I am so excited for vassien 🥺

I need it. I want my friends to lovers. I want the understanding. The jealousy. I want them to be completely comfortable around each other (and that's the only place where they feel comfortable). I want long stares in a crowded room, with a small smile. I want Lucien to be the only who was never scared of Vassa's fire. I want banter and jokes - quinlar style. I want deep, serious conversations about the destiny of the world. I want them being nerds together. Lucien spending nights awake just to be with her, and then spending the days studying to break her curse + working for those 3 courts, and Vassa seeing how tired he is. Them taking care of each other. Vassa coming to Lucien every time she's stressed. I love that they are much more alike than elucien or elriel. I love couples that feel like two persons in one body 😅 really want them to be one of those.

I also think about their first time. I want it to be passionate in the beggining, and then gentle and caring, she above him on that pink couch. I want them to share their traumas and heal together.

So, yeah, I have many expectations. I feel like they could rival feysand in my heart.

To finish, I imagine Lucien taking her to see the Starfall. He would see Elain and Azriel together, and Elain would see how happier Lucien is with Vassa, even tho he thinks he can't love her like that. Actually, they would act like a couple long before being a couple. I imagine this angst happening on elriel's book. Gimme my friends to lovers, Sarah.

Koschei's Deal with Papa Archeron

As of now, we all believe Lucien is mates with Elain. When Elain came out of the cauldron, Lucien declared that she was his mate. How did this come to happen? How did the bond snap this quickly within basically their first interaction - when with other mates we see it takes more time for the bond to snap. Let’s discuss.

Something interesting is that as soon as Elain came out from the cauldron, Feyre states, “And for a moment, all I could think of was my father. What he would do, what he would say, when his most beloved daughter looked at him with a Fae face.” And what exactly would Papa Archreon say or do? 

At this point in the book we know Papa Archeron has not been with his daughters for months because he remains in the human lands doing who knows what, or as they thought. So it’s rather interesting that Elain goes into the cauldron, and this is the first thing Feyre thinks? Did SJM intentionally put in this line because her father did do something related to her becoming Fae? 

The next time we see Papa Archeron is in ACOWAR during the war when he comes with his ships, an army, and Vassa. We learn he’s been rather busy during these last couple of months. When Feyre asks who discovered Vassa, Drakon answers with 

““He calls himself the Prince of Merchants,” Drakon said. “Apparently, he discovered the human queens were traitors months ago, and has been gathering an independent human army to face Hybern ever since. He managed to find Queen Vassa—and together they rallied this army.” Drakon shrugged. “He told me that he’s got three daughters who live here. And that he failed them for many years. But he would not fail them this time.”

He discovered the human queens were traitors months ago? He found Vassa and was building this army for months? Could it be possible that Papa Archeron discovered Vassa way before Elain had a vision about her? Maybe even before Elain and Nesta went into the cauldron?

According to Lucien in ACOWAR, he learned Papa Arch made a deal.

““But your father, ever the negotiator..” A sad, small smile towards that burnt grass. “He managed to cut a deal with Vassa’s keeper to come here” “Nasty curse” 

Vassa’s keeper? This would imply Lucien is talking about Koschei. Papa Archeron surely would have made a huge trade to temporarily free Vassa. I mean he’s this powerful death God, and Papa Archeron is just a human who has nothing of value to offer…….besides his three daughters. 

Now before I go into what I think the deal involves, I will say I don’t believe Lucien was present during this deal. The book says that Lucien met up with Papa Arch and Vassa later on,

“Who?” Drakon’s brows narrowed. “Oh, the male with the eye. No. He met up with them later on—told them where to go.

Lucien knows there’s a deal because Papa Archeron probably told him there was one that happened in order to free Vassa. I mean anyone would have been curious as to how Papa Arch got Koschei to agree to temporarily free Vassa, his most prized possession. 

