Nvidia, founded 1993, rarely loses. The quality of its products has bankrupted and driven out many competitors. It has promoted deep learning and AI hardware and made many of the best graphics cards. Still, its latest cards’ expensive RTX 40-series GPUs and questionable Frame Generation features are flaws.

Let’s forget the sad present and remember Nvidia’s exciting past. Since GeForce was founded 24 years ago, Nvidia has made many great GPUs, most of which can compete with AMD’s. Think these are Top 5 Nvidia GPUs, including families and cards.

1. RTX 3060

RTX 30-series looked promising in 2020. Architecture, ray tracing, tensor cores, raw performance, and price were better. Prices were far below expectations. A 30-series GPU or any graphics card was rare near MSRP.

After the 30-series launched in late 2020, Nvidia added lower-performance models. The midrange was crucial because the RTX 20-series’ 2060 and 2060 Super weren’t good GTX 1060 successors. Nvidia didn’t have to work hard on a new Top 5 Nvidia GPUs in 2021 because anyone could buy a pulse GPU, but the RTX 3060 surprised everyone.

Midrange Not all Nvidia products are good, but the RTX 3060 was. Double the VRAM (12GB) of the RTX 2060, it performed better. It had more VRAM than 10GB RTX 3080.

That AMD’s midrange cards, usually powerful, were weak was even more surprising. The RX 6600 and 6600 XT had decent horsepower but 8GB VRAM, FSR 1.0 upscaling instead of DLSS, and came out months later. VRAM capacity was usually better for AMD than the 30-series, except for Navi 23 cards.

Even after Nvidia’s first “self-owned” attempt to lock out Ethereum mining, the RTX 3060 had a GPU shortage. The shortage ended in 2022, making the 3060 a cheap GPU. The 6600 and 6600 XT dropped below $300, while the 3060 never reached $329. FSR 2.0’s quality and performance improvements made it more competitive with DLSS, reducing the 3060’s advantage.

Nvidia’s midrange GPU RTX 3060 remains strong. Great card that challenged AMD despite pricing and availability issues. The 30-series was usually too expensive or had too little VRAM, but this was the best. Unfortunately, the RTX 4060 undid most of that progress.

2.GTX 680

Nvidia rarely makes major mistakes, but Fermi was one. Fermi, introduced in the GTX 480 in mid-2010, only improved performance over the 200-series and consumed tons of power, not what Nvidia needed. Despite the dire situation, Nvidia released a second Fermi and GTX 500-series before 2010, improving product efficiency.

Fermi likely changed Nvidia’s strategy. Throughout the 2000s, Nvidia trailed Radeon (ATI and then AMD) in nodes. Newer nodes were more expensive and had “teething pains.” but had better efficiency, performance, and density. By the mid-2000s, Nvidia’s strategy was to make big Top 5 Nvidia GPUs on older nodes, typically placing GeForce first.

After the traumatic Fermi experience, Nvidia joined AMD at 28nm in early 2012. The first 28nm GPU, Kepler, differed from Fermi and previous architectures. The latest process made its largest version lean at just under 300mm2 and efficient. Nvidia and AMD flagships competed differently in 2012.

Nvidia released the Kepler-powered GTX 680 three months after AMD released the HD 7970. AMD’s HD 4000- and 5000-series GPUs were great, but the 680 was faster, more efficient, and smaller than the 7970. Nvidia only led these metrics slightly, but it led all three, which was rare or unprecedented.

Nvidia lost performance to the HD 7970 GHz Edition and better AMD drivers, but it led power and area efficiency. AMD faced another Kepler revision, which powered the GTX 700-series and forced the launch of a hot and power-hungry Radeon R9 290X. Fermi-like R9 290X beat GTX 780, but GTX 780 Ti reclaimed the title.

GTX 680 isn’t remembered, but it should be. AMD’s strategy helped Nvidia beat Fermi. Perhaps a better Top 5 Nvidia GPUs did the same thing and overshadowed it.

3. GTX 980

GeForce and Radeon battled for generations from the early 2000s to the early 2010s. Nvidia won most of the time, but ATI (later AMD) was close. One side was defeated only when ATI’s Radeon 9700 Pro defeated Nvidia’s GeForce 4 Ti 4600. Nvidia nearly repeated this scenario several times.

The stars must align for Nvidia by mid-2010s. Chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD’s GPU partner TSMC struggled to move beyond 28nm. Nvidia could make big Nvidia GPUs on old nodes without AMD responding with a new node. Top 5 Nvidia GPUs AMD was near bankruptcy, but Nvidia had more resources.

