Not Great: I've had to pause my fic writing again while my brain squirks out how to transition from Jim and Archie to Roach's turn with Izzy (and all the slightly awkward but normal human shuffling about in and out of the shop that'll need to occur for that to happen)
Good: This means I'm finally tackling the gifs I've been sitting on for another Prince gifset and I might get that done tonight

top five original movie scores?
ok confession time i am so so bad at noticing movie music however despite that i've attempted to put together this list:
5. disco elysium: now you may say viktor. disco elysium is a video game which is a different thing from a movie. well maybe movies should try playing the same horns over and over obnoxiously until i'm pavloved into having an emotional reaction whenever i hear them
4. psycho: they weren't lying about those strings
3. the terror: is another thing that's not a movie. however i'm pretty sure this is the only score i've ever listened to separate from the media it's attached to so it deserves a mention i think
2. ravenous: banjo chase music! i couldn't even tell you if this is supposed to be a joke or if i mean it
1. purple rain: now i recognize this answer could be considered something of a cop-out. however counterpoint name a better movie soundtrack than purple rain

Prince's 'Purple Rain' to be made into a stage play
Almost 40 years after it was first featured, Purple Rain the film starring Prince is being adapted into a stage play. The 1984 film saw Prince – The Kid, as a growing rock musician with anger issues, trying to escape his troublesome homelife, navigate a relationship and the club scene of Minneapolis. The soundtrack of the same name was a huge hit for Prince, with tracks, ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘I…

also something totally random: purple staircase
when she landed her dream job, lexa moved to this townhouse sight unseen. she didn't have time to travel to this city just to find an apartment, and it looked good enough in the pictures. in the past few months, she had grown to love her little home, but one thing still puzzles her: her upstairs neighbor.
getting inside the building, there's a small foyer where a mix of her own umbrellas and rain boots and her neighbor's — hers, somber black; her neighbors, a rainbow umbrella and bright yellow rain boots — live, along with parcels, forgotten grocery bags and once, even a cat toy. lexa has to take a right to get into her apartment, a spacious one bedroom with a bay window and an old fireplace. but her mind often goes up those stairs
they've never crossed paths. and it's been way too long for lexa to go introduce herself. but still, she wonders who those belong to, who's the woman who sings along to the mamma mia soundtrack at least once a month while making pancakes on sunday mornings, whose heels sound on her ceiling every saturday night
lexa goes out of town for a week long conference. when she comes back, the staircase is painted a soft shade of purple. not only that, but there are wild flowers painted on each riser.
she tries to shrug it off and get inside her apartment to shower the flight away. that staircase isn't part of her apartment, she doesn't care what color it is
except she doesn't last the hour before walking up them and knocking on her neighbor's door
send me a made-up fic title and i'll tell you what i would write to go with it

Ok it's like past 1:30 am for me but this realisation hit me like a brick and I NEEDED TO POST ABOUT THISS-
Worldless spoilers under the cut
🔶️🔵
Ok ok- if anyone has listened to the soundtrack of the game externally they might find it easier to notice this, but basically the official soudtrack has 2 tracks that sound very close: melancholic undergo I and melancholic undergo II
When do these play? Well in my favourite map: that lush purple rainy garden!!
What's determines which of the 2 tracks play? Well depends on if it's Edda or Aven!!! When Edda enters for the first time it's the first:
A. HARMONIOUS. OVERLAP. OF. BOTH. TRACKS.
Tumblr media
...and when Edda gets yoinked by the rain and player swaps to Aven it's the second:
Tumblr media
But.. BUT.. what about when they actually join as counterparts? What plays?
Listen for yourself:

JODHAA AKBAR + soundtrack
(requested by anonymous) [insp]
[Image ID: five colorful gifs of Jodhaa Akbar, made for each song on the soundtrack. There is a small, black-and-white central gif with a circular soundwave in the middle. The background gif is fully colored. The cursive text on top is a couplet from the song, and the block text at the bottom of the gif is the name of the song:
GIF 1: Central gif is Jodhaa pressing her hands together in prayer in front of her deity's statue. The background gif is colored red, and is an overhead shot of her laying on her outstretched arm in front of the statue, a bottle of poison in one hand. The text at the top reads, "Tum bin paun kaise chain, tarsu tumhi ko din rain." and the song title reads, "Mann Mohanaa."
