandwich left forgotten for the moment. You watched him, and the way he moved was like a full-on rainstorm. Eddie only ever seemed to have two modes, 'on' and 'off'.
He was very much on now.
There was a fire in his eyes that had burned you for the past month since you'd been invited to Hellfire. Your initial attraction to a fictional character turned coworker had burst into a full blown genuine crush. In the autumn air, his cheeks were flushed red from the cold and his natural excitement, and his hair was flying everywhere. Even with Eddie circling the table as he bragged about his campaign to the members your heart felt like it might leap out of your chest, distracting you from the other organs inside you that were ripping themselves apart.
A firm hand grasped you at the crook of your neck, and you tensed slightly at Eddie's touch, your mind blanked for a moment as he made physical contact with you.
Eddie was... Very handsy. He wasn't afraid to grapple, wrestle, grab, and generally put his hands on his fellow Hellfire members. Eddie had picked up Dustin and Mike by the shirt collars and pushed them more times than you had bothered counting.
This however, was the first time he had laid a hand on you. You held your breath as you tried to ignore the shiver that slid down your spine and into your core. You didn’t dare let anyone see that this had any effect on you.
‘Not the time, self.’ you scolded yourself.
Eddie gave you a shake, which changed that warmth in your core to a vague sense of nausea.
“Please don’t shake me right now.” you groaned. Your guts were not interested in physical movement right now. Your legs were already nearly constantly sore from biking everywhere.
To Eddie’s credit, he did stop. His hand was still firm against you though, and you could feel the cold metal of one of his rings against your skin.
“See this one,” he gave you one more shake, the asshole. “This one is so metal that even though she probably should retreat tonight she’s still willing to show up for us.”
The compliment made your heart swell and the air didn’t feel so brisk as your own cheeks warmed up. You tilted your head back to look at him with surprise; Eddie didn’t hand out compliments too lightly with the club. He was always so straight forward, firm. He wouldn’t say anything unless he meant it.
“I’ve always shown up when it mattered.” you said quietly, flashbacking (flash forwarding?) just a split second to a group of friends from the future. Not that it mattered, I guess. What was that??
The hand slid off of you, and a sense of emptiness echoed through your chest and at the loss of the warmth and pressure. You shoved down the lump in your throat by taking a long gulp of water. You had been here for nearly 2 months, and that had been the first bit of physical contact you had with anyone outside of a small scrap with Murrey or a handshake with someone, or your literal run in with Steve Harrington.
One small touch, and you felt like you were falling apart. You were really starting to be sick of this feeling.
Eddie sat back down and pulled out the sandwich you had offered him and you watched it disappear in 4 bites.
“Jesus Eddie, did you even taste that?” asked Mike, and to be fair it was a valid question.
“Didn’t need to, it was edible. Thanks, Lipton”
“Why do you all keep calling me that?” you asked, looking around the table.
“What, ‘Lipton’?” Mike asked. “I don’t know, it’s just something we do here.”
“Could... you please not call me that? Just call me by my name please. Or ‘Dipshit’. Or ‘Hey You’ or ‘That one girl in Hellfire’. Anything else.”
“You’re barely in Hellfire.” Gareth grumbled, flicking a chip crumb off the table and onto the dirt below. Gareth had been nice enough the first night you showed up for Hellfire, but then the more you hung around the less he seemed to like you. You’d deal with that later.
Eddie looked over at you, his wide brown eyes meeting yours and he said your name.
The back of your neck prickled at the sound of your name on his lips. You wanted him to say it again.
‘Not the fucking time, self’ You scolded yourself again. You had so many bigger issues than a guy with pretty brown eyes and a chipped front tooth that made your stomach explode in butterflies.
Oh, who the fuck were you kidding? You did not. In fact, he was absolutely the main problem that you were going to have to deal with in a few months. If he wasn’t planning on being a hero, maybe you could actually sleep at night.
You gave him a small nod, and wondered if you looked as tired as you felt.
“Sorry, it's an old habit.” Dustin said. “We’ll stick with your first name”
“Thank you.” you said, relaxing. You looked at the time, not long until lunch was over. Then two more hours, then school was over. Hellfire started at four, a half hour after school ended. That gave you a few hours to just wander around aimlessly until school ended.
You zoned out for the rest of lunch, poking at the food you had brought until it was all passed along to Eddie. He never did bring enough food for himself anyway.
When the bell rang you took your time gathering your stuff up as most of the club started back towards the school building.
As you were about to turn and head in the opposite direction towards the woods. something grabbed you by the shoulder and moved you behind a tree before you realized what was happening. Eddie stood in front of you, hands on your upper arms, head tilted with that look of intense concern on his face. You found yourself stiff under that gaze, thrown off by how he had suddenly grabbed you.
“Eddie....?”
“I meant what I said, earlier.” he said. “There’s no shame in retreating. If you feel like shit, you don’t have to come.”
“I want to.” you said. “I- I really do, I promise. I don’t want to let you down.” It took you three seconds to realize that you had said ‘you’ and not ‘everyone’ and heat burned your cheeks.
Eddie put a hand on your forehead. “You’re warm and you look like.. You look fucking tired.”
“....Thank you, Eddie. Just what every woman wants to hear from a man.” Your voice was deadpan. “I’ll be fine. I just need to take an aspirin and maybe take a small nap before Hellfire.”
His brown eyes bore into yours and you wondered how easily he could see through you. “Come on, you can take a nap in my van.” Eddie didn’t bother giving you a chance to answer before dragging you around the school, towards the parking lot.
It took a moment for his words to register in your brain as you followed him. "....Huh?"
"I have some spare blankets and a pillow back there. I crash in the back all the time. Might not be the... Cleanest or the most comfortable but it's safe. Not like anyone's interested in messing with the freaks van" He said, his hand sliding down your arm to grab your hand.
Eddie was holding your hand. Shit shit shit shit shit-
Your brain caught up to you. "Ah, yeah that would be really nice actually." you said. "I probably really need the short rest of I'm gonna survive you tonight."
You wondered if Eddie realized that he had given your hand a squeeze. "Get those spell slots back, you're gonna need them."
"Thank you, I really do appreciate it.” And you did, passing out in his van was definitely safer than passing out in the woods somewhere until Hellfire started.
Eddie looked over at you and smiled. "Everyone in Hellfire has crashed in that van at least once. It's basically a right of passage to help break in the newbies."
You couldn't stop your mouth from running. "You break in all the newbies in the back of your van?" You looked up at him with a teasing half grin. "Damn, this really is a cult." ‘Not. The. Fucking. Time. Get your head out of the gutter please.’
Eddie snorted and shook his head. "You'd be surprised what's happened in the back of that van."
"Sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll?" you offered. ‘What did I just tell myself??’
"Two out of three. I'll let you guess which ones."
The bell rang and you jumped. "Shit, you’re gonna be late to class.” You looked over at Eddie, worried about his getting in trouble.
“It’s just gym, no one will care if I’m late” he said. “I don’t like being the first in the locker room anyway. Are you sure you're okay?" Eddie asked, looking you over. "I'm not trying to be a dick but you really look rough."
"I feel rough. I'll be fine." You promised. "I just need a nap. You said it yourself, I'm metal. Can't exactly let everyone down when you called me that."
