Sc intro: Quasim Lakhdar, the adventurous captain
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Created with this picrew Name: Quasim (etym. from Arabic qāsim قَاسِم meaning the sharer or wasīm وَسِيم meaning charming) Lakdhar (etym. Algerian surname, meaning unknown) Gender: male Age: 46 Race: human Defining looks: red hair, green eyes, muscular built, sailor tattoos (squid, anchor, heart), loves to dress like a pirate of older times (wears an eye-patch even though his eye is still functioning), shark teeth jewelry Character: charming, adventurous, humorous, quick-witted, courageous, true to his word, huffy when someone breaks his trust, imaginative, tenacious, reckless Motto: “Set sails towards adventure! The sea is waiting to welcome us home.“ Backstory: Quasim Lakdhar is captain of a big merchant ship, sailing on the more dangerous routes others refuse to sail on. He and his crew make good money from transporting goods from outlying islands to the mainland and vice versa. One fateful time, he took a shortcut through siren territory. Every mariner knows that sirens overturn your ship and steal all the goods, leaving the crew to drown in the sea. Luckily, he made a deal with Kairi Kailani, the oldest siren sister, to return and bring more goods in exchange for safe crossing. Even though he is taking big risks, he cares a lot about every member of his crew and risks his life to save them in a storm. Sexuality: heterosexual Lover: He never stays in one place long enough to form a relationship with someone, and there are only men in his crew.

History of Situational Mutism
have made a post on this before, so have taken some parts of that. but this is more comprehensive. aka long post like looong⚠️
summary:
aphasia voluntaria -> elective mutism (voluntary, refusal, oppositional) -> DSM IV = inability (failure, rather than refusal, to speak).
differential diagnoses: DSM-III = developmental disorders -> IV and IV-TR = speech abnormalities and social anxiety disorder -> DSM-V = communication disorders, social anxiety and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.
2013 DSM-V changed it from Childhood disorder to anxiety disorder. it also removes reference to trauma as a possible cause.
DSM IV-TR said SM had slightly more females than males. DSM-V says SM has equal gender distribution.
People thought DSM-V would subsume SM into SAD, but it didn’t due to the uncertainty around the relationship between SM and SAD.
It has since been recognised unofficially as ‘situational’. but this is not enough because ‘mutism’ also ignores how SM can affect all communication.
“It was back in 1877 that a German physician called Adolph Kussmaul used the term ‘aphasia voluntaria’ to describe children who ‘refused’ to speak though they could speak normally. Kussmaul used the term after he reported three clinical cases with similar symptoms (Jainer, Quasim, & Davis, 2001). In 1934, a child psychologist from Switzerland called Mortis Tramer used the term ‘elective mutism’ for the first time to describe ‘a fascinating group of children, whose talking is confined to familiar situations’ (Kolvin, Trowell, Le Couteur, Baharaki, & Morgan, 1997). Going by both the terms, it can be seen that the understanding was of a voluntary act of refusing to speak, which would mean it was an oppositional behavior (Noelle, 2017).
The same understanding is reflected in the diagnostic criteria given by the earlier versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). The third editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III and DSM-III-R) explained elective mutism in terms of ‘refusal to speak’. This was changed in the fourth edition of DSM, where it was recognized as an inability to speak (Noelle, 2107). The diagnostic criteria given in DSM-III (APA, 1980) talks of ‘continuous refusal to speak in almost all social settings’, while the diagnostic criteria given in DSM-III-R (APA, 1987) updated it to ‘persistent refusal to speak in one or more social settings’. In contrast, after the publication of DSM-IV in 1994, the diagnostic criterion read ‘failure to speak in specific social situations’.
There are other differences between the elective mutism as described in the third editions (DSM-III and DSM-III-R) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals (APA, 1980, 1987) and the selective mutism as described in the subsequent editions, i.e., DSM-IV (APA, 1994), DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000) and DSM 5 (APA, 2013). Some instances would be the predisposing factors and differential diagnosis.
