Ah Watcher moving to a streaming service. I have some DEEPLY mixed feelings on this.

On one hand, they've presented themselves as "anti-capitalist members of the leftist club" for essentially their entire careers. Going as far as to push anti-capitalist ideas front and center in MANY episodes of their shows. I absolutely understand how the audience they built by doing that is feeling betrayed by them doing a very very obvious financially motivated choice! It feels scummy! It feels like you've been lied to.

But I also understand that Watcher is a business.

Not only is Watcher a business, it is an independently run business, trying to make money solely off of YouTube advertisments, merch, and patreon. Given the production value of the stuff it makes, that's hard. Because the reality is it is INCREDIBLY hard to make money in this way, you are essentially scraping together as many pennies as you can through as many means as you can to try and keep everything afloat. That's for creators trying to support just themselves and a few members of their family. A whole company? Not sustainable. Not with what they make.

If they wanted to keep expanding, or maybe even wanted to stay afloat at all, their options were: Better monetize their content (streaming) or get bought out. And I think they COULD have gotten bought out, but we saw what happened to Rooster Teeth. Indies getting bought does NOT always end well and puts you under a lot of restrictions as you now need to appeal to your parent company, which could shut you down at any moment if you aren't proving profitable enough for them.

So... I get why Watcher did this. Do I think they approached it in the best way? Honestly, I'm not sure, they're leaving all their videos up, and they're still posting premieres to YouTube, so there won't be NO free content at all, but this will alienate a large part of their audience.

It's a complicated situation, but I don't think we should treat it as "corporate greed" on the same level as giants like Disney and HBO. It's hard to be indie in this world, and who knows if this gamble will even pay off. We're going to have to wait and see

This strike effectively stops the ENTIRE entertainment industry. No shows. No movies. No premieres. No award shows. No fun little interviews. No signings at con. Nothing. Even the tabloids are going to be affected by this.

I just CANNOT imagine how greedy and short-sighted the AMPTP must be to think a dual strike is something they can outlast when many of the major studios are already experiencing serious financial trouble. You really think you can ride this out when the 2023 box office is already weak? When the 2020-2022 box offices were even weaker? When streaming services are just not growing anymore?

Who the fuck is going to watch whatever trash you come up with when there are no real names attached and no meaningful way to promote it?

It's just baffling.

Dylan O’Brien Sets ‘Twinless’ With James Sweeney Directing & Starring; Republic Pictures Takes Global On Three Point Capital & David Permut Production

EXCLUSIVE: Dylan O’Brien is set to headline in James Sweeney‘s dark comedy Twinless, which the latter wrote and will also star in. Republic Pictures has taken global rights to the movie. Cameras are currently rolling on the movie in Portland, OR. O’Brien will executive produce.

The pic follows two young men who meet in a twin bereavement support group. An unlikely bromance develops between them. Twinless follow Sweeney’s directorial debut, Straight Up, which notched the filmmaker a Best First Screenplay nom at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards.

Three Point Capital is financing the film with Ali Jazayeri, David Gendron and Liz Destro also serving as EPs.

Twinless is produced by Academy Award nominated producer David Permut and Permut Presentations (Hacksaw Ridge, Face/Off) whose most recent Netflix movie, Rustin, garnered Colman Domingo a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Miky Lee (Parasite) Vice Chairwoman of CJ and who most recently executive produced the Oscar nominated film Past Lives, serves as EP.

Permut Presentations Director Of Development Alex Astrachan co-produces.

Permut said, “I was absolutely knocked out by James’ first film Straight Up and was determined to work with him. I immediately responded to the originality and provocative concept of Twinless. The dark comedy depicts complex characters in such an irreverent, emotional and hysterical way. The chemistry between Dylan, who portrays the role of identical twin brothers, opposite James’ character is absolutely combustible.”