The perfect storm occurred when these two factors coincided. Kepler did well in the GTX 600- and 700-series, but Maxwell in the GTX 900-series (and GTX 750 Ti) was different. From 28nm, performance, power efficiency, and density improved.

The 980 was 15% faster, twice as efficient as the 290X, and cut 40mm2 of die area. The 980 was 40% more efficient, 10% faster, and 160mm2 smaller than the 780 Ti.

Though not as impressive as the Radeon 9700 Pro, this was a huge win. Like AMD’s HD 5870 attack on Nvidia. AMD had no Nvidia GPUs deterrent to Nvidia. AMD’s Radeon 200-series barely survived 2014.

AMD tried again in 2015, but only high-end. From low to high midrange, it refreshed the Radeon 200-series as the 300-series and used its new Fury lineup for the top. With a larger Maxwell GPU, Nvidia’s GTX 980 Ti defeated AMD’s R9 Fury X. The 980 Ti was preferable to the 4GB Fury X (a decent card) because it had 6GB of memory.

Though Nvidia won, the GTX 900-series changed gaming graphics cards forever. The Fury X was AMD’s last competitive flagship until the 2020 RX 6900 XT because AMD stopped making them every generation. AMD makes flagship Nvidia GPUs again (knock on wood), but Maxwell crippled Radeon for years.

4.8800 GTX

Modern graphics cards emerged in the early 2000s as Nvidia and ATI improved. Nvidia’s GeForce 256 introduced hardware-accelerated transform and lighting, while ATI’s Radeon 9700 Pro showed GPUs should be big and have more computational hardware. After losing big to the 9700 Pro in 2002, Nvidia made bigger and better GPUs.

Though ATI started the arms race, Nvidia was determined to win. In late 2006, Nvidia and ATI had GPUs as large as 300mm2, but Nvidia’s Tesla architecture scaled to nearly 500mm2 with the G80 chip. That size is typical for a flagship Nvidia GPUs today, but not then.

Tesla’s GeForce 8800 GTX hit AMD in late 2006 like the Radeon 9700 Pro did Nvidia four years earlier. Size helped the 8800 GTX beat ATI’s flagship Radeon X1950 XTX, which was almost 150mm2 smaller. Because it was fast and power hungry, the 8800 GTX normalized GPUs with 150+ watt TDPs, even though it seems quaint now.

BFGPU creator ATI couldn’t compete with 8800 GTX. HD 2000-series, at 420mm2, couldn’t compete with G80 chip and Tesla architecture. ATI shifted to smaller, more efficient Nvidia GPUs with higher performance density. The HD 3000-series flagship HD 3870 was surprisingly small at just under 200mm2, and the HD 4000- and 5000-series followed with similar die sizes.

Nvidia now replaces powerfu lNvidia GPUs with even more powerful ones to show AMD who’s boss, but not then. The Tesla architecture was so good that Nvidia used it again for the GeForce GTX 9000 series, a faster 8000 series. Despite being almost half the price of the 8800 GTX, the 9800 GTX was boring.

The 8800 GTX’s age belies its modernity. It had two 6-pin power connectors, an aluminum-finned cooler, and a high-end GPU die size. Despite being a modern GPU, it only supported DirectX 10, which didn’t survive.

5. GTX 1080 Ti

The Nvidia GTX 600-, 700-, and 900-series 28nm GPUs were hot. Every win over AMD’s cards was bigger. After the Fury X, AMD stopped making flagship Nvidia GPUs, leaving Nvidia alone for the next generation.

AMD left as TSMC’s 16nm node entered volume production. AMD used GlobalFoundries, which licensed Samsung’s 14nm, to make graphics cards because TSMC was too expensive. Note that TSMC’s 16nm node was better.

Despite its great GTX 900-series architecture, Nvidia went 28nm to 16nm. Nvidia outperformed AMD in process nodes for the first time in a while with TSMC’s 16nm. A shrunken Maxwell, the 16nm Pascal architecture introduced few new features, mostly for VR, which Nvidia (and AMD) were disappointed by. Only Rise of the Tomb Raider used Voxel Ambient Occlusion (VXAO), but it improved ray tracing.

