The Arrival of the Golden Snitch
From the early 1100s, Snidget-hunting had been I popular among many witches and wizards. The Golden Snidget (see Fig. B) is today a protected species, but at that time Golden Snidgets were common in northern Europe, though difficult to detect by Muggles because of their aptitude at hiding and their very great speed.
Tumblr media
The diminutive size of the Snidget, coupled with its remarkable agility in the air and talent at avoiding predators, merely added to the prestige of wizards who caught them. A twelfth-century tapestry preserved in the Museum of Quidditch shows a group setting out to catch a Snidget. In the first portion of the tapestry, some hunters carry nets, others use wands, and still others attempt to catch the Snidget with their bare hands. The tapestry reveals the fact that the Snidget was often crushed by its captor. In the final portion of the tapestry we see the wizard who caught the Snidget being presented with a bag of gold.
Snidget-hunting was reprehensible in many ways. Every right-minded wizard must deplore the destruction of these peace-loving little birds in the name of sport. Moreover, Snidget-hunting, which was usually under taken in broad daylight, led to more Muggle broomstick sightings than any other pursuit. The Wizards’ Council of the time, however, was unable to curb the sport’s popularity - indeed, it appears that the Council itself saw little wrong with it, as we shall see.
Snidget-hunting finally crossed paths with Quidditch in 1269 at a game attended by the Chief of the Wizards Council himself, Barberus Bragge. We know this because of the eyewitness account sent by Madam Modesty Rabnott of Kent to her sister Prudence in Aberdeen (this letter is also on display in the Museum of Quidditch). According to Madam Rabnott, Bragge brought a caged Snidget to the match and told the assembled players that he would award one hundred and fifty Galleons to the player who caught it during the course of the game. Madam Rabnott explains what happened next:
The players rose as one into the air, ignoring the Quaffle and dodging the Blooders. Both Keepers abandoned the goal baskets and joined the hunt. The poor little Snidget shot up and down the pitch seeking a means of escape, but the wizards in the crowd forced it back with Repelling Spells. Well, Pru, you know how I am about Snidget-hunting and what I get when my temoer goes. I ran on to the pitch and screamed “Chief Bragge, this is not sport! Let the Snidget go free and let us watch the nobel game of Cuaditch which we hall all come to see!” If you’ll believe me, Pru, all the brute did was laugh and throw the empty birdcage at me. Well, I saw red, I really did, I did a Summoning Charm, You know how good my Summoning Charms are. Pru- of course it was easier for me to aim properly, not being mounted on a broomstick at the time. The little bird come zooming into my hand. I stuffed it down the front of my robes and ran like fury.
Well, they caught me, but not before I’d got out of the crowds and released the Snidget. Chief Bragge was very angry and for a moment I thought I’d end up a horned toad, or worse, but luckily his advisers calmed him down and I was only fined ten Galleons for disrupting the game. Of course I’ve never had ten Galleons in my life, so that’s the old home gonel
I’ll be coming to live with you shortly, luckily they didn’t take the Hippogriff. And I’ll tell you this, Pru, Chief Bragge would have lost my vote if I’d had one.
Your loving sister, Modesty.
Madam Rabnott’s brave action might have saved one Snidget, but she could not save them all. Chief Bragge’s idea had forever changed the nature of Quidditch. Golden Snidgets were soon being released during all Quidditch games, one player on each team (the Hunter) having the sole task of catching it. When the bird was killed, the game was over and the Hunter’s team was awarded an extra one hundred and fifty points, in memory of the one hundred and fifty Galleons promised by Chief Bragge. The crowd undertook to keep the Snidget on the pitch by using the Repelling Spells mentioned by Madam Rabnott.
By the middle of the following century, however, Golden Snidget numbers had fallen so low that the Wizards’ Council, now headed by the considerably more enlightened Elfrida Clagg, made the Golden Snidget a protected species, outlawing both its killing and its use in Quidditch games. The Modesty Rabnott Snidget Reservation was founded in Somerset and a substitute for the bird was frantically sought to enable the game of Quidditch to proceed.