GIF 2: Central gif is Akbar pausing as he hears of Jodhaa's entrance into his palace. The background gif is colored orange and is of all the dancers spinning as they sing. The text at the top reads, "Tera mazhab hai jo mohabbat, kitne dilon par teri hukumat" and the song title reads, "Azeem-o-shan Shahenshah."
GIF 3: Central gif is Jodhaa praying to her god with her head slightly bowed above her folded hands. In profile, Akbar watches her fondly. The background gif is colored green, and is of Jodhaa and Akbar walking together through the palace. The text at the top reads, "Milke bhi hum milte nahi, khilke bhi gul khilte nahi." and the song title reads, "Jashn-e-Bahara"
GIF 4: Central gif is an overhead shot of Akbar spinning slowly with the rest of the dancers. The background gif is colored blue, and is of the saints who have come to sing a prayer during Jodhaa and Akbar's wedding. The text at the top reads, "Hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daaman hai thaama" and the song title reads, "Khwaja Mere Khwaja."
GIF 5: Central gif is Akbar wrapping his arms around Jodhaa from behind. The background gif is colored purple, and is a shot of their outstretched hands moving to clasp the other's. The text at the top reads, "Mile dekho aise hai hum, ke do sur ho jaise madham" and the song title reads, "Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein."

Movies I watched in March 2024
Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** I'm Not There (2007)*** Jingle All the Way (1996)* Three Graves to Cairo (1943)** Hitchcock (2012) ** Silent Partner (1978)** Possession (2002)** Oppenheimer (2023)** Oscar Wilde (1960)** Turning Point: The Cold War and the Bomb (2024)** Anselm (2023)*** 24 Hour Party People (2002)** Two of Us (1999)*** Remains of the Day (1993)*** Doubt (2008)*** Dune (1984)*** Dune Part II (2024)***
Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** Absolute bobbins of a script is still beautiful to look at, very gay and of course mainly a vehicle for Prince's music. Under the Cherry Moon was the follow up to Purple Rain. It was a box office flop, a critical failure that earned Razzie nominations, but is a worth another look. Prince and Jerome Beton are sex workers with a rich female clientele on the French Riviera, the kind of career that only exists in movies. Kristin Scott Thomas makes her film debut as the debutante who comes between the friends and threatens to part them. Prince's death scene, harkens back to Camille with Prince playing Garbo. Like Garbo, Prince was happy to exploit his own androgyny and like Garbo, he was doomed to only explore that in a way that could be squeezed into heteronormative films.
I'm not There: (2007)*** A fascinating look at Bob Dylan, dividing him into six personae played by six different actors. Haynes uses different film styles, the Cate Blanchett mid Sixties Dylan of Bringing it All Back Home and Blonde on Blonde is matched in style with the black and white cinematography of D.A. Pennebaker's Don't Look Back. It also has elements of the Italian Surrealists like Felinni or Antonioni with a scoch of A Hard Day's Night. The soundtrack is particularly good, avoiding for the most part, the licensing pitfalls that plagued Haynes' Bowie biopic, Velvet Goldmine. Some of the most effective moments of I'm Not There, pair landscape shots with Dylan's music. Given the catalogue and the array of talent, Haynes has gathered, one perhaps expects a bit more , but then that has always been Dylan's nature, he's mysterious and aloof, leaving us wanting more.
Jingle All the Way (1996)* We watched this Christmas movie in March because we recently learned that part of it was filmed at my son's elementary school. It had Jake Lloyd somehow being more annoying than he was in the Phantom Menace as a bonus. Phil Hartman got dragged into this unfunny mess as well.