GTX 10-series shrank without losing power. The 2016 flagship GPU GTX 1080 outperformed the GTX 980’s 700-series improvements. The 1080 was 30% faster, twice as efficient, and half the size of the 980 Ti. Pascal’s 16nm shrink optimized Maxwell after 28nm.

AMD’s old R9 Fury X, regular R9 Fury, and compact R9 Nano competed with the GTX 1080 and 1070 in 2014. Instead, AMD introduced the RX 400 series, starting with the 480. Nvidia’s GTX 1060 was good and efficient like the 1080. AMD’s specialty was midrange GPUs, and driver updates and the 480’s 2GB VRAM kept it competitive.

The GTX 1080 won 2016 and 2017 when AMD’s RX Vega flagship GPUs debuted. AMD performed similarly to the 1080 and 1070 but was less efficient. The GTX 1080 Ti, a larger Pascal GPU, got ahead of AMD three months earlier. Fury X mostly matched the 980 Ti, but Vega 64 couldn’t match the 1080.

GTX 10-series performance, efficiency, and price are remembered. Since the RTX 20-, 30-, and 40-series lack the 10-series’ diverse product stack, it may be Nvidia’s last great graphics card series. Nvidia released good $100 GTX 1050 and $700 GTX 1080 models over time. The GTX 10-series coincided with peak PC gaming.

GeForce RTX 4090

They debated including the GeForce RTX 4090, which is absent from this list. Great hardware and fast GPU, but complicated. They concluded with an honorable/dishonorable mention. The GPUs were best and worst.

Like the 980 Ti and 1080 Ti, the 4090 is the fastest gaming GPU. The 4090 outperforms AMD’s RX 7900 XTX in ray tracing and DLSS over FSR despite having similar horsepower. Though smaller than the 1080 Ti’s, the 4090’s performance lead is impressive.

The 4090’s two main drawbacks are noticeable. The 4090 uses the problematic 12VHPWR connector and consumes over 400 watts, making power issues worse. The power plug has been discontinued and revised, but many 4090 cards made before the redesign are unaffected. Fermi didn’t burn, so 4090 was likely a disaster.

PC gaming has become more expensive in the past five years, as shown by the 4090. At $1,600, it’s as expensive as a good gaming PC. The 3090 was designed as a Titan-class luxury GPU, but the 4090 merely follows it in price. The 3080 was slower than the 3090, but the 4080 was much slower.

A direct successor to the 980 Ti and 1080 Ti is unlikely due to the 4090’s high price. Launched at $649 and $699, the 980 Ti and 1080 Ti were affordable. The cheapest 4090s cost $2,000 or more, so its ridiculous $1,599 MSRP is unattainable.

Despite its strengths, the RTX 4090 is not Nvidia’s best GPU. Not as good as its predecessors. Instead of melting connectors and costing $1,000, it could have been the next GTX 1080 Ti. They await a champion.

Hello friends, this is self critical automaton, a mechanical entity clad in frail meats, and I come to you now with an important message.

TL;DR, my let’s plays are a vital social and creative outlet for my disabled ass, but my graphics card is breaking down irreparably and, in this time of massive price inflation thanks to bot-netting scalpers and crypto-wonks, I cannot even slightly afford to replace it.

After a decade of disability, and several years of being too ill to leave the house, in 2019 I finally started to recover. I started to have a life outside again. Then, in 2020, despite taking every precaution, I caught covid. It left me bed-bound for months, and as I slowly recovered, I rediscovered my old hobby of making Let’s Plays. Unable to go outdoors, it quickly became an important avenue for socializing, and even more importantly it allowed me to rediscover my creative side and my passion for applying critical skills to games. After all, if Game Are Art as the gamesmen love to holler, then they deserve to be examined as works of art. I also found that I’m actually pretty good at it. Several months ago, in 2021, I caught covid a second time, from a delivery guy who masklessly coughed his way up the stairs to my apartment door. That time I ended up in hospital, and I have likely taken permanent damage to my body. I often can;t even walk five minutes to the medical clinic without putting myself back in bed for a day or more, struggling to breathe. Due to that hospital stay, I went on hiatus. I have since resumed posting videos, but it’s more of a struggle than it ever was before- and now my graphics card is dying. It’s an R9-200 series, nearly a decade old (in fact, it’s the card I bought when I first thought about making let’s plays back in 2014), but it’s been on the verge of wearing out for a while now, and its no longer even supported by the manufacturer. In the past couple of weeks, it’s drivers began to crash with increasing frequency, and I’m often completely unable to record anything. I’ve even had to cancel a couple series I’ve been working on. Where am I going with this? Well, I’m fundraising to supplement the small amount of cash I can afford to spare, so that I can continue to make my silly little internet videos. My audience may be small at this stage, but I’m deeply proud of the entertainment I provide them, and I need your help to keep doing that. Completely computer dumb gamer girl needs your help!