O’Brien’s most recent film is the independent feature Ponyboi, in which he plays a villainous pimp and small-time drug dealer, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He will next be seen in the upcoming films SNL 1975 (from director Jason Reitman) as Dan Aykroyd, Caddo Lake (from the writing-directing team of Logan George and Celine Held, and producer M. Night Shyamalan), and Anniversary (a thriller co-starring Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch and Phoebe Dynevor). The $1.7 billion grossing star is well-known to audiences from his work in The Maze Runner franchise, as well as the hit MTV series Teen Wolf.

Jim Carter: I’m here today as an Equity member of 50-odd years to stand behind SAG-AFTRA. I fully support it. Most Equity members do, because their fight is our fight. What they’re doing is absolutely right and I applaud them.

Jim Carter: We’re not being paid properly for our work. Streaming services take our work and we have no control over where it’s shown or how many people see it. They’re not open about how many people see things so we don’t get properly recompensed for it. That’s ridiculous. Our performance isn’t just for the premiere and opening night; it’s for as long as it lasts, and we should be fairly recompensed for that.

Imelda Staunton: SAG-AFTRA strike isn’t an American problem, or an English problem but rather a global problem. [The] streaming services seem to be paying themselves and not the creatives. The issue of AI is here. We need to talk about how it’s going to affect people’s financial circumstances. Most actors and most writers and performers seem to be at the bottom of the pile when the pay packet is issued, so I think that needs sorting out as soon as possible.

Operation Warp Speed Architect Arrested

U.S. Army Rangers on Saturday arrested Operation Warp Speed architect Moncef Slaoui, the Moroccan-born pharmaceutical mogul who in May 2020 spearheaded the administration’s efforts to poison 300 million Americans by January 2021, a source in General Eric M. Smith’s said.

Slaoui largely flew under the radar throughout the Plandemic. The media seldom mentioned his name, focusing instead on publicly influential figures like Fauci, Birx, and Collins, articulate public servants who spoke better English. Our source said Slaoui was relegated to media obscurity because the administration thought he looked shady and that Americans wouldn’t trust him.

And Americans would have been right not to trust a man who spent 30 years as GlaxoSmithKline’s head of vaccines department and was working at Moderna when Trump picked him to helm Warp Speed. At the time, Trump called Slaoui “one of the most respected men in the world in the production and, really, on the formulation of vaccines,” but was merely parroting what subordinates Michael Pence, Alex Azar, Admiral Brett Giroir, and Robert Redfield told him. They and others, our source said, were part of a major conspiracy to deceive President Trump into putting Slaoui in charge of OWS.

Slaoui faced criticism for holding $10 million in Moderna stock options and working as an advisor to Brii Biosciences, a firm with sizable Chinese investments. To avoid a conflict of interest, he begrudgingly resigned from those positions, then began working with then-Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar—who praised Slaoui as “arguably the world’s most experienced and successful vaccine developer”—to hasten Warp Speed.

Our source said that Slaoui, despite resigning from Moderna, continued receiving payouts exceeding $56 million after the FDA granted Moderna emergency-use authorization on December 8, 2020.

However, the military was less interested in Slaoui’s financial motivations than his knowledge that Moderna’s experimental vaccine had killed 34 of 600 Phase II trial participants in June 2020. White Hats, our source said, now have a wealth of evidence—physical and digital documents authored by Slaoui—proving he knew the vaccine caused myocarditis and potentially lethal blood clots but never publicly disclosed that information, even after Trump personally asked him if the shots were truly safe and effective.

“We have a treasure chest of incriminating evidence on Slaoui. This guy was one of the biggest violators of the Plandemic. We got a letter he wrote to Pence, saying he knew vaccines would kill people and that they could blame Trump for pushing Operation Warp Speed on the public. We have tons more that will be made available when he faces a military tribunal and hopefully gets hanged. We had more than enough proof to get him,” our source said.

The arrest, he added, came after Gen. Smith talked with Colonel J.D. Keirsey, a White Hat council member and commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Army’s premier light infantry unit and special operations force within the United States Army Special Operations Command.