"You're either very brave or very stupid." Eddie said, opening the back door to the van, giving a sweeping gesture to motion you inside.
You tossed your backpack in first before crawling in. To your surprise Eddie hopped in with you and closed the door.
"Just need to move some things around. As a Hellfire member and your DM, you know that what happens in this van stays here." Eddie's eyes narrowed slightly and you nodded dumbly, wondering if he was aware of how some of the things he was saying sounded. "Good."
He pulled up a section of the floor where a spare tire should be, and pulled out a small box. You leaned against the back of the front seat, closing your eyes. Whatever Eddie was doing, it wasn't your business, not when he was being so nice. You really thought you had completely blown it a few weeks ago when you first went over to his home, but by some power he kept letting you hang around. Being coworkers probably helped.
With your eyes closed, you breathed in deeply and took in the scent of the van. There was a lingering smell of weed and cigarettes, mixed with the natural smell of him and a hint of some sort of air cleaner to mask the smells. It could have been much worse, you found that your tolerance for the scent of narcotics had gone up a lot since being here.
Your body was already starting to relax, knowing that rest was coming soon. You had been running around Hawkins all week between shifts and doing your own investigation work of the town, looking for anything that could help you come Spring Break.
Something soft hit your head and you opened your eyes. Eddie had tossed you two blankets and a pillow. "They were washed recently." He said.
"Eddie you- can you come wake me up before Hellfire?" You asked, feeling the texture of one of the blankets. It was worn and thin but nice against your hands. "I don't have a watch or an alarm." Your watch had died two days ago and you wouldn’t be able to get a new one until Bev paid you again.
"Don't worry, I'll need to come back here anyway. I'm keeping my notes for today in the front seat. Don't peek. I'll know if you do, and there will be consequences." Eddie's tone was serious as he tossed his Hellfire notes in the front seat. He put his whole being into this campaign, and you wouldn't dare betray that trust that was starting to form between the two of you.
"Wouldn't dream of it, I doubt I could read your chicken scratch handwriting anyway." you said and he grabbed the pillow from you and smacked it on your head again with a laugh.
"Stan tried once. Once. He learned his lesson after that. He didn't even read the right notes, he ended up with an attempt at my English homework."
Stan. Another name from his past that never was in the show. You had already accepted that Eddie was real, even if it had left you spiraling for a good two days. But there were still small moments to just how real he was. Hellfire Club existed before now. Eddie had friends before this version of Hellfire. Each new piece of himself that he offered you was tucked away in your mind, a reminder of what you were really working for. You wished you could offer the same.
It was comfortable in the back of the van with him like this. You could count on one hand the amount of times you had been alone together for longer than five minutes, not counting your shifts together at The Hideout . There was a part of you that was still nervous about being with him, this person who shouldn't exist with you.
Eddie looked at his watch. "Business calls. Get some rest, I'll be back for you before Hellfire."
"I'll try not to die in your van."
The van shifted as he scooted over to the door, opening it and letting in the late September air for a moment.
“Night" He said before closing the door behind him, leaving you alone.
Reader => Take A Nap In Eddie’s Van
You grabbed the blankets and started adjusting them. Thankfully there were no mysterious stains on any of them, but the pillow was very much a 'boy pillow' which was flat and old and offered zero support. But it was his and it smelled like him and it was... More clean than expected. Not like you had any room to complain.
You laid back and took a few slow breaths. You didn't expect to actually get any sleep but some time to just lay down and relax was enough for now. You were sure that Eddie would tire you out again tonight-
‘With the campaign you fucking pervert.’ You scolded yourself, trying to ignore the warmth in her stomach again from just his hand on your arm and shoulder. Hellfire was always very high energy, and Eddie's stamina was unwavering. As a Dungeon Master- no fuck, not that kind of dungeon master-!
What was wrong with you today? Being on your period and the stress must be catching up to you. You were starting to think you needed to get laid. Or maybe convince Steve or Robin to loan your their Family Video discounts to rent from the back room-
No. You were NOT going to hit up a jock and his lesbian best friend for porn. You didn’t even have a VHS player.
You were so fucking touch starved.
You shut your eyes tight and tried to clear your mind of any perverted thoughts. It was pleasant in his van in a weird way. Cool, and parked in the shade, and just dark enough to let your mind shutdown slowly. Maybe you’d get a contact high, but you didn't know enough about drugs to know and at this point you were too afraid to ask.
You tossed and turned for a bit, trying to get comfortable enough to just relax. The van's floor was hard, and it took a half hour to find a position (with doubling your backpack with the pillow) where your brain could shut down fully.
It felt like you had just closed your eyes when a knock came from outside. You jumped and sat up quickly, fumbling in the sheets to cover up before remembering that you were still fully clothed.
"Wake up, Sunshine, Hellfire starts in 15 minutes!" The van door opened and Eddie smiled at you. "Hand me my bag"
You reached for his bag and pushed it over, shaking your head to reoriented yourself. Right, Eddie's van. Naptime.
"Last chance to back out." Eddie said. "Say the word and I'll walk away and drive you home after Hellfire."
"I'm okay!" You said, not knowing if you were going to crash at Benny’s or in a basement. "I actually feel a lot better after laying down for a bit. Just let me use the bathroom and I'll be all good for tonight, I promise."
Eddie reached out to take your wrist and help you out of the van, and you stumbled slightly before readjusting. Eddie grabbed your arms to make sure you didn’t eat shit on the pavement.
"I'm good, you just threw me off. I'm fine, Eddie."
Eddie answered by letting you go and closing the van door. "You know the house rules. Anyone late gets a penalty at my discretion."
"Yes, Dad" you rolled your eyes and the two of you made your way back to the school. Once inside you stepped away and slipped into the bathroom to freshen up and readjust your clothing and pee. After splashing some cold water on your face and cleaning up you did feel a lot better.
"You actually showed up" Gareth said as you made her way down the stairs.
"Get on my level Gareth." you said, taking your seat at the table.
"Feel any better?" Asked Dustin.
"Yeah, much better." You pulled out your folder and set your mini fig on the table. "Eddie let me crash in his van for a bit."
The overhead light went out and with a click a single lamp that hung above the table flickered on. Eddie was now seated in his 'throne', his side of the table now set up.
"If we're done chatting now gentleman, lady" he nodded at you. "Last we left the party...”

//Welp, went into reading stuff on Ishtar-Collective and I read the book of Power and
//my gosh
//do I want to just hold Eris in my arms and tell her it’s okay, that I forgive her and that I probably would’ve cracked like that too in her position.
//hhhhhhhhhh i love her and wish her the best just
//hhhhh
//Edit: Reading more about it and reading it again it is definitely an Eris imposter, but it really seems like this particular imposter may have been a splinter from Quria, Blade Transform, attempting to also break free of the absolute control of being Taken, or created as a lure to capture and keep a guardian in simulation and growing into its own self for reasons unknown. But regardless, I do think my gal Echo would’ve gone looking for Medusa, if only to tell who or whatever it was that she forgives it and thanks for the adventure.