So I recently bought battlefield 5 as a reward for finishing a final project for myself. However my pc from 2014 is struggling to run it. My specs say I should be able to run it. In fact I've had several matches with no issue. However if I need to play from a fresh restart every time I want that experience. Otherwise the framerates is too choppy. My specs are:

Intel i7-4790k quad core CPU at 4.00 ghz

Amd radeon R9 200 series graphics card with 6912 mb of available graphics memory and 3017 of dedicated graphics memory

16gb of RAM

Fallout 76: release date, beta details, trailers

The Tricentennary is nearly upon us, so in order to prepare for the special day, it’s once again time to gather up everything that we know about Fallout 76 since it was revealed at E3 2018. There are a bunch of trailers, some explanations about how it’ll play, and the release dates for both the beta and the game itself. You can find all of this, along with everything else we know about the game so far, including any hidden details that could hint at what is to come.

What is Fallout 76’s release date?

Fallout 76’s release date is November 14th, and there will also be a public beta (or “Break-it Early Test Application” as they dubbed it). The beta will take place on October 30th for PC and is guaranteed for those who have pre-ordered the game at participating retailers, but access will be drip-fed all the way up to the game’s release date.

Two special editions of the game were also announced as well. The Tricentennial Edition includes the following items:

Sadly for those who fancy having all the world’s Fallout 76 stuff, the Power Armor Edition has now sold out. It included a glow-in-the-dark map of the region and some figures, as well as a wearable T-51 helmet. It was only available inside the US, anyway.

What are the Fallout 76 system requirements?

Both the beta and the full game share the same system requirements, however according to the official FAQ for the Fallout 76 beta, the file that you will need to download for the beta will only require 45GB of hard drive space. For PC owners, the game will update to the full version once the game launches, which will download the extra 15GB as an update in the Bethesda Launcher. Below are the minimum and recommended specs:

That said, the early impressions of even the Xbox One X version show that the game may have some performance issues, though the video below is based on a pre-beta version of the game. It’s possible that the game will have better performance on PC and we’ll update you with any further analysis on performance as it arises.

When does the Fallout 76 beta run from?

On PC, you’ll be able to play the beta if you pre-ordered the game on Tuesday 30th October. While we don’t currently know what times the beta will be running on PC, we can look at the schedule from the Xbox beta that has been running. The first session began at 00:00 (BST) on Wednesday 24th October and lasted for four hours. The next two sessions will be running on 22:00 (BST) until 00:00 (BST) on Saturday 27th October, lasting a total of two hours; while a second weekend session will be running from 16:00 (GMT) until 18:00 (GMT). Note that the clocks go back this weekend, so this is why the time zones are different.

So what we can deduce from that is that the first session on Tuesday 30th October will likely be a longer session, followed up by a couple of other sessions lasting a couple of hours at a time. However, this is certainly not a confirmation and we will be updating this article once Bethesda announces the beta’s schedule.

What does the Fallout 76 beta contain?

Bethesda have said that the beta is the full game and that the current plan is for any progress made during the beta period to carry over to the full game at launch, though the details of this are still coming. This means that it’s entirely possible to be able to do anything you would do in the main game, such as venture through the Appalachian region to cross state borders from the main state of West Virginia, set up a camp with friends, shoot enemies/other players, or even drop an atom bomb on a rival’s camp.

What are Fallout 76’s “Atoms”?

While you play Fallout 76, you’ll earn a currency called Atoms by completing various gameplay challenges and achievements. This “currency” can be used to acquire cosmetic customisation items for your character. On top of this, when Fallout 76 officially launches, Atoms will be able to be purchased separately for real money, however you can apparently get plenty of Atoms without the need to sink in real money.

When and where does Fallout 76 take place?

As if the music choice in the trailers didn’t give the game away already, Fallout 76 will be set in the Appalachian region, housing the entire state of West Virginia and parts of the surrounding states. Beyond that though, there are more subtle touches that hint at just how much is crammed into the map. Todd Howard did mention during the Microsoft conference that the map would be four times the size of any previous Fallout game. As mentioned during our latest video, the area is split into six different regions. Vault 76 opens somewhere in the forest region, but there is also the Toxic Valley, The Mire, Savage Divide, Ash Heap, and Cranberry Bog. Only Cranberry Bog is based on a real location, though individual buildings are also all over the place.