Now let’s go back to what the deal was. Could Koschei have been seeking something of equal value to Vassa? There was clearly something Koschei seeked in the first place - I mean this is a powerful Death God. What could he want from Papa Arch? I don’t have an exact answer on this one, but I have multiple guesses. Did Papa Arch trade Elain herself? After discussing it with @.rhysdanaan on Twitter, they brought up a good point of what if Koschei wanted Elain’s true love? Listen Koschei is an evil guy, and I think he could have easily twisted his words to Papa Arch making the deal come off as good, when in reality it wasn’t. It then led me to my conclusion that Koschei could have told Papa Arch that he could promise Elain true love. Mother Archeron did say, “Elain will wed for love and beauty” And maybe.. Just maybe Papa Archeron believed him and thought Koschei could fulfill this and seemed like an easy enough trade to free Vassa. 

I started to think about the reasons why Papa Arch went off and got his army and freed Vassa in the first place. And that’s because he wanted to be redeemed as a parent in the eyes of his daughters. He is doing this all for his daughters.

We don’t exactly know Papa Arch views on Graysen, but maybe it wasn’t favorable especially knowing Graysen hates faes. Did Koschei know in that moment, Elain’s true mate was Azriel? We don’t have a lot of information about these two, but they are connected by some things like the shadows, death, and the wind. Could this be another way Koschei is luring Azriel to him? Or could this just have worked out in Koschei’s favor? 

But still if Koschei didn’t know Azriel would be connected to Elain in that moment, Koschei still would have had other purpose involving Vassa. In a way, it makes sense that Koschei could be like Maeve from Throne of Glass series. SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ TOG: Maeve had known all along that Rowan and Aelin were mates, but she still created a fake bond for Rowan to be involved with another woman, who he thought was his real mate for many years. TOG and ACOTAR exist in the same mega-verse, meaning it is possible that the mating bond can be faked. If Maeve knew who his true mate was ahead of time, that could mean Koschei could know too. Especially if Maeve and Koschei are connected in some other way.. 

If Koschei did know Vassa’s true mate, which I’m assuming he did, he would have known it was Lucien. Koscehi obviously would not want Lucien to know his mate was Vassa. Therefore, he saw the opportunity to pair Elain with Lucien so he could keep Vassa to himself and to keep the curse on her. Koschei could have activated the spell when Elain went into the cauldron himself, or he could have gotten help from the three queens who sold Vassa to him. Either way, the mating bond spell with Elain and Lucien activated as soon as she turned fae, which is why Lucien realized so quickly compared to other mates. The spell had been activated. 

Why else would Koschei need Lucien away from Vassa? Well because he’s the only one able to break her curse. SJM LOVES Russian folktales and she obviously took inspiration from Swan Lake. In the tale the “swan” (Vassa = firebird) has a curse and it can only be broken by true love. However in the tale her master (the master being Koschei) disguised another woman so he could fall in love with her instead. The man in the tale confesses his love to the wrong woman, and the swan dies. This sounds VERY similar to what happened here - Koschei disguised another woman, Elain, to be Lucien’s mate so he could fall for her and NOT Vassa, so that her curse cannot be broken. Feyre and Helion (a man skilled in curse breaking magic) both tried to break her curse - but failed. Which means, it’s very likely the only way to break her curse is with true love. And coincidentally as we’re heading into ACTOAR5, presumably Elain’s book, Vassa’s time being free is almost up. We are going to have to deal with this mating bond mess in the next book. 

The line “What if the cauldron was wrong” was not added in the book for nothing. Especially because it was asked twice by both Feyre and Azriel. Clearly, it will be important and all revealed in Elain’s book. 

Why is it Azriel is the only one bothered by the Elain/Lucien mating smell? Why does it seem like he’s the only one able to smell it? Why is it that Azriel has only ever given his truthteller to Elain to use? Why is it he risked his life to enter Hybren’s camp to save Elain? Why is it that there are so many unspoken words between these two? Why does Azriel have this urge to protect Elain from danger? Why is it Elain was the one to get him over Mor for the first time in 500 years? Why was it that both Elain and Azriel were both willing to risk getting caught by Lucien to finally be together? Why is it Azriel was so angry and filled with rage that Rhys forbid him to stay away from Elain? 