though i eventually got to read some, in earlier years goosebumps books would be the kind of series where i'd just ponder the cover art, and i always liked the drama of the monster blood illustration (the lighting/colors....sure nothing's happening in it but i felt it evoked the drama of "what if you're downstairs and something's upstairs" much like "what if you're upstairs and something's downstairs") like well too bad i guess i never got around to reading i at the time. but as of a recap yesterday i'm surprised to now be at least 90% sure i read part if not all of it, and thinking i hadn't may be due to how kind of nothing happens in it
#absolutely nothing familiar until ''there's a dog named trigger & the kid at one point has to rescue trigger from choking'' like Aha#for sure still remember various Events & Details from gb books i Know i've read....#welcome to dead house; the ghost next door maybe my most well absorbed ones lol. lot going on in those definitely#let's get invisible. some choose your own adventure varieties. calling all creeps. oh the haunted mask ofc; all time classic....#definitely hadn't read the phantom of the auditorium; reading it as an adult was a delight#things on the other side or the middle of the stairs it's just like skinamarink heck for real#itself like well that's absolutely the horror of being kids if not ''kids' horror'' lol#but that aspect is always inherently present in kids' horror...always surrounded by mysteries & lack of power/autonomy & fairly isolated...#anyways had a parent whose Disapproval Mode could be set off by various media available to kids my age so that was a minefield#(same parent thought it was inappropriate for some tv 14 rated programs to be available in a house solely ft. adults so there you are)#at least at first was of the ''horror for children?? inappropriate'' approach about it. i didn't check the books out of libraries ever#but eventually must've calmed down abt that b/c we Did own some & that's how i read most of ones i did#too late i was always a kid intrigued by / seeking out horror materials....john bellairs books which got pretty wild....#much less so as an adult b/c horror gets worse (& not in any good way) aimed for teens / adults like lord. You Do Not Get It#anyways turns out monster blood is probably riffing off the blob mostly but it's like not thee blob until way later#so most of the book wouldn't really be that memorable if it's 80% ''and then here was another weird thing abt the gunk''#but i would remember like oh no the dog is in mortal peril :( nooo trigger (trigger was fine)#sure didn't misremember that in welcome to dead house the dog went missing & was implicitly killed over Sensing The Deadness#appreciated that element in phantom of the auditorium where they're hanging out at zeke's & he has a dog#& secret but really just chilling painting sets & very corporeal ghost brian is like ''aw cmon...'' at that dog Not Liking Him#which is some barking & not being enthused abt brian's efforts to play fetch w/a ball lmao#but only to a mild degree like yeah he's not doing anything. brooke & zeke witnessing this simply like lol lmao#that trio is sooo funny. ghost just hanging out; So nervous; ending up dragged into the friend duo absolute menaces hellions lmao....#the paint on his shirt bit. just the way the whole back & forth of 4 ppl goes; it kills Me....

also i do think that it’s cool as an opener that it doesn’t really matter if you pick cats or dogs in the scheme of things. i like that kind of thing in choose your own adventures for a myriad of reasons including pacing. just the concept that some choices don’t really matter, and some choices matter a lot, and some choices matter but seem arbitrary and some choices seem important but affect nothing, are all interesting dynamics to play around with in that setting. so like i would have to guess that this was mostly to show off how the unlisted video features was going to work but it would be cool if that idea prevailed in the story line that some things just don’t really matter. because then that gives the audience a chance to ask themselves, what are the things that Do matter in this universe. and i think that’s a really interesting question that can flesh out a lot for world building and differentiate one adventure from another.

_________________
They've been out maybe three times in the last three years. To make things absolutely clear, Steve's more than grateful for each experience, in and of itself. They've been amazing nights, individually, and as a trend in Bucky's journey in, whatever to call it. Finding himself again.
They're back to living under the same roof, and things are still touchy. Well, they've barely stopped being touchy. Steve and Bucky sleep in the same bed again. They can hug. Cuddle. Drink coffee, and prepare each other's brews in just the right ways. It brings smiles. Happiness. They tell each other "I love you."
The bar down the block, past the gym and the pizza joint, is doing a Valentines Day special. Buy one get one drinks and appetizers, plus live music. A Beatles cover band. It sounds nice. It sounds like just their speed, as long as it's not too crowded.
Steve poses the question about a week in advance, and he's thrilled with Bucky's tentative agreement.
"Yeah." Bucky had nodded slowly. "I think that's... That's... Yeah."
Steve had considered offering Sam as a third wheel, or inviting Laura and Clint to come join, but if Bucky was willing to share the experience solo with Steve, he felt all the more fluttery inside. He felt younger. He felt like he was... accomplishing something.
The evening of, Steve leaves work early. He parks his bike in the garage, then heads upstairs to shower. Bucky's in the bedroom already, standing in front of the mirror on the closet door in his underwear, hair wet and dripping down the back of his neck.
"Hi," Steve says as he approaches, unbuttoning his shirt and wadding it up for the laundry. "You ok?"
"Yeah." Bucky seems to break from a trance. "I just. Clothes."
"Socks," Steve advises. "Then, whatever you want. It's kind of cold out, but..." He shrugs.
Bucky gives him a half smile and nods, then enters the closet. Steve can hear him aggressively attempting to locate appropriate socks as he strips and turns on the hot water in the bathroom.
He's just nervous, Steve tells himself. Steve himself is nervous, if he tells the truth. The chance of a public breakdown is real. He won't play percentages, but Bucky's still fragile. He probably will be for the rest of his life. Steve hates to think of what could happen if Bucky trips over a shoelace or something and wants Laura and Clint to come and comfort him instead of Steve. His one and only Steve. Steve's one and only Bucky.
Dusk falls into night, and they get into the car. Steve purposely put on only one spritz of cologne, but he can still smell himself in an awkward, overpowering way. Like a kid who's overused a can of Axe. Bucky smells heavily of Dial Gold and laundry detergent. Steve wonders if he rinsed himself properly in the shower, but there's no complaint there. Bucky's spiffed up for him. For this. And the thought of that makes Steve's butterflies go wild. He hopes he isn't blushing.
They park in front of the gym and hightail it across the strip of closed businesses and crooked cars to the neon lights up at the corner. Steve holds open the door, and immediately there's a gush of air tinted with beer, fried food, and thumping that falls slightly off beat with the classic rock music playing inside.
Bucky seems to have no qualms about entering, though, and he glances back at Steve before jutting his chin toward two empty stools at the bar. They're positioned on the corner, so Bucky won't have his back to the door, but Steve thinks it's pretty adventurous that he isn't seeking out the farthest corner.
"Yeah, that's a good spot," Steve encourages. Bucky gives a single nod and practically runs to the stools, as if they're in danger of being taken.
They sit. Steve takes off his leather jacket and covers his stool before using it as an extra cushion. Bucky puts his elbow on the bar and lets his stump shoulder, hidden in the swaths of his flannel shirt sleeve, bump against Steve's arm. Whether it's accidental or affectionate or grounding, Steve can't tell, but he's happy to be the buffer all the same.
The bartender comes up and asks what they'll have. Steve orders a Sam Adams, then squints at the chalkboard on the wall before choosing a food item.
Bucky stutters. "A, um, a coke with... with a shot of..." He seems to scan the various bottles and brews behind the counter. "Um. Maybe just a coke..."