Perhaps the more interesting questions for Fallout fans are “When does Fallout 76 take place?” and “What’s the story behind Vault 76?”. Surprisingly, Vault 76 has been mentioned in the past. From what was said in the past in both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, Vault 76 was not one of the experimental vaults and housed 500 occupants. This marks the first time the player character will emerge from one of the seventeen “control” vaults. Only two previous control vaults have been shown in the series – one that was opened after 10 years and another that delayed their opening after concerns were raised about the conditions in the outside world. Despite claims to the contrary, Vault 13 from the original Fallout was not a control vault as, according to the “Fallout Vault Gamepedia”, it was, “Intended to stay closed for 200 years as a study of prolonged isolation, or until the Vault’s residents were needed by the Enclave. The Vault Dweller emerged from here in 2161, in search of a replacement water chip for the Vault.”

There’s a little more lore out there about Vault 76, as according to a terminal in the Citadel in Fallout 3, Vault 76 “…will operate exactly according to the plan dictated in the marketing material produced by Vault-Tec and precisely to resident expectations. This vault will open automatically after a period of 20 years and the residents will be pushed back into the open world for study in comparison to the other experiments.” This didn’t really happen though as the opening of the Vault was delayed until the year 2102 when, presumably, the events of Fallout 76 take place.

Things also didn’t go all that smoothly in the construction of the Vault as the Assistant CEO of Vault-Tec – Giles Wolstencroft was abducted by aliens while inspecting the construction of Vault 76. From the audio-log found in Fallout 3, there’s no reason to suggest that Giles made it back after some electronic shock experiments. Vault 76’s completion is also briefly mentioned by a newscaster in Fallout 4.

Where are all the people?

One thing that while a lot of the game did seem rather familiar, such as how crafting works (even with the addition of the new crafting table), or how weapon customisation works, it did seem rather strange in the previews from outlets such as GameSpot was the lack of people.

Enemies and robots were plentiful, ranging from tiny bugs and relatively harmless Protectrons, to horrific monsters and fully-kitted out cybernetic tools of destruction. They commented on this by saying that “This lack of traditional interactions and storytelling felt more noticeable the deeper we dove into the world.”

Of course, being set only 25 years after the bombs dropped helps explain this, but it does seem odd that the only humans you see are other players from a quest-giving perspective. Some are triggered by radio stations, while others as you enter areas.

How does PVP work in Fallout 76?

Firstly, other players can attack you without notice. There does seem to a sort of pacifism perk that all new players have until level 5. From that point onwards, you are open to be attacked at any time since the perk will be removed. You will take reduced damage until you attack back. If you can kill them, you’ll be able to loot their bodies in order to obtain some caps, and other interesting items. A bounty will be set on offending players who murder those without a bounty on their head, allowing others in the server to hunt them for an increased cap reward.

When you die, you leave behind a “death bag” of sorts, which will contain all your junk. You’ll be able to respawn nearby should you so wish, allowing you to make a mad dash for your dropped loot. I’ve not found any information about what happens if you die again or leave the death bag lying around for too long, but this will be updated once the information comes to light.

You can go at it all alone of course, but Fallout 76 encourages players to team up and work together. Players can party up with three other players to raid locations, complete quests, build communities, or just have a nice jam on a cliffside. It’s unclear how robust the online harassment controls will be, but early indications show that they seem to have thought of the least provocative solution, which is encouraging. Radio stations will also apparently be used to initiate PVP focused missions.

The idea was first conceived four years ago according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, with elements of open world survival. He describes the game as “soft-core survival” where death isn’t permanent and characters are only linked to a dedicated server. There will be a short pool of players rather than everyone playing all at once in one place, with players able to team up with up to four of them, and progression in your personal campaign goes with you. In a series of videos that are done in the style of Vault-Tec vignettes, we get an idea of the various concepts behind it.

What about VATS?

Todd Howard did later confirm in an interview with Geoff Keighley that VATS is there for targeting specific parts, but it will now be in real time. The way it seems to work is that you don’t specifically aim at limbs anymore, but are able to move around while in VATS to shoot enemies without requiring to aim at them too much.

