#Queen Mary 2

On the off chance that anyone noticed my absence over the last week or so, I’ve been off on the holiday of a lifetime, sailing across the North Atlantic from Southampton to New York on the incredible Queen Mary 2. I’ve wanted to do this since I was about 12, and 28 years later, I finally had the means to make it happen.

What ocean liner is best?
Okay, there are so many potential ways to answer this question. Some are objective, some are subjective.
In terms of size, that would have to go to the Queen Mary 2. She's 149,215 tons, and 1,132 feet long.
In terms of speed, that would be the SS United States, with a service speed of 34 knots, a recorded top speed of 38, and a theoretical maximum of 42.
In terms of EXTERNAL beauty, that would (in my opinion) go to the SS United States as well. Her two long, teardrop shaped funnels are just GORGEOUS and there's a remarkable agreement with her proportions.
In terms of INTERNAL beauty, (in my opinion) it would either go to the Mauretania or the Olympic. They have prettier Edwardian decor than ships like the Oceanic or Carmania, but don't push it to the extreme like the Aquitania. I'm not a huge fan of the Art Deco movement in decor that came after that.
in terms of career? I would either say the Olympic or Queen Mary. The Olympic for example, survived a torpedo strike and (on a separate occasion) rammed and sank a U-Boat during World War 1.
My overall favorite goes to the Olympic, but I'm not sure if I would call her the "best objectively" if that makes sense.
I hope this answers your question. If not, please feel free to ask more!

Is time running out for QM2?
Is time running out for the last true ocean liner, Queen Mary 2?
This week in The Big Cruise Podcast listener Brad asked that exact question.
Chris Frame answers this listener question on QM2's 20th anniversary year, and looks at whether or not Cunard will ever build a replacement.

Every time I see something about the Queen Mary 2 being too formal, my immediate thought is just, "Yeah, you get ready for dinner if you're not in a casual setting."
Is this a norm that's died everywhere else??? Like my whole life when I've been packing for a trip or holiday, my clothes have been in two piles. One pile for my casual clothes for during the day and the other pile my clothes for dinner/at night??? Like, what do you mean you don't automatically pack your nice clothes for dinner??? For the evening??? You do not wear what you've been wearing the whole day for the evening if you're away from home.

a very rough digital speed painting practice of Cunard's QM2. The last ocean liner in the world to be in service to this day.

070 Queen Mary 2's Aft

A less than spectacular view of the QM2 from the less than spectacular end of Ferris Street. I'd been cycling hard and was a bit shaky

Do you know of any rumors of more ocean liner projects in the works? Or is it still too unprofitable at the moment?
So, in terms of "modern" ocean liners that are still in service, pretty much the only name in the game is the RMS Queen Mary 2. TECHNICALLY the MV Astoria WAS an ocean liner, formerly the Stockholm, but she was converted into a cruise ship. As far as I know, she's been laid up since 2021 anyway. I don't know of any future ocean liners in development (if there are any), but as I detailed in a previous post, I do suspect they'll be making somewhat of a comeback. In terms of classic liners, you have a few more options. The RMS Queen Mary is semi-permanently docked in Long Beach California, and over the past few years she's undergone some incredible renovations to preserve and restore her. Having been launched in 1935, she's the oldest liner that I know of to survive to the modern day. The SS United States is currently laid up in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She's nearly been scrapped on several occasions, and her interiors were yanked out and auctioned off, leaving her as pretty much an empty shell. She's in a very sorry state at the moment, but there are plans by the SS United States Conservancy to redevelop her into a floating hotel like the Queen Mary. Finally, much like the Queen Mary, the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 has been preserved as a floating hotel. Unfortunately, she's in Dubai, and from what I've heard, it can be very dangerous for members of the LGBT community there. I don't know specifics though. Also, from what I've heard, she's not in nearly as good shape as the Queen Mary, despite the decades of neglect, compared to the QE2, which has only been open for a few years and is comparatively much younger. So if you want to take a trans Atlantic crossing at the moment, your only option is the Queen Mary 2 at the moment. I've heard some cruise ships make OCCASIONAL crossings, but if they're open for bookings, I wouldn't reccomend it. Cruise ships aren't designed for that, and are famously unstable even in calm weather. Comparatively, frequent cruisers often praise the QM2, because they say she's so stable they often forget they aren't on land.

Queen Mary 2 turns 20!
It’s hard to believe that QM2 is 20 years old, but 20 years ago today, in 2004, the ship set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale.
As a tribute to the only true ocean liner left in service, I’ve made a celebration video with some highlights from the ship’s illustrious career. Enjoy!

Sodor receives a visit from Queen Mary 2.
She is enchanted by the island and meets Gordon, who still has his own prejudices against ocean liners, but with some help from his friends and Sir Topham Hatt, the big engine gives Mary a chance.