The invention of the Golden Snitch is credited to the wizard Bowman Wright of Godric’s Hollow. While Quidditch teams all over the country tried to find bird substitutes for the Snidget, Wright, who was a skilled metal-charmer, set himself to the task of creating a ball that mimicked the behaviour and flight patterns of the Snidget. That he succeeded perfectly is clear from the many rolls of parchment he left behind him on his death (now in the possession of a private collector), listing the orders that he had received from all over the country. The Golden Snitch, as Bowman called his invention, was a walnut-sized ball exactly the weight of a Snidget. Its silvery wings had rotational joints like the Snidget’s, enabling it to change direction with the lightning speed and precision of its living model. Unlike the Snidget, however, the Snitch had been bewitched to remain within the boundaries of the field. The introduction of the Golden Snitch may be said to have finished the process begun three hundred years before on Queerditch Marsh. Quidditch had been truly born.

The news that Celtic scouts have watched Lawrence Shankland has to be the least surprising revelation in the history of Scottish football.
Why wouldn’t we watch a player who has 25 goals in 26 goals in the second tier this season?
It just makes good sense.
But let’s not mistake this for anything it’s not.
I very much doubt that Celtic has any real interest in signing Shankland. We send our scouts to watch him just in case there’s a not to be missed footballer here, but watching him against Hibs that’s not what they would have seen at all. No wonder reports today suggest we “cooled our interest.”
Our “interest” was the rational one; if there’s an unpolished gem on our own doorstep we don’t want to miss out on it.
That’s the reality.
The media, with its need to blow things out of proportion in order to get headlines, chooses to interpret that as Celtic “preparing a bid”, and there is, of course, an interest in trying to turn it into an “Old Firm” transfer tug of war … but all untrue.
Our team has to be built around a core group of Scottish players.
That’s a UEFA requirement as much as anything else, and so there’s no way we’d not go and watch a player like Shankland.
But as I said in a previous piece – the one on Morgan – there is a mighty jump from being a Scottish Championship player and an SPL footballer … a bigger gap than some think.
Shankland scored yesterday, of course, but his performance was pretty poor overall. I have little doubt that Celtic’s scouts would have taken a simple message back to the club “Not good enough to get into the squad” and really that’s the bottom line.
I’ve said it before; if we were going to sign a player from Scotland right now – and especially a striker – it would be Cosgrove at Aberdeen; he isn’t Scottish but he’s scored nearly as many goals as Morelos without a fraction of the hype. He’s a better option than taking the punt on Shankland would be.
I’m definitely not saying that Shankland is a bad footballer, but I have yet to see any evidence that he’s better than average.
He has recenty won his first caps for Scotland … and even scored. This is all the more reason for keeping an eye on him … but it doesn’t mean that anything more will come of it than that.
If he was coming in, who’d be going out?
Would you take him over Griffiths or Edouard?
Would you see him as an adequate replacement for either?
Of course you wouldn’t.
The issue doesn’t arise, because we’re not looking at him seriously with any intent to buy him … we’re simply making sure we aren’t missing something special.
Think you know our Polish players? Take the quiz below or by clicking on this link to find out …

Investors worried PM Modi may sacrifice fiscal prudence ahead of 2019 polls.
The rupee is the worst performing currency in Asia this year, flirting with an all-time low on worries that India is headed for problems as rising oil prices rewrite the once-shining fundamentals of Asia’s third-largest economy.
India had been in a sweet spot since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. Its economic expansion is outpacing even China’s, inflation is in check, its budget deficit seemed to be shrinking and its popular prime minister had looked unbeatable. It’s now the world’s fastest-growing large economy. But since January, it has seen its currency underperform against almost all others. Only those of Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Turkey have done worse.