Managing hunger and thirst

Much like the survival mode in Fallout 4, there is now a hunger and thirst bar above your health bar, meaning you’ll need to manage your intake of food and drink a little more. However this seems to be a slightly simplified variant, focusing on the player’s individual hunger and thirst as opposed to that of the settlements nearby.

What are Perk Cards?

Levelling up seems to have been drastically changed in Fallout 76. When you level up, you’ll be able to sink a point into one of the SPECIAL stats. But for the actual perks themselves, those will be handled by Perk Cards that are obtained after levelling up.

Each of the SPECIAL stats has associated perks that can be equipped, though you don’t need to choose the perk with the corresponding SPECIAL stat you increased. You’ll of course need to have enough points in the relevant SPECIAL stat to equip that Perk Card, however they can be shared with your team (provided you have three points in Charisma) and you can swap them out at any time.

Any duplicates that you find can also be combined to make better versions of those cards. For example, the perk card “Gladiator” would normally increase one-handed melee weapon damage by 10%, however if you combine with a duplicate card, you’ll be able to combine them to increase the one-handed melee weapon damage increase to 20%.

What was shown in the Fallout 76 E3 trailers?

We first got a good glimpse of Fallout 76 at E3 during Microsoft’s conference. Here we see a fair few of the locations in West Virginia in varying states of disrepair, such as the state capitol, the Greenbrier Resort, and West Virginia university to name a few. Given the colour of the trees, it seems to be once again set in the autumn as the trees have a wide range of colours on display.

In the subsequent presentation at Bethesda’s conference later that night, we were introduced to some of the creatures based on the folklore of West Virginia, including one seen on a cover of a pulp fiction booklet called “The Beast of Grafton” which is based on the Grafton Monster. There are other nasty beasties: A giant sloth with mold on its back, a spider with a hornet’s nest on its bum – which incidentally came straight from my nightmares, and even this flying bat monster ripped straight out of the Batman comics if that silhouette is anything to go by.

What else can I do in Fallout 76?

Unlike Fallout 4 where crafting was limited to safe locations, Fallout 76 gives players the option to build wherever they want. If you want to build your castle in the middle of a swamp, using the all new “C.A.M.P.” or “Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform”, then you’re free to do so. It still requires resources to build everything from buildings to turrets, but there’s also a larger emphasis on needing certain skills to make certain items.

There also seems to be a hunger and thirst meter, which may be unfamiliar to those who never touched the survival mode in Fallout 4. Perhaps technology to purify water will be easily made within Fallout 76, though too early to help the overseer of Vault 101 from Fallout 3.

Fallout 76 also, perhaps unwisely, gives players the opportunity to press the nuclear button. These require the acquisition of launch codes, which you and others can possess to drop the atom bomb on an unsuspecting foe. Once dropped, the landscape will change dramatically and even introduce new resources and mutated wildlife to suit the new surroundings.

Any other information regarding Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 will be Bethesda Game Studio’s main focus this year as other projects are being held back until 2019 and beyond. However there is no season pass, in a clear departure from how Fallout 4 did things. Instead they’re going to introduce new stuff for free during the game’s lifespan, and rely on cosmetic items as part of a micro-transaction strategy.

It’s also been confirmed in a recent interview with Pete Hines – Head of Marketing at Bethesda, that mod support will take a lot of time to be supported, with GameSpot summarising that “Hines cautioned that mods may not be supported in Fallout 76 until November 2019 at the soonest.”

Caution:

Tested cards may not meet the minimum bar for use with all GPU features. In addition to basic functionality, some Photoshop features, especially those which use APIs like OpenCL, require greater bandwidth, memory, or compute resources than other Photoshop features. These requirements can pose significant challenges when cards are placed in older machines, such as ones with low-powered motherboards or machines that make use of a single DIMM for their system memory, effectively halving the bandwidth between the system memory and the GPU memory.

Additionally, the relevant tests are performed when Photoshop starts up. On computers barely meeting the requirements, other running software may tip the balance from a card passing to failing. At times, OS updates, patches, and driver updates may cause issues with cards that were previously working fine.

We recommend you use the latest system and GPU hardware to make the most of GPU features in Photoshop.

The list of graphics processor cards above is updated as newly released cards are tested. However, Adobe cannot test all cards in a timely manner. If your cards is not listed above, but meets the following requirements, you can assume that it works with the latest version of Photoshop CC:

AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.1.1 released, optimized for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

AMD has released a brand new driver for its graphics cards. According to the release notes, the AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.1.1 driver offers optimal performance in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

This driver also comes with multiple bug fixes. For instance, it fixes a game crash and DXGI dialogue error when running Mechwarrior 5 using HDMI and Radeon FreeSync display configurations. It also resolves some stuttering issues during gameplay in Lost Ark. Furthermore, it fixes screen flashing when launching Resident Evil 2 Remake using DirectX 12 API.