It’s all because Elain and Azriel are really each other’s mates.

I don't understand why some people have to make it seem like the reason elain is uncomfortable with lu is because she loves him too much or is protecting herself bc she is afraid or some shit like that.

the reason elain is uncomfortable is because lu is part of her trauma and it's not something I invented, it's CANON. and even if he wasn't part of her trauma, elain has every right to say no and CHOOSE. (you know, the main theme of acomaf) She doesn't owe him anything the same as he doesn't owe her anything either. Like my girl didn't say "i belong to no one" to say she should give him a chance bc he is her mate.

where and with whom is elain comfortable? > with her family (this includes azriel and not lu) in the night court. (all of this is canon btw)

Isn't it better for elain's development to CHOOSE and fight against pre-established ideas about her? after not being able to choose anything in her life?

Isn’t Vassa implied to have feelings for Jurian? and Lucien acts a bit left out even if loyal?

Hmm I’m not quite sure where that would be implied. I feel like you’re referring to this quote maybe?

“And Jurian and Vassa?”

“At each other’s throats, as they like to be,” he said, a tad sharply.

I truly interpreted this as Lucien being annoyed by the bickering and honestly jealous because he’s starting maybe have feelings for Vassa.

And while that might be “interpretable” we also have these supporting Vassien:

1. Lucien being protective of her, setting his target on Koschei

Vassa peered at her hands, fingers flexing. “I fear what may happen if he ever gets free of the lake.” Lucien stared out the window—as if he could see the lake across a sea and a continent. As if he were setting his target.

2. SJM reminding us that Lucien went after Vassa (similar to how we’re reminded Az rescued Elain)

“Lucien had been there, Cassian recalled. Had gone with Nesta’s father to the lake where Vassa was held captive.”

3. Lucien showing that he feels pained for Vassa

“He could have sworn flames rippled across her blue eyes. Both Jurian and Lucien stared at her, the former’s face utterly unreadable, the latter’s pained.”

4. The IC acknowledging that Lucien is probably biased now towards Vassa

“Lucien can’t be unbiased in reporting to us on Vassa.”

5. Lucien laughing and being relaxed around her

“Vassa still remained inside, chatting with Lucien animatedly. I supposed that if she only had until dawn before turning back into a firebird, she wanted to make every minute count. Lucien, surprisingly, was chuckling, his shoulders loose and his head angled while he listened.”

6. (And my personal favorite) when Lucien BLUSHED while talking about Vassa

“Not for long— not if Vassa has anything to do with it.”

“You sound like an acolyte.”

Lucien blushed, “She’s got a foul temper and a fouler mouth.”

7. There’s also the fact that SJM gave them (what seems to me like) a badass couple name:

“A bird of flame and a lord of fire. I wondered if they’d found each other.”

8. Lucien has his eye that can see what others cannot that he says he hopes will help free her, plus his biological father is a breaker of enchantments

“This eye can see things that others can’t. Spells, glamours. Perhaps it can help me find her. And break her curse.”

9. Then, there’s my own theory about how SJM has been foreshadowing that Lucien will end up with a mortal love. There’s been two instances that Lucien has been associated with having a mortal lover when it’s not/no longer the case. Makes me think that it would be full circle for him to end up with a mortal lover in the end:

“I knew you liked to stoop low with your lovers Lucien, but I never thought you’d actually dabble with mortal trash.”

“And if Lucien had discovered that Elain was his mate beforehand [when she was still a mortal], it would have been…devastating to realize he’d only have a few decades.”

Also—just my own opinion, I find Jurian extremely suspicious still but that would be a post of its own so I won’t dig into it now, but let’s just say I don’t trust a man who pretended to reciprocate someone’s love just to crucify and chop her up.

Another ramble, thinking out loud.