"How about a coke and a shot of Jim Beam on the side?" Steve offers, hoping the script is helpful and not patronizing.
"Yeah. That's. Yeah. I'll have that." Bucky nods to the bartender.
"And for eats?" the bartender prompts.
"Um..." Steve fully expects Bucky to order French fries. He's gotten them here before, and he's become used to eating potatoes from various places. Maybe with a little ketchup or mayonnaise here and there. It's not a broad palette, but it's something. "Onion rings?"
Steve raises his eyebrows.
"Ranch?" asks the bartender.
Bucky pauses a beat. "Ok."
"I'll just share with him," Steve says when he gets the next inviting glance. "We'll keep you posted."
"Alright, then." The bartender smiles and turns away, only to come back a second later with their drinks.
"This ok?" Steve checks in.
Bucky takes a moment to tear the paper off his straw before jamming in between the ice cubes in his coke.
"Mm hm." Bucky takes a drink of his soda, then argues the straw back down to the bottom of the cup when it begins to float upward on the bubbles of carbonation.
The last time or so they've been here, Bucky's had a beer. Just one per visit, as far as Steve can remember. Bucky doesn't seem to enjoy the sloshy warmth and disorientation as much as he used to. Not as much as he used to before the war. Not as much as he seems to when he fucks with his meds.
A coke and a shot, though, it's almost humorous to Steve. That was Bucky...way back. Stealing sips from his father's liquor cabinet before they'd even graduated. Before he'd signed on. If he's remembering, Steve's not messing with that. Bucky can tell him, at his own pace. If he's progressing, it's great. But if he's being wild... Steve feels the need to keep his guard up a little.
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band begins to play from the music platform, which is behind them and a little to the left.
"I've never really gotten this song," Steve admits, his lips close to Bucky's ear so he knows he can hear him properly. "It's like a spoof, right? They're a band singing as if they're another band singing?"
"Your guess is as good as mine." Bucky toys with his shot. He dips his finger in it, then puts it in his mouth. "That's some strong stuff."
Steve grins. "That's why people use a mixer." He looks pointedly at Bucky's coke. "Dump it in there, if you want."
"Nah." Bucky shakes his head. "Don't want to ruin the coke."
"You have had alcohol before," Steve reminds him, a little unsurely. "You remember Clint's Halloween party? And, like, a long time ago?"
"Yeah." Bucky cocks his head to the side. "I just... It feels like a lifetime ago. Both of those..."
"I'm not saying you have to do anything," Steve says quickly, just in case he's accidentally created a situation with pressure. "I'm just saying, like," he pauses, choosing his words carefully. "You have options, you know?"
"Yeah." Bucky doesn't get time to say anything else, for the bartender is back with a steaming basket of onion rings, still sizzling in grease from the fryer. The lining paper sticks up, fresh and stiff, and boats of ranch dressing and ketchup sit precariously on either side.
"Oh, wow. Thanks." Steve settles the basket on the bar and accepts the stack of paper napkins on offer as well.
"That smells amazing." Steve passes Bucky a fork and several napkins, but he doesn't accept right away. He finishes chugging his shot, swallows heavily, slams the glass down on the bar, then looks at Steve and seems to realize what he's supposed to be doing.
"Oh." Bucky clears his throat. "That's really. Yeah. Something else."
Steve burns his tongue and swigs his beer as a rescue measure. If he had space in his mouth, he'd check in with Bucky again. Ask if he's alright. He looks tense again. Maybe the shot had gone down too hard.
Steve should tell him to take a sip of coke, but before he can form words, Bucky's already forking an onion ring into the ranch, which he drips onto the basket's paper lining, and shoving it into his mouth. He chews only a couple of times before swallowing again. Hard. Then he puts his fist to his lips, the fork sticking out the other end like an improperly secured weapon.
The band strikes up Yellow Submarine. The singer's accent is just a touch over exaggerated, and Steve can see his shadow swaying back and forth, miming the sickly rhythm of the deck of an ocean liner.
"Hey," Steve says, maybe a little coarsely. He means to be gentle, but his throat feels raw. "You doing ok?"
"I, uh." Bucky swallows heavily. He shakes his head, but ducks his chin at the same time, so he could just as easily have been forming a nod. "I need--" He scrambles his feet toward the floor and looks frantically around to the corners of the crowded room. "Probably-- throw up."
"Sure. Yeah." Steve puts both hands on Bucky's shoulders, then points to the lit sign for the gent's. "Right there."
Bucky stumbles off his stool for the first step, but makes haste with his quick trot and rushes the door without causing a scene. Steve breathes a small sigh of relief, then starts counting down. He should give Bucky, what, a minute's head start? Thirty seconds?
He makes it to twenty with the slow countdown in his head, but Steve can't contain himself past that. The next ten seconds will be eaten up with the walk across the room, right?
Unsure if they'll return to their seats, Steve drops cash for the bill and a tip onto the counter, then collects his jacket and weaves his way toward the bathroom. Half the bar seems to be singing, or at least laughing, along with the band as they carry on with the ridiculous chorus.
Yellow submarine.
Yellow submarine.
Steve would probably puke, too, if he was stuck in a yellow submarine. God, the water pressure would be unbearable. Did people still die of the bends?
The single light bulb in the ceiling in incandescent, and for that, Steve's grateful. No need to spike up a migraine when Bucky's already feeling awful. The bathroom's shabby, but clean. Steve immediately hears Bucky hurling in the first stall, and he feels half heartbreak and half pleasure that Bucky, handicapped as he may be, has left the accessible stall for someone who needs it more than he does. It's classic Bucky all over.
"Hey, Buck." Steve announces his presence. "It's just me."
"Mmph." There's a retch, then a few coughs.
"Can I come in?" Steve asks tetremoniously?
Bucky spits into the toilet, bringing on an echo. "Yeah." It's barely a croak, but it's definite.
"Ok, yeah." Steve eases the stall door open. He gets a glimpse of Bucky's ghostly pale, sweaty face as he tries to look back at him, but after a second, it's lost as Bucky vomits again. He curls his arm around the toilet seat and rests his forehead on his wrist as his body contracts, back and neck arching to push what has to be down to cola and bile out of his system.
Steve stoops, then pops a squat, carefully rubbing his hand down Bucky's back. "Too much all at once?"
"Something." Bucky spits, strings of mucous dangling from his lower lip. "I don't even..."
"Seasick," Steve says decidedly. "Right?"
"Huh." It might have been the start of a laugh. Bucky hocks and gives it another good try. "About sums it up."
"Do you want to go home?" Seve proffers. "Or maybe have some water and sit a while, if the car doesn't sound that appealing."
"I'll be good in a minute." Bucky attempts to wipe his face on his stump shoulder. "You got something different, though?"
Steve's confused. "I'm not sure I follow..."
"Fucking submarine." Bucky digs at his eye socket with the heel of his hand. "They had to be smashed. All of them. The whole time."
"Oh." Steve tries not to laugh. "I think I have a Queen album in the glove box. The Stones, too."
"Yeah?" Bucky turns sideways just enough to catch Steve's eye. "If you can fix it... I love you."
Steve smiles. "Love you too, Buck."
"I mean, I still love you even if you don't fix it..."