The audible beeps at game startup from Radeon Chill, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Anti-Lag have been removed. These features now offer audible indicators only when activated or deactivated via hotkey.

The Radeon ReLive on screen timer indicator during recordings has been disabled by default but can be enabled in Radeon Software settings.

Controls for vertical sync may be hidden or disappear when Radeon Enhanced Sync is enabled.

Radeon ReLive may experience freezing or pausing issues during recordings when a high resolution camera is connected and in use.

CPU usage may sometimes remain high once Radeon Game Advisor has been invoked during a game.

Some users may experience an error message “Another instance is running” during download of a software update through the Radeon Software home screen.

The DuplicateDesktop process may sometimes cause high CPU usage while a game is running.

Radeon Software may close or may experience a crash upon resuming from sleep.

The toast message detailing the hotkey to open Radeon Software’s Overlay may still show up in some games after Radeon Software Overlay has been disabled.

AMD RADEON RX 5500 XT 8GB REVIEW

AMD's retail Radeon RX 5500 XT series of graphics cards are here, bringing additional options to the budget and mid-range graphics card market. I looked at the Radeon RX 5500 XT 4GB last week for the launch, and now it's time for a review of the 8GB card. Just how much does doubling down on VRAM do for performance? As you'd expect, it depends on the games and settings you're running.

If you haven't read the 4GB model review, I suggest you start there. AMD's Navi / RDNA architecture hasn't changed, though Navi 14 does cut the potential number of compute units (CUs) from a maximum of 40 down to a maximum of 24—with the 5500 XT enabling 22 of the CUs. The two cards I'm reviewing look identical, which is expected as both are Sapphire Pulse models. The only difference is the VRAM and a $30 increase in price.

While the specs might not have changed, other than VRAM, the price increase has some ramifications. The 5500 XT 4GB card matches up against the GTX 1650 Super, and the two are effectively tied in performance. The 8GB card meanwhile has to take on the GTX 1660, and Nvidia's card has the same number of GPU cores, 1,408. The problem for AMD is that Nvidia's GPU cores tend to perform a bit better overall, so the GTX 1660 is likely to come out ahead in performance. At least the TDP is basically the same—120W vs 130W won't really matter either way.

There's little difference in features to speak of. Technically, Nvidia's GTX 1660 can enable ray tracing in games that support it. In practice, the 1660 isn't fast enough to make ray tracing worthwhile. There are other facets of performance—AMD GPUs often perform better in DirectX 12 games, Nvidia GPUs can do better in DX11 and other games—but overall the two sides are evenly matched in the mid-range and lower markets.

There's also a jump in generational pricing, especially looking at current street prices. The RX 590 originally launched at $279 last year; today, you can get that same card for $179. It uses more power, but performance is going to be very similar to the RX 5500 XT 8GB. Even AMD's own numbers say as much, where AMD compares the 5500 XT to the older RX 480 cards and claims a 30 percent improvement in performance. AMD's not wrong, but the RX 470/480 are three years old, so a 30 percent improvement at only slightly lower prices isn't all that impressive.

Which brings me to the real question: How does the RX 5500 XT 8GB perform? Let's get to the benchmarks.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB gaming performance

My standard testbed features an overclocked Core i7-8700K running at 5.0GHz. For budget and midrange cards, the CPU might be overkill, but it shows the highest potential performance for the graphics cards. Anyone considering the RX 5500 XT will probably be running a slightly slower CPU, but anything from the past several years should be sufficient. I've tested 11 games for this review, with a reasonable split between games that favor AMD hardware, and games that run better on Nvidia hardware.

Testing is done at 1080p 'medium' and 'ultra' settings (which may go by different names, depending on the game), as well as 1440p and 'ultra' settings. Each game is tested multiple times, using the median result, to ensure consistency of performance. I've included a few more GPUs this time, mostly for reference—if you're thinking about upgrading from a Vega 56, for example, the 5500 XT isn't going to be very compelling. It looks better against the old GTX 970 and R9 390, however.

