One of my favorite character traits that Junpei has is how as much as he's protective and caring to his favorite people and impulsively jumps into danger to help others if he has an opportunity to without wanting anything in return and highly values the promises he makes he just seems to also always be more curious than he is sensible or empathetic, he gets so caught up on the horrors he sees but he has such a hard time looking away, he's right to analyze and be intrigued by the ninth man's remains but he stands around staring at it until he pukes, in the showers you can interact with the wall behind which lies "Snake's" corpse and he will pick up more details about it each time you click on it until he has to mentally rip himself away because it's not that he can't keep looking at it it's that he better look away and focus on getting out, and the way he talks to Clover about the body with every minutiae she wouldn't want to hear is like his brain connects faster to his mouth than it can connect to his sense of morality sometimes which I guess turned out to be a good thing in this one case or just good common sense in general like there's other minor things he blurts out at times, he's stated to not have tact be his strongest suit, he's insensitive on accident trying to fumble through interactions even if he's entirely confident on what he's saying he's soo sharp when he has a goal in mind but he's soo dense if he's trying to just exist my man is so traumatized and his brain always seems to default to taking the most of any given situation in as possible to desensitize himself instead of any other response and sometimes it pushes his mind to be so single mindedly entranced on not ending up that way too that he'll describe a mangled body in excruciating detail to a grieving relative even if that's his friend and even if he feels guilty about it immediately as soon as he catches up with what just left his mouth instead of staying in his thoughts

I'm procrastinating and felt the need to share with you all one of the several things that I think make movie Newt and book Newt so different.

Unlike Alby, we're made to like both book and movie Newt. He's one of Thomas's – and therefore our – only friends in the Glade. However, this likeability is found in different ways.

In the book, Newt is likeable by comparison. Thomas's thought process is something like "Hey, maybe Newt sucks, but Alby sucks more." (Yes, he does say repeatedly that he really likes Newt, but the only contact he's had with other humans at that point is Gally bullying him, Alby refusing to answer questions, and – not sure if it happened yet, but – Chuck provoking Gally into threatening Thomas).

In the movie, Newt is just ridiculously nice. On the first night Thomas is there, Newt decides to sit with him alone and try to make small talk with him, despite not really knowing him or having any sort of incentive to talk to him (besides just being a good person. which he really isn't in the book).

So, while the objective in both the book and movie was to make us like Newt, in the book it was done by making him better than everyone else, but still not really good (it honestly surprises me how utterly unlikeable he is when I isolate his interactions with Thomas from everything else in the book), while in the movie, since all the other characters were made to be nicer too, it was done by just sheer purity and goodness because there was no other way.

The tell-tale heart

It’s the first night together after Corin had reclaimed Din and the little bean from Tiem’s clutches. Despite doing little but resting all day, Corin still feels beat up and sore, which means he’s deep asleep in Din’s arms when it happens.

Din shoots up into a sitting position and half-flails as if trying to reach something he can’t see. Equally as sudden, the light is switched on and it floods the bedroom with horrible brightness, blinding Corin and leaving him horribly unprepared for Din diving down to grab a hold of his face and touching it with almost a bit of desperation.

“Are you okay?” Din blurts out.

Horribly confused, having no idea what is happening, Corin stares at his reflection in the t-visor and nods as much as the hands will let him.

“You’re okay?” Din demands to know, even though Corin just confirmed he was and Din can easily see for himself. He touches Corin’s face some more. “You’re really okay?” His hands are shaking.

“I’m… fine.” Corin offers with some hesitation and a lot of concern. “Are you?” What is going on?!

Din is out of breath, sounds more breathless than after hunting down a tricky bounty, and it isn’t just his hands that are shaking, it is his entire body. And he can’t stop touching Corin’s face. “You’re okay. You’re not... You’re... You’re okay.”

And that is when Corin’s brain finally activates and puts the pieces together. “Did you… dream?” About him dying. He can only imagine what Din had gone through yesterday being blind and helpless while Raga and Paz had tried to jump-start Corin’s stupid heart, not once but twice. If the roles had been reversed, Corin would be having nightmares too.

Din doesn’t answer the question, just keeps studying his face a bit longer before switching focus and gently places his fingers to Corin’s chest, where the bones had been broken due to the efforts to save his life.

Seeing how distraught Din is, Corin has to do something. Say something? But what? Words are weak against the horrors of the night, he knows by personal experience, but there has to be something he can do? Especially as it is Corin’s fault that Din is traumatized like this. How can he convince him his heart is fine now? Din won’t believe him if he simply says he’s fine. How can- Wait. Maybe if he…

“Din.” Corin moves up to ease the reluctant Din into lying down again. “I’m okay. I promise.” He settles on his back and manoeuvres Din to rest his head on his chest. “I’m okay. Adjust your settings and listen to what’s under your head; my heart is working just fine. Listen to my heart beating. Can you hear it?”