While most currencies have fallen against the dollar since the start of the year over a strong U.S. economy and rising U.S. Treasury yields, the rupee has given up 6%. It is now trading dangerously close to its February 2016 low of 68.90, and some economists see it sliding to 70 this year.
India is particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in oil prices, shipping in 80% of its energy needs due to demand that far outpaces domestic production. Oil is at around $75 a barrel now, compared with $63 six months ago.
The increased price of oil imports will likely push up inflation in India as the costs of products and services rise and widen the current account and budget deficits.
“As one of the largest importers of oil, the Indian economy is one of the most exposed to this particular shock, so it is not surprising to see some underperformance,” said Kenneth Akintewe, head of Asian sovereign debt at Aberdeen Asset Management Asia Ltd.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch estimates that every $10 increase in oil prices hurts Indian consumption by 0.6% of GDP, threatening to hold back India’s pace of expansion.
India runs a current account deficit, meaning that the value of its imports of goods and services exceeds that of its exports. The deficit could move beyond the 2% of GDP expected for the year that ended March 31, to up to 3% this financial year, Nomura estimates.
India has in the past been cushioned from oil-price rises by strong foreign portfolio investments. And the latest business news will be updating soon.
But during an emerging market selloff, foreign investors have this year pulled $4.4 billion from India, including $2.8 billion in May alone. That outflow comes despite central bank efforts to increase corporate bond investment limits and relaxing government bond ownership rules for foreigners.
”You’ve got emerging markets selling off, you’ve got the dollar strength and oil factors which make India and the Indian rupee an easy target,” said Andrew Gillan, head of Asia ex Japan equities at Singapore-based Henderson Global Investors.
Domestic politics aren’t helping. A year ago, analysts saw a 2019 general election win for Mr. Modi as almost certain, but a series of shaky state polls have made that appear less likely. His party this month failed to win enough seats to control the southern state of Karnataka, a local election seen as a bellwether for its success next year.
“The election is still some time away,” said Dhiraj Bajaj, fund manager and head of Asia fixed income at Lombard Odier. “The market knows it’s a long time away and it’s really starting to get nervous.”
Mr. Modi will need to convince voters that last year’s chaotic introduction of a goods and services tax—and his 2016 move to cancel 86% of the currency in circulation—were worth it.

It’s amazing how the view from across the city differs from the one we see in the real world, isn’t it? Once again, some of the Ibrox fan sites are buzzing with speculation over Celtic’s transfer window, and puzzling over what it is we were doing in it.
To me, our policies are fairly straightforward. We’ve brought in the Americans as future prospects, Shved to be a first player next season and the four other signings to get us over the line in this campaign. There’s nothing to it, it’s easy to understand.
I have looked at their signings with a clear head. It is obvious that they are going for broke, perhaps even literally. They think they can win the title this year and are throwing what they can afford at it. Unfortunately for them, we were easily able to spend more.
Whatever my complaints might be about things not done, at even a conservative estimate we spent upwards of £5 million in January, between transfer and loan fees. They couldn’t spend anywhere near that, and doubtless it infuriates them.
All the hype around the Defoe signing fails to hide the truth that we were able to go out and bring in better quality.
I don’t expect their fans to face up to that, or to the implications of it, but I do sometimes hope for a reasonable examination from their side. Instead, it’s nonsense.
To some of them the loanees are a puzzle because they expected us to spend more.
I expected us to spend more than we did, especially on the defence, but when you look around European football in this window all we’ve done is stuck with the prevailing trend. Nearly every EPL club brought in players on loan, some of them more than we did.
Of course, they don’t interpret this the way our board would defend it; as prudence. Instead we are hoarding money for the “settlement of court cases” – we know which ones they mean – or some other impending collapse which exists only in their imaginations.
Yet this loathsome fantasy seems reasonably sane compared to their view on the players we’ve loaned out.
In their view – freely expressed on their forums – we are breaching some sort of unwritten rule of fair play, first by accumulating young players who we can either develop ourselves or sell on at a profit later and secondly by loaning out footballers to other teams in the SPL.