"I got it, I got it." Steve helps Bucky to his feet. "Can you stand it for, like five seconds? Just to get outside?"
"I think so." Bucky pulls a paper towel, then slips his hand inside Steve's.
Steve opens the door, and they're immediately assaulted with All You Need is Love.
"Great," Steve groans, maneuvering Bucky in front of him so they can make it toward the exit.
He isn't sure if Bucky means for him to hear it, but Steve sees Bucky's lips move. "'s all I need."

Reader ==> Enjoy Your New Car!
The junk car that you managed to scrape together a couple hundred dollars for worked well enough for the first two weeks. It had no heating, no radio, the seats were uncomfortable, and there was a lingering scent that you couldn’t get rid of no matter how much you tried to clean it, but it drove you to the Hideout and the high school, and to the trailer you now called home.
That was until about a half hour ago when the key snapped in the slot to turn the engine on. Could you ever catch a break? Just fucking once while you were here?
You nearly jumped out of your seat and through the roof of your rust bucket when you heard a tap at the window. You looked to see Eddie, frowning at you and you manually cranked down the window.
“Evenin’ officer. How can I help you?” you asked, trying not to sound as defeated as you felt in that moment.
“This is a no parking zone.” He said, leaning over and resting his arms on the open window. It was late November, and the cold was consistent now, but you hardly noticed with how you’d been just staring out the windshield for the past thirty or so minutes. “Neighbors have been sending in complaints.”
You looked behind you at the neighboring trailers. There were at least 2 that had broken down cars within the block, one that’s been sitting on cinder blocks since before you arrived and one that the neighbor had been working on for a few weeks on and off. Other cars were scattered and parked near their own trailers, haphazardly.
“I’ll be sure to move it.” you said, more dry than intended.
“So why are you sitting out here in your car, staring out into space?” Eddie asked and looked out the way your car was facing, as if trying to see if there was anything interesting in that general direction. There wasn’t.
“Car’s broke.”
“How broke?”
You held up the piece of plastic where your key had been attached to.
“So the car’s fine, but the key broke.” Eddie clarified.
“Is there a difference?” You asked.
“There is. If the car was busted then you’d be fucked out of this rust bucket-”
“Eddie, you can’t say things like that.-” you rubbed your face, now feeling the cold in the contrast to the warmth in your cheeks.
“What I’m saying is I can help.” He continued. “Do you have any tools?”
“Uhhh....”
“Follow me.”
You got out of the car, not bothering to roll the window back up, and followed Eddie back to his trailer across the park. It wasn’t a long walk, you had already come to visit your friend more than a few times since you moved in. You felt a little bad, you found yourself spending time at Eddie’s place more than your own.
“So, what brought you to my end of the park?” you asked as the two of you walked. The ground was covered in a thin layer of frost that wouldn’t fully commit to snow or ice.
“Boredom.” he said honestly. “I fried my brain trying to learn this new riff I’ve been working on and I needed a break.”
“New song for the set?” You asked. “It’s about time, I get that one Judas Priest song is a staple, but you’ve beaten it into the ground at this point.”
“Prowler isn’t going anywhere as long as it’s the one song everyone can play consistently.” Eddie protested. “And it’s a new original song I’m working on.”
“That’s actually really cool.” you followed him into his slightly warmer trailer and watched as he opened a tiny closet and pulled out a tool box. “How many original songs do you have?”
“Three and a half.” Eddie said. “We uh.. We started with a song that Ronnie and I wrote together. We don’t play that one anymore, but we’ve got one other song, and this one that I’m working on now.”
“Why don’t you play the first song?” You asked as you followed him back out.
Eddie’s face went stoic for a moment, staring at the dirty green toolbox. “It just didn’t work out.” he finally said, and you had a feeling he wasn’t interested in talking about the song. “The second song is called Litch and if Jeff can commit to learning the vocals then we’d actually be able to play it at the Hideout at some point. They always hesitate on playing our original songs.”
“I’d like to hear your original stuff at some point.” you said, following him back out into the cold.
“If I can get the guys to commit, then you’ll hear it at some point.” Eddie said, leading the way back to your car.
There were times where the two of you couldn’t shut up for five seconds, and then there were times where the silence between the two of you was deafening. Sometimes you felt like you were getting somewhere with your friendship with Eddie, and sometimes... sometimes you wondered if he thought about you at all when you weren’t around.
He came over to see you. Of course he thinks about you. You told yourself, watching the subtle way his hair moved as the two of you walked together.
Eddie hopping into the driver seat of your car and you moved into the passenger side seat next to him, with the toolbox between the two of you. He immediately pulled out some pliers and started messing with the key slot, trying to get the broken bit of metal out.
You focused on his face, watching the way his eyes narrowed in concentration and the way his tongue subtly poked out from between his lips. That was something you noticed he did a lot. His brows were furrowed and from your angle it almost gave him a unibrow until he moved his fringe to the side. It was a little longer than it had been in the past two months and you wondered how often he cut it.
“Shit.” he muttered and leaned back against the seat, his hands resting on the wheel. “Yeah, it’s really jammed in there.”
“So I’m fucked out of this rust bucket?” you asked, frowning.
“I... there’s another option.” Eddie said, staring at the wheel. “It’s not a smart option. It’d be stupid, actually and not really safe. And I’d have to do something not completely within the letter of the law.”
You paused and stared at him. “Don’t you sell special K to high schoolers?”
“That was once and I overcharged them.” Eddie said. “I save that for a different clientele.”
For now. You thought.
“So, what’s the illegal method you have to help me with my car?” you asked.
Eddie took a deep breath and seemed to refuse to look at you. “We can hotwire it.”
“Hotwire... I’m sorry, what?” you looked at him surprised. “You know how to hotwire a car?” Had that been part of the show? You really wished that you had watched season four more than once over a year ago. It didn’t help that the longer you stayed here, the less you seemed to remember. You had your private box and notebook tucked away in your closet under a blanket, but you only pulled that out when you absolutely had to. Paranoia stopped you from reading everything too closely, and the idea of being caught with the things in that box... you shuddered to think about what would happen and how you’d explain yourself.
Eddie didn’t say anything for a moment before he pulled a screwdriver from the toolbox. “It’s up to you. I can hotwire the car and teach you how to start it up like that, or you can call a tow and pay to have the key fixed.”
You thought about the options for a while, you were already eating ramen for most of your meals to pay for the car. The car clearly wasn’t worth more than the couple hundred you had paid for it, and you really were convinced that you’d overpaid for it.
Fuck it.
Tumblr media
Eddie wasn’t gentle with the way he ripped open the dashboard and he started pointing out the different wires. You did stop him for a moment to grab a sheet of paper to write it down. Eddie insisted that after you’ve done it once, you wouldn’t need the cheat sheet, but you weren’t going to take any chances.
“So.. how’d you learn to do this?” you asked as he rubbed two wires together, flicking them almost. You didn’t think he’d answer, but then the car suddenly rumbled to life and he actually smiled, looking proud of himself.
“My dad.” Eddie explained. “We didn’t exactly have a traditional relationship growing up. Some kids got birthday parties and trips to the zoo, I got lessons on hotwiring cars and trips to the bar to learn cheap tricks for money. That only lasted until I was about ten when I stopped being small and cute.”