At the end of ACOWAR the last we see of Elain and Lucien together is with Feyre. It’s clear he’s more interesting in speaking with Feyre though Elain keeps glancing at him. He’s already blushing at the thought of Vassa and singing her praises.

She even tells him to come to Velaris (with Feyre nudging her) and Lucien responds with a formal, “It would be my pleasure.”

Feyre leaves them so they can hopefully talk. It doesn’t seem like much comes out of it because in ACOFAS Lucien isn’t staying in Velaris, and Elain has no interest in him.

I wonder if when Feyre left them if they had an awkward few words or if Lucien wanted to hurry and clean up and do whatever was needed before sundown and Vassa being available. I’m sure Elain was happy to have any excuse to leave.

Whatever it is, neither Elain nor Lucien seems like they want to try. There is no can’t stay away between them or they hide it really well. We see others think Lucien is suffering but what is that suffering? Does he hate the bond as much as Elain? Does he feel guilty because he wants someone else?

I don’t think they end up together, but I want to see them have an honest conversation or two. I think both are at least decent people (though I think Lucien’s priorities and loyalty are not anything close to the Night Court, and Rhys can think Elain is enough to keep him on their side but I don’t think she is. If it became necessary to betray Elain or any of them for his new friends, I think he would do it) I want to find out both of their perspective on where they stand .

We’ve only seen povs from mates who in the end not only want and feel drawn to each other. Be interesting to see two who do not have that and what it means.

And remember Elain has two examples she sees everyday of mated couples who love and respect each other. She saw how hard Cassian tried for Nesta. I’m sure she’s heard Rhys and Feyre’s story and now lives with them.

Lucien has seen what it’s like for two unhappy people to live together. He’s witnessed his other suffer. I doubt he wants that for himself or anyone.

I think it’s behind clear that neither really want each other. There are hints of Lucien having feelings for Vassa, and much more than hints that Elain has real feelings for Azriel.

We need Elain’s book like yesterday.

Day 3 of @vassienweek - The Cursed Queen and the Spell-Cleaver

Setting aside the fact that I see chemistry between Vassa and Lucien, and that I think their personalities will match best out of their other possible pairings, there's definite poetry in the Lord of Fire who once had the following conversation with Feyre...

“You think I don’t know that? But does he honestly expect me to spend the rest of my life in that manor, overseeing servants and wearing pretty clothes?” Lucien watched the ever-young forest. “Isn’t that what all human women wish for? A handsome faerie lord to wed and shower them with riches for the rest of their lives?” I gripped the reins of my horse hard enough that she tossed her head. “Good to know you’re still a prick, Lucien.” - ACOMAF, chapter 3

... falling in love with a cursed human queen who is even more brash than Feyre. Vassa is going to set him straight on this point, if she hasn't already. 😌

I could write an entire essay on why I don’t think Elriel is endgame but I think I just need to say one thing (besides Elain and Lucien are mates):

We didn’t get to see their lust and feelings develop on page, and more importantly, in their POVs. We get Feyre seeing glances and blushes from across the room. Absolutely. I’m not denying that. But a romance book immediately starting with two characters already in love? That’s not SJMs way. She has ALWAYS made her couples struggle with their feelings before accepting and officially falling in love, even when the couples had secret attraction for each other.

Elriel has tension, but that’s already the peak of their relationship. It can’t get any higher, and in fact, it’s already going downhill with the bonus chapter.

It’s also not SJMs way to do a secret romance / cheating trope which I see a lot of people suggesting, because with a cheating trope, it only works if the person being cheated on is a bad person and did wrong on their partner. Lucien is not that man, you guys. Not at all. And what I’m getting from Elriels is they want Elriel’s book to be Elain and Az in love even though Rhys forbade it and Lucien either accepting it and going with Vassa because he loved her the entire time anyway (despite everything going against that) or him getting mad Elain went for Az instead and he calls for a blood duel.

I’m so sorry but Elriel just makes no sense to me. They have no struggle, no growth, no substance.
