What’s up, Clue Crew? I am here to educate you about those wacky cards Richard Topham uses, in Secret of the Old Clock! They are Zener cards, so named for their creator, perceptual psychologist, Karl Zener.
Karl Edward Zener (April 22, 1903 – September 27, 1964) was a perceptual psychologist best known for his affiliation with Dr. J. B. Rhine and their work in the field of extra-sensory perception (ESP).
(Dr. J.B. Rhine was a botanist who founded parapsychology). Zener designed the cards, in the early 1930s.
The Zener cards are a deck of 25 cards, five of each symbol. The five symbols are: a hollow circle, a plus sign, three vertical wavy lines, a hollow square, and a hollow five-pointed star.
In a test for ESP, the experimenter picks up a card in a shuffled pack, observes the symbol, and records the answer of the person being tested, who would guess which of the five designs is on the card. The experimenter continues until all the cards in the pack are tested…
Poor shuffling methods can make the order of cards in the deck easier to predict and the cards could have been inadvertently or intentionally marked and manipulated. In his experiments, J. B. Rhine first shuffled the cards by hand but later decided to use a machine for shuffling.

Here are some stats, in Zener cards success rates:
Most people (79%) will get between 3 and 7 correct (probability is a more precise calculation).
The probability of guessing 8 or more correctly is 10.9% (in a group of 25, you can expect several scores, in this range, by chance).
The chances of getting 15 correct is about 1 in 90,000.
Guessing 20 out of 25 has a probability of about 1 in 5 billion.
Guessing all 25 correct has a chance of about 1 in 300 quadrillion.
I really appreciate HER featuring this contemporary fad in their game (even if it’s super annoying to beat). The Zener cards really add to the richness of the historical aspect of CLK. That is all. Happy scrolling.

Excerpt from My Psychic Friend
Q:Does being a psychic mean that you are better at handling situations?
Oh lord, I wish. No sadly it does not. Look, psychics are people just like everyone else. We are not magical creatures that live outside the laws of the universe. I believe that I have benefited from the experience of working with others and seeing the struggles that they go through. So I have benefited from the experiences of others and know now how to better handle some situations. It isn’t like I have a problem and I plug my brain into the matrix and tada I have a solution.
God, The Universe, whatever you believe in, truly does work in mysterious ways. Over and over again I encounter circumstances which I seem to be presently dealing with in my own life through the perspective of clients. Some days by the fourth or fifth call I answer the phone and say, “wait, don’t tell me, your problem is XYZ.” Clients are like oh my god how did you know? Because every single person has had the same issue today and I am experiencing it too. I’m not sure if this is because of some craziness happening in astrology or because God is pointing at me saying TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE YOU FOOL!
Never the less I do find myself cringing when I tell a client that this is the way to handle this situation and I have failed to do just that in my own situation. I then have to log out, take a deep breath and go apologize to someone for not handling it the right way. So I always tell clients its really more “Do as I say, not as I do.” Which is a joke of course, but never the less I try to grow as a person every day in every interaction that I have with others and better myself while helping others. In the course of helping others I see the error in my own ways and try to make changes to those errors moving forward.
Being psychic doesn’t make me any better than anyone else. Just like being more learned doesn’t make teachers better than others. While I may have practiced and studied this ability, I believe that anyone with sufficient desire and dedication could join me or even surpass me in my level of knowledge and understanding. I encourage everyone who is interested to join me in this endeavor. We can only benefit in learning from each other.