According to both the third editions of the DSM (APA, 1980; 1987), maternal overprotection, speech disorders, mental retardation and trauma were possible predisposing factors for the onset of selective mutism. These factors were, however, removed in the subsequent editions of the DSM (DSM-IV, DSM-IV-TR & DSM-5). Similarly, the third editions stated that the ‘refusal’ to speak could be differentially diagnosed as developmental disorders, while the later editions (DSM-IV & DSM-IV-TR) list speech abnormalities and social anxiety disorder as differential diagnosis for selective mutism. DSM-5 (APA, 2013) lists a differential diagnosis of communication disorders, social anxiety and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.” Source: ‘selective mutism - understanding and management’ by Charu Kriti 🌹🌹
in 2013 the DSM-5 moved SM from the childhood disorders category to the anxiety disorders category. The DSM-5 also drops the reference to trauma as a possible cause of SM, and indicates that SM has equal gender distribution, whereas the DSM-4-TR had indicated slightly more females than males.
People thought the DSM-5 would subsume SM into SAD, but this didn’t happen due to the uncertainty surrounding the relationship between the two disorders. (high comorbidity, some argue SM is an extreme version of SAD; some argue SAD causes SM; others argue vice versa).
people with SM have since recognised it as ‘situational mutism’ to avoid the misunderstanding that sm is ‘selective’ or a choice not to speak; and they consider it an inability to speak in certain situations (people, places, settings). but this name is still not enough in my opinion, because it still focuses on what is considered the biggest problem for OTHER people, rather than for the person. sm is not just mutism (inability to speak); it affects all forms of communication. source: ‘Selective mutism in adults: an exploratory study’ by Carl Sutton. pp 18-19
maybe a better name is communication anxiety disorder or something like that. but then again, it is still not fully accepted as an anxiety disorder; only in official definitions.

Hi! Since I've been listening to a lot of North African and middle eastern artists lately I thought about making a bunch of posts where I talk about musicians that I found interesting. Each post will be about a specific artist from a specific country. The first three posts though will focus on Lebanese musicians. Not sure if it'll interest you but I'd appreciate if you give these posts a read! :)
A trip through Arabic music, Part 1: Lebanon
ISSAAM HAJALI
Issaam started his career in a local progressive rock band named Rainbow Bridge. When the war broke out in Beirut in 1975, him and his friend Rogér Fakhr (another relevant lebanese musician) fled to Paris where they continued working on their music. His debut album "Mouasalt Ila Jacad El Ard" was published in 1977 and was based on the works of the revolutionary Palestinian poet Samih Al-Quasim.
One of Hajali's most popular songs can be translated to "I, The Conscience Of The Speaker" and it's about, of course, resistance. During his musical career Issaam would made his political alignment very clear (he considered himself an ultra-leftist) and strongly condemned the actions of the Israeli army against the palestinian refugees in Beirut at the time.
(my favourite song so far!)
However, he slowly abandoned his career to focus on his family and now owns a jewelry shop in the capital.

AYŞE, the 36 year-old HASEKI SULTAN has arrived from THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. The UNWAVERING resembles TUBA BÜYÜKÜSTÜN and is both +STRONG WILLED and –CALCULATED. They are a member of the HOUSE OF OSMAN and remind the poets of THE CRESCENT OF A NEW MOON, A LIONESS LYING IN WAIT, A FIGURE DANCING BEHIND FLOWING FABRICS. In the annals of history, they will be remembered in the year of 1319 as a PLAYER. One day they may rise to greatness, though greater men and women have surely failed.  (jess — she/her  — 27  — gmt)
Tumblr media
birth  name:  milica  (MILL-ITS-UH),  meaning  kind,  dear  or  sweet. date  of  birth:  14th  of  august, 1283  (zodiac  sign:  leo). place  of  birth:  glubočica,  the  kingdom  of  serbia. faith  at  birth:  serbian  orthodox  christian.
current  name:  ayşe  (EYE-SHU),  meaning  well  living  one. current  home:  the  harem  of  the  ottoman  imperial  palace,  edirne. current  title:  haseki  (HA-SE-KI)  sultan,  meaning  chief  consort. current  faith:  islam.
at the age of sixteen, ayşe’s home in serbia experienced a great deal of civil conflict and it was during the chaos that the young woman was taken from her home and later sold on to a land entirely unknown to her. ayşe cannot (or wishes to not) recall of how long she and the others were transported or awaiting their fates for, to her it felt like a life time, but it was her fate that truly did change once she found herself at the doors of the ottoman imperial harem.