To them this is proof that we are engaged in a nefarious scheme.
First we weaken our rivals by signing their best players. Then we loan those players back to other clubs who can’t use them against us, thus weakening the teams around us even more. “If we did it then there would be sporting integrity headlines in the tabloids,” one forum member wrote.
What nonsense this is, what absolute lunacy to believe in it.
The holes in the rotting structure of this bizarre theory barely need pointing out.
Take Mulumbu; now, first we didn’t sign him from Kilmarnock only to loan him back.
We acquired him when he’d been sitting about doing nothing for over a month after his contract there expired. And in loaning him back to Kilmarnock it might well be true that he cannot play against us, but he could put in performances that might enable them to stay hot on our trail.
Aberdeen stayed competitive last season in no small part due to the performances of Ryan Christie.
But you can’t deal in logic when it comes to these people.
You can’t point out that this is a bizarre and somewhat counterproductive way to nobble the opposition.
Everything we do is unsportsmanlike to this lot.
Spend money and we’re trying to buy the title. Bring in players on loan and we’re exploiting the loan system. Sign young kids and we’re wasting their careers on not playing them. Send them out to learn their trade elsewhere and we’re trying to do over the other clubs. Even sending Morgan out to Sunderland is part of some grand evil scheme, as if we’re fattening him up for the market instead of preparing him for our first team.
Can you imagine what they’ve have wrote had we signed Defoe?
Pretty much the same as I wrote when Bournemouth announced he was leaving them on a free and I said it was the kind of signing we should avoid like the plague.
It is amazing to me that they spend so long scrutinising us for signs of impending collapse, and all the wall their own foundations are a crumbling mess, their own wage bill an unsustainable weight around them, threatening their future.
Celtic tries to find a balance between enhancing the team in the here and now and building for the future. We always have one eye on the future. I may not agree with the strategy at times, but it’s not difficult to understand what lies at its heart. It keeps us strong and healthy. It keeps the wolf far away from the door. It is prudent. It is sensible.
And yes, it’s risk averse, but a little of that kind of thinking might have saved the last club to play out of their stadium. Ours will never be put in that kind of peril.

Following Celtic’s 4-0 demolition of Inverness last night Celtic have won 22 successive league games and as usual the SMSM and fans of other clubs are throwing their tuppence worth in about the competitiveness of the Scottish game.
And our leader, Brendan Rodgers must be giving up giving damns for Lent because not a single one has been given by the boss recently.
Like you and I, he’s not overly concerned by what others think; all he’s concerned with is that the Green Machine is going like a dream and there’s no sign of them letting of any steam. What a team.

Rodgers concerns himself with Celtic and Celtic only.
He’s paid around £2m per annum and is worth every cent. He’s not here to bring Scottish football up to the level that Celtic is attaining.
Other clubs are responsible for that, for the standards of their own football, for the state of the co-efficient, for what has gone wrong.
The others are falling flat on their faces in a bid to finish second. It’s like Aberdeen, Hearts and Sevco are inebriated and trying to pogo-stick their way to the coveted and now much lauded second spot. They are falling over themselves in the process.
My money is on Aberdeen incidentally with Sevco getting bronze and Hearts, well…who knows?
Let’s get this straight. Rodgers has a vision and it’s not just to win the league or even the treble. Going unbeaten all season? Well, that would be the cherry on the cake but Brendan’s real focus is on the longer term.
He wants Celtic to carry the flag for Scottish football in Europe.
After the caning of ICT he said when asked about Celtic’s dominance and how it’s affecting the Scottish game:
“I’m not really worried, to be honest. Some people will say you need more competition to do better in Europe. I don’t necessarily agree. We work hard, you can only beat the opponent in front of you. We’re developing our game, that’s the most important thing.”
He constantly cites development in interviews and it’s about bringing Celtic once again to the fore in Europe. In some ways our Champions League exploits were disappointing but overall there were glimmers of hope and it was early in a momentous season.