On Saturday morning, Rangers bashed down the door to Slaoui’s 7,500-sq-ft home in Zebulon, North Carolina. One of his three sons, Hussein Mohamad Abdul Slaoui, was present and pulled a pistol on the Rangers. He was shot dead, and the Rangers took Slaoui into custody. He shouted, “sayantaqim li allah,” or “Allah will avenge me,” as the Rangers shoved him into a civilian vehicle.

“We got him. We got the bastard,” our source said. “He’s just one of many. But we’re chipping away at them.”

As an aside, Slaoui was fired from chairman of the board of directors of Galvani Bioelectronics, a subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline, in March 2021 after several young male employees accused him of sexual harassment.

The figure of Hego Damask is a mysterious one. Not only was he an early political ally of the late Emperor, but he has been found to have been involved in many major political and economic moves the Old Republic made in its waning years. Allegations have come to light recently that Damask, who passed away shortly after the Naboo-Gungan War against the Trade Federation, was deeply involved with the Trade Federation's fight to gain Functional Constituency in the Old Republic's Galactic Senate and the ascension of the Hill Clan to leadership of the IGBC.

Football fandom: Are the minority ruining it for the majority?

What is it that distinguishes ‘supporters/fans’ with ‘spectators?’ I would argue the difference will help you grasp the notion of fandom and how some people reach their levels of devotion and intense interest towards their chosen sports team. I would define a spectator as a person who can observe sport but feel no direct emotion during or after the event, it will not leave a lasting memory. In comparison, supporters and fans who will personally live every moment while watching a game and have an intense emotional devotion towards their chosen team. Moreover, fandom offers people an escape from the ‘real world’ and allows them to invest their time and energy into something they have a strong passion and love for.

Is the outcome of a football game a life-or-death situation? The obvious answer to this question is no but to many football fans up and down the country and across the world they may not give such a straight answer.

Social media

The morals of fandom is something that has been questioned by many, with various events happening within football to spark these conversations. Examples of this include fans confronting players from their ‘beloved’ team either in real life or via social media, which has been both positive and negative for the connection between fan and athlete. I have found examples of both ends of the spectrum on the influence of social media on the modern-day fan to player interaction:

Positive: Marcus Rashford in Lockdown creating a strong movement via social media in funding children with meals.

Negative: The three players who missed penalties in the EURO 2021 final receiving racist abuse on social media.

‘The fan experience doesn’t stop at the turnstile, it now continues after the match on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.’ (Toney, 2013)

Health

A football fans' devotion towards their team is reflected in the levels they go to show their support. Forms of devotion can be shown in many different ways and can cause physiological and psychological issues.

‘Fans who are strongly fused with their team - that is, have a strong sense of being 'one' with their team - experience the greatest physiological stress response when watching a match,’ said Dr Martha Newson, researcher at the Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion, at Oxford.

Dr Martha Newson at Oxford underwent a study by taking the saliva from football fans and found heightened levels of cortisol which increases blood pressure and damages weakened hearts. Cortisol also has increased psychological issues such as it gives people a feeling of impending doom, that their life is in danger, or they are under attack.

Economic

The amount a fan is willing to spend also shows the levels of devotion they possess. In the Premier League the average match going football fan will be spend 13% of their annual salary per season on tickets, merchandise and food and drink on a match day. This statistic doesn’t take into consideration the added TV subscriptions and streaming services to watch football in order to show their ongoing support.

‘With fans now running the risk of being priced out of football, we’re glad to uncover the true cost that fans are now expected to pay.’ Layla Johnson, Regional Manager at Creditfix.

The European Super League

When this situation arose in April 2021, 12 of Europe’s biggest teams proposed to form their own league, leaving the rest of the world of football behind. This caused a huge rift across fanbases with 79% of all fans strongly opposing the idea, 89% believe it’s for financial gain and not in the fans' interests.