ever the survivor, ayşe sought to play by the harem’s rules in a bid to one day free herself and return home but soon found that the way of life in which she now found herself suited her quite well. in time she spoke the ottoman tongue almost as well as her own, she found peace in her old god but with a new name and eventually found her place when she had been called upon to comfort the grieving sultan.
now, a mother and the closest thing that the empire has to a queen, ayşe recognises the role that she must play and the price that it puts on her head and yet she continues to do it all seemingly flawlessly. though her son and the sultan are her main priority, ayşe seeks to run the harem with a firm hand in order to maintain its graces and safety for the women inside, seeking to find the woman who might one day continue her work when young quasim takes his place on the throne.
during the gathering of the greats...
above all ayşe seeks to leave a lasting impression upon the great and noble stage in moscow, hoping to strengthen the reach of the ottoman empire through ALLIES and to show the world that the empire is as progressive and successful as ever.
after many years spent in the same company day in and day out ayşe seeks new COMPANIONS, perhaps to even unite with those she has corresponded with previously, and to advance her inner circle.
though her son is currently only young, ayşe knows that one day he will grow and need to have the right woman by his side in order to strengthen his claim upon the sultan’s throne. whilst in moscow the haseki is open to talks of a FUTURE MATCH FOR HER SON if the offer meets her wishes.
the thing ayşe is most prepared for during her time in moscow is CONFLICT, given the current political climate she expects to come across and to gain an ENEMY or two and she is quite ready to take them on.

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971): Review
Tumblr media
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is a revolutionary film that opened the doors for the many black films that followed. It is commonly known as the first blaxploitation film and very much invented the genre. This film is incredibly important because of the way black people are represented and the message the film delivers to black viewers. While this film paved the way for the blaxploitation movement and black cinema, it is also an incredibly controversial film. There is a lot of content that has been labeled as exploitative to the actors involved and to the black community as a whole. Despite its controversy and mixed reception, this film was incredibly successful at the box office.
This film can be considered Melvin Van Peebles' magnum opus as it is his most successful and recognized work. The story follows the protagonist, Sweetback, played by Van Peebles, and his wild journey as a sex worker and fugitive. The character of Sweetback can be considered a sort of antihero that represents the struggle of black Americans. Melvin Van Peebles served as the director, writer, producer, editor and actor of this film and put all the money he had into making it. He poured his heart and soul into making this film a reality and it shows. His vision for the film is executed well in about every aspect. It is well casted with an exciting and unconventional plot. There is a lot of action and striking imagery that will both shock and satiate viewers.
There is a lot of criticism surrounding many of the risqué scenes and the way characters are portrayed in the movie. The criticism is not unfounded as the film is definitely meant to be shocking, but it still carries an important message with the imagery presented. The opening scene in particular is a source of much of the controversy surrounding this film. A young Sweetback, played by Mario Van Peebles, is shown starting his sex work as a prepubescent boy. Mario, who was about thirteen at the time, is shown to be simulating sexual intercourse with a grown woman and transitions from a boy to man, both literally and figuratively. While the scene is not intended to be exploitative, it is easy to see why many people have an issue with it. This scene certainly pushes the boundaries of what is considered artistic freedom, but it can also be seen as a form of abuse. It is not totally clear that what the viewer is seeing can be considered sexual assault, which understandably makes many people uncomfortable. This scene is intended to be symbolic which is easy to miss the first time watching because of its shock value.
While the film has drawn a lot of positive and negative attention, there is no doubt that it had a tremendous impact on black cinema. It is a miracle that this film was produced and became so successful considering how close it was to becoming a complete failure. There were no other films like it at the time of release which is why it was so groundbreaking. This movie is certainly worth watching, although not everything you see should be taken at face value. This movie will easily turn people off that are uncomfortable with the shocking imagery, but that is just a small part of what the movie has to offer. The fact that this movie was officially endorsed by the Black Panthers says a lot about how important it is to black society.