Din sluggishly presses something on the side of his helmet not resting against Corin’s skin and adjusts his position a little so his head is on top of where Corin’s heart is going nice and strong.

“Can you hear that? I’m right here with you, Din.” Corin whispers. “Just listen to my heart. I’m fi-” No, he can’t use that phrase. That would probably just set Din off again. “I’m okay, Din. Everything is okay.”

Din shudders, curls a little closer and hugs him a little tighter. He doesn’t say anything, but Corin’s stupid suggestion does seem to help as he slowly relaxes and keeps listening to the sound of the steady heartbeat until it carries him back to sleep, and luckily the bad dreams stay away after that.

Until the next night. Though, this time Corin knows what to do and Din listens to the sound of his heartbeat again until the dread leaves his body once more and he can drift back to sleep.

Eventually the nightmares start to fade as the incident grow more distant, more time goes by between the bad dreams until they go away entirely, but after a stressful day Din will still occasionally rest his head on Corin’s chest and listen to his heartbeat for his own enigmatic reasons.

Corin doesn’t mind. At all.

The fog lay thick across the land, moving almost imperceptibly away from Lake Celestine to take over Val Firmin, and then, perhaps, the world. That was how it felt, at least.

Rarely had Ixchel seen fog like that outside the Storm Coast, unless it was brought to a battlefield by Despair. As far as she could tell, however, no figures moved through the mist besides the members of her own caravan.

"Feels like that old ghost ship should come out of the fog at any moment," Carver muttered, and Mahariel barked out a laugh that made several of their companions jump.

"A ghost ship?" Merrill asked with surprise. "But we're so far from the ocean. Do they have large ships on this lake? Do they get a lot of bad storms?"

"No idea," said Carver. "It's a Fereldan story, anyway. Just came to mind."

Vivienne chuckled. "Is that where you get your namesake, Warden-Commander?"

Mahariel shrugged. "You would have to ask the ones who gave it to me," he demurred. Anticipating Merrill's next question, he continued: "They say when the fog is thick on the Storm Coast, an old ship called the Windline Marcher will be seen in the distance. People try to meet her but can never reach the ship before they find that they've sailed into dangerous waters and sink themselves."

He patted Merrill on the arm. "Don't ask what that has to do with the Dalish Teyrn. I haven't the foggiest."

He laughed again, and his companion's groans fell loudly upon their ears in the close confines of the mist. Their party lapsed into uneasy silence for a few moments, but that was nearly as unbearable as the harsh and unsettling sound of their own voices, and it wasn't long before someone spoke again.

"Val Firmin is a lovely, peaceful place, but it has its share of superstitions," Vivienne said. "They're not quite as provincial, I'm afraid. Ill-fortune befell the ruling house for a time. Mysterious deaths and generational bad luck drove the lady of the house to destroy her family mask--absolutely scandalous, but their fortune has since risen."

"There are new ghost stories," said Argent, and suddenly it seemed everyone wished for silence again. The agent spoke like a Tranquil, even, emotionless in her intonation, and just quiet enough that even in the closeness of the fog it required them to strain their ears. She walked along placidly, face forward and shorn head covered with her hood. She moved, like all assassins, as a ghost herself.

"Children," she said. "They say on these nights, you can hear children playing in the fog. If you follow the sounds they'll lead you to the same place, no matter where around the lake you start."

She turned her head slowly and fixed Thom with a stony look.

"It's a little road, just inside a copse of trees south of the Callier summer estate," she said.

"That's enough, agent," Charter ordered.

"It's very peaceful," Argent said neutrally.

Ixchel moved a little faster to come abreast of Thom. He hung his head, jaw clenched so tight that his beard trembled.

"I didn't realize it was here," she said softly. "I'm sorry."

Mahariel watched them, suspicious as ever. She met his eye askance, then bit her lip and looked back at Thom.

"Remember, you're a Warden now," she said. "You're paying your life twice over, Thom."

"Right," he muttered. "I'm in good company."

Carver looked back and forth between them all in confusion. "Somehow that doesn't sound like you mean it in a good way."

Thom winced. "Present company excluded. I just meant... I'm not the only man paying for a terrible crime with service to the Order."

At that, Carver's face hardened. "Well you certainly don't hold yourself like a man who's happy to've escaped a death sentence," he said. "I've met some of those. Gleeful they get license to continue on with their ways."

"No, he's one of your Andrastian sinners," Mahariel observed, predatory eyes never once leaving the side of Tom's head. Reflecting the dim mage light, he had a predatory look, as if he could see right through Thom's skull and found the hiding spot of a particularly juicy prey. "The Wardens is a rightful penance, a sacred path to redemption. But there is no absolution for the fallen, only the dying."