Fans began turning on their own teams and questioning their devotion all together resulting in marches outside stadiums and boycotting games as well as asking for their teams to be heavily fined and have points deducted. This shows the extremes of this situation with devoted fans turning against their beloved clubs due to their insensitive actions.

Violence and crime

The role of being a fan can be taken to extremes, with their love and devotion being taken too far resulting in violence and crimes being committed.

For example, this season both West Ham United and Aston Villa had fans banned from European fixtures due to a small group of people causing issues in foreign cities. These leaves a large majority of fans missing out on potentially a once in lifetime opportunity of watching their team play in European competition and also labelling all supporters as ‘hooligans’ even though it’s the minority rather than the majority.

In 2022, Nottingham Forest drew Leicester City at home in the FA Cup - considered to many as an East Midlands derby. With there being a strong dislike between the two sets of ‘fans’ it resulted with fighting in the streets and shops and a pub window being smashed. This left many fans of the two respected clubs after seeing the aftermath take to social media platforms and voice their embarrassment for what they have witnessed.

After the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown (March 2020-July 2021) there was an increased rise in incidents occurring in football games across England and Wales. Such as a 59% increase in football arrests compared to pre-pandemic, hate crime incidents rose by 99% and number of pitch invasions up by 127%.

Seeing change in the future

Sport as a whole is such an influential environment for many and is a brilliant way to connect with people, have conversations and debates on a variety of topics. Fandom as a concept shows the extremes on both sides; on one hand you can see people come together with a common goal of supporting their team and on the other hand taking their passion and devotion too far, representing it in a negative sense by expressing their views via aggressive words or actions. The positive change required in sport fandom is for the people to use their voice in a way to ‘block out’ the negativity by having great conversations which spark ideas and discussions across groups of people.

For disability awareness month I'm gonna give y'all a run down of Cummings v Premier Rehab Keller

""The high court ruled {April 28, 2022} 6-3 against Jane Cummings, who is deaf and legally blind, determining that emotional distress from discrimination is insufficient harm to warrant a lawsuit under four federal civil rights laws.

Cummings sued after Premier Rehab Keller in Texas declined to provide her a sign language interpreter at her physical therapy appointments. The therapy provider said that Cummings could use notes, lip reading and gestures to communicate instead.

Cummings argued that Premier Rehab Keller discriminated against her on the basis of disability, violating the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Affordable Care Act, which apply to facilities that receive federal funds like the therapy provider does."

In addition to the Rehabilitation Act and the Affordable Care Act, the ruling applies to the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

In dissent, Justice Stephen G. Breyer noted that discrimination often harms in ways that are purely emotional.

However, a federal judge determined that Cummings’ only injuries were “humiliation, frustration and emotional distress” and indicated that the laws in question did not allow for the recovery of damages in such cases. A federal appeals court affirmed the ruling and a majority of the Supreme Court agreed."

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972:

requires that no person be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination on the basis of sex under “any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:

prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in any program or activity that receives Federal funds or other Federal financial assistance.

Private Sector Good, Public Sector Bad? (2)

This is the second part of a look at former public services and utilities in Britain that have been privatised in the name of neoliberal economics and the mistaken belief that private enterprise is ALWAYS more efficient than publicly  run bodies.

Prisons

The first privately run prison in the UK was opened in 1992 under a Conservative government and private sector involvement in Britain’s penal system has grown steadily ever since. The UK is now second only to the USA in the number of privately run prisons.

Premier Custodial Group was formed in 1992 and in 2005 was the largest private company running UK prisons. It was a joint venture between the American private prison operator Wackenhut Corrections Corporation and the British firm Serco PLC. From a turnover of £7.52 million in 1994 it had increased its revenues to £127.4m, with pre-tax profits of nearly £10m, paying out a £2m dividend to shareholders. In 2002 Wackenhut was taken over by Group 4 Falck.