“Shit.” you said, looking at him, trying to decide on how you’re supposed to respond to that lore that was just dropped on you. Eddie didn’t open up often, and this had to be a sign of trust, right? “...Want me to fight your dad?”
Eddie snorted at your question. “I bet my uncle would take you up on that.” he shook his head. “No reason to, I haven’t seen him in years. He’s probably in jail right now, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s been locked up.”
“Want me to break in and beat him up anyway?” you offered. “I’m sure I could figure it out.”
“Your stealth rolls are shit.” he said.
“You sound like Gareth. What I can or can’t do in D&D is completely different from what I could do in real life.” you said.
“And how exactly do you plan on sneaking in to beat up my dad?” he asked, amusement in his eyes.
“I’ll walk in, bat my eyelashes, and ask to visit him. Then when he’s in front of me I start swinging.” you punched your own hand for good measure.
“I’m pretty sure you have to be a relative to visit someone in jail.” Eddie said. “And I’m not exactly itching to see him again, even if you decide to start a fight.”
“Okay, so my car is now on.” you said, on a roll now. “Hear me out, Eddie. You and I go to the courthouse right now and get married- I said hear me out, I’m not done-. I take your last name, use that to get into the prison to visit your dad, and then I can beat him up. I leave, we get divorced, we split with all of our own shit since we don’t have kids or shared property. Easy.”
Eddie rubbed his cheek as he laughed. “Bad idea, you’d be stuck with my last name. Munson doesn’t really get you anywhere in this town.”
“‘Lipton’ isn’t exactly doing me any favors either.” you pointed out. “Go big or go home, Eddie.”
“You are home.” he motioned to the trailer.
You weren’t, and you didn’t think you’d ever be again.
“So, is that a no on marriage?” you asked, leaning close to him with your hand over your heart. You gave him your best pout. “I’m heartbroken.”
“You were only going to marry me to get to my dad.” He gives you a playful shove away from him.
“Yeah, but you’d be a bonus.” you said, blurting out the words without thinking. Ah, fuck, you weren’t supposed to be flirting. Flirting was a bad idea, a very very bad idea. You had made the decision a while ago that it was a bad idea.
If he turned you down, it could be awkward and that could fuck up your chance to save him. If he dated you and it went badly that would make your chances worse.
Focus on the mission, and not the way Eddie sounds when he laughs or how impossibly pretty his eyes are get your shit together and stop that-
“Nice to know you think I’m such a prize.” Eddie said casually, maybe a little too casually for how he usually talked.
“When we divorce you can use that to fuel your music. I look forward to hearing the break-up album.” You tried to smooth your genuine flirting over by committing to the bit.
“If I ever sell out, I’ll write our divorce album.” Eddie replied. “Until then, I’ll stick with singing about Hell and demons and references to my campaigns.”
You don’t know why the idea of him writing songs about his campaigns made your stomach explode with butterflies, but it did. Maybe it was because you were now part of the campaigns and knowing that made you feel special. Like you were actually a part of something, part of him.
Stop that.
“Oh shit, I was actually doing something.” you realized and shook your head. “Right, I wasn’t just sitting here for fun. I had to go get groceries.”
“That would explain why you were sitting in here when I found you.” Eddie agreed. “Do you... Want company?”
He wanted to go grocery shopping with you? That surprised you a lot. It almost felt domestic-
“Yeah, sure.” you agreed, pushing any other thoughts out of your head. “I need you to come anyway.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, you showed me how to start the car but you didn’t tell me how to turn it off.”
Eddie laughed and hopped out of the car so that you could scoot back into the driver's seat. He hopped in next to you and it felt like things were swapped now. You had spent weeks in his passenger seat and now he was sitting in yours.
If this was going to be a regular occurrence, you were tempted to slap a BABY ON BOARD sticker on the back of your car.
As you pulled out of the trailer park, Eddie rummaged around his jacket and pulled out a cassette.
“Radio’s broke.” you warned as he stuck the tape in and pushed play. To your surprise, music started playing through the speakers.
“Tape player isn’t.” he said, looking proud of himself. “You can keep this one.”
“Keep...?” you asked. He’d loaned to tapes before, but that was always with the promise you’d return them.
“Yeah, I already have all these songs.” Eddie fidgeted with one of his rings casually. “I thought you might need something to fill the silence. You know, since you’re always coming over to listen to music with me.”
You really did, the quiet of being home alone had been grating on you and you had been spending as much time as you could with Eddie at his place.
“Is this your way of giving me a hint that I’ve overstayed my welcome?” you asked wryly, feeling a knot in your stomach at the thought.
“No! No, not that.” Eddie said quickly. “No, uh... I just thought you’d like these songs. You told me you liked a few of them.”
“So... you made me a mixtape?” you asked, trying to remain calm despite the fact that your brain was screaming.
“I had some time to kill, and you were complaining about not having anything to listen to so...” he shrugged.
Maybe you’d ask him to marry you for real. You didn’t even had a tape player, or anything other than your car to listen to it but you didn’t care.
Next up, get a tape player for Emergency Vecna Use. And batteries. All the batteries. You added to the endless list of to-do’s to prepare you for Hawkins High’s Spring Break.
“Thank you.” you said, feeling genuinely touched that he went out of his way to do that for you. “Really. I’ll listen to it until it disintegrates.”
“I’ll make you a new one when that happens.” Eddie promised.
Conversations drifted back into easy territory after that. Hellfire, dungeons and dragons, comics, work. It felt so easy talking to him in these moments when it was just the two of you. It had been so long since that first disastrous hang out session, but somehow he’d still let you keep hanging out.
You wished that things could be different.
For now, you just decided to do what you did best when hanging out alone with him. You pretended that your ID was legitimate, that you were some vague relative of his drug supplier, and that you two could be normal friends, doing normal things.
For now, that would have to be enough.

Getting back into rp has got me thinking about twine again. It was inevitable that I'd start thinking about either this or a ttrpg campaign.

the way that in the books the tunnel of love is a silly goofy side adventure that vaguely touches on the messed up relationships on the gods and kinda percy and annabeths dynamic and grover is a little useless comedic relief side kick
and in the SHOW its a dark creepy in depth exploration of the series's themes and an incredibly emotional never been done before dialogue and scenes of percabeth bonding because of their respective relationships to the institutional systems of the gods and their belief systems and fate and CHOOSING YOUR OWN FATE AND CHOOSING NOT TO PERPETUATE THE TOXIC TRADITIONS OF THE GODS AND CHOOSING EACH OTHER (i sobbed through the whole episode) plus!!!!!!! grover is NOT USELESS AND ACTUALLY GETS INFO??????? OUT OF ARES?????? THROUGH THERAPY POWERS??????????????? and ARES got a character study??????? and said some hypocritical and deeply relevant things about the systems of family and power and war and violence interpersonally and institutionally
literally the show is so good oh my GODSJ it has to be more serious because they are leaning way more into the themes of the series which takes rick a little longer to do in the books and these themes are deep and serious!!! and require careful attention and discussion !! like you cant constantly roast medusa and echidna if we are supposed to be questioning their monstrosity and taking them seriously as victims and mothers and survivors and maybe just as human and monstrous as we are and you have to update the tunnel of love from a goofy side adventure to a serious dark and creepy examination of the gods' messed up family abuse and abandonment and choosing NOT to go with that like. damn

“In This Life, and the Next. I Swear.”