Three Graves to Cairo (1943)** Tense war time drama about a British officer who gets trapped behind the lines and ends up hiding out in a hotel working as a waiter for Field Marshall Rommel. Billy Wilder ratchets up the tension, his script giving all the best lines to Rommel, played by Erich Von Stroheim who really owns the film though Anne Baxter and Franchot Tone nominally "star."
Hitchcock (2012)** Hichcock's struggle to make Pyscho dramatized with fantasies where he hangs out with Ed Gein, while Alma Hitchcock gets involved in a Hitchcockian romance with a hack writer. Scarlett Johannson plays an almost deliberately obtuse Janet Leigh and James Darcy captures pre-Psycho Tony Perkins. It's a bit silly but I'll never turn down Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins in anything. This has a slight, arch feel to it, like many of Hitchcock's pictures, but lurking underneath are the ordinary hates and passions of a man who fears being left behind, at the height of his career. For his long-suffering wife's part, she too feels she's being replaced by the young actresses that Hitchcock is obsessed with at the moment. The conclusion is sweet enough for the Hayes office: husband and wife rediscover the magic of their working relationship, which was always the rock upon which their relationship was built.
The Silent Partner (1978)** With Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York in the cast, this should have been better. Decent heist plot that devolves into slasher film . Christopher Plummer takes on the dubious mantels of playing a villain in a piss-poor American action film and a cross-dressing murderer.
Possession (2002)** A rather thin adaptation of a great novel, A.S. Byatt's story of two modern academics who disover a previous hidden romance between two Victorian poets. The film lacks the poetry of the novel, which I think is necessary for the story to have its full impact, but the film is full of plenty of jabs at academia as well as burning passions. Gweneth Paltrow and Aaron Ecklund play the young couple, while Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle play the poet/lovers. Tom Hollander has a small but memorable part as does Toby Stephens.
Oppenheimer (2023)** My least favorite half of Barbenheimer still damn good and the physics nerd in me reveled in seeing my dead physicist boyfriends on screen. There are better films about Oppenheimer's life (BBC did a mini series starring Sam Waterston and it's on youtube) but something about the dreamy quality of Nolan's film captures that quantum mystery kinda vibe and put it in a blockbuster package. Cool.
Oscar Wilde (1960)** Preceded the landmark film Crisis by one year, without the world shaking honesty that film managed, around the topic of homosexuality and the law. Both films hinged on blackmail of a gay man but Oscar Wilde is careful to skirt around explicit mentions of sexuality, using tricks like showing the dictionary definition of "sodomy" briefly on camera. More was needed and more was achieved a year later. Ralph Richardson contributes to the courtroom scenes admirably and Morley is a terrific Wilde, who would rather make point for style than save himself from prison.
Turning Point: The Cold War and the Bomb (2024)** Fascinating background to our current situation, most of which is terrifying and now I'm worrying about the bomb again. I took off a star for the sheer number neo-con/Reaganite talking heads in this...
Anselm (2023)*** Wim Wenders stirring mostly visual documentary about Anselm Kiefer, a German artist who has explored his childhood memories of post war Germany in a frank and intimidatingly in your face way, on a massive scale combining sculpture, painting and physical spaces, many of which he has engineered himself. As a middle aged person who feels estranged and terrified to look more deeply into her own childhood, Anselm was something to sit with for two hours.
24 Hour Party People (2002)** Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson, the Manchester TV personality and club owner who helped launch the careers of Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays. Coogan has a tendency to make all his characters Alan Partridge and this is no exception, but it kind of works? It did more to get me to listen to Joy Division that numerous goth roommates ever could...
Two of Us (1999)*** I can't stop watching this made for VH-1 fanfiction of a movie starring Jared Harris and Aidan Quinn as John Lennon and Paul McCartney, dramatizing a probably apocryphal tale that John and Paul met up in NYC in the 70s when Paul was playing Madison Square Garden. Pure fluff and nonsense. I need it like air.