In 2003 Serco gained control of Premier, estimating that Premier's

 “income over the life of its existing contracts for five prisons, one secure training centre, two immigration facilities and court escort custody and electronic monitoring services was £2bn” (Cited in Prison Reform Trust: Private Punishment :Who Profits; January 2005)

Group 4 Securicor (G4S) was a company created in 2004 when Group 4 acquired Securicor. Since these takeovers these companies have gone from strength to strength, with Serco, G4S, and GEO Group branching into immigration and other services.

In 2018, the Guardian reported that the Home Office paid these companies:

 “hundreds of millions of pounds to run the UK’s immigration removal centres, but no one knows for certain just how profitable the industry is…Commercial confidentiality agreements mean the Home Office and outsourcing companies are not obliged to publish detailed financial information about immigration detention centres in the UK.” (Guardian: 10/10/22)

In 2022, one of these companies, Sodexo was awarded a £264 million UK prison contract over a ten year period. On receiving the contract, Paul Anstey, CEO, Government, Sodexo UK & Ireland stated:

“Our vision is to provide a secure and safe environment which reduces re-offending through education, builds new skills and offers respect, equality and inclusion.” (Facilities Management Magazine: 16/08/22)

If only that were true! As long ago as 2013 Sodexo Justice Services  was facing charges of prisoner torture and degradation.

'Cruel, inhumane and degrading': Female prisoner kept segregated in 'squalid' cell for five years.”  (Independent: 21/08/2013)

In 2016 a video of naked Prisoners pretending to be dogs led to an investigation into violence and humiliation of prisoners by Sodexo. In September 2017, a female prisoner died under Sodexo care. An inquest into her death concluded:

“serious failures at Sodexo run HMP Peterborough contributed to death of Annabella Landsberg”  (Inquest: 04/04/2019)

Another prison run by Sodexo was accused of residing over a “spice” epidemic, which led to the death of a male prisoner. (Manchester Evening News) In 2018 Sodexo was again accused of neglect and systematic failures resulting in the death of yet another inmate. In 2019, a different prison run by Sodexo was accused of “systemic breaches of inmate human rights”.

In February of this year 20 prison staff resigned from the Sodexo run HMP Lowdham Grange, which was deemed so unsafe the government was forced to take it over.

The appalling levels of service cited above are not restricted to Sodexo alone. In her book “Profiting from their misery: Britain’s private prisons”, Hatty Nestor reveals that:

“outsourcing companies like G4S encourage prisoners to work 40-hour weeks, all they are paid (is)  as little as £2 an hour. Such practices amount to slave labour. Companies are profiting from prison labour, paying fewer well-trained, low staff wages. In private prisons, staff are paid 23% less than public prisons, and they also outsource security, healthcare and cheap food. Private prisons aim for a profit margin of 8-10%, which is met by cutting costs and the increased exploitation of staff and inmates.”

Given that privately run prisons pay their staff less, are more overcrowded, and employ fewer prison officers you would think they would at least be more cost effective yet this isn’t the case. The governments own figures for 2022/23 reveal that it cost £32,762 per prisoner, per year in publicly run prisons, while the cost for privately run prisons was £33,628 per prisoner.  What is more, the government gives 23% of its allocated budget to private companies despite the fact their prisons only house 15% of the total prison population. It seems that whichever way you measure private prison success (apart form profits for its shareholders) private prisons do far worse than those still in the public sector.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he is in favour of granting Mississauga and Brampton their independence from Peel Region — a move that would fulfill the long-standing wishes of some politicians, and pave the way for a messy divorce.

At a news conference in Mississauga on Monday morning, Ford said he had “always been for an independent Mississauga,” suggesting that he is ready to split the municipalities apart.

That move could be finalized as long as both cities can work out the financial details over shared assets, infrastructure and the future costs for police, paramedics and other shared services.

It is unclear what this would mean for the Town of Caledon. The three municipalities of Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon make up the Region of Peel.

Splitting the three would likely spell the end of the Region of Peel.