Brendan wants to be up there with Stein and O’Neill in terms of Europe. If he can get to the Champions League next season and qualify out of the groups then that’s a step further than this year.
Should the team keep improving then it’s achievable.
Celtic fans are under no illusions that it’s going to be difficult but given added cash and players then we’ve a fighting chance.
If not, a run in the Europa may suffice for him. Maybe.
When questioned after last night’s win he drew on this saying:
“I know what level the guys are playing at. We demonstrated that against Manchester City – we were the first team to stop them winning. Us, from little Scotland were the only team they didn’t beat in the Champions League. So the league might not be that prestigious. But we’re playing at a really high level. They’ve got tremendous appetite.  A phenomenal performance from the start of the season. But we’re never satisfied. We keep looking to improve.”
Celtic continually turn the screw on opponents in Scotland. In the first half last night I thought they looked sluggish up until Sinclair’s wonder strike but again they showed what a force they are.
Indubitably, last night’s game was certainly a marker for the Hoops.
Inverness were of course the last team to salvage any points from Celtic – over 6 months ago – and the media were desperate for the same result. It’s oozing out of them.
They’re bored of Celtic’s streak but let me tell you frankly – I’m not. Any Celtic fans that utters these words should be made to do the Paradise Windfall in the scud.
Rodgers said previously that the team would improve after this performance. They have, enormously.
Whether the SMSM want to pick the bones out of the Scottish game that’s up to them – the fans are free to criticise too. They bemoan the money Celtic has which is fair enough. Celtic got to where they are because of years of prudence and wise spending.
Let people complain as they like. But was should never fault any Club with genuine ambition and since the introduction of Brendan and his team ours as fans has grown.
Brendan Rodgers is here to take Celtic to the next level and like him I’m giving giving damns up for Lent.

I’ve read some articles in the MSM since the turn of the year calling into question Dave King and his stewardship at Ibrox. The underlying reason of course is the enormous points gap that has opened up between Celtic and King’s charges.
It currently sits at 19 points with the Hoops also having a game in hand.
Some comparisons to the gap between Celtic and Rangers in the 1990’s are also to be expected.

There is a major difference between then and now though.
As perilously close as Celtic came to it, they did not go through the indignity of an administration and liquidation event. Fergus McCann came to Celtic’s rescue just in time and proceeded to lay out a clear and concise 5 year road map to restoring Celtic back to former glories.
This began with the task of re-homing the club at the national stadium for a season while Celtic Park underwent significant renovation and a continued with a gradual increase in the budget allocated to the first team squad , culminating in preventing 10 in a row and securing the 1997-1998 League Championship.
McCann delivered.
His was not a plan of hubris and big talk.
He resisted pressure put on him by both supporters and other board members alike to focus solely on squad investment and to get involved in an arms race with his opposite number David Murray. He made no mention of potential sums required to rebuild the club but simply promised what was required would be done.
As Rangers threw money at it in the following season to get back on top, he remained both stoic and deliberate in his resolve that Celtic would not live beyond their means. Meanwhile in Govan, David Murray appeared to lose all perspective. Former Dutch national coach Dick Advocaat was appointed and furnished with a budget which would have been ample for an assault on any of the major leagues in Europe never mind the top flight in Scotland.
Murray, of course, was no stranger to writing cheques to secure success. Rangers 9 in a row years had been built on such an approach. As one European campaign after another floundered to the point of embarrassment save one (92-93′), the Premier League title was wrapped up season on season with little resistance until McCann’s arrival and the appointment of Tommy Burns.
Though Tommy reintroduced an exiting brand of free flowing and swash buckling football underpinned by some exciting forward signings (namely the ‘Three Amigo’s’ of Van Hooijdonk, Di Canio and Cadete as Fergus labelled them due to their unscrupulous attitudes to honouring their contracts), our defensive naivete’s regularly let us down especially in Old Firm encounters and ultimately we fell short.