Tumblr media
Happy Holidays, have a bittersweet reincarnation fic.
Summary: Mizu may not believe in reincarnation, but you do. You'll believe in it enough for both of you. You may not be strong, but your soul is. You'll carry her to a better lifetime.
Content Warnings: Did your really think no one would die in a reincarnation fic? Hmmm?
“Next lifetime, you have to court me,” you murmur into Mizu’s neck as her fingers trace along the bare skin of your back where you lie atop her. “None of this... stoic loner act where I have to wear you down into letting me love you. Yeah?”
Mizu snorts, her other hand resting over her eyes. “Not on your life.”
Making an offended noise, you bite her collarbone in retaliation, hearing her laughter fill the inn room.
“When we come back, I want our lives to be simple,” you say as Mizu helps you down from the horse you borrowed on your escape from the last town.
Resisting the urge to let a sigh slip at this fantasy coming back up again, she mutters, “Yeah? You’d prefer to have a boring life, after you basically attached yourself to me and Ringo to escape your home?”
“Well yeah, I’m getting all of my adventuring done in this life cycle.”
“And you don’t want that again?” Mizu starts to lead the horse toward the outer skirts of the city, hoping to find a stable to leave it without being spotted.
You walk alongside her, studying her passive expression. “I do." A beat. "But I want you to have peace more.”
Her eyes dart to you, genuinely caught off guard. The openness, the honesty in your face has a bubble of overwhelming emotion welling up in her chest.
Her head turns back to the road, retreating into her silence to avoid speaking and risking her voice betraying her.
But after a few minutes of her staring off into the distance, she quietly says with a softened brow, “That’s kind.”
‘Do you regret choosing this life, knowing how quickly it will all end? Or did you walk into it blindly, optimistic for some happier resolution?’
Mizu jerks you up into her arms, apologizing frantically over and over as you scream in pain when she applies pressure to the stab wound deep in your stomach. She tenses her grip as your body tries to seize and jerk away from the splitting, hot pain radiating through your nerves from pressure on the gash. You’re too scared to look down and see your own insides peeling away from each other.
Taigen and Ringo are fending off the last few bounty hunters, the clashing of swords and knives fading into the background as you dig your bloodied fingers into her haori. “Come find-find me again,” you say with frantic eyes, swallowing back another mouthful of metallic blood forcing its way up your burning throat.
“What?!” Mizu’s attention is torn between keeping an eye on her back and wrapping a torque around your middle from the fabric she torn off your kosode.
You grab her face, leaving a bloody streak on her cheek as you force her to look at you. Her widened blue eyes are forced to look into yours with no barrier, her glasses lost somewhere in the snow from the fight. You can feel how fast your body is losing warmth. The edges of your vision are blurring, and the draw to fall asleep is growing more powerful than the burning gap in your stomach. Mizu may not know how to die, but you-
‘I’m so sorry, my love. I’m so, so sorry.’
You need her to hear you before everything stops. So you grip her cheek and stare into her panic-stricken eyes. You’re scared too, but you’re more scared of coming back to this world and not seeing her again than you are of not coming back at all.
“Come find me again.”
Mizu hates the concept of promises, and the bigger and more impossible they sound the more she avoids them. But you nose is turning pink from the cold, or from your crying. Tears are trailing down the sides of your temples, cutting through any blood stains across your face.
And she hates promises.
Tears well in her own eyes as she clenches her teeth against a violent sob.
But she hates denying you proof that she loves you more. If you pass without it… if you die with the last words in your ears being 'I can't'…
Every whisper and cry of “Onryō” she’s ever heard echo louder and louder in her head until they're all scream chanting in unison. She blinks, and for a heart-freezing moment your terrified eyes turn her shade of blue.
“Onryō!”
“ONRYŌ!”
"𝔬n҉𝔯y҉𝔬o҉𝔫r҉𝔶o҉𝔬n҉𝔯y҉𝔬o҉𝔫r҉𝔶o҉𝔬n҉𝔯y҉𝔬-"
Her hand lifts away from the rapidly growing stain of blood coming through the makeshift torque across your abdomen and settles on your cheek.
She forces the corners of her mouth up into a reassuring smile as her own body trembles.
“Okay,” her voice wavers as she blinks out tears. “I’ll come find you.” Her voice is like a child making their first vow. “I’ll, I’ll come find you again.”
You smile weakly, and despite her own forced one, her eyes fill with terror for just a moment at the blood staining your teeth.
You reach up and tug her hair out of its high bun, watching it tumble around her shoulders.
You need your soul to memorize what she looks like when she’s not hiding. For next time.
Your own smile wavers. “You have to. I won’t… I won’t forgive you if you don’t.”
The fragile look on her face crumples into despair. Mizu leans her temple against yours as the sobs overtake her, her long hair draping over both of your faces and blocking out the world. “I will. I will I will I will I will I-“
Her fractured voice fades away, and your vision swims.
But your soul is at peace.
‘It's your turn, Mizu.’
‘I ended up burying you with as many red spider lilies I could scavenge. They’ll help guide you to the next life. I made Ri( ) swear to bury me next to you with just as many. If he’s around to collect my corpse when I go. If anyone is. ( )I used to not care if anyone did, as long as I finished my mission. But now I’m terrified something happens and I can’t keep my promise.
I’m sorry. I miss you. I’m sorry I made a promise that’s out of my hands.
( )
I’m sorry.’
You stare down at the spread of papers and antique diaries written in kanji. You’re trying to organize them by chronological order based on context from the letters and diaries, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult as you go. Especially with words smudged and faded by centuries of time. You rub your eye behind your glasses.
‘She really is making this hard for me.’ You sigh through your nose as you bite down on the end of your pen.
“Excuse me?”
“Hm?” You glance to your side, surprised to be pulled from your work and come face to face with probably the most gorgeous woman you’ve ever seen. “Hello?”
“Sorry,” she smiles, lowering her head to pull her tinted glasses off. “I just saw you over here and uh-“ her expression goes a little strained as she looks for the right words. “I just, uh-”
You glance between her and the spread of antique writing from the archives. “Are you the person that checked these out last? Do you need them back?”
“No. I just-" She makes a face. Whatever she planned to say when she came over was quickly unraveling. Her eyes dart away, and land on the diaries. Her eyebrows furrow slowly, something flickering in her blue eyes.
Very pretty eyes…
She jerks her chin down at the spread of papers. “What is that?”
A little thrown off at the changes in conversation, you pick up one of the diaries. “Um, this is work for my master thesis. I’m studying unknown woman and queer history of Edo Japan.” Your fingers drum over the cover. “Came across this treasure when going through the archives. It’s a bunch of writing from a rogue swordsman to his lover after her death. But in my review of it, I’m positive I can prove that he was actually a woman,” you grin a little with pride, shifting your weight side to side with delight at getting to discuss your research.
“Lesbian samurai,” she laughs lowly, eyes warm.
“Something like that,” the corners of your lips lift up.