Remains of the Day (1993)*** Revisiting this old favorite and finding that it's kind of pacey and funny for a Merchant Ivory pic. The movie that made me love Tony Hopkins as an actor, his Stevens is really such a fascinating, ostensibly tragic character and yet there is a weird kind of triumph to living one's life so completely to a schedule and a code, and yet never being to eliminate desire and feeling.
Doubt (2008)*** This is the second Philip Seymour Hoffman movie I've watched in the last few months that has left me utterly haunted. Like The Master, Hoffman creates a villain who charms the audience at the same time you know that he's probably done unforgivable things and is only at the start of a long career of doing unforgivable things. Meryl Streep gives a heavy handed performance (Streep never met a colloquial accent that she didn't wear like a Groucho Marx nose) that certainly gets the point across that unpleasant people usually aren't the bad guys you want them to be. Amy Adams plays a naive young nun who, like the audience, is left wondering what to believe.
Dune (1984)*** Unapologetic Lynch Dune lover here. I love the cheesy acting, the wild tonal shifts, and the attempts to put this sprawling multibook epic in the Star Wars shaped box that the studio wanted him to use. My favorite scene has become Lynch's cameo, he seems so happy just pretending to be a spice miner, in his little spice mining suit in his little unconvincing space ship. I love him and this whole stupid mess. Sorry Frank Herbert.
Dune Part II (2024)*** My prediction is that Villeneuve's probable trilogy will--like so many franchises--peak in the second film. The first part was a slow-moving visual feast, that only hinted at the potential of this cast. Things actually start moving in the plot and Chalamet's Paul does his best to cope. Unlike MacLachlan's avuncular Atreides, who takes being a Messiah as just being another Tuesday of being the Universe's Most Gifted Child, he actually seems conflicted. Zendaya continues to utterly dominate every time she's on screen. Can Channi be the focus of the movie? Please?

Ao3 Masterlist:
Hello readers *in James May's voice* and welcome to the masterlist of the fics I wrote/ I am writing! There are playlists and song recommendations for each fic!
I hope this post will be understandable and not too ugly!
1. A Sunday Kind of Love series: an ongoing series of fics set in the Emilia Romagna countryside, tons of fluff. They can be read alone. playlist.
1.1 Hearts of Gold : 9.4k words, summer fic. playlist.
Plot: One late afternoon in August Charles sat on a very pretty round bale, eating a slice of watermelon, white sunscreen on his face, cursing himself for having stained his last clean white t-shirt. He was having an unexpectedly good summer break, for someone with his bad luck (his fiat panda was holding on for dear life under the sun, much like his Ferrari F1-75, so this might be a stretch). To be honest, being on holiday in the Emilian countryside shouldn't have been his first choice of vacation, but he needed something different, something unusual that could take his mind off of racing for a while. But he needed a distraction, not a way to forget, so he chose to stay close to Maranello, his second home, but just in another province.
And something different he found indeed, someone rather than something. Someone with blue eyes and the constant need of sunscreen.
1.2 Moka Pot Mondays : 4k words, blurbs and slice of life. soundtrack.
Plot: The Italian countryside is the setting, Summer break the time and Lestappen are our main characters.
1.3 Cosa Sarà? : 9.2k words, end of summer break AU. playlist.
Plot: Charles sat on the side of the dry canal, in the field opposite to that which held his first kiss with Max. He would have sat with the Dutch in front of their field, but a tractor harvested it one afternoon and now only pointy golden thorns populated that lonely field. It felt like a prelude to a new chapter. Life goes on, like that song says.
And so Charles turned around and watched the alfalfa field and smelled the little purple flowers from a distance, complicit with the wind. The Monegasque was a nostalgic and a romantic person, the Regency era would have loved him dearly, and that field contained all the shades of the memories he held dear during his holiday. From the green of his old bike to the different shades of purples that tinted the fresh fruits he ate, passing from the blue of his lover's eyes.
That little field was going to be embroidered in his heart, like the hand on the small of his back, or the mischievous grin on Max's lips.