A more reserved and some might say practical approach was deployed by his successor Wim Jansen, who also benefited from an ailing Rangers team in comparison to previous years, and the light blues seemingly relentless march to ten was stopped.
When Rangers wrapped up the treble in 1998-1999, their support support believed that balance had been restored. They were back on top and where they should be. Things would be back to normal and regular season on season domination would once again be par for the course. In Advocaat they had a manager with genuine continental pedigree who would take them not only into the Champion’s League but to the summit of European football itself.
Little did they know that in fact the die had been cast on a self-destructive plan unwittingly activated by Murray, who by this point had gone way beyond hubris and bravado to constructing the concept of Moonbeams.
Both he and the press alike believed the sun shone out of his arse.
He had access to huge borrowing facilities via his friends in the banking circles of Edinburgh; their entire “competitive advantage” was built on this unsustainable foundation. The rest as they say is history. Rangers grip on Scottish football gradually weakened under the persistent pressure of both Celtic on the field combined with improved governance of overdraft facilities amongst their chief borrowers off it.
Then Murray bailed along with Walter in expectation of the ground zero even that was about to unfold and well, you know the rest.
Whilst McCann literally came over the hill at the 11th hour, having been beavering away feverishly in the preceding weeks formulating an SOS plan, Dave King rolled into the Blue Room long after the bomb had dropped and the dust settled. His was not so much a plan to save his boyhood heroes as it was to feed on the lumbering Frankenstein’s Monster that emerged as Sevco.
Rather than taking any lessons from what had unfolded in the previous quarter of a century at Ibrox, he decided to employ the same hubris tactics of the old owner and his former friend David Murray.
Grandiose numbers ranging from £50 million to £30 million, depending on the news outlet, started whirling around at press conferences. His sidekicks Paul Murray and John Gilligan looked on nervously, even occasionally trying to reel all the big talk of ‘over-investment’ in.
King was running the show though.
The other two were just underlings, there to wear the club ties and relate to the fans.
The fact they actually lived in the country and would attend games also helped.
King has got Sevco to the top flight and even dispatched Celtic in a Scottish Cup semi-final along the way, giving the masses a taste of glory, if only for a fleeting moment. They sit second in the league and on the face of it, it’s not all bad. But the reality is that his talk of huge sums being invested still remains that. Talk.
He hasn’t been able to furnish Mark Warburton with the promised huge sums because he can’t. The club are getting by on season ticket money and soft loans. Sport’s direct also haven’t gone anywhere. They remain onerously tied around their neck with their grip seemingly tightening every time the board denounce them.
Whilst McCann made stadium renovation the first order of business, King has put it on the back burner. Fergus turned a share issue into a money spinner picked up by ordinary fans. Meanwhile Dave can’t even get his proposed share issue off the ground. Fergus McCann stuck to a policy of fiscal prudence and never wilted on it. Dave King promised ten of millions in squad investment and has instead delivered loanees, has been’s and unknowns for a modicum of the cash the fans expected.
Of course Fergus McCann rode into the distance after 5 years as promised.
He came, he saw, he rebuilt the stadium and laid the foundations for future success.
Into the bargain he made millions but then he always said he would. His plan was totally transparent. Dave King is now nearly two years into his grand plan. He set no limits on how long it would take. The plan seems to be as you were. Lather, rinse and repeat. The buzz words are ‘European revenues’.
These will apparently secure a road back to financial stability and ultimately on field success.
The finer points of how exactly have not been explored never mind explained.
I’ve never previously heard anyone at Celtic or Aberdeen for example waxing lyrical about the significant financial rewards of a Europa League run. The end of season financial results of both clubs would appear to underline that. There simply is none.
In the final analysis any comparison’s between then and now are merely superficial.
Paul Cassiday is a Fergus McCann fan who thinks comparisons with King are an insult to the Canadian genius who saved us and put us on the road to dominance.
