I love that an intrinisic part of Page training in Tortall is waiting tables. Like, if you want to be a knight and truly understand the ways of Chivalry you must first experience... The Service Industry.

You can really tell when fantasy book art started to go downhill when people started bringing computers into it. I really miss the days of gorgeous, highly detailed hand-drawn cover art. When did stock images and barely detailed photos become mainstream for book art?

"One of the clerks is already dawning up a schedule," Kel said, and grinned. "I love clerks. I'd marry them all if I could."
- Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce, chapter 7, pg. 147.
^ the REAL reason Kel is the best and most relatable character ever- her biggest turn on is efficiency used specifically to make people's lives better and easier. Kingdom of Tortall, hurry up and legalize queer polycules so our lady in asexual armor can have the best most amazing relationship in history

Tobe: Why are you being nice to me?
Kel, internally: This is the most important conversation we'll ever have. I have to be very careful to say exactly the right things.
Kel, out loud: Well, my horse likes you.

I hope Neal’s daughter is his firstborn and when he’s like “are you crazy what do you mean you want to be a knight???” she just looks at him severely and says “a queenscove knight has served the crown for centuries and is a pillar of the kingdom”
“do you see what I have to deal with???”
and yuki & kel are just laughing their asses off

omg seeing you reblog that post just makes me want to talk about keladry of mindelan for a few hours. her sense of justice? her unflinching resolve? her deep and abiding kindness? i would die for her. not that she would let me.
I just re-read Protector of the Small so she's so fresh in my memory right now, too. Kel was everything I wanted to be when I was young, but I think I came out more of a Neal :P sarcasm and pedantry for the win
(actually my fiance and i were at dinner with a friend and both my friend and i posited that my fiance seems like someone who based his whole personality off Kel for real. and he admitted he read the books but didn't feel all that strongly about her so i guess he's just??? like that??)
no but you're so right about her unflinching resolve. like, idk if you've seen that thing about pragmatic characters, how they just see the bright, clean line from A to B? in a weird way, that's Kel. people normally think of that as ruthless pragmatism, but that's a values difference -- Kel is completely pragmatic, she always looks at things head-on and clear-eyed (when she can, I mean, she was a kid also so she did have her moments where she didn't understand something).
if chivalry is her values system, pragmatism is how she gets there. there's no faffing about trying to determine the next course of action, no worrying if she's making the right call. she just...knows what she's going to do, and commits herself wholly to that, and it's the kind of thing where if Kel sucked as a person that would be a villainous quality. but she's got her deep-held beliefs and fortunately they've made her just a decent fucking person who is also the most driven motherfucker alive.
Paladin of my heart Keladry of Mindelan.