1.4 September : 8.5k words, set during the September European triple header. playlist.
Plot: August came to an end, some say sipped away like a bottle of wine, and with it ended the summer break. The Formula 1 season got back on track, for the last European races. This however didn't stop Max from tightly planning confessions, weird coming out moments and some unfortunately needed therapy sessions.
Luckily for him Charles Leclerc, his stubborn Charles, had other plans, such as casual homoerotic times in hotel rooms surrounded by fans, getaway cars to eat sandwiches and sheepish heart-eyes.
And maybe, with a lot of food, support from their stupid friends and some ABBA songs, maybe the two idiots will be able to finally say those three little gigantic words.
1.5 you're as beautiful as my home : 8.1k words, the fall and winter vibes are finally here friends, playlist.
Plot: The 2022 F1 season ended and Charles couldn’t stand the loneliness of his flat without Max or the flights to Italy inside grey clouds bringing rain around. So he decided to keep himself busy, having fun in Max's plane, causing the Formula One world to wonder if he could be a queer icon during podcast interviews and buying a house in Italy.
Max is right there by his side, befriending old people, providing perfectly timed songs, unwanted opinions about paint colours and homemade French fries and cakes, mostly enjoying the colourful chaos of Charles’s mind, with his cheeks red from Daniel’s teasing.
Or a set of stupidly romantic episodes starting from the 2022 Japanese GP
1.6 I would never take my eyes off of yours : 25.2k words, the April break au, playlist.
Plot: Max doesn’t exactly love spring. Well, we should say he doesn’t like certain aspects of it, like the insane amount of pollen flowing around in the air, next to bees, flies and all the other insects that exchange the blond mop of his hair for a flower bush.
What he loves about spring, though, is the warm sun, the spotless blue sky, cut only by the white traces of planes, and trees in full bloom. He also loves when Charles drags him to countryside festivals and dinners, when he composes new things on the piano, when Charles fights him after suggesting he should bleach his hair and especially when he gets on his knees.
Max should really change his mind about spring...
2. Homeward Bound : 74.4k words, 12 chapters, completed, Magic/Urban Fantasy AU. each chapter has a playlist, c1, c2, c3, c4, c5, c6, c7, c8, c9, c10, c11, c12.
Plot: Max Verstappen liked many things, like playing the piano, jazz music, Star Wars (Mark Hamill, comrades, say no more), his new flat in New York City, Daniel's cuisine and Charles Leclerc, the cute ghost that flies in his living room. He didn't know if that made him a necrophile or something (Sebastian says it doesn't, it's just a confirmation of his being a bisexual disaster).
Max moved to New York to follow his dream of being a jazz pianist but he would have never imagined that such a transatlantic move would imply the discovery of a magical world he always lived in but always ignored. Or that he needed to fight people with an enchanted sword to stop the fucking Apocalypse and being able to date Charles, but yeah, another day in the New York City life.
3. The Sting series: what happens when top-tier Interpol detective Charles Leclerc and world-class thief Max Verstappen (or as he's known in the field: The Dutch Baron) cross paths?
3.1 You could hang it in the Louvre : 10k words, one shot, art theft AU. soundtrack + bonus.
Plot: Charles, a young Monegasque, is one of the top detectives for stolen artworks in the Interpol organisation and hates with a borderline homoerotic passion the Dutch Baron, an art thief who keeps on ruining his career plans.
Max, a young Dutch, is one of the most wanted thieves on the globe and Charles’s archnemesis. He’s kind of an idiot, hence the idiotic nickname he chose for himself after his first big heist, the Dutch Baron.
What happens when Max’s new and biggest heist goes let’s-say-not-exactly-well and Charles sees his face for the first time?
3.2 Late night devil, put your hands on me: art theft AU, 6 chapters, completed. soundtrack
"Do you want to know what is more incredible?" Max asks, staring at Charles' full and round pecs without any shame.
"What?" Charles asks, enjoying how Max's cheeks get redder and redder as he licks clean the fork.
"Stealing the Nine Pieces of Eight, with me," Max says and Charles drops his fork in the plate.
"The Nine pieces of eight? Isn't that like a legend? The owner of those artworks is unknown…" The Monegasque asks, furrowing his brows.