“Well that’s really fascinating,” her fingers trail across the edge of the table as she steps closer. “I’d love to hear more about it. Maybe… over dinner?” The corner of her mouth grimaces for a moment, her eye twitching once with frustratation at herself with that cheesy delivery.
Your lips part, eyes widening with a breathless little “Oh.”
The woman gains confidence from how your eyes light up behind your glasses as you flush. Her hand squeezes her shoulder, a nervous tic. “I’m sorry. I saw your over here and had to give it a shot.”
“No, I’m glad you did,” you’re quick to reassure her. You look up at her with bright eyes as you dig through your backpack for notebook paper.
“I wouldn’t have forgiven you if you didn’t.”
A tilt of her lips, her hand outstretched. “Mizu.”
You introduce yourself.
You hold out the pen and paper to get her number, and she asks as she leans over to scribble it out on the table, “Anything good in those letters?”
“Most of it’s pretty grief heavy,” you smile sadly. “But in a poetic and romantic way? Like, even though her love was gone, probably pretty young, she kept her memory alive as she fought through life.”
Mizu glances up at you, and something tightens in your throat and sinks into your stomach. You don’t know why you admit quietly, “The first time I read them I started crying in the archive room.”
A beat, where you feel dread creep up your neck at suddenly tanking the mood.
Her face grows impassive, deadly quiet for a moment.
“I’m sorry,” she whispers.
You quickly blink back tears that come on alarmingly fast. “What?”
Mizu blinks too, straightening up. “Just, sorry that it made you sad. I guess.” She smiles again, albeit a little smaller this time, and hands over the paper. “I guess I’ll see you? Hopefully soon?”
A soft laugh huffs out your nose as that melancholic moment passes. “Yeah,” your hand brushes against the inside of her palm as you take the paper. “Really soon.”
She leaves you with a satisfied grin, her nose scrunching up as she turns and walks off.
You watch her go, feeling something tighten in your stomach again at how relaxed she looks.
You look down at her number, and see that she slyly signed it with the kanji for “Promise”.
As you begin to organize the letters to skim through them again, your hesitate on the one you had just been reviewing. You hold it and the notebook paper up side by side.
The letter unfolds and a single, dried, book pressed red spider lily flutters to your feet.
Mizu perfectly copied the handwriting of the swordswoman’s kanji.
“Huh.”

"Do You Resent Me?" (Astarion x Tav)
-> pairing: Astarion x Tav -> content: fluff/angst -> summary: In which Tav wonders whether Astarion resents her for convincing him to choose to reject the Black Mass ritual and not Ascend. Full of angsty fluff.
-> notes: The finished version of the WIP I posted yesterday. Astarion & Tav draws all the angst and cheesy fluff out of me 🥹
——————
“Do you resent me?”
Astarion looks up, wearily, from the corner of the Elfsong Tavern room that they had been staying in for some time now.
“Darling….what would I have to resent you for…?”
You slowly walk over to his corner of the room, and sit beside him on the edge of the bed. You observe him as he turns his gaze over to the hands in his lap.
“It…just feels like…you may have made your choice because of…me.”
Astarion turns his head to look back at you, betraying nothing in those crimson eyes at the moment, but listening.
“If I wasn’t around….you would have been free to make the choice you always wanted,” you continued, your eyes glassing over as you ponder the thoughts that have been plaguing you since the moment Astarion made his choice in the Szarr palace.
“The freedom that you always craved… did I take that away from you?”
Astarion’s eyes widened as you made your declaration.
“You… think it wasn’t the right choice?”
“Not that,” you tried to clarify. “Maybe… maybe I don’t know what the right choice is. But what mattered is… your choice.”
“You trusted me. You trusted me with a choice that, in the end, goes back centuries…” your voice starts to shake. “A choice with consequences you must live with for…eternity.” You look up at him as tears finally threaten to pour from your eyes. “What right did I have, to ask you to sacrifice yourself to the shadows?”
Astarion stares at you as he ponders your statement. He looks away from you as he stares at the cracked, drying paint on the wall of the old room.
“I think about it every minute, every moment.” Astarion speaks slowly, softly. “I think about the colours of the city. The warmth of the rays at dawn, beckoning me towards the next day. I think about the sanguine hunger I have suffered for over 200 years, and how I could be free from that pain. Free from all limitations. And how that will never be now… once the parasite is destroyed.”
You look up at him in despair as your body threatens to let out a sob.
“And I think about… how it would never be enough.”
It was your turn for your eyes to widen. His gaze had softened as his fingers move to entwine in your own.
“I see the colours through your eyes, through the stories that you tell me of your adventures. I feel the warmth through your skin as you lay beside me every night.”
“And your blood can sate me better than any power can.” You giggle as he smirks, softly wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Before you, before this nautiloid fiasco … I had no reason to want anything else but freedom and power. I only lived to escape what I was. I had everything to gain. And nothing to lose. So ofcourse, this Ascension seemed like an obvious choice.”
“But everything changed,” Astarion said breathily. “From the moment you wormed your way into my heart…you became a complication that I never expected. Suddenly, I had everything to lose.”
“I would have stayed,” you say thickly.
“I know you would,” Astarion says sadly, “but would you have been happy?”
“I probably would have been happy…happier than I was, for sure.” Astarion stares distantly at the wall as he speaks. “But where would that happiness end? What would sate me, if my happiness was dependent on power? I would have to take more, control more, be more…it is surely the fate that befell Cazador, that befalls all with power…more power than they know what to do with.” Astarion winces as he utters his late master’s name. “The need for power, for control, can never be sated. It would never be enough. Nothing would ever be enough.”
“But you, with me, here? That is enough. You are enough. We are enough.”
You pause as you ponder his words for a moment.
“Am I?” you whisper weakly as you stare at your entwined hands.
You feel the chill of his hands as they move up to hold your face tightly, and tilts your head up to look at him. The intensity in his eyes at that moment was like nothing you’ve ever seen on him before.
“Listen to me,” he says firmly, staring fiercely into your eyes, as if he was speaking through to your soul. “There is nothing in the world that I wouldn’t sacrifice to remain here by your side. You are my eternity. My mad love. Besides,” Astarion smiles as he stares into your eyes. “I still think it was the right choice, regardless. If I could go back and do it all over again, I’d make the same choice. Every time.”
Astarion’s words cause the tears that you were holding back to creep up to the surface, as your body begins to wrack with heavy sobs, as you let out the doubt and fear that you have been holding since you both learned that the Ascension was a thing – since you have contemplated that potential decision every minute of every day, since the moment Astarion asked you to help him, and you convinced him to give away that power, to save those souls, to save himself. Astarion pulls your head to his chest and holds you tightly as you shake against him.
“My darling, why do you weep? Don’t sell yourself so short. No one else has a heart like you. You’re the only one,” Astarion whispers into your ear.
“I love you,” you declare into his shirt, tears still staining the soft, white material.
“I love you too,” Astarion says, leaning backward, pulling you down with him until he was laying on his back, with your head resting on his chest, hands softly caressing your hair. “I can’t imagine another way I would want to spend the rest of my days, my love. I’m not afraid – not anymore. And especially not of our future.”
And that is how you both fell asleep, with the two of you in eachother’s arms and your dreams of the future in eachother’s hearts.