At 1080p medium, there's no real benefit to the 8GB RX 5500 XT compared to the 4GB model. A few games even perform slightly faster with the 4GB card, which is a bit odd—it's probably just slight differences in memory latency. The RX 5500 XT cards are also tied with the GTX 1650 Super in overall performance, but the GTX 1660 is about 5 percent faster. Running medium quality at 1080p isn't really the goal if you're going to pay extra for the 8GB card, however.

Stepping up to 1080p ultra starts to favor the 8GB model over its lesser sibling, though it's only a seven percent improvement on average. Individual games show much larger gains, though—Shadow of the Tomb Raider performance improves by 9 percent, Forza Horizon 4 runs 15 percent faster, Borderlands 3 is 18 percent faster, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey opens up a 33 percent gap. The remaining seven games all show relatively similar performance, but there have been quite a few recent games that I'm not showing here where having more VRAM would also be beneficial (eg, Red Dead Redemption 2).

The difficulty AMD faces is that at 1080p—which is really the resolution you should plan on using with a mid-range or budget GPU—even at maxed out quality there aren't a ton of games that truly need more VRAM. And of the games that benefit from more VRAM, none of them seem to need more than 6GB. That means once again that the GTX 1660 costs as much as the 5500 XT 8GB but performs about five percent better.

At 1440p ultra, the 5500 XT 8GB shows its largest lead yet relative to the 4GB cards. It's now 12 percent faster, but we're also looking at average performance across the test suite of 45 fps. Every game still stays above 30 fps, which means performance is still generally better than current consoles, but only two of the tested games (Strange Brigade and Forza Horizon 4) average 60 fps or more. Lighter esports games like CS:GO and Overwatch should be viable at 1440p, however.

I'm not showing 4K charts, because framerates are about half what you get at 1440p, but if you're wondering: the 8GB card ends up with a 25 percent average performance lead over the 4GB model. It also comes out tied with the 1660 at 4K ultra, though both sit at 25 fps. Long-term, the 6GB and 8GB cards are a safer choice than a 4GB card, and I wouldn't touch a 2GB model at this point, but if you want more performance, you'll still be better off getting a faster GPU rather than doubling VRAM.

AMD Radeon XT 5500 XT 8GB: more and less

As a general rule, I advise people not to skimp on VRAM. I've been saying that since the GTX 1060 3GB/6GB and RX 570/580 4GB/8GB launches several years back. Yes, it costs more for the higher VRAM models, and performance doesn't always improve a lot with the extra memory. Except when it does, and then you could end up very sad that you cheaped out on your graphics card and now have to turn down some settings. The RX 5500 XT 8GB is a continuation of that recommendation. You can save $30 by purchasing the 4GB model, but long-term I don't think that's the best plan.

That's the "more" part of the equation, but it's not a clear win and there's a reason I've scored this card slightly lower than the 4GB model. First, even across 11 games, the improvement in performance at 1080p ultra is mostly minor (with a few exceptions). In an AMD-only world, I still recommend buying the 8GB model, but AMD isn't alone, there are multiple other options. Nvidia's GTX 1660 costs the same as the 5500 XT 8GB, or you can spend another $30 to get a GTX 1660 Super.

Alternatively, look at more than just the price of the graphics card and its performance. Spending 15 percent more ($230) for a 20 percent increase in framerates (ie, GTX 1660 Super) is reasonable. However, if you're putting that card into a gaming PC that costs $500 for the other components, it's really $730 vs. $700—a mere 4 percent increase in total cost, for the same 20 percent improvement in performance. That's basically what the GTX 1660 Super offers. Or you could upgrade to an RTX 2060 and it would be $800 vs $700, a 14 percent increase in PC costs for a 45 percent jump in performance. Spending a bit more money for each higher tier of graphics performance is a slippery slope, but even if you stop at the $200 mark, the RX 5500 XT 8GB doesn't come out as the champion.

Ultimately, AMD's Radeon RX 5500 XT series is a reasonable offering in the budget to midrange graphics card market. It's not clearly superior to other options, but it's also not clearly worse. If you're looking to buy a new graphics card, whether as an upgrade to an existing PC or as part of a new gaming PC build, it's worth a look. Performance of the 5500 XT 8GB is basically equal to the outgoing RX 590, while using about 100W less power. You wouldn't want to "upgrade" from a 590 to a 5500 XT, in other words, but if you're trying to choose between those two AMD options, I'd grab the newer model. If you're not set on AMD, however, I'd look to the GTX 1660 or 1660 Super.