He leaned closer, letting the light slide from his face so that his eyes seemed as flat and pale as a corpse's.

"We're dead men, Rainier," Mahariel said with a grin, too wide to reach his eyes. "This life's miserable enough without the self-flagellation, let me tell you."

Osomatsu - drinking buddies, he plays up his attraction to them around his brothers but when they're alone he treats them normally. They are rather close.

Karamatsu - they avoid him at all costs. His very existence repels them.

Choromatsu - they can't stand being around him too long. He's ok in small amounts but they don't really like being around him a lot

Ichimatsu - they hang out sometimes and enjoy each other's company.

Jyushimatsu - homoerotic besties YAY

Todomatsu - moots online, they met him first through their job

Now for the side characters :D

Totoko - they are very attracted to her. They love a woman who can kick their ass. Their relationship isn't very deep due to their awkwardness towards attractive women.

Nyaa-chan - they don't know jack shit about her nor would they care to due to Choromatsu liking her a little too much

Matsuyo and Matsuzo - weirdly attracted to both of them but they don't want to tell the brothers because that would be VERY awkward. They are very awkward with them.

Dekapan and Dayon - they are scared of Dayon but thinks Dekapan is goofy

Hatabou - he's intimidating to them for some weird reason

Iyami - they are also intimidated by him. They once saw him fight cats for scraps of food, they don't want to fuck with him at all.

Chibita - he verbally questions their choices, meanwhile, they keep him updated with their life. They met Chibita through the sextuplets and they enjoy his food.

I included a denki mystery design because tbh denki mystery is my fave :D

ANYWAYS SO! More rambling ahead about them!

They are replacing the Osomatsu-san staff but noncanonically, so their meta bullshit powers aren't that strong. It's strong enough that they can push reality to be sort of what they want, but they usually don't get their way.

Okay so it’s been a while, I haven’t found the time to watch episodes lately so this truly is the irregular Buffy update (my notes are really gonna pay off here its been like two weeks since I’ve seen the most recent of these episodes). So first of all I was gonna say yeah Series 5 it does feel like a bit of a reset (even beyond suddenly Dawn), but like really pretty much every one so far except for S2 into S3 felt like a bit of a reset so should I really be surprised?

So Buffy vs Dracula, loved this ep. I loved everyone being so excited to meet the actual Dracula, he’s so fun, Anya having history with him, Xander, Riley and Tara all being jealous of him. Also like its a pretty straightforward set up on what everyone wants to accomplish over the next batch of episodes which doesn’t normally happen like this in the show? Buffy wanting to learn about the deep Slayer lore, Giles and Xander wanting to exit their flop era, Riley being a bit jealous and still wanting to be helpful but in a bit over his head, Willow wants more magic? I guess? Good for her she didn’t actually have a moment to be like this is my goal going forwards. I also have in my notes here RIP Gwendolyn Post from the OP. Also ‘RIP Dracula what a legend’ followed immediately by ‘RIP Dracula?’ So more RIPs than usual.

Real Me, also real good, loved the diary framing device with a show that now has eight (?) main characters I think are in the OP now its a real economical and effective way of getting all these new dynamics they need with Dawn, as someone who has definitely always been there. Really enjoy Harmony ending up top dog vampire by virtue of attrition. There’s something real neat about that conflict between Buffy and Dawn over Dawn being able to have had a normal childhood and Buffy having had to spend hers being the Slayer considering Dawn has not really had said childhood.

Something I enjoyed from my notes 'Dawn has good taste, likes Willow and Tara' followed later on by 'Dawn has bad taste, dislikes Anya'. But I do enjoy Dawn I think she’s a real good addition to the cast particularly in the fun new dynamics it gives her with Buffy but I think it’s a pretty good dynamic with everyone it really adds a lot. They laid it on a bit thick that she might be malevolent so I’m going with she’s not evil and that's all smokescreen.

The Replacement, I thought it was pretty good Xander episode, fun twist lotta fun in general. He finally manages to start crawling out of the loser allegations, good for him and beats his Restless nightmare which like great for him he gets straight out that basement nobody else has that kind of efficiency to beat their nightmare in just three episodes. I don’t really have too much to say about it but I enjoyed it. Oh yeah I guess it does say something about Xander’s portrayal that him with only his negative qualities reads kinda perfectly as Xander and him with only his positive qualities reads as a demon who’s taken over his life. Oh yeah and they mention Anya has her own place? I guess I just assumed she's been crashing with Xander the whole tiem. Where does she live? Does she have a job to pay for it? Why do they seem to exclusively hang out in Xander's basement? It raises a few questions.