Max grins and rolls his eyes.
"I know a guy..." Max says, pulling Charles close by the elastic band of his boxers.
or: World-class thief Max Verstappen asks Interpol Detective Charles Leclerc out on a date (to put on the world's most complicated heist ever conceived) but things never go as planned.
4. Red, White & Orange-Nassau : 54.9k words, 9 chapters completed, Royalty AU.
Plot: Diplomatic accidents don’t necessarily happen because of political feuds, sometimes they happen because a certain rockstar can’t shut his mouth at a royal wedding and the Crown Prince feels the need to obliterate his idiotic face, with those gentle green eyes and that stupid dark eyeshadow he always wears.
Said European crisis, as the New York Times put it, is more likely to happen if those in the room fighting are Charles Leclerc, frontman of rock band Moonlight, and Dutch Prince Max Emilian van Orange-Nassau Verstappen, the two eternal mediatic rivals.
But what if the fight ruins the short streak of good press the Dutch Royal Family got, what if suddenly the Dutch public opinion stopped liking Max, what if Charles’s reputation starts cracking too and with it his chances to win a Grammy?
What if this leads to a fake public truce and an equally fake friendship? Could this be the start of something at court or just the beginning of the end?
5. Fast and loose (and all that jazz) : 2.2k words, one shot, older sugar daddy Max, young sugar baby Charles.
plot: Max comes home from work and Charles, his sugar baby/young boyfriend, has a surprise waiting for him, a surprise made of red lace and dirty talk.
6. When I kissed the teacher (under the mistletoe) : 23.2k words, one shot, kid fic, uni professor Max, young dilf Charles. playlist
plot: The Monegasque waits for a second before inhaling roughly and speaking.
"No, but I need two favours, actually, Professor," Charles says, keeping his head on the desk.
"Uhm, yeah?" Max asks, scratching his head.
"Could I call you Max just for my next question?" Charles asks.
"Uhm, a little unorthodox, but if it's relevant to your point, yes, you may, Charles," The Dutchman answers, his pitch raised just a bit.
Charles bangs his head against the desk once again, nearly cursing before speaking again.
"What I wanted, Jesus, sorry, what I wanted to ask you, Max, was if you'd like to go out, on a date, with me?" Charles asks and he doesn't dare look at Max to see his reaction.
7. If you'd have been there (if you'd have seen it) : 3k words, one shot, sugar daddy Max, sugar baby Charles. Christmas special!
plot: Max comes home after yet another problematic situation at work and Charles, his sugar baby/young boyfriend, has prepared a very kinky and tight Christmas gift for him.
8. Something to give each other : 6k words, two chapters, completed, lestappen rule 63, landoscar, friends to lovers. Valentine's special!
plot: "You know, you should just talk to her, Max, you’d be surprised how a conversation can solve things!” Oscar repeats for the fifteenth time that day. He’s chopping some tomatoes up for his famous tomato soup.
Max huffs on the couch, sadly hugging her stupidly big IKEA bear. They named it Carlos, just because Lando thought the IKEA employee at the register was called Carlos and was hot.
“That's rich, coming from you, Mr I pretend to be straight instead of telling Lando I'm bi because then I fear he'll friendzone me intentionally!” Max points out.
9. Evil under the blossoms : 11.6k words, one shot, lestappen, florist Max, detective Charles, fluff. playlist
plot: Max shows Charles the way to the plants lab.
"That's where I think the robbery happened. These are the shelves where I keep the single flowers, this morning the tansies spot was empty. That is the greenhouse, but there are no missing plants in it. Then the rest of the lab here is a mixture of trees and different plants, the bushes that disappeared were there. I track in the register everything I sell, and I never miss a day, I'm-
"A plant nerd?" Charles jokes with a teasing smile.
"A plant nerd, yeah..." Max answers blushing.
or
Max is a florist and one day flowers start disappearing for his shop. He calls Charles Leclerc, private investigator and childhood crush, to help him solve the case.