Start of My LIFE
I don’t know where to start but I know when I will end this blog it will be one of the best blog posts in the world; because it will inspire billions. I’m Abul Quasim Mohammad aka KHALID. I’m well-known by Quasim at school. At first, I used to stay annoyed because I didn’t like this name at all. I wanted to be Mohammad Khalid. But my father gave me this name so I couldn’t deny it. Whatever my name is, I will establish this name. I always thought to think big like big goals etc. E.G when I’ll have at least 100 billion dollars. I am not saying that I’m working for it, I’m just building the foundation of being the best as like everyone does but some get success, and some end up being unsuccessful. Do you know why?? because they were not consistent and patient. I think I’m patient but not consistent. If I decide from my heart and soul to be the best, I know I can but I need to be consistent.

Incorrect quotes (tag game)
I need an excuse to post my favourite incorrect quotes from the incorrect quotes generator so I’m tagging my writer friends @aquadestinyswriting @the-down-upside-finch @charlies-storybook @basalamander-corner @betweenthetimeandsound @hippiewrites to give you the same excuse! (nsfw warning for some quotes in the *** line) Have fun reading these unhinged dialogues that my characters could say!
Enya: This bloodline ends with me.
Meara: That's the fanciest way I've ever heard someone say "I'm gay".
***
Enya: Talib, we tried things your way.
Talib: No, we didn't.
Enya: I did it in my head and it didn't work.
***
Talib: We’re having a moment, aren’t we?
Enya: If by 'a moment' you mean me not wanting to strangle you for the first time since we met, then I guess we are.
***
Meara: Can you cut me some slack, Enya? I’m sort of in love.
Enya: I’m sorry, but that’s really not my problem.
Meara: I’m in love with you.
Enya: *blushes* Oh. That brings me in the loop a little.
***
Enya: Look at me straight in the eyes and tell me the truth, Meara!
Meara: You can’t expect me to look into your eyes and be straight.
***
Talib: Go fuck yourself.
Hadwin, smugly: Sure, but only if you watch
***
Talib: Well, Hadwin and I finally did it!
**The rest of the squad:** *gasps, shocked expressions, etc.*
Talib: That's right... We kissed!
***
Meara: Mira spat in Neruda’s ear today when they were sitting on the couch together.
Kairi: ...What?! Why?!
Meara, shrugging: You tell me.
***
Kairi: How do Nerida and Mira usually get out of these messes?
Meara: They don't. They just make a bigger mess that cancels the first one out.
***
Saoirse: Okay, what does A stand for?
Enya: Arson.
Saoirse: Aw, you're so good. Okay! B! What does B stand for?
Enya: Barson.
Esmeralda: *laughter*
Saoirse: What stands for C?
Enya: Commit arson.
Esmeralda: Oooo.
Saoirse: D!
Enya: Don't come near me, I'm going to commit arson.
Esmeralda: *more laughter*
***
Meara: If you water water, it grows.
Kairi: ...What.
Quasim: They've got a point.
*** nsfw warning
Nerida: Hey, I’m getting in the shower. Wanna help me out?
Nalu: ...Have you never taken a shower before?
*** nsfw warning
Nerida: I feel like doing something stupid.
Nalu: I’m stupid, do me.
*** nsfw warning
Karim: What’s your body count?
Isobel: Do you mean sex or murder?
***
Henriette: What if people had food names and food had people names?
Wilhelmine: Hey, spaghetti, we’re having Henriette for dinner.
Friedrich: What is wrong with you people?
Gustav: Shut up, chocolate.
***
Friedrich: We’re going to have to split up, like in Scooby Doo.
Friedrich, to Henriette and Wilhelmine: You guys are Scooby and Shaggy. You can search the bathrooms.
Friedrich, to Gustav: Velma, you get the spooky looking fridge in the basement.
Gustav: What? Why am I Velma? And why do I get the… dubious looking device?
Friedrich: Because only Velma would say “dubious device”. Gustav gets the spooky fridge in the basement.
Wilhelmine: And what does that make you, Fred?
Friedrich: Bitch, I’m Daphne.
***
Wilhelmine: I'm cold.
Gustav: Here, take my hoodie.
*meanwhile*
Friedrich: I'm cold.
Henriette: I can't control the weather, Friedrich.