So Out of My Mind, like I’m still not like the biggest fan of Riley but I do appreciate the work done in this episode to draw parallels between him and Spike considering it looks we’re finally going in the Spike/Buffy direction, I’ve enjoyed Buffy/Angel and Buffy/Faith so far so we’ll see how the third of her big ships goes for me later. But anyway I thought this was actually a pretty neat follow up to his stuff with the Initiative. My favourite comparison between Spike and Riley here was the big one with Riley’s goal in this episode is to not have life saving surgery from the government doctor so that he can remain strong and be part of Buffy’s life and his fear of what they’ll put in there like the chip that Spike is desperate to get out with life risking surgery so that he can become strong again (and fight Buffy). Also like, personally I don’t really buy the Riley relationship being that crucial to Buffy but I do appreciate the acting in that scene where she talks about how important he is to her, also congrats to Riley for pulling that I’m deciding we’re breaking up now to avoid later complications like Angel did. Also like I want to take this moment to formally apologise to Joyce, back in Lover’s Walk I’d made a note about how Joyce talks about how Buffy likes History when that’s actually one of the subjects she’s really bad at as a sign of Joyce not knowing as much as she should about Buffy, but this episode proves she knows her better than I do because Buffy and Willow have their scholarly debate over History in this episode she is actually good there.

Also enjoy that the four episodes all so far have a broadly similar underlying theme of people not being as they should be that feels like it ties in with the weirdness of Dawn being there; Buffy vs Dracula for Buffy, with her being more forced towards the Slayer balance of her life following her dream adventures with the First Slayer. Real Me for Dawn obviously, The Replacement for Xander with the premise of the episode feeling like its gonna be broadly similar to the Dawn situation with him being replaced, Out of my Mind for Riley acting out of sorts with his Initiative experiment side effects.

Anyway Angel’s alright, I like the idea of this Darla plot thread going forwards, it’s a nice reversal from S1’s overarching plot of Angel needing to build human connection for S2 to be about the consequences of his vampiric connections, shout out to Judgement for having a pregnancy storyline that isn’t Expecting. Great to see Lorne’s introduction, is it a bit convenient to have both Cordelia’s visions to start plots and his karaoke to solve them? Perhaps, but Angel doing karaoke is great so I can forgive it. I like the usage of Angel effectively killing himself with that random demon who was acting as the girl’s protector to pull the rug out form under the team who were riding high coming in from S1. Also surprise Faithwatch, was not expecting her to make an appearance until way later but it was a nice usage of her for an additional perspective on the road to redemption with Angel messing up this episode as well.

So like I dunno if its sacrilege or something, but I gotta be honest 2x02 did not grab me at all, there’s some decent stuff in the second half but David Boreanaz had to pretty much carry this entire episode on his shoulders and I think he does good work with people around him but I don’t think he succeeded here to do the majority of this episode solo. And when I looked up on my phone to see what the popular opinion on this episode was (which I don't usually do especially mid ep but as I said I was very not grabbed) all I found were threads about how this was the best episode of Angel, the moment people fell in love with the series, the episode that marked AtS as better than BtVS. So yeah unpopular opinion I guess but I wasn’t a fan. Like I say there was some decent stuff, like seeing the interim between freshly souled Angel and eating rats in the alleys Angel, the Angel lynching scene and the climax were pretty strong but it just did not grab me.

And First Impressions, I like a lot of stuff in this episode, I like the backslide from being connected to the world that Darla is causing to Angel, I like having a Cordelia and Gunn focussed episode with him being promoted to main cast. But the idea of Cordelia and Gunn’s plot being that she needs to fix him isn’t great, y'know? I do like the mirroring it has with Angel though that both of them are too focussed on the past, with Gunn pushing himself too hard and Angel becoming overly sedate in withdrawing into it.

But yeah having a good time, looking forward to watching some more especially Buffy, hopefully it doesn’t take me like a month to watch a few more episodes.

you did send these a while ago, but reading them now is REALLY making me nostalgic for s5 buffy. i am still only in s6 of my rewatch but it has been. difficult. a season of big highs and lows and a lot of little things in between that kinda put me off. but we persevere! personally, my biggest motivator is 1) knowing i'm so near the end of the series 2) knowing once i do this i can finally let myself read all those s6 AUs i've been hoarding.

mostly just posting in appreciation of your commentary per usual but i especially enjoy what you highlighted about dawn. the way she represents so much of what buffy wants but couldn't have. dawn getting babied by joyce, really being a kid. having everyone look out for her. buffy's jealousy of that is deeply humanizing and ALSO goes to highlight how young she still is. siblings have a way of bringing the kid out in us, i think, now matter how far away from your childhood you feel.

i love dawn, i think her introduction is genuinely brilliant. i came to the show after it had already ended, so i can't imagine how insane it must have felt to watch that as it aired.
